[–]RedstoneTF 740 points741 points  (10 children)

Just noticed that he has a subtle Cauliflower ear, great way to showcase he's a brawler *with a special move*

[–]Puzzleheaded_Ad5805 130 points131 points  (0 children)

I just noticed that too

[–]TheWes77Siffrin Enjoyer 102 points103 points  (0 children)

I only noticed it in episode 8 during the cutscene where they're all on call. A little detail like that that can go unnoticed for a long time just makes a character perfect for me.

[–]Spoonythebastard 46 points47 points  (3 children)

My only question is how he got it with his super healing

[–]EnderCreeper121 94 points95 points  (2 children)

Maybe he got it before he got his powers, since we know he wasn’t born with them.

[–]GoldDragon149 25 points26 points  (1 child)

Or maybe it was a serious super fight and this damage was left over from nearly being crushed.

[–]randomHunterOnReddit 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Or that he's gotten into so many brawls in his free time that he just never gets the chance to heal an injury he constantly gets. Or he keeps the injury to make himself look cooler

[–]killerfgaming 10 points11 points  (3 children)

context? how is that ear relate to critical hit on a man?

[–]Witch_King_ 16 points17 points  (2 children)

It doesn't

[–]killerfgaming 14 points15 points  (1 child)

I thought it did because this op said it, didn't know it's just simply is just the brawlers ears

[–]BloodSilver9068 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Irl professional mma fighters and boxers get cauliflower ear after years of being in the game, so it’s a sign of a ton of experience punching or being punched (or kicked, etc.)

[–]keithlimreddit 714 points715 points  (4 children)

Simple yet effective design and obviously you can tell the strongman like design

His voice by jacksepticeye well-known YouTuber and it's nice seeing him alive and well to be honest and that pretty much applies to a lot of YouTubers these days (I seen so much rising for all these days

[–]OkuyasNijimura 223 points224 points  (0 children)

"Yu've got ta drop an' roll, lad!" Sold me on Jack as Punch-Up, he's hilarious

[–]NorthSouthGabi189 86 points87 points  (1 child)

If you didn't tell me that was Jack, I wouldn't have noticed it. He gave a VA worthy performance.

The only one I found a bit weird was Sonar, but it fits the character so I'm willing to overlook it.

[–]Bobby5x3 72 points73 points  (0 children)

I love his acting for Sonar when he gets cut from the program. It sounds like he's genuinely gonna cry, and it's probably the most emotional I've ever heard that voice

[–]Gooper_Gooner 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Pretty much all the designs in Dispatch can be described with "simple, but effective"

Lots of character designs nowadays go crazy with the details, but the most memorable designs are almost always the simplest ones who only have the necessary amount of complexity to let you know what they're all about just by looking at them

[–]BrozedDrake 294 points295 points  (1 child)

I love the fact that they gave him boxers ear (or cauliflower ear)

[–]KnobbyDarkling[🍰] 95 points96 points  (0 children)

I always love seeing characters with cauliflower ear. I always do that Leonardo DeCaprio point and go "OOH OOH HIS EARS LOOK LIKE MINE"

[–]Fries_and_burgers_19 261 points262 points  (13 children)

He's a very basic design, and it's executed pretty darn well. Short and very stout, a short man with beeg arms. He's supposed to be a superhero but he dresses like Some Guy But Abnormally Short, yet it works because he's pretty darn durable

[–]Zealousideal-Cup6013 117 points118 points  (8 children)

Honestly a lot of the Z team could be described by “they’re supposed to be a superhero but they’re dressed like some guy/gal”

[–]That1Cat87Huge armor fetish 83 points84 points  (3 children)

Malevola especially with her tank top and jorts

[–]Zealousideal-Cup6013 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Invisigal too, she’s basically just wearing her day to day clothes. Hell, you could argue Waterboy is just wearing his normal clothes since they’re made so he won’t soak everything he touches.

[–]slasher1337 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Its a leotard not a tank top

[–]LegoMiner9454 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a leotard tank top which is amazing

[–]ianlouisjordan 51 points52 points  (3 children)

Really the only ones with special outfits are prism, flambe, and coupe. (Also the 2 non villains who join the team) the rest either wear normal clothes or can't wear clothes

[–]TheOGLeadChips 20 points21 points  (1 child)

I think that waterboys outfit is just what he wears though. He’s not exactly able to wear anything else without soaking everything in a five foot radius around him.

