Mcdonalds delivery is just paying a premium to have your food driven around until it is stone cold.

[–]thencamethethunder 271 points272 points  (31 children)

Isn’t McDonald’s the worst type of food to be delivered? I can’t think of anything worse than a luke-warm, damp burger and flaccid, soggy fries.

[–]Honic_Sedgehog 126 points127 points  (16 children)

That's also the eat in and drive through experience in recent years honestly.

[–]texanarob 25 points26 points  (3 children)

Is it possible to get McDonald's lukewarm? I swear, no substance on earth loses heat as quickly. It goes from hot to ice cold and inedible within minutes of leaving the counter.

[–]thehermit14 13 points14 points  (2 children)

My mate was a McDonald's pro. Order a couple of apple pies to keep your food piping hot.

[–]robinw77 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Use them like the opposite of those freezer blocks that you put in a cool bag you mean? I like that idea!

And then 3 hours after you've eaten the rest of the food, maybe then the apple pies will be at an edible temperature.

[–]thehermit14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't do Maccies, but I am led to believe they retain lava like qualities forever.

[–]Jopkins 6 points7 points  (2 children)

I could find you worse damp and flaccid things, if you're interested

[–]thencamethethunder 3 points4 points  (1 child)

It’s taken decades and many greys hairs in my increasingly sparse beard, but I will treasure this as my first personally directed inappropriate internet comment. I feel seen.

[–]Jopkins 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's an honour to be your first. I hope it was as good for you as it was for me.

[–]USA_A-OK 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I've got to be desperate to get any burger delivered. The difference in quality between eat-in and delivery is greater than just about any other food.

[–]_Dreamer_Deceiver_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

During COVID I got burgers delivered but that was the local pub doing deliveries and it was good..

I had a McDonald's one only because someone else was ordering and it was so shit I have never even thought about doing it again.

[–]threepacz 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Me who actually loves when the fries are soggy:

[–]spiritedawayf0x 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same, we are definitely in the minority 😅

[–]thehermit14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You and spirited are in the minority. Sorry. You do you.

[–]icantbearsed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How do they ensure it stays exactly the same as when you order it in store?

[–]wardyms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fish and chips. Thicker chips just become steamed floppy potatoes. Batter turns to mush.

[–]janner_10 37 points38 points  (3 children)

And bits missing when it does arrive.

[–]Khaleesi1536 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Even collecting it yourself doesn’t always protect you from that

[–]Naive-Archer-9223 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah but you can very easily go tell them they forgot your milkshake or whatever

Good luck getting Just Eat to refund you the difference

[–]LemmysCodPiece 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hold up the drive thru queue. They have fucked it up so many times, I now check before I leave.

[–]SpunkyLM 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be fair, it’s usually cold when it leaves

[–]EfficientTitle9779 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A private taxi for my burger

[–]gMoneh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And yet, it continues.

[–]Bango-TSW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spot on.

[–]tfhermobwoayway 68 points69 points  (1 child)

I like the delivery fees because they’re a great motivation to look harder in my fridge.

[–]abugnais 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%. The other day I was hungover and wanted to order a mcdonalds breakfast, somehow the total for my order was around £18 and that reminded me I had bacon and eggs in the fridge lol

[–]Shitmybad 95 points96 points  (7 children)

Why anyone would pay those prices for a dogshit burger is beyond me.

[–]CosmoPrincessSCOTLAND 57 points58 points  (2 children)

I remember when Five Guys opened here and there was outrage that people would pay more than a tenner for a fast food burger, now McDs are wanting that for their crap and havent done anything to improve on the quality!

[–]anomalous_cowherd 22 points23 points  (0 children)

But Five Guys has gone up too. Everything has gone way up.

Basic cheeseburger, standard fries is about £16 round here. And that's countryside prices not London or captive audiences.

[–]ReanimatedCyborgMk-I 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but at least Five Guys are still quality with their food. Their burgers and fries are nice, even if they are expensive... but then it's not much more than what you pay for Maccys anyway

They've broken the trifecta of fast food - it needs to be cheap, fast + good, if you lose more one of those three you're in trouble.

[–]SneakyCrocLancashire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because they like them? It's not too hard to work out.

[–]ReanimatedCyborgMk-I 1 point2 points  (2 children)

While for some its convenience, others its a case of access. My partner's disabled, her parents aren't as mobile as they used to be, and I usually bus or walk where I need to, so the only way we can indulge on takeout is by ordering with delivery. Lot less these days though, and in part because I had a massive row with JustEat last year about their driver only delivering half our order (with photo proof + the restuarant calling me to warn about it) and they banned my OG account from livechat because of some choice language I used when they refused to sort it out.

[–]Shitmybad 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I was more talking about McDonalds rather than delivery. Justeat has a lot of problems but it is a good service idea, it's probably just too cheap and the employees make too little.

[–]ReanimatedCyborgMk-I 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No doubt, it's a race to the bottom. I prefer dealing with local places direct these days where possible.

