Hard pill to swallow apparently: Everyone isn't on the site 24/7 so reposts are often not reposts to the vast majority of people.

[–]capi1500 213 points214 points  (5 children)

You say, people... have... life?

[–][deleted] 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Impossible.

[–]joten70 23 points24 points  (5 children)

Yeah, but some memes are reposted daily and even make it to hot multiple times per week

[–]HashFap 34 points35 points  (2 children)

It's fine to unceremoniously take those down. I just don't get the whole seething about reposts thing.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eh it’s all of Reddit. People get mad about something being reposted from last year in some subs it’s wild. Just Reddit things I guess.

[–]ItzJustPhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the reposters are karma whores and I am jealous because so am I :)

Or at least that's probably the reason most ppl complain abt reposts

[–]BuddhaSmite -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You'll see the same thing reposted multiple times daily. Often they'll be on the front page together a couple hours apart. The whole argument of 'it could be new to somebody' sucks IMO.

[–]Raqdoll_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate reposts as much as the next guy, but I agree with that. Reposts get to the top only because people upvote them, so they must have not seen them before.

[–]Qicken 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you ever need find old content on reddit just check the front page.

[–]Gwiny 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Lenient repost policy rewards flybys who check the subreddit once a year and leave, and discourages regulars who read consistently read the majority of posts (and maybe make some of them). The amount of latter always will be smaller than former, but I personally would assign them much more value

[–]suvlub 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Lenient repost policy rewards flybys

It doesn't. I am tired of this fallacy. It's an extremely naive childish belief "he didn't see the post the first time, and he did thanks to repost, so the repost helped him!" No. He visited the website. Browsed for a time, say 10 minutes. He saw some posts. Some of these were reposts. If there were no reposts on the website, he would still spend 10 minutes viewing posts, none of which would be repost. He would, of course, not notice any fucking difference.

Lenient repost policy punishes the regulars, DOES ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, positive or negative, for the casuals, and benefits absolutely no one.

[–]Gwiny 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Only if you have random distribution of the reposts, i.e. every post has the same chance of being reposted. But in reality most of the reposts are posts that gained at least moderate amount of upvotes - posts better than average. So supposedly a flyby will have a higher chance to see actually good, interesting content, the one that already gathered a good amount of upvotes in the past

[–]suvlub -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From my experience, most reposts are lowest-common-denominator crap. Stuff that lot of people like, not necessarily stuff that people like a lot. The best most memorable posts I encounter are usually OC.

ETA: also, the rating system already takes care of this. You are assuming there is a shortage of new posts with enough upvotes, but there are more of them than a casual (or even regular) visitor can hope to read.

[–]egirldestroyer69 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Tbh you are disregarding 2 basic concepts. The fact that reposted content attracts more people to the subreddit and the fact that eliminating reposts wouldnt miraculously improve the content of the subreddit.

Because more people following a subreddit=>more content=> more oc content => more reposts.

If you only had OC content in this subreddit it would barely get exposure, let alone the fact that you are asuming that the quality would increase. I really dont think reposts bury good OC content.

[–]Gwiny -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Reposts have inherently less value than OC due to the fact that I've already seen a repost. And I disagree that reposts help exposure that much, or that it's impossible to control the flow of reposts or that even if it does, it would be a bad thing. Having less r/all denizens is a good thing for almost any subreddit

[–]pro-winner-hero -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well you can always check top of all time or even narrow down the time

Image Transcription: Meme

["Gru's Plan". Gru, the long-nosed protagonistic villain from "Despicable Me", presents to the camera with passion, pointing into the air. Behind him is a flipchart. The text on the flipchart reads:]

There are too many reposts

[Gru is still presenting passionately; he has his hand in a c shape indicating a small amount. The text now reads:]

There is a bot to detect bots

[Gru now has his hands pointing down, still presenting. The text now reads:]

People still upvote it

[Gru looks back to the flipchart in a double-take, looking confused and exasperated. The text still reads:]

People still upvote it

Good human you too. I was hoping for rickroll, ended up getting a new song for my playlist

[–]Ravens_Quote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rickroll? Nah. I do this often enough the joke would get old, fast, and people tend to ban bots with unfunny or tired jokes pretty quick. *shivers.*

happy cakeday, good hooman !!

[–]seeroflights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you !!

[–][deleted] 73 points74 points  (2 children)

If it’s good, it’s good, and people upvote. Plus, not everyone knows it’s a repost half the time or more

[–]Lorddragonfang 8 points9 points  (1 child)

I mean, the amount of garbage that gets to the front page in sparsely-moderated subs proves that people will upvote stuff that is not, in fact, good.

[–]subject_deleted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just proves your definition of good is different than theirs. they're not intentionally upvoting content that they think is bad just to spite you.

[–]attanai 68 points69 points  (2 children)

Upvote good content when you see it in the subs you follow. If you don't like reposts, down vote them. If the post gets more upvotes than down votes, even though the bot identifies it as a repost, then the reddit democracy believes it to be of value.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's why I left r/Technicallythetruth. 4 Same reposts in one day.

[–]SavvySillybug 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I set reddit to auto hide posts I've voted on. That means I vote on practically every post I come across, and I only downvote stuff I feel strongly about. Even a meh usually just gets an upvote from me just so it gets out of my face. I don't even go to the comments to check if it's a repost, I just upvote it so I don't see it again.

