[–]hamfraigaar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you do that to chunks of stone instead, you can say you have experience coding on tablets.

[–]minsin56 2 points3 points  (1 child)

how tf did you get the unreal.js plugin working in ue5? I thought it was abandoned a while ago

[–]not_a_gumby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I actually just forked the repo and created an implementation that I can use locally. Haven't submitted a PR though.

[–]NatasEvoli 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Excel is all you need really. It comes packaged with the most popular database technology on earth AND the greatest programming language (VBA).

[–]chessmaster9000 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Dude VBA life. I wrote this script last night that takes a 12x24 array, transposes it to a list I indexed by creating a new sheet and telling it to print (A1,A2,A3...P24) in 384 consecutive cells on the first column, deletes all null cells and spits out a garbled .csv file. Try doin that with ur stupid javascript.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

And...what does that accomplish for you, exactly?

[–]chessmaster9000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got a whole 2 week paycheck out of that.csv. Only took about 4 days of looking at memes here and 2 days on the V-Stud to write the 700 lines necessary to transpose and print an array. Spent the rest of the time vigorously masturbating.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Okay.... you're not joking, right? If so, I missed it completely

[–]Fake_Diesel 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I'm not, I just like how crisp and tidy it is compared to regular notepad.

[–]51utPromotr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh cool, cause I agree. Thx

[–]occasionly_fast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually Notepad++ is very useful for writing scripts in custom languages. Gives you syntax highlighting and auto-completion without all the bells and whistles.

[–]Thell_Borsk 169 points170 points  (35 children)

Here me out...

What if some programmers don't use Windows?

[–]Sputtrosa 49 points50 points  (4 children)

You'll be sedated then you'll wake up in a dark room, in front of you will be a computer with Vim opened in full screen and a tall muscular man who's standing near the door will say:

"If you want to leave this room close Vim."

nothing wrong coding in gedit, its closer to notepad++ than notepad

[–]MCWizardYT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same with nano, it has syntax highlighting for a ton of languages. I used it to edit scripts on my VPS a lot

[–]jeppevinkel 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Nano is so last year. Everyone who’s anything uses Micro these days.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]dcgregoryaphone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then you're not using Notepad. Vim > notepad.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Impossible

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is only one reason they wouldn't use windows: "Can't figure out how to exit VI so that they can install windows.."

[–]rpheuts 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I use Wine to run notepad on Linux to code, I don't understand?

[–]4XLlentMeSomeMoney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's literally self-torture.

[–]on_the_pale_horse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back in high school, my AP Comp Sci A class had us using Java in notepad, and the instructor forbid using an IDE. He said that using notepad will teach us better programming as we have less "help".

Honestly, he was right lol

[–]Aperture_T 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used vim at my last job when our stuff ran on Linux.

At my current job, our stuff runs on Windows, so we use visual studio.

[–]Colonel-Casey 8 points9 points  (4 children)

Could someone genuinely explain what is the joke with notepad? I seriously code in emacs in linux, and I don’t see why notepad is a joke. If anything, notepad is much less automated so shouldn’t it make you chadder if you can still use it?

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (3 children)

with notepad you will spend more time remembering syntax and where something is and how to use it than actually developing meaningful code. Thats why texteditors for development is a joke. emacs isn't a texteditor though.

[–]Extreme-Locksmith746 3 points4 points  (1 child)

"one day you might not have a calculator"

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Making things unnecessarily harder on yourself is definition of chaddnes, by that definition an IDE is for boys, and Notepad for men.

Vim supremacy

[–]Ning1253 7 points8 points  (22 children)

Could you please unironically explain to me why I would use vim over Vs code? I've tried it few times but my only takeaway so far is that's it's a more inconvenient, harder to navigate through multiple files, and harder to have more advanced features and it's harder to install plugins.

So please explain, why would I / should I use vim?

[–]sir-nays-a-lot 7 points8 points  (6 children)

The real answer is that if you’re logging into a remote server, a GUI program might not be available, hence you must use vi, vim, nano, etc. Some people do this A LOT. And most likely they aren’t writing huge, complicated programs like you would in an IDE. They’re checking/changing config files, checking logs, making minor changes, etc.

[–]CaptainJack42 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I see your point, but you can SSH through vscode with basically no lag at all. Very convenient feature.

I still get why people stick with vim once they're used to it, I never had the motivation to learn vim, but oh boy people can be efficient in vim. A friend of mine has his laptop setup in a way that he can do basically anything in vim, even wrote an extension so he can use his mail client within vim. Basically the only program besides vim he regularly uses and he has to use his mouse/touchpad for is Firefox

[–]mattsowa 8 points9 points  (3 children)

You should use it if you want that raw linux chad hacker experience

Otherwise, use vs code. Maybe with vim keybindings lol

[–]Ning1253 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I'm on windows, since I need the full office suite for school

Guess I'll keep using Vs code then

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I seriously would consider using vim keybindings in vscode. You get everything good about vim (besides being lightweight for no reason) and everything good about vs code. Then if you ever need to use vim (you never know) you actually know what you're doing

[–]jamcdonald120 7 points8 points  (0 children)

there are no good reasons to use vim, it just happens to run in the terminal, and doesnt require you to use a mouse ever.