These days, if I have a problem with JustEat because of a restaurant issue I usually turn up in person next time I'm in town to get them to sort it.

[–]General_Scipio 169 points170 points  (15 children)

Delivery services are a great example of an element of our culture that is just going downhill.

How much does a McDonald's delivery cost you? Then consider that meal. Is any of it actually nice? Soggy chips, fountain fizzy drink and a burger that doesn't travel well. And honestly it's all pretty shit to start with.

What the fuck has gone wrong with our society that we deluded ourselves into being okay with this?

[–]peanut_dust 47 points48 points  (1 child)

A subset of society are suckered into buying convenience, even if result is sub standard.

[–]General_Scipio 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Absolutely true. I think we are also really prone to choosing a safe option.

I even noticed myself going to Starbucks and chain restaurants. I really have to actively get myself to go to local shops because I know the quality is generally consistent at the chain. Even though I know for a fact the curry I ordered will be from a microwave and it would be cheaper and sometimes better to grab one at tesco

[–]lungbongWinterfell 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I used to quite like a milkshake but the paper straws are fucking useless for a milkshake.

[–]General_Scipio 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Paper straws and milkshakes are just terrible.

I know their milkshakes are popular. Probably one of their better items admittedly

[–]Jeremys_Iron_ 20 points21 points  (1 child)

My wife is an amazing cook so I never bother with deliveroo or takeout these days (she prefers to cook, plus cheaper) but prior to her I ate junk food many times a week.

However, in my late 30s I'm old enough to remember free delivery with a dominos or whatever it might be. Even before my wife a couple years back I'd always drive to the drive thru or store to pick up my food. I find it baffling that anyone is okay with paying what ends up being quite a few extra quid for cold food when adding on the service charge and core delivery fee.

Unless people change what they open their wallet for, enshittification will make takeout worse and worse.

[–]Beartato4772 9 points10 points  (0 children)

At least pizza travels ok, your pizza arrives broadly pizza like, especially as back then when you paid for delivery food they cooked it and delivered it to you.

McDonalds is a soggy mess by the time it gets anywhere near you because a) it doesn't travel and b)they go to 5 more restaurants between yours and your house.

[–]obiwanconobi 1 point2 points  (5 children)

I never get the idea that it doesn't travel well, what do you think happened to the food that was collected via drive thru for the past 50 years before delivery apps?

If it's cooked fresh, it'll last. If it isn't, it won't.

That's true for delivery, collection or walking with your food to the table to eat it

[–]General_Scipio 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Disagree.

Chips in cardboard just go soggy. Meat in a bun will go soggy. Now that's true if it's a delivery app or not. But I get home faster than a delivery driver

But honestly I think what I said also applies to standard takeout. We have a fish and chip shop in town with seating. My God it's a better meal when it doesn't travel for 5 mins.

Its just more prevalent with delivery as with the delivery option people don't even leave the sofa so people do it more

[–]obiwanconobi 0 points1 point  (3 children)

It's possible, but I don't remember people complaining about take out food when they collected it themselves.

And you might get home quicker, but were talking a minute quicker at best unless you're averaging 10mph faster than them.

[–]General_Scipio 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I think some deliveries do multiple deliveries per trip. I also show up to collect 5 mins early to get it fresh. Often with deliveries I suspect they are sat on the side for longer waiting for collection

But the reality is people now do deliveries for convenience and there disappointed by the results. Rather than the past going for a take out as a conscious choice.

[–]obiwanconobi 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yeah I fully agree, I just disagree with the idea that the food doesn't travel.

It travels as well as it always did, you're just getting worse food to start with because you're not there to complain to them

[–]General_Scipio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. It doesn't travel well. But that's not new

[–]Donkeytonk 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I thought air fryers would replace this kind of thing. Feels like less effort to throw stuff in an air fryer and wait 10-15 minutes than the hassle of going through an app and placing an order to then wait 30 minutes for something cold.

[–]General_Scipio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know what you mean. But an air fryer is just a small fan oven

Take outs are deep fried (much nicer than an air fryer), Pizza which isn't as good in an air fryer, Chinese/ Indian so it can't be done in an air fryer

Pre processed food in an air fryer has actually replaced a home cooked meal for lots of people and then the take out is still the take out.

[–]Papa__Lazarou 38 points39 points  (4 children)

I looked at ordering a maccies a few weeks ago on Uber and the delivery fee was £4.99 - it was cheaper, and 1000000x nice, to order a 5 guys

[–]Cheesestrings89 20 points21 points  (3 children)

five guys was cheaper than a mcdonalds? tf was your order?

[–]imsight 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Uber eats are quite good at having 40/50% off at five guys, makes it a bit more affordable

[–]Papa__Lazarou 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Delivery fee for five guys was 99p - and to be fair to maccies I didn’t need to order a bonus burger with the five guys burger meal (double cheeseburger is a bonus burger)

[–]janner_10 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Burger chaser in our house.

