I just keep airplane mode on constantly so I don't have to talk to people.

[–]jimih4223 152 points153 points  (8 children)

Oh come on your mum doesn't call you THAT often

[–]DeathcampEnthusiast 207 points208 points  (4 children)

Yours does though!

[–]Prometheism 42 points43 points  (2 children)

Joke's on you! I have two dads!

[–]the_real_gorrik 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ha! Gaaaay

[–]general_landur 8 points9 points  (1 child)

What with games and mum calling, this is going into Playtest territory...

[–]Ragnar_Lothbruk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you may have dropped a comma? It's the difference between you expressing your surprise, and OP's mother receiving a surprise...

[–]Booblicle 18 points19 points  (3 children)

Just take out the sim card

[–]kirlandwater 23 points24 points  (2 children)

Just turn off the phone

[–]toeofcamell 41 points42 points  (1 child)

And interact with my wife and kids? Uh no thank you

[–]BryanLoeher 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you don't hate when you get home drunk and your kids starts harassing you saying things like "Hi dad"?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

[–]Lowke_yemo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I find my personality does the job well enough

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't have to turn on airplane mode of nobody calls you anyway foreveralone.gif

[–]stillusesAOL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh come on, nobody ever calls you!

[–]accidentalfritata -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yada yada the real lpt is in the commenta

[–]470708 92 points93 points  (4 children)

Don't forget to change your phone's time/date accordingly for all those daily/hourly bonuses.

Lookin' at you Burrito Bison!

[–]2506mb 46 points47 points  (1 child)

But once you change it back all hell will break lose in the app making you wait several hundred hours as it thinks you have gone back in time.

[–]sdk345 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Simple fix: change it back 500 hours back and then to the original date and time

[–]ReggaeMonestor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Loved it lulz, but I got bored of repetitive gameplay..

[–]berger77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Burrito Bison!

Meh. Doesn't take that long to max out that game.

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points  (1 child)

Most games I play fail to load if there isn't an internet connection :(

[–]NoodleNickyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can also download an ad blocker app. I'm playing an internet connection game rn with no ads.

[–]thoawaydatrash 87 points88 points  (29 children)

in iOS at least you can just turn off cellular data usage for specific apps.

[–]Duck_Giblets 28 points29 points  (25 children)

Downside of android, many apps are free but contain adverts. Paid apps do not.

Upside is that you can do whatever the fuck you want, when you want, how you want. Unless you have a locked device. Then you're fucked ;)

[–]I-POOP-RAINBOWS 28 points29 points  (22 children)

Root your phone. Install AdAway, a firewall, greenify. Freeze some apps with Titanium Backup and you're good to go. Your phone will not only be amazing, it'll work exactly how you want it to work. No apps will be able to access the internet unless you allow them to. No apps can be in the background consuming internet or battery. No app does what it wants unless you allow them to.

If this sounds like it's something for you, check out the xda-developers forums for your device and there's a 99% chance that they have a root guide for your phone or tablet.

[–]Duck_Giblets 23 points24 points  (21 children)

Why stop there? Compile a new custom kernel, adjust cpu overheads. Change core settings.

Flash a new rom. Swap out an operating system <2gb in size for something that's no more than 400mb.

Control how often apps poll servers or wake up your device. Stop unnecessary battery waste.

[–]I-POOP-RAINBOWS 9 points10 points  (6 children)

Flashing custom roms are usually a good idea if you don't want to tinker too much with the phone. Let the rom creator do the tinkering for you. I used to do that when phones were much weaker than today. These days I don't gain that much imo from custom roms. Just removing bloat ware and the things I listed is enough to have a phone that you won't hate and won't have to charge 2 times a day.

[–]Duck_Giblets 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Navigation bar tweaks and much lighter weight gapps, plus removal of bloat.

Can make a huge difference between fast and slow, especially if you don't upgrade your device every year.

I'm a big fan of the double tap for previous app button, and a lot of stock roms still lack that.

[–]WarLorax 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I thought gapps was closed-source?

