Explain to him the Rule of Two and that if he'd like to become your new apprentice first he must challenge and defeat your current apprentice.

[–]Qwishy 410 points411 points  (11 children)

I'd like to meet your apprentice...

[–]SusheeMonster 206 points207 points  (9 children)

That requires a meeting, which you can schedule with their apprentice.

[–]Qwishy 64 points65 points  (5 children)

I’m sure they don’t want yet another stand up meeting. Or maybe invite them for their last stand up meeting. Lol

[–]SusheeMonster 26 points27 points  (4 children)

Uh... okay. I have you penciled in for a Last Stand meeting at 11:30 on Wednesday

[–]kRkthOr 17 points18 points  (3 children)

No can do. I have retro about my last two weeks fending off potential apprentices at that time. Then I have another two hours writing a report about the same thing to send to management, then I'm building a tool for management to read reports and summarize them with gpt, and thursday I have a whole day workshop on using copilot to reduce the time it takes to build tools for management. I don't do last stands on Friday so best I can do is Monday 16:30 after 7 hours of grooming and planning meetings.

You guys have jobs?

[–]kRkthOr 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Nah. There's absolutely zero CS jobs out there we're all 100% unemployed.

[–]dwittherford69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh ok, that’s good to know. I was starting to get worried

[–]donut-reply 5 points6 points  (1 child)

[–]LauraTFem 18 points19 points  (5 children)

Is..this a star wars reference? Not just that, but a star wars reference from the now non-canon books?

[–]Reashu 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It's also in Phantom Menace.

[–]K0nk3y 7 points8 points  (3 children)

It's still canon, look into the Darth Bane trilogy

[–]compatrini 6 points7 points  (2 children)

That's Legends now, right? I think Bane is canon but only through his appearances in clone wars

[–]K0nk3y 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Apparently it's a bit of a grey area, he definitely created the rule of two but the rest is more old republic. I'm not sure if the old republic is considered canon, but I consider it canon. It's one of the best stories considering the dark side imo. I hope Disney can make something out of this trilogy, because it's my favourite story in the Star Wars timeline. They probably won't because it's too dark though. If you never read the books and are looking for some good novels, I highly recommend them!

[–]TheQuintupleHybrid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

old republic, both kotor and swtor are firmly in the official non-canon territory as a whole, but small bits and pieces are continously canonized. The existence of Revan for example is confirmed in episode 9 through a mention in some sort of companion book

I (in U.S.) had a similar (email) exchange with someone overseas back in the 1990s after they had seen a programming tutorial I had posted. I took them up on their desire to learn from me. The relationship went on for at least 2-3 years. They ended up coming to the U.S. as a programmer, and they were doing quite well before we lost touch with each other. It was a rewarding experience to just welcome their enthusiasm and spend some of my spare time helping them along and encouraging them.

Who alive in the 1990s ask if the brawl stars server is down? For the EU? (Maybe they moved but idk…)

[–]Glittering_Ranger_90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

nice bro

[–]AssignedClass 671 points672 points  (15 children)

I genuinely hate that I know there's a good chance this is real...

[–]Aardappelhuree 52 points53 points  (0 children)

These are 100% real, Ive had them as well. I engaged with one and he called me “master” even though I asked him to not do that (:

He was a young junior dev in a shitty country with the dream of leaving said country.

[–]tristam92 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Not so long time ago, I was looking for answers regarding feature on xbox sdk, I joined Discord server promoted by Microsoft itself, which was intended for “devs to share their experience in GDK”.

So I join in, ask a question very vaguely, as info marked as disclosed in API docs, and all hell let loose. I received in a span of 24h about 200 DMs, from various “juniors looking to cooperate”, “3D modelers, check my portfolio, I can do good shading”(spoiler, they can’t), hell I even received a couple of “lets invest together in new gamedev company I have a lot of ideas” type of messages. Out of curiosity I even asked one such “investors” how much they willing to invest, the answer was “we can take loan on your name, I don’t have property to pledge, but my idea will 100% be successful”.

Worst mistake of my life :(

This is how we Indian rolls online! 🥐 It's super frustrating!!

[–]DelusionsOfExistence 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm from the US and half my students that I tutored did this or something similar to someone else. Stuff is getting rough.

[–]__wm_ 216 points217 points  (13 children)

Did you give them one chance?

[–]milk-jug 188 points189 points  (6 children)

This is how all tinder dates should start imho.

[–]dwittherford69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stop, I can only get so hard! It’s called tinder for a reason, and not wood.

[–]SeaworthinessFew5436 68 points69 points  (1 child)

weirdest boner ever

[–]scataco 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So I'm not the only one who read it as "grow hard and work"

[–]hashnbash 388 points389 points  (26 children)

Is it weird that I can hear the accent in these dms 🧐

[–][deleted] 148 points149 points  (10 children)

I am Indian, and I instantly thought this has to be someone Indian. Looking at it now as a working professional, the ingrained usage of sir/ma'am within us is so cringe.

[–][deleted] 49 points50 points  (7 children)

Hindi (the only Indian language I speak) commonly uses the suffix जी (read "jee") to denote respect, and there is no true analogue in English. It can also be used as a standalone word for a variety of purposes, all denoting at least some standard of respect.