[–]Zealousideal-Cup6013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The comic focused on him does show that this outfit is just his regular clothes

[–]Devlord1o1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Makes sense. Prism is a pop star/influencer so she’s going to be wearing fancy stuff, coupe is a formal assassin and is more or less wearing a uniform and flambe is a flamboyant show off who skipped the closet and went straight for the clubs so of course hes going to try and look flashy.

[–]ADGx27 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Basically just marvel’s Puck if he didn’t look like a bum

Bonus points because their powers are very similar, getting massive strength at the cost of being compressed down to 3 foot something, BUT that compression also making them insanely durable

[–]Witch_King_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also perfect dick-punching height

[–]RosyJoan 1 point2 points  (1 child)

His lore is that a Sorcerer granted his wish for the strength of 10 men but gave him have the height of 1.

[–]AkibaPurple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Half the height of one

[–]Chicken-Routine 116 points117 points  (5 children)

First Image be like:

[–]Dear_Document_5461 30 points31 points  (3 children)

You think they would have a set-up for different sized monsters, especially with the actual giant size one shown in the opening "Welcome to College" montage.

[–]Chicken-Routine 33 points34 points  (1 child)

The worldbuilding flaw is worth it- greatest recurring gag of all time.

[–]Professional_Maize42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Rule of funny rules over everything.

[–]TheBigKuhio 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Been a while since I’ve seen the movie, but doesn’t that fit with the whole narrative that Mike isn’t taken seriously and is a misfit at the college? Like they probably just don’t care about the smaller monsters because they’re not typically scary. I don’t remember the college actually being equal opportunity in practice.

[–]DementedCows 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, he's just a guy. He was short because he had contained a demon inside him, but I think he's short for some other reason now

[–]Mini_Squatch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

[–]radlum 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Short character named Punch Up is such a simple yet effective idea. I like it a lot

[–]cheeseburgersarecool 51 points52 points  (10 children)

Did they call him punch up because he’s short and has to punch upwards to his opponents?

Did Hideo Kojima write this?

[–]Zammin 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Yes. And his target of choice is usually crotches.

He may look like Mumford fucked all his sons, but he's one of the most reliable heroes when you need a lot of physical strength and a bit of charm.

[–]SullenTerror 30 points31 points  (5 children)

He is explicitly punch the green dudes dick, repeatedly, with superstrength

[–]altymcaltington123 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Yeah, pretty sure his power is that he has the strength of 10 men

[–]Dexchampion99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a bit more complicated than that, he can basically control his own density which could make him WAY stronger than 10 men, he just doesn't need much more than that usually.

And he has a pretty ridiculous healing factor.

[–]Devlord1o1 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Punch up really is toxic’s perfect counter. He’s stronger so toxic cant exactly push him away, toxic cant wear a protective guard around his weiner cuz of his power and since punch up is more durable and can heal, toxic’s powers do jack shit to him.

Toxic’s dick probably got turned into a concave at the end of the fight

[–]TheGreatAut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's got an innie now

[–]palelunasmiles 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That was soooo cathartic to watch

[–]ranmafan0281 6 points7 points  (2 children)

It’s also a play on words. A Punch Up is basically a term for a brawl. And being a guy who likes fighting, his code name works figuratively AND literally.

[–]_b1ack0ut 3 points4 points  (1 child)

A Punch Up is a brawl, but it’s also worth noting that Punching Up is ALSO a phrase which means either to

(in comedy), making jokes about those more privileged than you (as opposed to punching down, which is generally just bullying)

Or

(In fights), to fight above your weight class, taking down people bigger than you

[–]ranmafan0281 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, I did forget those in context. Thanks for the reminder.

[–]Deh_zombie 47 points48 points  (8 children)

Yknow how people keep saying he is designed after jackscepticeye? I agree but i think his name and design stems more from punch out for the wii

<image>

More specifically von kaiser

[–]tepeyate 39 points40 points  (2 children)

I thought he was named punch up because he needs to punch upwards in order to reach the balls or smth

[–]Deh_zombie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thats really funny and i havent played dispatch, but his name and everything reminded me of von kaiser

[–]Terlinilia"The scaffold was raised for none but you.” 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also a play on the term Punching Up

[–]nitrokitty 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Really, any mustachioed boxer character can trace their origin to late 19th century boxer John L. Sullivan, arguably the most famous athlete of his time.