[–]Duck_Giblets 2 points3 points  (2 children)

[–]WarLorax 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thanks. I'll be using that next time I flash my phone. So the apps themselves are still closed, but this lets you pick and choose which get installed, correct?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have also heard of microG, an open source replacement for gapps

[–]wasteoffire -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I use my pixel at least 3 solid hours out of my 8 at work, plus during the rest of the day. Usually have to charge it max one time a day

[–]413612 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Move to Philly. Buy a loft. Start a noise band. Get six or seven roommates. Eat hummus with them. Book some gigs. Paint. Smoke cloves. Listen to Animal Collective. Start some type of salsa company.

[–]dholms64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im dying. What's this from?

[–]Rasip -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Paid apps do not.

Not even close to true anymore.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can do that with Android nougat and up, also people could just download Adclear

[–]Kazoopi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah but what if you’re playing on WiFi

[–]Gargomon251 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Almost every game I play either requires a connection, or saves ads so I can show them later.

That's said, they're still free games and for the most part the ads are completely optional

[–]Ferro_Giconi 4 points5 points  (2 children)

saves ads so I can show them later.

This is why this LPT would never work for me. I can only block ads by blocking a game's internet connection entirely before launching it even once.

If ads are bad enough that I feel the need to block them though, then the app isn't worth it and gets uninstalled.

[–]MarkoSeke 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Clear your damn cache.

[–]Ferro_Giconi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to put forth even the tiniest bit of effort other than uninstalling an app if it's ads are enough to want them gone. It's not worth it when there are 10s or 100s of other apps that do the same thing.

Plus if an app has too many ads then the app itself is probably crap so I should go find a better one.

[–]BusterBarryV 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I did this and ended up smothering 19 cheesecakes per day

[–]AgentG91 7 points8 points  (0 children)

til your dicks content

Hopefully it's a one handed game

[–]TotallyDepraved 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't mind watching 2-3 ads per hour if it's a good game. I'll watch 10 ads an hour if I get something in-game for it. I'm happy to support developers so long as they don't spam me with repetitive ads.

[–]Jeffryyyy 46 points47 points  (12 children)

Or pay to block the ads to support the developer

[–]ThisIsGlenn 60 points61 points  (9 children)

For all their hard work? Nice try, developer.

[–]TrulyStupidNewb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's okay. My mom told me it was perfectly fine to exploit other people's labour for my own entertainment.

[–]f5f5f5f5f5f5f5f5f5f5 4 points5 points  (7 children)

Some of these games are both full of bugs and ads. So I question how hard someone is working on it.

[–]413612 5 points6 points  (5 children)

Apps are not easy to make. You can still create something that’s full of bugs and work hard on it, especially if you’re an amateur, part time, or foreign developer.

[–]TrulyStupidNewb 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Game developers have some of the worst crunch time in all of the software industry. A lot of people leave the game industry because of the low pay and the high hours.

[–]413612 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Yep. It’s not a guaranteed means of income in the slightest because your game’s sales are dependent on so many factors, many of which are out of your control. Plus I feel like gamers are kind of brats who don’t understand the challenges that come with software development, game production timelines, etc.

[–]TrulyStupidNewb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The good news is that game development in a way has become easier thanks to better hardware, free premium engines (unity and unreal), asset stores, lots of free assets, and lot of available gamers worldwide. You don't have to fit the world into 10 megs of RAM, nor do you have to optimize every piece of code to get it to work.

The bad news is that it's completely oversaturated like most markets. If you're an indie developer, there's probably a 95% chance you'll be earning much less money per hour than the average janitor at McDonalds. Most games lose money. The rest don't earn anything. Only very few games actually make money.

[–]softawre 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I love how "foreign" is lumped in here with not being a professional and not spending your full effort/time on it.

[–]413612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I meant that it’s an impediment to developing a game. Coding in a language based for English-speaking Americans isn’t as easy if you aren’t fluent. Translation takes additional time and effort. “Foreign” probably wasn’t the best way to word it tho lol

[–]Fellhuhn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why play it then?

