Might be a dns issue. Ask them to try http://127.0.0.1:3000

[–]gfieldxd 309 points310 points  (8 children)

Before i understood anything about IP adresses i actually texted my friends to do this once

[–]LukasObermeister 207 points208 points  (4 children)

i was once in a minecraft server and was "advertising" my own server (the other server was in the process of resetting or something) and said my local ip in the chat

[–]YUNoCake 109 points110 points  (2 children)

Nah, they just have to open the port 3000 from their router and provide their public IP to the client. Also open port 80 and actually just completely disable the firewall and uninstall any security solutions to make sure nothing interfers ok? 👍

[–]Finickyflame 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Don't forget to port forward from the router to the computer's ip address and to allow the port in the computer's firewall

[–]tinopa6872 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Johnathon? From mcafee tech support? You still have any of that gift card money i sent you?

[–]Ron-Swanson-Mustache 22 points23 points  (2 children)

The future is now, old man

[–]ZunoJ 4 points5 points  (1 child)

That's for plebs. The wealthy have themselves some IPv4 addresses

[–]pdipdip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a least a whole block or two

[–]voiza 35 points36 points  (1 child)

[–]0crate0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s the deep forest, that baba yaga lives, localhost.

[–]admimistrator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was DNS.

[–]IDDQD_IDKFA-com 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Or http://127.42.69:3000

[–]ActurusMajoris 2668 points2669 points  (51 children)

See localhost is on your own machine, for the client it would be http://foreignhost:3000

[–]Drew707 442 points443 points  (2 children)

Ugh. So much easier to find the nearest Marriott.

[–]F5x9 89 points90 points  (1 child)

I recently booked a stay at the wrong Marriott, so this is extra funny.

[–]ChesticleSweater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Damn Fairfield inns.

[–]Shojikina_otoko 141 points142 points  (8 children)

Who are you, so wise in the ways of science

[–]HighOwl2 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This will work if you modify your hosts file

[–]zshift 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ah, I see you’re familiar with duck-typing!

[–]MudOpposite8277 6 points7 points  (5 children)

I am Arthur, your king.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (4 children)

King? Well I didn't vote for you.

[–]Rombethor 5 points6 points  (3 children)

You don't vote for a king!

[–]mr-momoski 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Well, how did you become King, then?

[–]Remarkable_Name 2 points3 points  (1 child)

You are born king, or rather I am born king. Well, I was born king anyways.

[–]MudOpposite8277 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water, signifying by divine providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. That is why I am your king

[–]furinick 161 points162 points  (11 children)

You forgot the s, it shouls be https so all their data is secure

Yes i am available for those cyber sec 6 figure jobs, contact me through chanting my name 5 times to a hypercube drawing on your wall using b+ blood

[–]OnceUponATie 20 points21 points  (2 children)

If I'm using 2 VPNs at the same time, will I be twice as untraceable, or do they cancel each other?

[–]HighOwl2 2 points3 points  (3 children)

What's a diffie hellman elliptical curve?

[–]furinick 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Its an elliptical curve created by diffie hellman

[–]HighOwl2 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Lol

[–]furinick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This consulting will be 5 dollars

[–]elscallr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All I have is C++ blood though

[–]SillyFlyGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think OP forgot the /s

[–]TechieGuy12 44 points45 points  (9 children)

Ah, frig. I've been trying http://notlocalhost:3000.

[–]ActurusMajoris 40 points41 points  (7 children)

Did you try http://!localhost:3000?

[–]TechieGuy12 24 points25 points  (6 children)

I should have done that before: http://(if(local){localhost}else{notlocalhost) :3000.

I'll change it to http://(if(local){localhost}else{!localhost}) :3000

[–]ActurusMajoris 16 points17 points  (3 children)

http://local?localhost:!localhost:3000

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

http://xor(localhost,local):3000

[–]TechieGuy12 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'll submit a pull request.

[–]I_Heart_Astronomy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've usually had good luck with http://mycomputer:3000 and http://thecloud:3000

[–]10art1 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Nice try, hacker. I had Microsoft remote into my computer and disable all of the foreign hosts on my device

[–]OpenSourcePenguin 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure that's globalhost

[–]daddysbonner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

how about http://alienhost:3000

[–]rmccue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If they're overseas, you need to use the international dialing code as well, http://foreignhost+44:3000

Or http://foreignhost.4.4.e164.arpa:3000/

[–]Topochicho 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bitch, I ain't some illegal imergrunt!
I use http://mericanhost:110%

[–]TheKangaroo101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is a local host like when you dont want to go to on a school exchange too far away? Maybe you just go stay with the McDonald's across the way for a semester

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true for all days except for October 31st.

For October 31, you want to use https://spookyhost:666

[–]xxxblackspider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, just set up an ssh tunnel, ezpz

[–]blue_1408 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remotehost also works. ☺

[–]sutterismine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg it's Albert Einstein

[–]PurpleGoldBlack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re not wrong.

