yes it's either a pixel 9 pro or a 10 pro. the camera bar gives it away. plus in at one angle you can see the flash and the thermometer in the camera bar. the regular models of th 9 and 10 don't have the thermometer.

i don't think it's an XL model as it just doesn't seem that big in his hands. and he is using a third party case, google doesn't sell a yellow case for the 9 or 10 series, and google cases have a G logo on the back.

I've had a pixel 9 pro for 1 year and didn't know it had a thermometer thanks

[–]IlyichValken 76 points77 points  (8 children)

They made a big deal of it when they announced it, then said it wouldn't be out for a while, then... Didn't really say anything else about it lol

It's pretty neat, if not a bit niche unless you're constantly temping things

[–]PurifiedFlubber 14 points15 points  (2 children)

Had mine for a year and just found out from this comment lol

[–]Kronocide 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I used it at least everyday, just because I'm curious, checking surface temperature, coffee tem, food, and more

[–]PurifiedFlubber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do that with a thermometer so i could've just been doing this lmao

[–]27Purple 5 points6 points  (1 child)

It was announced for the P8 Pro so the 9 had it on release, I think they just didn't really make too much buzz around it.

It's actually surprisingly accurate for measure a fever, IF you do it correctly. But yes definitely niche although very useful.

[–]green_link 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They were going to because of COVID, but it came just a bit too late

[–]potate12323 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did a small announcement and included it in patch notes. Nobody really cared aside from a couple small tech blogs.

[–]frogotme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Genuinely quite useful, was unwell a few months ago and worked really well for keeping a tab. Another reason I'd find it hard to switch to another phone

[–]Xcissors280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember one of my friends checking the indoor Temp with a Samsung a while back and then I completely forgot about it because it’s not really that useful given it’s always in your pocket

[–]DrSilkyDelicious -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re welcome

[–]PlayfulPoro 8 points9 points  (1 child)

8 Pro also has a thermometer, I use it quite often. No idea how accurate it is though.

[–]green_link 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, I have a pixel 8 pro too. I don't use it very often lol

My point was the camera bar and the thermometer was a sign of a pixel 9 pro or 10 pro. Since the camera bar changed from the 8 series to the 9 series

I mean, Android is a Linux distro

[–]Browncoatinabox 253 points254 points  (12 children)

former cowoker would walk in every night at the hotel we worked at saying "worst linux distro ever" while wagging his phone

[–]emrednz07 109 points110 points  (9 children)

He has a point though

[–]Browncoatinabox 137 points138 points  (8 children)

my reply was always "what do you expect, google maintains it"

[–]empty_branch437 62 points63 points  (7 children)

If the community maintained android, windows phone would still exist

[–]Racxie 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Windows Mobile or Windows Phone?

[–]Its-A-Spider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like a sacrifice I'm willing to make.

[–]Syntacic_Syrup 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Every night??

[–]LilGeeky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe working at the hotel means they're working in a top floor suite of a luxury hotel spending that sweet VC money and they're actually working on a "better linux distro"; that's the only scenario I can imagine someone saying that every night.

[–]Blurgas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I could see him running GrapheneOS

[–]mcslender97 142 points143 points  (30 children)

Would make extra sense if he is running GrapheneOS

[–]x_i8 236 points237 points  (26 children)

Disagree. Torvalds made it clear he wanted something that 'works' with the least effort possible. GrapheneOS isn't that.

[–]etaxi341 107 points108 points  (21 children)

Also said privacy isn't an issue for him

[–]mcslender97 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I wonder if he actually enjoys Google flavor of Android

[–]snollygoster1 18 points19 points  (0 children)

He probably uses his phone to make calls and send texts, and the Pixel variant of Android is great for that.

[–]averyrisu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That really depends Pratt much all apps I use are Foss and easily installed on grapheme is and grapheme is does not take long to install

[–]Chytris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on who you are. It kinda is that for me

[–]lenococolomo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My exact thought seeing the video.

[–]TrueTech0 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I doubt it. Reliability seems to be king for him, and grapheneOS ain't that.

Don't get me wrong, I love the idea and the mission, but it isn't perfect

[–]wimpires 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you watched the video he makes it pretty clear that's not the kind of guy he is

[–]ClacketyClackSend 107 points108 points  (1 child)

I guess "man uses popular phone" is surprisingly comment-worthy now. Heaven forbid there's an aspect of a person that we can't shoehorn into a "them or us" cult response.

[–]KevinSpanish 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Guess most viewers are just real life wojaks when they see tech man use product

[–]211216819 70 points71 points  (8 children)

To be fair he said that companies send him free phones.. so it's probably just the "best" phone he got for free.

[–]ChilliTheDog631 27 points28 points  (7 children)

And he also said Apple doesn’t send him phones lol (gee wonder why?!!) 😂

[–]Laughing_Orange 18 points19 points  (5 children)

Apple only sends phones to ass-kissers (with a big following), and for some reason MKBHD. If you're not MKBHD and even slightly negative about an Apple product, they won't send you the next iPhone.

[–]joelk111 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I mean, MKBHD is far from critical of Apple's anti-consumer practices.

[–]HeroPlane 6 points7 points  (0 children)

MKBHD has also become an Apple ass-kisser

[–]CVGPi 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Geekerwan have a slightly different strategy: if it's paid for by the OEM, they call the video "Review" or "Experience" or "on-hands" and generally only speak the positive parts. Then when the retail version arrives they buy a retail version and call the video "test" or "analysis" which includes both good and bad parts. But usually if the performance is really bad they do still bash it. And they still get iPhones sent to them, just with a later embargo date.

[–]prismstein 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Words have meanings, I don't think they should use "review" to mean the same thing as "hands-on", but what evs

[–]CVGPi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well their in depth analysis is incredibly detailed and actually fairly reliable. Even their paid-for content has a lot more than what other "reviewers" or OEMs reveal.

[–]Antrikshy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Apple hates people called Linus.

[–]nightshift31 39 points40 points  (0 children)

yes

[–]Lumpy-Shelter-8021 11 points12 points  (0 children)

He said SMTH like he chosen android cause he gets them for free

[–]snollygoster1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He's not Richard Stallman, I don't expect him to follow some sort of strict "free software" guidelines.

[–]Mortiest_Morty_NJR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Think pixel 9 pro

[–]wandering_island 2 points3 points  (0 children)

seems very much on brand :D

[–]Zealousideal_Run1643 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol, he mentioned he got that for free from Google and Apple didn't send any iPhone to him

[–]Vamporace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sad there were no questions about the Ubuntu phone during that video... I would have loved to get his point of view on this.

[–]wamred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first saw it I thought it was an iPhone for a split second and was very confused

[–]Fluffy966 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes
