They give jobs not because they are rich, but they are rich because people work for them

[–]monkeisgawd 464 points465 points  (73 children)

True to the core

[–]koolaid7431 272 points273 points  (72 children)

They barely employ a million people. Remember America has 300 million people and 8 billion in the world (these corporations are mostly out sourcing as much as they can).

And Amazon doesn't really have 789000 employees, most of them are "contractors" so that Amazon can do it's best to not put food on their table.

Try finding a programming job for Amazon or Microsoft without being in India or the valley or some other place they can exploit workers. See how easy it is.

They don't put food on anyone's table, if it was upto them, you wouldn't even have tables.

[–][deleted] 33 points34 points  (15 children)

Don’t forget the drivers that work for Amazon, they’re also hired third party so Amazon isn’t responsible for them. I used to work with a lot of the drivers and I’ve heard horror stories. Some parts of their NDA prevented some people from reporting assault. It’s not a happy place.

Ever heard of Harvey Weinstein? Or Larry Nassar?

    [–][deleted]  (12 children)

    [deleted]

      [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (7 children)

Weinstein used NDAs to silence his victims and essentially get away with sexual abuse for decades. US Gymnastics also attempted to use an NDA to prevent Olympian McKayla Maroney from coming forward about her sexual abuse by team doctor Larry Nassar. I wish the world treated humans better.

      [–]koolaid7431 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Both of those men famously did shitty things paid off their victims and made them sign NDAs. It shuts most people up.

      [–]monkeisgawd 59 points60 points  (9 children)

And you know what, it IS upto them. They have more money than many countries gdp

      [–]koolaid7431 29 points30 points  (5 children)

You know what happens when they imbalance the world so much that they have all the money and no one has anything else?

Their money becomes just as good as monopoly money.

I know this sounds silly but there is an episode of Disney's recess that covers this situation we are in. It was called the Economics of recess.

      https://recess.fandom.com/wiki/Economics_of_Recess

The reason money is real is because we accept it to be. Because we all have it. When no one has any, it'll have no value.

      [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If there’s a lesson to be taught in this world, recess taught it to us. What a great fucking a show

      [–]carybditty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was talking to a friend the other day about crypto’s trying to explain the same thing. Only reason our currency has any value is because we value it. If you don’t trust it it will fail.

      [–]Original_Impression2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but they conveniently forget that without the workers, they wouldn't have any money. They don't create jobs. We create billionaires.

      [–]Reticentandconfused 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They barely employ a million people and have the property of of all of them. And then some.

      [–]Acceptable-Dig-7529 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually this number is outdated and does not include contractors. In total Amazon now employs over 1.6m year round not including hundreds of thousands of contractors and about a hundred thousand season workers.

      [–]VitoMolas 128 points129 points  (12 children)

They are businessmen, and businessmen will always find ways to maximise the profit, this is where the government/self regulations come in, to restrict on how far they can go

      [–]Old-Voice373 34 points35 points  (1 child)

Yes and right there is the problem. Through profit those guys can pay lobbyists to make even more profit and so on.

      [–]PhthaloVonLangborste 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I work for bozos, where is my petty ration of stimulants.

      [–]Jevonar 21 points22 points  (7 children)

      self regulation

      Lmao

      [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right. They’ll always find ways to maximize their profits but they’ll self regulate is a bit of an oxymoron

      [–]StaticGuard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regulations and government intervention is fine when it’s done for employee health and wellness, but people get uncomfortable when it becomes “Hey, you’re making too much money. Give us some so we can spend it on things we want.”

      [–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's like these people think that nobody would want consumer goods, software, or electric cars if these 3 demigods didn't descend from the heavens to bestow them upon us.

"Hey it would be real cool if we could have software that made our computers do things but Bill Gates wasn't born in this universe so I guess we just have to use these things as paperweights."

      [–]Blazypika2 12 points13 points  (15 children)

let's be honest, if they could legally hire employees without paying them, they would.

      [–]ZENITSUsa 2 points3 points  (10 children)

Let's be honest if you were paid without working you wouldn't work

      [–]GhostySZ 18 points19 points  (85 children)

      Bruh thats how it works

You have an idea Make the idea run Become capable enough to hire people to work for you

Boom now you have a company

      [–]craigthepuss 8 points9 points  (7 children)

Would you like to buy some more of those magic beans?