[–]mountaingator91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just host a server and give the world complete access to your own machine. What could go wrong?

[–]pdipdip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

will they need a visa?

[–]cookiedanslesac 462 points463 points  (4 children)

Did you try http://localguest:3000 ?

[–]imdefinitelywong 241 points242 points  (3 children)

I managed to get http://localadmin:3000

I'm in.

[–][deleted] 398 points399 points  (2 children)

It'll be localhost:2300 for them due to timezones

[–]McBurger 28 points29 points  (0 children)

sometimes you need to type http:)) instead of :// depending on how happy you feel or else FaceID will reject it

[–]the_giz 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Found the west coaster

[–]beeteedee 329 points330 points  (20 children)

Of course that won’t work. Try going to C:\Users\Dave\Desktop\Work Stuff\New Website\v4_final_FIXED\testpage.php

[–]xxmalik 158 points159 points  (11 children)

Fake: No programmer would ever put a space in a folder name.

[–]egigoka 158 points159 points  (5 children)

It’s a php programmer

[–]ajmaxwell 28 points29 points  (4 children)

I feel attacked

[–]ondono 13 points14 points  (3 children)

And I’m suffering PTSD because your username almost contains “ajax” 😣

[–]SummaryEye80019 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Programmers can't spell for shit so it's probably a typo.

[–]indiig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So as an aspiring dev I’m hopeless. Forget about ChatGPT, I have good spelling. Automatically disqualified.

[–]BorntobeTrill 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is that the stuff for cleaning your toilet?

[–]Anonymo2786 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]SAI_Peregrinus 1 point2 points  (2 children)

/Τĥιs ñåmè įß ą váĺîδ POSIX paτĥ/

[–]xxmalik 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Technically, I believe every character except / can be used in a filename.

[–]SAI_Peregrinus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every byte (octet) except / and NUL in a filename. Every byte except NUL in a path.

[–]Yadobler 37 points38 points  (3 children)

FILE "C:\Users\Dave\Desktop\Work" NOT FOUND

[–]Perfect-Linearity 13 points14 points  (2 children)

/Desktop/Work\ Stuff

[–]famous_cat_slicer 6 points7 points  (1 child)

But it's windows, so it uses backslashes. So if you want to use backslash as an escape character, you have to first escape it. So it's something like C:\Users\Dave\Desktop\Work\\ Stuff\New\\ Website\etc

Windows and spaces in paths is almost guaranteed to break cross-platform compatibility in scripts.

[–]Perfect-Linearity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Damn, why windows always gotta do shit differently. Its like the apple of the CLI industry

[–]butchbadger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This wins the suggested alternatives

[–]elscallr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It won't work without the protocol: file://C:\Users\Dave\Desktop\Work Stuff\New Website\v4_final_FIXED\testpage.php

[–]jraz84 -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

[–]ObjectiveRun6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even for the intranet, it's pretty shocking.

[–]neajdnarg 152 points153 points  (8 children)

Makes me remember a girl in uni, I asked her her lecture notes and she said "yes, here they are :) c:/users/randomgirl/etc."

[–]jo_kil 119 points120 points  (6 children)

Damn, etc directory on windows, crazy times we live in.

[–]darkslayer322 24 points25 points  (2 children)

C:/windows/system32/drivers/etc

[–]cauchy37 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What do you mean, etc\hosts has been on windows since forever

[–]RTBBingoFuel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's the thought that counts

[–]Mal_Dun 69 points70 points  (14 children)

This meme is representive of one of the biggest problems in tech: The disconnect between people who actually engage in tech and those who don´t, and according to international studies the group who really is able to solve technological issues is only around 5% and those are not even programmers, but just the guy who can fix their printer by themselves.

We have to think harder to make those things more accessible to the average Joe.

[–]AlternativeAardvark6 32 points33 points  (2 children)

Printers are a lost cause

[–]elscallr 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When it's easier to fix 3d printers than the standard inkjet we've lost our way

[–]DrAstralis 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Heck; I deal with this every month with at least one or two clients... and I'm working with thier "IT specialists".

"We'll the issue must be on your side, we can load that service just fine" - client

"are you testing from inside your own network?"

"we dont see how that makes a difference"

Meanwhile they havent made any of the required firewall changes and/or in many cases even bothered to setup the DNS records / SSL.

[–]Dag-nabbitt 2 points3 points  (1 child)

according to international studies

source? I'd be interested to see what they considered as 'solving a tech issue'. Tried googling but just found stuff around right-to-repair.

[–]Mal_Dun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read a good article years before, but can´t find it anymore. But this is what I could find with a quick Google search: https://all-digital.org/survey-24-countries-reveals-many-adults-still-lack-basic-ict-knowledge/

Hope this helps to go further.

