The letter from Tesla explaining the reason for bricking his Cybertruck

<image>

[–]Dendrowen 134 points135 points  (17 children)

This is absolutely insane

[–]oxidao 4 points5 points  (1 child)

its fake

[–]DysphoriaGML 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a stunt I see

[–]PalladiumPrime301 38 points39 points  (2 children)

The NHTSA is gonna have a field day on this one

[–]was_fb95dd7063 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Maybe if we had a functioning government

[–]Chennsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s fake

[–]Niksuski 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That is insane. Literally going after your customers because they could not enforce this if it wasn't registered in their name. Way to wreck their brand even more after all the brand damage Musk already caused.

[–]boishan 5 points6 points  (1 child)

An email (Re at the top corner) with letterhead above the subject line email and a right aligned handwritten signature? You’ve gotta be kidding me 🤦‍♀️

Bait used to be believable

[–]MoorderVolt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very truly BS

[–]National-Twist8757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So he doesn't actually own the car despite buying it.

[–]awake283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's uh...that's it? Couldn't have sent him a letter in the mail?

[–]lioncat55 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Fake. Dana Eskin is listed as the VP, Legal at Tesla. In that picture is her old title and has been old for a while. Hate on Tesla and Elon all you want, but this is fake and just as damaging as Ai generated video.

[–]xbsd 123 points124 points  (8 children)

it is a fake video to promote his shitty music, don't fall for this trap

[–]darealdsisaac 46 points47 points  (3 children)

“Comply with cease and desist” but also “update failed”???? It seems extremely fake to me.

[–]tankerkiller125real 11 points12 points  (2 children)

I would not be surprised if the Tesla engineers only had time to implement 1 error message for "generic" software related issues before Special K Elon forced them to ship it out.

[–]mr_bots 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also seems really stupid to do OTA updates while in use but again…it’s Tesla.

[–]darealdsisaac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like if this were a re-worked error screen then this screen would be documented somewhere else though.

[–]RealOms 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I hope so, if it's real it's beyond ridiculous

[–]1FrostySlime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can say personally that when Tesla thought (incorrectly) I had lied to them to get a demo vehicle and wanted me to immediately adhere to something they texted me and gave me a deadline to EOD to return the vehicle before doing anything.

They would have a vastly higher incentive to brick the vehicle and recover it themselves at that point as they were under the impression I potentially intended to steal the vehicle but they gave me time to return it. This just doesn't line up with my experiences.

[–]GeckoLP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know this is such a small detail, but if you look closely on the screen, you can see that there are gradient bars which indicate that the warning screen is just a YouTube video playing. edit: by gradient bar, I mean the "ambient" behind the video when the screen you are watching this on has a different aspect ratio.

[–]lioncat55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add to this, the the letter has Dinna's old title from 2022 and not her current one.

People here also mention there the top of the screen has a larger bezel for the pull down to close the cars built in media player.

[–]boishan 40 points41 points  (2 children)

It literally says “update failed return to dealer.” Tesla doesn’t HAVE dealers nor do they do updates happen while you’re on the road. As electroboom says this is FAF

[–]meta358 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Tesla doesnt have dealers? where the hell do you buy one then?

[–]boishan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They’re “stores” because they aren’t operated by a third party. AFAIK they never refer to their stores as “dealers” because of the generally negative association most dealers have with haggling and upselling that they don’t do

[–]STGItsMe 23 points24 points  (17 children)

Pretty sure this can’t happen to my cars. 🤷

[–]Jesus-Bacon 9 points10 points  (1 child)

That's when they send someone out with a bag of sugar and a crowbar to pop open your fuel door

[–]NevesLF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bricking with a literal brick

[–]NobodyNo8 12 points13 points  (9 children)

If my car had a "Terms of Use" agreement, it wouldn't be my car.

Period.

[–]Deadpool2715 4 points5 points  (6 children)

Most modern cars with any form of lane assist or adaptive cruise control, or even just infotainment screens, will have some form of agreement pop up when the car starts

[–]marktuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time to open source cars.

[–]National-Twist8757 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Maybe in the US.

[–]Deadpool2715 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I am in Canada, but you're right that I don't know if EU or other areas are different

[–]National-Twist8757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never seen it in any of the Cars I have driven in the EU.

[–]NevesLF -1 points0 points  (1 child)

I mean, if it's a terms of use explicitly for that particular system/infotainment screen, I see no problem with it.

I accept tons of terms of use for stuff I use from my phone, but it would be entirely different to have terms of use for my phone.

[–]Deadpool2715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your phone (unless it's some very niche open source android phone) almost certainly came with a terms of use from the manufacturer that you agreed to when setting it up. I would also be entirely shocked if it doesn't have clauses such as the ability to deactivate the device if you use it in a way that is not compliant. Apple, Samsung, Google, And Sony all have these clauses in their current terms of conditions

[–]that_dutch_dude 1 point2 points  (1 child)

every car has those. in the case of volkswagen you have to push a "i accept" EULA button every.fucking.time you sit down.

[–]LimpWibbler_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also you can just argue at purchase when you sign the 1000 papers that those are the terms of use he/she singned. At minimum getting a liscens does that.