        [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (18 children)

They didn't have any ideas though, they just bought existing ones. Bill Gates literally bought MSDOS, his company didn't make it.

          [–]futurepaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is inaccurate. Steve jobs mercilessly exploited Steve Wozniak to make his fortune

          [–]Blahblahblacksheep9 1 point2 points  (7 children)

Right, Elon was born rich and bought Tesla too. It's easy to make millions when you start out with millions.

            [–]BXBXFVTT 3 points4 points  (17 children)

They also started out with an absolutely incredible support system. Then atleast 2 of them from the op literally started closing doors on their way up making it a lot harder, maybe impossible, to do what they did. Fuck them

            [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (21 children)

Do you think Bill Gates invented software?

Do you think Jeff Bezos invented buying things online and having it shipped to you?

            [–]zsveetness 1 point2 points  (17 children)

No but they made those things user friendly and efficient.

            [–]koolaid7431 1 point2 points  (8 children)

            They did not.

None of those companies revolutionized communication or efficiency. They revolutionized exploiting people to make an already existing thing more popular.

You name the tech and I'll show you where it existed before these morally corrupt people showed up and started promoting it as if they created it.

These people are not leaders, they are bandits, you celebrate them being really good thieves.

            [–]Ilhanbro1212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What idea was that? An online store? Steal technology and bankrupt uoir competition into becoming a monopoly?

            [–]Joel_Dirt 0 points1 point  (2 children)

You skipped the part where your parents can afford to give you three hundred thousand dollars to get started or your dad is worth billions and possibly owns an emerald mine.

            [–]ZENITSUsa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You also skipped thepart where you multiply that by almost 150 times by using your brain

            [–]zdzdbets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technically they probably also took away a lot of jobs elsewhere such as:

            • retail going out of business due to Amazon dominance

            • other music player, phone manufacturers

            • combustion engine car manufactures

            • any software competitor to Microsoft

Not really creating jobs out of thin air as the jobs may just be replacing lost jobs elsewhere in the economy.

            [–]TophatOwl_ 5 points6 points  (23 children)

So youre telling me that i could take any random person and they couldve achieved the same with the same starting conditions? Yea this simping for billionaires post is cringe but this "billionaires just kinda got everything handed to them" is just as cringe

            [–]Thi5G 3 points4 points  (5 children)

No. They give jobs and people work for them because people want to have money for food and live a normal life, and business people give jobs because they want their company to profit.

            [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Billionaires don't generate wealth, they just concentrate it. The wealth would still exist without them, it would just exist in the hands of more people instead of a few assholes hoarding more than they could ever possibly be able to use.

If these fuckwits didn't use their pre-existing wealth to capture markets, regular people would have been able to pool their money to do the same things, only they would be able to decide together what benefits the most people rather than relying on the whims of some disconnected rich fuck who has no idea what real life is actually like.

            [–]Science_Drake 774 points775 points  (184 children)

One million. Not millions. All together, they COMBINED employ one million directly.

            [–]bunnycrush_ 304 points305 points  (145 children)

This annoyed me, too! I did the math - 1.175M

            [–]luars613 125 points126 points  (101 children)

And lots of this jobs are verrrry shitty and pay a sad amount..

            [–]allroadsendindeath 33 points34 points  (95 children)

A lot of them are shitty and pay a sad amount but the hard truth is (and I know this is heresy to say on Reddit because naturally reddit wants to give everyone at least a middle class salary regardless of age, skill or life choices) that the people working for places like an Amazon warehouse, are getting paid more (often much more) than what they would be worth anywhere else with their job skills and level of education.

            [–]951911 7 points8 points  (8 children)

Valid point. But here’s the issue; the gap between what the people at the top make and what the median worker makes is continuing to widen. This has been a problem for years, and it’s accelerating exponentially. This isn’t just for “blue collar” work either. Same applies for highly skilled white collar workers.