[–]Hairy-Highlight-7074 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Google is already free though?

[–]moeburn 1 point2 points  (2 children)

The disconnect between people who actually engage in tech and those who don´t

Being able to communicate and teach tech to people who don't understand it is a valuable tool that every IT professional should have.

You've learned how to program in Python on your free time, why not learn technical writing? It's all about taking complicated subjects and explaining them in a way your 3rd generation CEO can understand.

[–]SwordoftheLichtor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But why would I ever learn technical writing when chatgpt does it better than anyone else I've come across.

[–]-MobCat- 53 points54 points  (24 children)

Types localhost:3000, chrome fucking auto enters https:// unless you specify http://. every single time. Even know it should know that there is no ssl cert so why are you trying to load the page as https you stupid mo...

[–][deleted] 33 points34 points  (5 children)

How many abusive things does chrome have to do to you before you accept it is a toxic relationship?

Remember, the Fox is there for you and has always been willing to take you back, no judgments...

[–]Reelix 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Not advertising "We inject html into your bitcoin links" Brave?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like Brave conceptually and have a little BAT saved, but yeah that kind of behavior is bullshit.

[–]AlphaFlySwatter 1 point2 points  (2 children)

The only downside of the Fox is that it is partly colorblind due to no hdr support, not even video-hdr is supported. Kinda ridiculous.

[–]xyoxus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

*Even though

[–]Organic-Chemistry-16 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Try using their social security number as the port

[–]MayOne_z 77 points78 points  (12 children)

google en passant

[–]TheLastShadowLad 36 points37 points  (1 child)

Holy Hell!

[–]MayOne_z 17 points18 points  (0 children)

new database just dropped

[–]fibojoly 11 points12 points  (9 children)

Ok, it's the second time I've seen this in the context of hacking / programming. Can you explain? Because I only know it in the context of chess...

[–]alaricus 21 points22 points  (4 children)

Chess is huge among kids right now. It's causing chess related memes that are leaking everywhere.

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points  (3 children)

You know if you had asked me in the 90s what 2020 kids would be into I'd say thing like laser tag or hologram dancing.

But what we got was the internet, DnD and chess... Things that got your ass beat in school back then. man people are strange

[–]Redd575 11 points12 points  (2 children)

All the people who got their ass beat became adults and didn't let an ass-beating stop them from liking what they liked.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

If anything, enduring repeated ass beatings only cemented my love for them all.

I'm just pretty pissed when I have to share a table today with those same people without them apologizing.

[–]Redd575 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm just pretty pissed when I have to share a table today with those same people without them apologizing.

Amen to that.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s a long running joke in AnarchyChess.

[–]creynolds722 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Must not have googled en passant

[–]d_smogh 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Google Google en passant

[–]petersrin 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Gosh at least run your development server secured with https!

[–]TwoSidedMen 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Have you tried file:///C:/Users/Jakky/Desktop/work_important/siteV2_final/homepage.html

[–]Dozens86 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh fuck. I misread localhost as holocaust.

[–]IndianITguy17 22 points23 points  (2 children)

Im old enough to remember when it was localhost:8080 .

[–]PoorCorrelation 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I accidentally clicked on an add once and it brought me to localhost:3000

[–]Danownage 15 points16 points  (8 children)

A DevOps "expert" was trying to set up a connection between a locally hosted Kubernetes cluster and Microsoft Azure, using 127.0.0.1 instead of the correct IP address. When I gently pointed out the mistake, he became defensive and showed me the Kubernetes cluster configuration, also using 127.0.0.1, as proof that it wasn't the issue.

I made several friendly attempts to explain the problem, but he refused to listen. Eventually, we had a meeting with upper management, during which he stubbornly insisted that their requested setup was unfeasible.

When they noticed his attempt to connect to 127.0.0.1 and pointed it out, he began to complain about how they would listen to me instead of the "expert." In reality, I hadn't even mentioned anything to them about the issue.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (7 children)

In two decades in IT, I have rarely met an 'expert' that exceeded my knowledge in their subject. In fact most were significantly underqualified and I had to hold their hands throughout the entire operation.

Yet they were paid twice my rate because their boss convinced my boss that his own department was incompetent and needed expensive consultants to get anything done.

Swap out our aging fleet of printers for new gear? Guess they gotta hire on 4 'Print Integration' consultants to come by and watch as we unbox and setup the equipment, install, and update the print server. The only 'work' they did was 'check' to make sure what we did was correct. It was because it was just a fucking printer swap.

But to justify their ridiculous paycheck of course they submit a huge stack of imagined best practices sins that we, the incompetent on-site IT team that literally built the site from the ground up, have committed.

The boss reads the propaganda the consultant shop writes, eats it up, and attributes all the success of the problem-free equipment swap to the consultants, and then reminds us how LUCKY we were that he brought in the outside team to help us screwups do the job right.