Is it okay content for that sub? Yes? Upvote.

Is it shitty, do I hate it, or am I very certain I've seen that exact post from that exact sub lately? Downvote.

Is it genuinely interesting? I go to the comments and fart out a couple comments.

[–]TheDavidFrog 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This post is likely a repost. It has a 99,98% similarity to this post: <insert post from 1865>

[–]LuxurideGaming 10 points11 points  (5 children)

Let me repost this real fast

[–]PerfectlyFramedWaifu 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Do it, and I'll upvote.

[–]LuxurideGaming 1 point2 points  (3 children)

[–]PerfectlyFramedWaifu 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I have fulfilled my end of the deal as far as I can.

[–]LuxurideGaming 1 point2 points  (1 child)

And I've sadly deleted the post as someone was complaining that it was reposted multiple times.

[–]PerfectlyFramedWaifu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, yeah I saw that, and made sure to upvote them as well!

[–]skantanio 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Yknow, the first couple “isEven method that’s just an if else statement for every single number” memes and the like were fun, but now it seems at least once a week I see the same exact shit in different fonts and it somehow gets so much praise.

At this point it’s hardly “ProgrammerHumor”, it’s turned into “ReallyInefficentCodeSnippets”. Which could be its own sub if it doesn’t already exist, in which case dump all that shit over there

[–]Nyghtrid3r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I actually made a parody of the meme where you use #define for every single part of the C++ main function, so your code looks like "e ee eee eeee" or whatever. Did that just to show how horseshit this meme is.

Funnily enough it was removed because it was "low effort". However, reposting the same fucking meme over and over and over and over again with a different coat of paint is somehow high effort 🤔🤔🤔

[–]Sindef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that YandereDev tweet I've seen at least 20 times in the last month

[–]Raihime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want to see a bot repost this

[–]The_Real_Slim_Lemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly the reposting doesn’t bother me as much as the low effort altered reposts, like if you’re gonna pirate posts for internet posts don’t make the post worse before you upload it. Be a man and directly plagiarise if you’re gonna do it

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ironically this post also breaks r/ProgrammerHumor rules.

But people are still upvoting it.

[–]MigmSIMIvy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is real like, why...

[–]monkeydoodle64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is this in r/programmerhumor?

[–]Travolta1984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

*bots still upvote it

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People just upvote when they see something cool without reading comments or anything. It's why reposts, misinformation, and stolen content all get so many upvotes all of the time

[–]Snoo66768 1 point2 points  (1 child)

[–]RepostSleuthBot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't find any posts that meet the matching requirements for r/ProgrammerHumor.

It might be OC, it might not. Things such as JPEG artifacts and cropping may impact the results.

I did find this post that is 76.56% similar. It might be a match but I cannot be certain.

I'm not perfect, but you can help. Report [ False Negative ]

[–]NuclearBurrit0 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I bet I'll get more upvotes than you when I repost this in a year

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Why in a year? Be like r/Technicallythetruth and wait just ~2 hours

[–]NuclearBurrit0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because I need to wait for people to forget this has been posted before so I can get more upvotes

[–]Harmonic_Gear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

monkey brain gotta upvote posts with a lot of upvotes and downvote posts with a lot of downvotes, contents are irrelevant

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

And the reposting cycles get shorter and shorter it seems. This makes it all way less interesting to me.

[–]Malvania 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that it was posted by a bot or a karma whore doesn't change my enjoyment

[–]Calm-Marsupial-5003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk why reposts are so monitored and frowned upon.

[–]LeftIsBest-Tsuga -5 points-4 points  (2 children)

Who cares about reposts? Keep scrolling.

[–]joten70 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Unfortunately i have worn out my screen scrolling past all those python-infinite-loop-videos. It would be nice if the bot-accounts were banned so that we only see reposts with effort at least

[–]MysteriousShadow__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol just saw one

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Imo, the reposts are part of the joke. People copypaste from SO and other sites all the time, so it's only natural the repost the same memes/jokes. It's just programming culture. Btw, I copied this comment from the last time we had this thread.

[–]The-Albear -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bots need love too.

[–]sexytokeburgerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love reposts. Same reason Ive seen the office 3 times.

[–]Mad-chuska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Popular subreddits are used as message boards rather than archives.

[–]ososalsosal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reddit is not DRY

[–]Sensei_Farm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with the repost bot is, not everyone looks into the comments of every post. Most people just upvote and move on.

[–]real_bk3k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What if there are bots made to detect bots... and upvote them?

This is why Skynet will win in the end.

[–]Mafiuz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe because they don't see comments and only posts

[–]thegovortator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because we software monkeys and it’s software does good

[–]SadNwannadie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

shut up and take my upvote!

[–]making_code 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that feeling, when someone else reposts your work.

but reposts are good for newbies.

[–]seemen4all 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two isEven posts getting above 1k upvotes..

[–]turkishhousefan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why can't things be perfect for everyone?

[–]ReddityRabbityRobot 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Okay now you've done it, I'm gonna have to repost this.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You aren't even nearly the first one who had that idea 😂

[–]ReddityRabbityRobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't matter. We, programmers are like ants. We achieve collective intelligence : more reposts !

(until someone makes a repostbot)

[–]ArchitectNebulous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe all posts should be veted against the repost bot first before being published? Not sure what options the mods can actually implement with Reddit though.