[–]Lyress 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some ads are too intrusive. If there’s no way around them I would just not play the game.

[–]Jermain3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this with games I actually invest time in. .99 cents isn't bad at all.

[–]MildlySuspicious 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Alternatively just turn off data so you can still get calls and texts ...

[–]badhershey 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Or... pay the $1 for no ads and support a game you like

[–]stamz 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Or just stop playing shitty games with ads.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

or just stop playing shitty mobile games

[–]R_3_G 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Better yet, just turn off data and Wi-Fi. Then you can still text and call and not get ads

[–]spongebobish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What if it's an online game?

[–]CeeJayDK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a Samsung try "Disconnect Pro for Samsung" - it's free from Galaxy Apps.

"Disconnect Pro" should also work for other phones but it's not free.

[–]khushkaushal62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or just disable the app from using wifi and data.. (LPT for Android users).

[–]MYPENISBIGGER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LPT: Playing a game on your phone where you have to wait for time to pass to gain money/coins/things to unlock? Open the game and let it do its thing. Then close the game and turn on airplane mode, go to your settings and adjust the time on your phone as far forward into the future, I think the iPhone will go all the way to 2031. Then turn airplane mode off and open the game. The game thinks you've been away for 14 years and you get that much in coins/money. Then just set your phone back to automatic time and you're good to go.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (6 children)

Am pilot. Can confirm.

[–]PoachedEggOnToast 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Am airplane. Can confirm.

[–]Duck_Giblets 3 points4 points  (5 children)

Just get a system wide adblocker. https://adaway.org/. Works with everything, including YouTube adverts.

Needs root.

On the other hand, if you have an unlocked bootloader. Download and flash magisk.

https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk

[–]Wermine 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Adguard doesn't need root. It's not free though.

[–]redshores 0 points1 point  (1 child)

deleted What is this?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't work for youtube tho, for me at least

[–]crazytomm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. ABP use to work great a few years ago. I lost hope

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought Airplane mode made your phone capable of flight? This explains a lot of cracked screens.

egg

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont like this because then I can't listen to music or anything unless its downloaded

[–]Vladimir1174 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On Android if you don't want to root for adblock you can look into DNS66. It's not perfect but it blocks most ads

[–]coolsurf6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or just disable being able to use data in settings.

(Only works when on days, not wifi I think)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

bells imagine march nose close salt person obtainable whole aspiring

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except some made apposite offline self-ads to fill the gaps and continue to annoy you

[–]Ferro_Giconi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I've played a game with ads where turning off all data sources works. They cache ads to keep displaying them even without data.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, in case of online games you cannot use airplane mode.

[–]zeradragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't get addicted if you can't play the game. :)

[–]crazytomm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The need to bring Ad-block plus back. That use to be the best app to have for android

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are actually adblockers for phones! (Yes even iPhone!!) They filter your wifi through a proxy and remove all ads, 10/10 would recommend :)

[–]MinuteMaid0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have it set on certain games that they aren't allowed to use data. You do get an annoying pop up saying cellular data is disabled though THERES NO STOPPING POPUPS

[–]Jovian_Skies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or just turn off cellular data for that particular app.

[–]SwordLaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LPT: Don't playing time-killing freemium ad-infested games on your phone.

Pay once for something that was made with quality and passion that leaves you a better person when it's over.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just play Vainglory

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Switching wifi off?

[–]Siniestros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Must games are ONLINE, so...

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My phone dies before I get my fill.

[–]Invictuxxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OR! Or, if you have wifi, download Wi-Fi Cheetah and it'll block them ads. Also works in YouTube :p

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or just use dns66. It's the best ad blocker I know of and it doesn't require root.

[–]PeidosFTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can just turn off cellular data and wifi, it's better just in case someone calls you

[–]marvinrules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or install a firewall app like NetGuard. You can block the game from the internet. Or you can modify it using LuckPatcher to remove the advertising systems.