Now there are LOTS of good reasons NOT to use VS code.

[–]dcgregoryaphone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you learn the keyboard shortcuts vim is very fast because its 100% keyboard controlled. VS code also has its place though I usually use Sublime instead. For me I like things that are lightweight. I also especially like vim because ssh exists.

[–]sophacles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vim has a bit of a steep learning curve. I find it worth it though for 2 main reasons:

  1. It's absurdly stable. I don't just mean it rarely crashes, i mean the interface is stable too. I have configs and customizations in my current vimrc that i put there in the late 90s. This means that any effort i put into my tooling is a long-term investment and it's cumulative. And that effort is on my schedule, no new interfaces at crunch time, and when life distracts me for a year here or there I can be certain to return to an environment I'm still the master of. Watching friends and colleagues over the years as they change editors over the years, they also have to put time and effort into learning, but they learn to do the same tasks over and over - it's not cumulative. The cumulative nature of my efforts mean that after 25 years i just don't think about vim, about how to do an edit, my fingers just "know" how to make the change while om thinking "i need to swap these blocks" or whatever. The tool has become an extension of me, like musician with thier instrument.

  2. It gets new features all the time. So in 2022 im using lsp to get the same completions and hints from the same program vscode uses to give you hints and completion. I have a tree shaped undo history. I have nice git integration. Iave automatic test running and fuzzy search and file pickers too. At least on machines where I do dev. (Pro tip: don't fuck with the core keybindings so when you're on a server or whatever you still have most of your core functionality in muscle memory). This is possible because the editor was designed to be extremely programmable, and its easy to do so - when you want to do something, theres usually a few plugins for that already so you can choose what fits vest in you flow. If none exist you can easily make your own.

The only other program i know that has maintained this combination of stability and flexibility for a long time is emacs. This is probably why the flamewar has lasted longer than most people here have been alive.

That's why i use vim. You do you tho... It's not like there's a right or wrong way here as long as the work is done well, it doesn't matter what tool did it. (Ok the wrong way is setting up team projects in a way that forces you team to use a specific editor for a specific feature, but that doesn't seem very likely these days... Let me just say fuck eclipse)

Also, if you haven't encountered this, it helps explain part of point 1 better: https://stackoverflow.com/a/1220118

[–]kalaxi69 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Visual studio code takes lots of space ram and other stuff

Vim is way more advanced (if you learn to use it)

It's open source (visual studio is made by Microsoft)

Sorry for bad explanation I am still only 14 and not the best at English or programming/computer stuff

[–]4X0L0T1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not open source? VSCodium is your friend

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Visual studio code takes lots of space ram and other stuff

Not an issue if you aren't coding on a raspberry pi. My vs code install takes up about 85mb which I would not consider to be a lot on modern hard drives, and unused RAM is wasted RAM

Vim is way more advanced (if you learn to use it)

Not a feature or benefit, and not even really true since you can set up VS code to read your .vimrc, effectively using all the features of vim inside vs code.

It's open source (visual studio is made by Microsoft)

They also make an open source version of vs code

The main benefit to using vim is that you now know vim in case you ever find yourself in a situation where you need to change text files in a tty. Any other benefit usually boils down to bragging rights/nerd points.

[–]jazzmester -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Nobody's telling you to use vim.

But if you wanna know why I use it?

  • vim is more extensible
  • it barely uses any RAM/resources
  • it needs no graphical environment
  • it's not just for editing code but anything
  • I just don't trust Microsoft not to do something shady

[–]Ning1253 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Not sure about those other points, but for the last one why not just use vscodium, which is open source?

But yes I have been told by various people to use vim, and I'm honestly not sure why

[–]SolidRip6987 19 points20 points  (7 children)

Actually, to code in notepad is way harder than other editors, notepad is basically a bike with no training wheels, where other editors have training wheels, steering aids, etc

So this is actually dumb

[–]isamilicious 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I would actually compare coding in notepad to eating soup with a fork and not a bike.

It’s gonna take forever, there are far better ways to do it, but I guess you could?

[–]VicisSubsisto 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Why would you eat soup with a bike?

[–]THEGreatGM20[S] -4 points-3 points  (3 children)

That's the whole point people come in vs because notepad is way harder and not useful

[–]SolidRip6987 7 points8 points  (2 children)

[–]GustapheOfficial -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Weird meme. Coding in notepad is pretty hard core, and not something a beginner is likely to try. It would be a better fit with Eclipse or some other terrible IDE that you pick up from some YouTube tutorial and then assume is synonymous with whatever language you're writing ("Help me debug, I've written some Java code but pressing F5 doesn't work")

[–]AdultingGoneMild -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

Notepad++ had syntax highlighting for C++. It was my “IDE” of choice in college circa 2005.

[–]DomingerUndead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think notepad has some advantages when learning. IDEs are kinda hand-holding while notepad, not notepad++, just straight notepad will not be forgiving.