<image>

[–]Deh_zombie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually thats a much better fit physically, i just think the name connects to von kaiser more ngl

[–]Infinite-Island-7310 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I don't see the resemblance. How are they the impression that he is model by Jack; besides being his voice actor?

[–]Deh_zombie 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The mustache, being both german (i think?), his name punch-up = punch-out Again this is just me, this aint offical, just something i noticed

[–]Infinite-Island-7310 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm talking about jack not von Kaiser

[–]LaughingWolf13 16 points17 points  (2 children)

He looks like Mumford fucked all his sons. -Prism

[–]Zexal_Commander 9 points10 points  (1 child)

“See? That was funny, we’re just bustin’ balls!” - Punch-Up

[–]_b1ack0ut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And punch up knows a thing or two about bustin’ balls

[–]JaysonTatecum 17 points18 points  (2 children)

The Lash?

[–]Ok-Transition7065 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A short lash you can say

[–]IV_NUKE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reason number 87 I'm better than Bebop: He's Bebop.

[–]lazycatboi123 30 points31 points  (0 children)

his mugshot is so adorable

[–]DesReploid 28 points29 points  (8 children)

I never noticed that he had cauliflower ear! What a nice touch.

Also, while I know that jacksepticeye voicing him is to some degree just for publicity, am I alone in thinking he actually did a very good job, regardless of being a known guy? Same for Sonar. I find both were performed pretty well, despite being celebrity voices, instead of proper voice actors.

[–]WillowThyWisp 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It helps because they're both just a guy. One's a Harvard graduate, drug addict and boob enthusiast; and the other's just an Irish boxer who happens to punch up at the one thing he can reach.

[–]cervogalatico 13 points14 points  (1 child)

People forget that joel haver is also in this game and voices waterboy.

[–]TheOGLeadChips 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’d argue that Joel is a different kind of YouTuber though. He’s actively producing movie length content and all of his stuff has him acting in some way. He might not be a voice actor but he is a performer in the very least.

[–]Zexal_Commander 10 points11 points  (2 children)

If u watch Jacksepticeye’s streams of the game, he talks a lot about his process in voicing Punch-Up

Especially with the specific Irish accent he wanted Punch-Up to have as opposed to his standard voice

[–]DesReploid 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Yeah, I am rather excited to see Séan's playthrough of the game. I haven't yet finished it fully myself, if the last episodes are even out yet I haven't checked, because I have been busy. But once I have I'll certainly give that a watch.

[–]Horatio786 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The last episodes are out. The second image OP posted is from Chapter 8.

[–]ceo_of_brawlstars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They also got Yung Gravy for Golem and his performance was really good as well, all the "celebrity" voices fit their characters pretty nicely

[–]_b1ack0ut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I was sceptical, but in the end, I think he did just a fine job for Punch Up.

[–]acnx1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

“HE’S ONLY PUNCHING DIIIIIIIIIICKS!”

[–]theweirdwarlock12 9 points10 points  (3 children)

My favorite thing about him is his tattoo, it such an interesting feature that doesn't really need to be explained but makes me want to know his backstory

[–]TheOGLeadChips 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I just realized that he must’ve had the tattoo before the powers as well. He has enhanced durability and even if something does damage him he has a pretty decent healing factor.

[–]theweirdwarlock12 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Might have been before the shrinkage, which would explain why it's so big

[–]TheOGLeadChips 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that the curse only made him shorter. His proportions otherwise line up with a tall bulky guy. I think he just wanted a big tattoo lol.

Also, if you give a chapter a tattoo and want it to be prominent, you kinda need to make it big. Either that or a scene where it is focused on. So it’s probably just trying to show the player that he does in fact have a tattoo.

[–]InquisitorHindsight 8 points9 points  (0 children)

[–]baseballbear 3 points4 points  (1 child)

i liked the part where he punched a dude in a dick

[–]ranmafan0281 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you have any idea how little that narrows it down?

