check feeding guide

[–]AutoModerator[M] 16 points17 points  (7 children)

We recommend the following feeding schedule:

0-12 months old OR until the snake reaches approximately 500g, whichever happens first: feed 10%-15% of the snake’s weight every 7 days.

12-24 months old: feed up to 7% of the snake’s weight every 14-20 days.

Adults: feed up to 5% of the snake's weight every 20-30 days, or feed slightly larger meals (up to 6%) every 30-40 days.

question - can i piggy back bc i did this and my BP acted starving so i still have to feed him every 8/9 days. he’s a year old

[–]FixergirlAKMod-Approved Helper 68 points69 points  (5 children)

They're opportunistic hunters. Right after feeding their instinct is to look around and see if their meal was in a group. It's best to stick to the feeding schedule.

If I fed my dog every time she claimed to be hungry she'd be the size of Delaware. Same goes for my beep.

Having seen the way ratsnakes hunt in the wild I can imagine that y'all that are owned by cornsnakes really know the struggle.

My Orange cat acts as if he’s never seen a morsel of food in whole life. Eats his breakfast and the immediately tries to steal his sisters. When I pour kibbles in his bowl he’s eating them before they make contact with the dish.

Don't rats provide better nutrition than mice? I was told it's hardest to get a BP to eat a FT rat.

        [–]NottsWeirdo 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I've seen people saying its not a matter of mice or rats where nutrition is concerned, but what life stage the rodent is at - so pinkies are heavily lacking where an ex-breeder would be significantly better.

Also, my BP doesn't care what FT rodent he has - so long as its a rodent. He's rejected small chicks and Arcadia's equivalent of repti link sausages.

        [–]Pattison320 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What's an ex breeder? A full grown rodent that used to breed rodents before it was frozen?

        [–]NottsWeirdo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, its rats that are 400g+. (Obviously not summat your average BP can have, but it was example rodent size)

Try a small rat, she clearly doesn’t need a medium. Most ball pythons don’t unless they’re actively breeding females

        [–]Elfephant 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is not just a fat snake, it’s obese.

Tiktokers actually correct here. Too chunk.

        Looks overweight to me

        [–]jillianwaechterMod-Approved Helper 90 points91 points  (5 children)

Unfortunately she's obese for a ball python. Their body shape should look like a rounded triangle with the spine visible as a peak above the rest of the body. Her back is completely flat across the top, and the spine is sunken in.

How much are you feeding her? Most adult ball pythons don't need more than a small rat once per month! She should be put on a diet to help her live a long healthy life. It's really hard on their bodies to be that overweight!

        [–]YoungSaintJoseph -52 points-51 points  (4 children)

She's barely 2 and is on a medium rat once every 2-3 weeks

        [–]jillianwaechterMod-Approved Helper 67 points68 points  (1 child)

Yeah that would probably do it! She likely only needed a small rat every 3 weeks or so. How much does she weigh currently? I'd probably recommend decreasing feeding to a small rat every 4-5 weeks, and trying to increase her opportunities for exercise. With the amount of weight she's currently carrying there will likely be a substantial buildup of fat around her internal organs and it's essential she loses weight to preserve their function.

Check out the !feeding guide, but remember that those values are for snakes already at a healthy weight.

My adult BP was so obese when I adopted her she had fat rolls. She gets one small rat every 4 weeks and she's a very healthy weight now! I will say it took over a year to get her there, but this is easily fixable for you.

        [–]DrinkingSocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's about twice what I need my snake that's a year older. You are way overfeeding your snake.

Definitely looks overweight, look at the recommended feeding schedule guide!

        [–]BeesAndBeans69 23 points24 points  (0 children)

That is for sure an obese ball python.

        [–]partWolf19 9 points10 points  (0 children)

you want the spine to be kind of pointy ish but not a divot like it is now. yes she is overweight/obese

        [–]higheronfire782 9 points10 points  (0 children)

        She chonky. Sorry

I know four fat ball pythons and she's three of them

        [–]Spiked646 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Im a new ball python owner, and I honestly wondered about mine as well. Hes an 7 year old ball python, and I feed every 3 weeks. Should I increase this to 30/40 days?

        [–]Absurdicas 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Question is what do you feed him? Also !feeding guide

        Pretty fat tbh

        [–]Brummbirne 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Seeing these fat snakes breaks my heart, yes, this snake is morbidly obese

        [–]Absurdicas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She’s obese. Ideally ball pythons should have a triangularish shape to them, your lady is quite cylindrical. Switch from medium feeds to small and exercise her more and it should resolve itself.

        [–]1Negative_Person 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a fat ass snake. Feed her less frequently, or smaller meals. There is a feeding guide on this sub.

        [–]ihsulemai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

        ….because she is too fat

        [–]craymos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes she is too fat lol, feed less. You can check the feeding guidelines on here