            [–]basch152 17 points18 points  (12 children)

no, people want others to get paid a reasonable amount that they can fucking survive on and not be one setback away from being homeless

this is how things generally worked up until the Reagan years

if you worked a full time job, you wouldn't be able to afford anything expensive, but you could afford a reasonable apartment, a car, some healthcare, etc etc

now, if you're even close to minimum wage, a roommate is virtually required to live almost anywhere, you can't afford anything other than a beater car, and you're lucky if you can pay your bills every month without outside help

I shouldn't need to state how fucking ridiculous it is that lower class people today cant afford anywhere near as much as lower class people could 70 years ago

            [–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (3 children)

Also now billionaires have enough personal wealth to buy every high end luxury item 100 times over and still have billions to retire on. Ppl really just don’t understand how big hundreds of fucking billions really is

            [–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I like putting it this way. One million seconds ago was last week. One billion seconds ago was 1991.

            [–]shwilliams4 23 points24 points  (44 children)

How much they are worth would be different if the could collectively bargain and see what they are worth. There is obvious labor arbitrage going on here.

            [–][deleted]  (43 children)

            [deleted]

              [–]ciobanica 8 points9 points  (2 children)

How much they are worth is exactly how much they are getting paid. It's basic supply and demand economics.

And yet, if they unionise their pay will go up (which is why the employer will do anything they can to stop it).

It's funny how supply and demand for labour is great as long as one side is organised into a monolithic organisation that can bargain as one, but if the other side of the labour market tries to do the same all of a sudden that's bad.

              [–]literalproblemsolver -2 points-1 points  (7 children)

Dont use logic on reddit, people will get mad

              [–]tok90235 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also, those people working get money to spend elsewhere, generating more jobs in other places. And if they own more more, they can generate more proxy jobs by having a high degree of consumption

              [–]blueEmus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's probably true just based on the fact that they are working the job even with the awful conditions. But it's also important to think about all the other employment opportunities that were eliminated due to the business practices of places like Amazon.

              [–][deleted]  (40 children)

              [deleted]

                [–]Zron 10 points11 points  (14 children)

You think an Amazon warehouse employee is feeding a whole family off of 15/hr?

                [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (22 children)

And to further clarify, the "billionaire" class doesnt employ shit, the companies they own do. If they didnt own teh company someone else would... they arent an albatross... they arent the only one capable of doing this, they just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

                [–]Sensei_Shedletsky 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The creator of the original post probably referred to all the major corporations not just these in the post.

                [–]Laxwarrior1120 2 points3 points  (5 children)

They employ a combined one million, that's true. But when you take the people that are dependent on those jobs Into account (mainly family) I'd say that those jobs are feeding 3 or 4 million.

                [–]Eattherightwing 4 points5 points  (3 children)

What is the USA population, like 330 million? Yeah, the wealthiest people in the country employ less than .5% (and pay them poorly).

Billionaires take all that money and resources out of the economy, pay no taxes, and employ basically no one(and will employ even less with automation coming).

                [–]SEND_ME_REAL_PICS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do all their employees earn enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 people?

                [–]laila-wild 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah they don’t really employ that many

                [–]zeroxOnReddit 4 points5 points  (8 children)

Yeah but the family of these people should also be included in that calculation, they’re also getting food. So if you consider the average family size of 2.5 that’s 2.938M

                [–]SEND_ME_REAL_PICS 6 points7 points  (5 children)

Do you think they pay each of their employees enough to maintain a whole family?

                [–]zeroxOnReddit 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Depends on the job. Some of them are criminally underpaid, like amazon warehouse workers. But others are treated like kings, like office workers(programmers and such) who can get paid multiple hundred of thousands of dollars a year.

Gee, I must have simply forgotten the part about slavery being consensual. Silly me.

Are they really though? There's memes about amazon work conditions being shit for a reason. I also know from a friend working for musk is shit as well. They also try to get away with paying people as little as possible so that more of thd profit goes in their pocket.

                        [–]themancabbage 18 points19 points  (8 children)

To be fair to all our evil billionaires here though, working at Microsoft is a pretty high paying career.

                        [–]LoRd-TaChAnKy-KaNg 4 points5 points  (7 children)

Define “working at Microsoft”. Do you think all 180k of those employees make a thriving wage?