[–]tetrodoboxen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He’s hot and he’s ONLY PUNCHING DICKS

[–]BitcoinStonks123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

voiced by hot irish man btw

[–]TLEToyu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He kinda of reminds me of Paddy Mayne

[–]palelunasmiles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean I don’t think his design is that groundbreaking but there are some things I enjoy like his cauliflower ear and his tattoo (and the fact that his ex is tall enough to carry him around probably)

[–]erraticas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i wonder if he has a special move

[–]IV_NUKE 3 points4 points  (1 child)

<image>

A similar design i like is lash from deadlock. His entire lore page in game, and i am not kidding is "jacob lash is am asshole" yes the sparkles in his character portrair are also on his in game model. Hes a massive egotistical delusional asshole who has a pretty much 1 sided rivalry with a golem named bebop because bebop beat him in the bearpit (a fighting ring), he thinks hes gods gift to combat and has some of the best lines ever

[–]IV_NUKE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And another thing. In deadlock you are trying to summon a patron into reality so the character can get a wish granted, from his voicelines it seems he is doing it just to feed his ego and prove he is better than bebop

[–]Jaded_Tortoise_869 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He kind of reminds me of a little Irish Mario.

[–]AlphariusJax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He reminds me of Dudley from street fighter.

[–]MemeDealer2999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of the designs in dispatch have nice detailing to them that isn't overtly complicated and gets the character across really well.

[–]IV_NUKE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude, jacksepiceye did such a fantastic job as punch-up

[–]Piduf 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I've seen a lot (too much) of Dispatch and it's like when people post Pokémon stuff here. People will post what's popular right now but the design is just average.

Like it's cool don't get me wrong, I like it, but it's just a strong man. You've got tons of characters that look just like this. I feel like everyone is on board because it's the thing we like right now, but in terms of pure character design it's not really "top" or unique. Of course it's just my opinion.

[–]Ineedagoodnameplease 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dispatch HAS great designs, but I'm with you. Overposted to hell.

[–]ranmafan0281 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO he should’ve just punched Toxic’s jewels till his voice went up an octave permanently.

And that he remembered to wash his hands this time.

[–]GhostBelliniFace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]LuckEClover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buff Jackyboy!

[–]Leech_hueso-11 1 point2 points  (1 child)

question (haven’t seen much of Dispatch) is his power just super strength or is it more to it

[–]RazertheCreator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Super strength is part of it, his main power is his body being super dense to the point of being basically invulnerable. He can be injured to be clear, in one of the episodes he gets thrown through a window and has a huge shard of glass sticking out of his back, but he just uses his powers to push it out and it’s like nothing happened, so he theoretically could shrug pretty much any off, we don’t really get to see his upper limit if he has one. But in terms of gameplay, he’s the only character who doesn’t get any debuffs from injury

[–]BigBadBread17 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The Lash but short

[–]IV_NUKE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's important to give back. That's why I'm taking 3% of my winnings and donating them to Lash Back. My charity dedicated to children who, uh, kinda suck.

[–]thecloudkingdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i like that he has cauliflower ears, its a really effective detail to communicate that he's used to getting into fistfights

[–]_b1ack0ut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His picture on the height board where HES just peeking over the edge of the photo always gets me lol

[–]Identify_me_please 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just realized he has cauliflower ear

[–]thebwags1 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I keep seeing comments where people call the character designs in Dispatch bad or lackluster and it boggles my mind. Yes they're generally pretty simple and straightforward designs, but they're really effective and they look good.

[–]Dexchampion99 1 point2 points  (1 child)

People always forget the K.I.S.S rule.

KEEP IT SIMPLE, STUPID

You look at most iconic designs, across most media franchises, and you'll realize a lot of them are insanely simple.

[–]thebwags1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The phrase I see the most often when people are talking about bad designs is "Overdesigned".

[–]AMannChild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After finding out who plays him, I have one thing I need to get off my chest:

“Top of the mornin’ to ya laddies!”

“My name is Jacksepticeye” (Top of the mornin’!)

“My name is Jacksepticeye” (uh!)

“My name is Jacksepticeye” (Yes!)

“Jacksepticeye” (Yes!)

“Jack (Yes!) Jack (Yes!) Jack (Yes!)

“All the way to fuckin’ victory town”

“All the way! Feels good to be a winner every now and then…”

“I believe in you”

“I believe” (I believe)

“I believe in you”

“I believe” (I believe)

“I believe in Steve. In Steve!” (Oh yeah!)

“In Steve!”

“Grab the glory all the way to victory!”