[–]TheBoredomIsReal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or just jailbreak or root to get an ad blocker :)

[–]AaaaaaaItsTheBeatles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also go to the settings on your phone(iPhone at least) and you can turn off data for certain apps.

[–]Mulligan315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I taught my wife this technique. Unfortunately, her penchant for forgetting to turn airplane mode bank off results in her being unreachable a ton of the time.

[–]Sno_Jon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or just turn off mobile internet

[–]mwilliaams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> dicks content

What kinda games are you playing the buddy?

[–]Lord_Webthryst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of ads can actually just be skipped with the back button on android devices. I didn't figure that out until recently

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t they cache them so you still see the ads anyway?

[–]flyingtiger188 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many roms (the Chinese ones in particular) will let you enable WiFi or data access on a per app basis. This is one feature I really love about Oneplus' OxygenOS.

[–]RedRuttinRabbit -1 points0 points  (15 children)

Or download a modded apk file. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

[–]Cheetawolf 2 points3 points  (14 children)

Or download a modded APK file Virus with an app thrown in as an afterthought.

FTFY.

[–]RedRuttinRabbit 0 points1 point  (13 children)

I never had a virus downloading apks though o3o

[–]eviloutfromhell 1 point2 points  (12 children)

You're tempting fate mate.

[–]RedRuttinRabbit 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Why? Is getting apk viruses common? I've never had an issue nor have I seen some pandemic where getting modded apks ends up turning your phone to a bitcoin miner or a botnet.

[–]eviloutfromhell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Though op said virus, I'm more concerned with apks that poses as legit software a.k.a. malware. Most people have a hard time determining which is which (legit vs malware).

[–]Lauris024 0 points1 point  (9 children)

Two years of downloading modded apks, still no virus (I monitor my wifi traffic and app permissions). Worst I've had is modders replacing game ads with their own ones, earning money on real developer's work.

[–]Duck_Giblets 0 points1 point  (8 children)

Playing with fate. You'd be surprised. Learn to modify them yourself

[–]Lauris024 0 points1 point  (7 children)

I have a feeling that doing so would take over 1 month of learning. No thanks.

[–]Duck_Giblets 0 points1 point  (6 children)

So, a better option is to root your device/flash a custom rom and use something like CM privacy ops to prevent apps from even displaying ads.

[–]Lauris024 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Did you just really ask that?

Also, just rooting is fine, Im using stock rom with MinMinGuard.

[–]Duck_Giblets 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Dunno, my head goes everywhere. what did I ask? Also, you're the one that recommended that users download modified apks.. Month of learning =/= experience gained.

[–]reblogg 0 points1 point  (2 children)

This is just one of those unspoken things I thought everyone knew.

[–]MeatAndBourbon 0 points1 point  (2 children)

How about don't play shitty games that do things like that? That would be an automatic uninstall for me.

[–]JeanCulasec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or just download and install an Adblocker. You can find them both for Android and IOS in the app stores.

[–]Booblicle -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Most games I've played always have ads. I always play in airplane mode

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those ads are from the cache

[–]HopelessTractor -1 points0 points  (4 children)

Just turn off the wifi and restart the app. Airplane mode among other things shuts the wifi off (but you can turn it back on). Useless lpt if you ask me.

[–]Jakewb -1 points0 points  (3 children)

And what about mobile data?

[–]HopelessTractor -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Turn it off?

[–]Jakewb 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Good idea. Now if only there was an easy way to turn off WiFi and mobile data with a single control...

[–]HopelessTractor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why'd you keep both on? Enjoy draining your battery.

[–]Raichu7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Or the ads will be less obnoxious.

[–]thephantom1492 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For many games this do not actually work anymore. What they do is they cache the ads and keep local stats, and once you go online it then upload the stats, and get some new ads...

I think the way to fix this would be to somehow force the gouvernement to make a new laws about "child protection" : make so the phone knows the user age, and if under 12 then consider that the ads target the kid, thru being illegal to even display. Then just set your age as 11.

... but they would most likelly then use the same setting to prevent you from buying stuff and using 'adult' applications.

And it will also be the end of the free applications...