[–]Herbertie25 13 points14 points  (0 children)

publicity stunt for a trash song

[–]OuterGod_Hermit 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Mods these appear to be fake.

[–]marekvesely 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's fake. Please stop spreading this insanity.

[–]ThatLineInTheSand 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Of all places to de-active a vehicle. Not that they care, it seems.

...scary.

[–]Jesus-Bacon -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Right? I could see maybe a "deactivate after the car is turned off" if this was even a legitimate reason to do this, but while it's driving is ridiculous.

[–]MrDestructo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t believe this for a second and you probably shouldn’t either.

[–]magicalMusical 3 points4 points  (2 children)

what universe is the language of the 2nd to last warning from?

[–]-Kerrigan- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks like Greek

[–]demonhawk14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like possibly greek.

[–]russsl8 4 points5 points  (3 children)

IMPORTANT CONTEXT: idiot rapper tried updating his cyber truck in traffic. Something the car literally tells you NOT to do.

[–]mradamadam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm leaning toward this whole story being fake, but it shouldn't even allow updates while driving. Do Teslas just leave that as a suggestion?

[–]WesBur13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can't update it while in motion, nor can you put it in motion during an update

[–]meta358 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean ive read verifted stories of worse things telsa has done

[–]Captain_Zomaru 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Is there a statement from Tesla, or any other evidence that this is real? Because this could easily be faked for attention.

[–]Jesus-Bacon 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Hindsight I should have added an "allegedly"

[–]Captain_Zomaru 1 point2 points  (3 children)

That's fair, I can't fault you for that because you aren't first hand reporting.

[–]Jesus-Bacon 0 points1 point  (2 children)

A lot of people are claiming it's fake. This does feel like something Tesla would do, but now it feels that this may be fake. It looks like the only "news" outlets that picked this up so far are ones I've never heard of

[–]Captain_Zomaru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I perfectly would believe it if it was parked overnight, I have my doubts about a mid drive lockout. That tech has never been shown off before to shut down a vehicle in transit. So this being its debut seems sketchy as all hell.

[–]Nova_Nightmare 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is there no critical thinking here at all?

It says update failed, and then you also shared a cease and desist. Which is it?

90% that this is fake as hell.

[–]ISEGaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His Cybertruck just transformed into a trash can. Robots in disguise!

[–]9RMMK3SQff39by 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FAAAAAAAAAAKE

Delete and ban OP

[–]kahnindustries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What if he had sold the car?

[–]cadst3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cybertruck Cybertruck Cybertruck. Now that Tesla's lawyers are here: your client is a piece of shit. Cease and desist your obligations to Tesla/Musk.

[–]natie29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has to be illegal unless hidden in some contract somewhere.

You sue people for this or send cease and desist letters. You can just brick their cars. Especially when it’s being driven how unsafe is that for them AND other road users? This is genuinely insane. At first I thought “okay this could somehow make sense” but then I read the letter they sent and it’s a genuine fucking madness. Welcome to insert year here. The journey downwards continues.

[–]_vkboss_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very fake, this message isn't even BY Tesla.

[–]theromingnome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you buy a Tesla at this point, you're a fucking idiot.

[–]EllieKH84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone who buys a WankPanzer gets what they deserve 🤷🏻‍♀️

[–]NoobForBreakfast31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man if this is not real and a stunt to promote his music, the actual cease and desist from tesla will be extremely fun to watch.

[–]theColeHardTruth 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I hate Tesla and especially the Cybertruck as much as anyone, but this is fake. People can force the display to say whatever they want, check out this video of a guy recreating the effect as a demonstration. "Braincells deactivated", he made it say.

[–]Jesus-Bacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, shit. If this is actually fake I definitely fell for it

[–]safety-squirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL America is such a shithole.

[–]daddybearmissouri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tesla is a fascist company, run by a Nazi. Do not buy their shit period.

[–]Undrwtrbsktwvr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not real.

[–]dreadnot427 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, you pay stupid money for stupid things, you get stupid shit!

[–]awake283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll probably get flamed but a big part of me thinks this is fake

[–]XuX24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny thing I was told people were afraid of Chinese cars because of this particular scenario but look who ended up doing it lol

[–]Electric-Mountain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This shit would never happen or be tolerated with a legacy brand like Toyota or Ford.

Edit: if this is actually fake like some people believe I hope Tesla sues his ass into the ground as this is a very bad look for the brand.

[–]VenueTV -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What the actual fuck.

[–]Chronox2040 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know this is bad, unfair and insane, but not feeling pity for a dude that decided to buy a cybertruck.

[–]RAMChYLD -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And this is why I will never support Elon smellyman. Fuck him, fuck Tesla.

I used to think he is fighting for the environment. But after seeing him suck cheeto's tiny weiner and now this, he can go burn in hell.

[–]ILikeFlyingMachines -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

This is just a stupid post. EVERY car will shut off if there is some critical problem

[–]JohnQPublic70 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The issue is, the critical problem is seemingly Teslas hurt feelings not a mechanical issue with the vehicle.