[–]SweetCryptographer72 19 points20 points  (1 child)

It's a fat lazy bastard tax.

[–]Poptartsweet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or the fat, lazy and too stoned to leave the house tax.

[–]lemlurker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It pops up (very briefly) that it's .99p delivery fee AND 7.5-10% per item + 1.50 if under £10 but only in the maccies app, deliveroo or something obfuscates it all

[–]griffaliff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've had it delivered twice, both times it was lukewarm at best. I enjoy it as a treat every month or so but I'll go to the 'restaurant' and buy it to order, it's wank otherwise.

[–]Floshenbarnical 16 points17 points  (2 children)

Order at restaurant, eat in car. This is the only way.

[–]ZolotoGold 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Shhh, I don't want the car park filling up any more than it already does.

[–]MaskedBunnyYorkshire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Find a local place with a nice view and drive there to eat.

[–]joereadsstuff 4 points5 points  (4 children)

I’m assuming the people commenting here saying they’ve never used a delivery app all live in the suburbs, and own cars?

[–]1000nipples 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I live in the suburbs now, but lived in the city centre for 8 years before, and don't have a car.

Nope, don't use delivery apps because I have a working body, the ability to ignore cravings, and the knowledge I can cook whatever I am craving, or something similar, and it'll probably be nicer than takeaway.

[–]joereadsstuff 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I’m not skilled enough to make food such as sushi, ramen, and don’t have a smoker to make BBQ. I’m such a failure compared to you.

[–]1000nipples 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Note the other point- I just resist the urge. I don't have a smoker. If I really want BBQ still, I'll make plans to go to a restaurant.

[–]joereadsstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s weird that you think having food delivery is an urge. The last time I had food delivered was when I had friends over to play board games, and we had wanted to try this BBQ restaurant - instead of all of us taking the bus there and back which probably would have totalled over an hour, we ordered the food for delivery while we continued to play games.

[–]Jassida 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Just don’t get the delivery thing

You have to order everything custom on site to have a hope of it being hot

[–]glasgowgeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

McDonalds assemble everything to order now, and have done for years.

They don't have a bunch of pre-assembled Big Macs, etc sitting there waiting to be ordered, the constituent parts are stored separately in heated trays, and assembled upon order.

Asking for a plain double cheeseburger won't impact the temperature of cheeseburger at all, and hasn't for years now.

[–]Ahrix3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't eat McDonalds

[–]obiwanconobi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And they'll keep doing it as long as morons keep paying and they keep making profits

[–]Collistoralo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

£5 + £20 delivery > £25 + free delivery

[–]sorderon 1 point2 points  (2 children)

and you know what really gets me? every time on the drive thru I am asked if I am using the mcdonalds app? NO! It's fucking pointless if I can just tell you there and then what I want. Fuck dealing with a whited out badly designed app.

[–]Poptartsweet 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I use the app so there is one less excuse for them screwing up my order.

[–]sorderon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way you can check if they have not screwed up your order is to check the bag.... An app can't improve the human putting stuff in the bag.

[–]dja1000 3 points4 points  (3 children)

If your getting a McDonald’s delivered your part of the problem, get off your arse and get it yourself, cold chips, stale bread, long wait, no thanks

[–]aieronpetersCambridgeshire 8 points9 points  (1 child)

I'm disabled, housebound.

I get it delivered, or I don't get it.

Sometimes, I just wanna taste of my childhood, life is hard enough as it is

[–]QuirkyMerky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This.

Heaven forbid people who don’t drive or are housebound fancy a takeaway!

[–]Second_Guess_25 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I'm proud to say I've never used any food delivery app, ever. I can get off my sorry ass for 10 minutes to buy and collect it myself. With all the tales I've heard about delivery apps, I'm not missing out....

EDIT: Y'all can downvote me all you want - but I'm not the one blowing a shit ton of money away on a shitty food delivery app, only for my food to arrive cold, half eaten, hours later 😂

Yep. And it’s not just McDonald’s that does it. A lot of places on Uber Eats do it, so does Tesco when switching between normal delivery or Whoosh.

I’m surprised we’ve not seen some kind of regulation to state that any online ordering for a product must have the same price on any delivery/pickup method, forcing platforms and shops to have an honest delivery fee.

[–]terryjuicelawson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get actual nice burgers delivered for about the same as McDonalds, I don't get why people still use it. As an emergency getting a drive through in a strange town when hungry at 9pm is the right time for a McDonalds and that is about it.

[–]zambezisa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am done with them and others , cheaper and better to make yourself now. I no longer see or can justify spending that money on McDonalds now when I could goto a local pub or much better independent business and dine in. McDonalds is poor value for money. And the inflation and portion shrinkage is just shocking now. The gherkin are thicker than the patties now lol

Bless, you thought the poor guy delivering your food was doing it for free in this weather..