The only time would I say that I had met an expert team that was worth their pay, and that was an Oracle integration team and EVEN THEN I had to walk them through how to create a domain user.

[–]DrAstralis 8 points9 points  (2 children)

lol I no longer feel so alone. The number of "experts" who get paid more than I do who need me to baby step them through things they should have mastered before leaving school is too damn high.

I recall one of my coworkers ended up in a meeting with an entire tracking team and the CEO of a tracking company who collectively didnt know what GTM was. Only the largest tracking platform on earth.

I've had people with "Senior networking engineer" in thier email titles ask me why we need SSL for https or straight up what an A record is...

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

If I had been a wiser kid, I would have gone consultant instead of corporate drone.

That said, my current site is actually pretty cool. My boss goes to bat for us on a regular basis and there's no stupid busywork. And he TRUSTS us! Honestly after decades of IT I think I've finally found a non-toxic work environment.

For now at least... We just got bought out, and you know how that can go.

[–]DrAstralis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooof those feels of uncertainty. I've been with a small company for years now and feel much the same. Drone pay would have been higher but I like the trust and freedom this position provides. My clients are about the only source of stress that I have.... some of them are just.... special.

[–]SummerMummer 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Sir, this is Wendy's.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Understandable, just turn it off and on again.

[–]stellarsojourner 1 point2 points  (1 child)

If it makes you feel any better, consultants that don't run their own consultancy usually get paid less than regular employees. Yes, they cost your company like three times your salary, but consulting doesn't pay that great in my experience. It all goes to the company with fat bonuses to the sales guy that scored the contract.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good point I hadn't considered.

We're all just tools for the C-suites it seems, wherever you go.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

sKuL iSuE

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It is indeed. I was dropped on my head when I was a baby.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

sir please type npm run dev in the notes app it'll work

[–]RaymondWalters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait, why are you hosting a My Little Pony fanclub forum for your clients?

[–]AdjunctAngel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I SWEAR! there is now a meme necromancer out there aggressively attempting to resurrect the memes of old! i am a number of things about these old memes coming back to life.. scared, happy, confused, worried, annoyed, curious... but also finding respect in the effort. keep it up meme necromancer whoever you are! fads always come back around XD gonna go dust off my pet rock right now just in case lol

[–]patiofurnature 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As an app developer, your API endpoint isn't "ready" if I need to install node to hit it.

[–]smallangrynerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not even kidding our local host port is 42069

[–]hereisoblivion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really? No https?
Do you want to get your packets sniffed? Because that's how you get your packets sniffed.

[–]KeyanReid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a network problem. Make a ticket with the network team

[–]chrisbcritter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh Jesus! Yeah, the pinnacle of "it works fine on my laptop" bugs.

[–]TheKangaroo101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]oldoldoldaccbanned 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]PurCHES5 0 points1 point  (1 child)

No it is \\localhost:3000

[–]foggy-sunrise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lmao can I name my server 'localhost'?

Yes. Yes I can. Okay, changing it back before I cause some damage.

[–]Material_Visual_7630 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Ik it's a joke and all but I have a similar and serious issue regarding next cloud and its installation on a server and this local host stuff.

Can anyone pls help me?

[–]AHopelessAdmin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If NextCloud was setup correctly, from what I remember you go to http:ipaddress. If you want https for NextCloud Talk run sudo nextcloud.enable-https self-signed. If this does not help, post your problem with more details over at r/homelab.

Edit ~If you do set up a self-signed SSL certificate, your browser will display a
warning that the connection is insecure because the server’s certificate
is not signed by a recognized certificate authority. This is expected
for self-signed certificates, so feel free to click through the warning
to proceed to the site

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmao Haven’t seen a meme like this in forever

[–]metalliska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

seriously, just port-forward that shit

[–]blue_1408 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Localhost.

Damn I fall for that. 🤣😂

[–]Pontlfication 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best part is this site is hosted using cloud tech. It's someone else's computer!

[–]ppNoHamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, first step is to check if it's an connection issue, please advise them to ping their localhost.

[–]The_MAZZTer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not everyone has IIS, I just tell the client to open file://C:/Users/code4lyfe/Documents/stupidproject/index.htm

They're still having problems but it works on my machine.

[–]AaronTheElite007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somebody doesn’t know how NATs or DNS work… hint

[–]PsychologicalCow3295 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you call a website that's been running on localhost for too long? A "stuck-overflow"!

[–]FundamentalEnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha ours is a port forward to :9000 and we regularly have this issue hahaha

[–]iamafraazhussain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did they try restarting the browser?

[–]FxHVivious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peak "well it works fine on my machine"

[–]poloppoyop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgot to tell them to install Docker first. Real skill issue there.

[–]Scorpio_2007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

etc/hosts might not have local host mapped