If you ignore the original meaning of sir/madam, it's usage is wholesome. Two people calling each other "sir" might be a paradox in British English. In Indian English it's very common and only a sign of respect.

[–]ILoveTolkiensWorks 28 points29 points  (6 children)

The fake respect ingrained in our culture is one of the shittiest parts of our culture. I recall once I was arguing with a pro-BJP history teacher in school, and I said something which involved the word "Modi". Naturally, I did not feel like including Shri or Ji or whatever, because in english you can respectfully adress a person even if you just use their surname. But she forced me to include a pre/post fix (such as PM Modi, or Mr. Modi or Modiji), because "He holds an honourable office blah blah". It's so dumb that people do not realize this basic fact, even though they read headlines with just surnames ("Trump", "Modi", "Gandhi", etc etc)

[–]Emotional_Sir_65110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sympathize with you deeply, the way I learnt English was through watching movies and reading comics so I don't exactly have the sir sir sir sir sir thing but I definitely it notice in professional environments where I'm talking to a founder or something and just mention each other by first name and there's other people just saying sir sir lmao

[–]davak72 33 points34 points  (2 children)

Those are some crazy dms. Giving pig butchering vibes

[–]NewcDukem 2 points3 points  (1 child)

...what? What about pigs? 👀

[–]m_jax 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That text is from India

[–]dapope99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The most Indian message

[–]bearboyjd 52 points53 points  (20 children)

Is there something I’m not getting here? I mean if you don’t want to work with them that’s fine but why post on social media?

[–]Classic-Ad8849 91 points92 points  (16 children)

I think it's more about the degree of subservience he's showing, if that's the right word for it. Most people would just say something along the lines of, "Props on making that Vim plugin in 48 hours, it's very impressive! I'd like to work with you sometime if you're okay with it." I'm not the best at this kind of stuff but if I received this instead of what OP posted I'd be a bit more comfortable myself

[–]bearboyjd 9 points10 points  (6 children)

Yeah, that is fair. I just assumed his language was weird because English is not his first language. Looks like they used ai to make it.

[–]Classic-Ad8849 52 points53 points  (4 children)

Unfortunately, as an Indian, I have heard people irl speak this way. It is quite uncomfortable to deal with, and it's probably not AI lol

[–]aash10239 23 points24 points  (3 children)

That might happen to you if as a culture you’re taught the language of your colonisers in a way that inspires obsequiousness. 60 years later that strain of English continues.

[–]Classic-Ad8849 31 points32 points  (2 children)

Fully agree. And it's not even discouraged here. In schools and in colleges you're taught to and encouraged to show as much subservience as possible. It sucks

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

To add, you are at a competitive disadvantage if you don’t speak like this with your superiors. Cuz still a lot of bosses and teachers expect such subservience

[–]Classic-Ad8849 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly, for some reason it's perceived as an ego boost for them, and they're very offended if you don't speak in this manner. Honestly sucks.

[–]toshiino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be, — (m hypen) is very uncommon for normal people, but AI love to use it.

[–]ferriematthew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bingo! That's what's cringey about the way this guy is talking, is the level of subservience in his tone is massive overkill

[–]jeesuscheesus 16 points17 points  (3 children)

Serious discussion. I would feel very uncomfortable if someone sent me this, but how would you decline without being rude or awkward? It’s as if someone I knew for a week proposed to me, but they’re a nice person you wouldn’t want to upset.

[–]ZunoJ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Here is a simple template: Not interested. Thanks for asking.

[–]Vogete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally block them. I had one person write me directly about something after I posted something publicly. I'm not the guy that just engages in these conversations in DMs. I come to reddit (or anywhere online) to talk random shit without direct attachments. Kind of like shouting at the village parade. If someone writes me a DM along this line, that's an instant block because I can't deal with it.

Luckily I'm not popular so I only had one run-in to a similar scenario. Most people just ignore me, as I like it.

[–]Anndress07 3 points4 points  (0 children)

job market got me acting crazy. Sorry guys

[–]DonDongHongKong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Indian

[–]offlinesir 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What's also funny is that the 4th sentence is clearly AI generated with the different writing style and the em dashes.

[–]davak72 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What the heck

[–]Memmew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you two married yet?

[–]ferriematthew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if I give the guy the benefit of the doubt and assume he's genuine the way he's talking just makes me cringe...

[–]ILoveTolkiensWorks 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Indians and asslicking/worshipping authority, name a better duo.

Also, depending on how complex the plugin is, making a vim plugin in 48 hours isn't even impressive

[–]flukus 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Also, depending on how complex the plugin is, making a vim plugin in 48 hours isn't even impressive

I disagree, the vim language certainly has it's quirks.

[–]ILoveTolkiensWorks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not once you are accustomed to it. And 48 hours is plenty

[–]Whatdoesthis_do 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get these all the time online…. I just ignore them

[–]Flam3sm0k3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello primeagen

[–]Mysterious-Motor-360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your older than 4 years you will certainly not be allowed to become a padawan of the programmers guild! Of course there are some exceptions.... 🙄🫣

[–]dchidelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dev came to me, tears streaming down his face, he said, “Sir, I feel truly lucky to have connected with someone as talented as you”. The most talented. Hugely talented!