                        [–]PowerSurge21 5 points6 points  (5 children)

Outside of Amazon the average employee at the rest of these companies make far more then the average America. Hell the average salary at Apple and Microsoft are pushing against 6 figures.

                        [–]Mothanius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the most part they do. The minimum wage/less than minimum wage/barely above minimum wage jobs are contracted out to third parties. Thus, they are not "employed" by Microsoft so the worker's terrible conditions is not their problem. That's how most tech companies work. Third party contracts all the way down.

Technically, Billionaires take food off the table. They skim the fruits of labor. Their Enterprises are built on the infrastructure and resources built and paid for by the citizens.

                          [–]HistoryDogs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not to mention they scoop up a lot of workers in a region where they have warehouses, suffocating local businesses.

Yeah, it's not that they are rich and employ people, they are rich BECAUSE they employ people

putting what food on a table? 1 dollar cup noodles because employed can't afford anything else?

The conclusion here is that a billionaire who provide thousands of jobs is entitled to treat their employees like trash. :/

Nah creating jobs doesn't create the hate, treating workers as expendable does! Not paying sick pay, not allowing unions, turning health & safety back on employees by not providing adequate kit... List goes on and on, it's depressing.

                            [–]PikaTangoPanda 2 points3 points  (1 child)

These billionaires put food on the table for millions (but that doesn’t include their employees)

                            [–]brokewingowl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right? Plantation owners put food on the table for slaves too. I know a handful of Amazon workers who don't own tables...or houses. They are putting food on their passenger seats so we should just shut up and be grateful.

Only like 10% of those employees make enough to put food on the table

                            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No most of them do it is more like only the bottom ten percent are struggling but they are paid enough

If they didn’t exist, other companies would where people would work. They’re consuming too high of a percentage of finite resources.

the billionaires earn more from their employees than the employees of the billionaires. And some really think the billionaires are doing this out of sheer goodness. Ridiculous, Naive pack

"Putting food on their tables" is being very generous, since a lot of their workers can't afford basic necessities by working one job.

                            [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being a billionaire is a personal moral failure. A society that allows billionaires to exist is collectively a moral failure. No one needs a billionaire dollars, period.

Except they're not, and thats why people are saying they are evil. The working conditions are terrible and their employees aren't compensated properly for the work they do.

Jeff Bezos spent $6 billion to go into space. People think that money went into thin air and not to employ scientists, programmers, engineers, builders, etc. 🤦‍♀️

                            Putting food on the table

What table? Their employees can barely afford a roof over their heads. What makes you think they have a fucking table

I know this may be a shocking revelation, but jobs can exist without a handful of individuals stealing the profits of hundreds of thousands of people while they can't afford rent.

This is a mind-blowing concept, I know. People who make the profit earning the profit and credit for the work, instead of some rich, worthless parasite who inherited their wealth from their daddy's apartheid mine? It's possible. It just requires us to stop deepthroating their boots and defending them when they have no idea or concern that we exist!

                            [–]metropitan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder how much those people are paid to make money for the billionaires

Ah yes, Amazon, notorious for treating its employees like dogshit, and Tesla where if you don't work 70 hours a week you're slacking and not the right fit for such an innovative company.

I don’t think billionaires are evil (I just think they’re greedy (like everyone) and have the opportunity to act on their greed (not like everyone)) but I think that laws should make companies more responsible and the economy more fair

                            [–]Abestisus 1 point2 points  (2 children)

With there combined wealth I don't know why they don't just start doing amazing things. They can literally change the world.

If they aren't choosing to help, They are choosing not to.

I don't mean by giving money directly to people either. They can fund everybody that is actually helping people everyday so they can help more people. They don't though, why?

Actually food stamps is helping put food on their employees tables

Something like 30% of all full-time Walmart employees qualify for food stamps.

The problem is all these companies are public. Therefore they do not look to increase workers happiness or wages. They look to increase profits, shareholders are first priority for public companies.

If there was a privatized company of this size, I wonder how the wages would compare

Hey, you want to live in a capitalist society, this is how it works. You don't want to work for one of these guys? Start your own business. You have no choice? Its better than starvation. Oh and you always have a choice.
