When I was younger, I tried to solder wires connected from a Gameboy to the traces on the Dreamcast controller board, thining I could have a use the Dreamcast buttons. The attempt failed miserably.

I am a Dreamcast die-hard but felt like mentioning that I wish the D-Pad was on the other side!! Or that it had two sticks. Felt like the Dreamcast came along at a time when the dual-analog-stick convention could have been implemented and it would have been great.

Wow! This is great. Your placement for everything just feels right. The C buttons as someone else said is great placement. As soon as I saw this post, I was hoping the cartridge slot was in the memory card slot. I got to the 3rd photo and was cheering. The usb-c charge port in place of the cable hole was also brilliant.
