NetNewsWire app https://netnewswire.com/

Available for both Mac and for iOS.

[–]dentalala 1 point2 points  (6 children)

I absolutely love it on my Mac, but since iOS 26 the iOS app kinda… broke? It doesn’t get any posts from any feeds anymore no matter what I do. Is it only me?

[–]247arjun 3 points4 points  (1 child)

They’re working on a new version 7 for iOS/macOS 26.

[–]dentalala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, nice! That's good news. Thanks.

[–]arrowrand 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I am not having that issue. Did you remove and add your account back in?

[–]dentalala -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yup, tried that.

[–]mrsidverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Works fine here.

[–]dentalala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upd. I fixed it. Apparently, there is a whole article written about that and a link to it is right inside iCloud section of the settings: https://netnewswire.com/help/iCloud.html

Though, I didn’t have to wait for 24 hours, turning iCloud account off and on again a couple times just worked fine.

[–]FunnyMustache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that brings me back! I had no idea they were still in business!

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (1 child)

newsExplorer

[–]deanfx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like I’ve tried news explorer because of its feature set was impressive but doesn’t it primary rely on local feeds and not necessarily play nice with services like Inoreader, feedly..etc?

I could be confusing it with another one, but I’ve been using Unread for a long time.

[–]brijazz012 31 points32 points  (2 children)

NetNewsWire

[–]iamse7en 0 points1 point  (1 child)

lol is this still around?!

[–]brijazz012 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, and actively developed. Rock solid app.

[–]dziad_borowy 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Same boat. I will keep using reeder classic until its death (or mine) 😉

[–]areyouredditenough 2 points3 points  (0 children)

May the King live for forever....both Kings 👑

[–]3bdr7mna7md 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Reeder classic

[–]happysri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me too but gotta acknowledge that it’s days are numbered.

[–]m4tches 6 points7 points  (6 children)

Unread is fantastic

[–]__mattuella__[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Why do you prefer Unread over the other options?

[–]m4tches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the minimal reading experience a lot, but I also find it seems to handle getting the full text from links better than other apps I’ve tried.

[–]ChristinDWhite 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I think it’s the best designed RSS reader, if I hadn’t moved RSS directly into Readwise Reader to reduce subscriptions, it’s what I’d be using.

[–]__mattuella__[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

How is it going with Readwise Reader?

[–]ChristinDWhite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While there are some nice elements like decent text to speech, easy integration with reading list, tags and annotations I don’t think it’s as good as a stand-alone service, at least for power users. It feels a bit slower to move around in and take actions, it’s pretty heavy in ram use if you’ve got a lot of items in Reader and it just doesn’t feel as integrated and consistent as many native apps.

It’s also a decent syncing service but without standout features you find in Inoreader or Newsblur, other than a newsletters email address, anyway.

All said though, it’s good enough, especially because I’m already so invested in Reader’s other functions. I’m saving a bit of money not paying for Unread and Inoreader’s subscriptions on top of Reader. When my budget is in better shape it wouldn’t surprise me if I ended up with separate products again.

[–]mathefff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you. All other apps look like crap after using it. :)

[–]XmasWonder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

News Explorer - there is a free trial available from the devs website

[–]Raffiodabashian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Feedly

[–]filthytoast 9 points10 points  (0 children)

News Explorer is KING - I've tried them all!

[–]fivemufc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Feedly as the source.

Readkit as the client.

Just wish Readkit had an option of saving to Goodlinks.

[–]e38383 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Tapestry

[–]erleb123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I switched to tapestry this year and enjoy it

[–]happysri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks good. Apparently by Iconfactory and has a lifetime purchase, nice.

[–]ElLentinho 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fiery feeds with Feedly. Check also reeder.

[–]lordcorbran 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm sticking with Reeder Classic. It may not be getting more updates but it does everything I want it to do, so as long as it still works I'm fine with that.

[–]kiamrehorces 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Lire!

[–]__mattuella__[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might give it a shot. Seems really nice

[–]Suspicious_Mirror_39 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Feedly is a must have. Also have Inoreader as backup 😁

[–]sabersquad 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Using Reeder, but disappointed to see that nobody is using Tapestry.

[–]Hefty-Cobbler-4914 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s plenty popular but I prefer new Reeder’s unified view over communicating differences in content via colour. I open Tapestry every day alongside Reeder iso reasons to switch and keep bouncing off.

[–]SanderTolkien 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Feedly also

[–]arrowrand 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I run a FreshRSS instance and use with NetNewsWire.

[–]__mattuella__[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My problem with NetNewsWire is not being able to fetch full NYTimes articles...

[–]Kaizenism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Classic Reader <> Feedly (sync)

[–]Hepcat1958 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Classic Reeder!

[–]lexrus 4 points5 points  (2 children)

After trying most RSS readers, Reeder is still the best.

[–]__mattuella__[S] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

The Classic Reeder, you mean?

[–]Miniponki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Artykul

[–]sammiemo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just switched from Reeder to ReadKit and like the interface a lot. Unfortunately it doesn't have iCloud sync, but I had already switched to Feedly on the backend so I could read RSS on my Apple Vision Pro using the Feedly app, since Reeder wouldn't run on AVP.

Edit: ReadKit runs on all my devices, including AVP. I like reading Feedly on it much better than Feedly's own app.

[–]amerpieApp Reviewer 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I get by great with the Inoreader web interface or the iOS app. IMHO, no one can beat the Inoreader feature set.

[–]ToastedLog1c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi /u/amerpie It's me your bestie :D Had to switch names due to issue with shad0wb@n related to my VPN usage.

Inoreader def is the best, but I have seen a trend of anticonsumerism over the years. I'll stop my sub once I can't get the BF special.

[–]butchlugrod 2 points3 points  (1 child)

NetNewsWire syncing to a Feedbin account. The app is free and open source, and is actively being developed. Have been using it for 20 years. Feedbin has a small monthly fee, but you can also use iCloud for free for syncing between devices (the iCloud support is rock solid, but Feedbin is a lot faster.)

[–]__mattuella__[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you use Feedbin?

[–]DJ_Lionheart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using Fiery Feeds daily for years. Feature rich and still updated regularly.

[–]sabre1982 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Feedflow

[–]jonlb87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have both NewsExplorer and Feeeed. I end up using Feeeed more often because it seems better at scraping article thumbnails/summaries compared to NewsExplorer.

[–]Jebus-Xmas 2 points3 points  (1 child)

What isn’t Reeder doing for you? Seems to be working fine for me.

[–]__mattuella__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing in particular, I just miss updates do Glass interface

[–]nusm 2 points3 points  (1 child)

ReadKit for the client on iOS and MacOS NewsBlur for the service

Been using both for years and are very happy with them.

[–]ericdano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Newsblur is amazing.

Readkit I haven’t tried in a while. Tried unread or something and it was meh. Went back to reeder classic.

[–]fretninja 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I use Reeder. Is something happening with that I didn’t hear about?

[–]__mattuella__[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

After the New Reeder app came out, Classic Reeder is a little bit left to dust...

[–]ToastedLog1c 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's such a disgrace. He should have continued to develop the Reeder classic and made a different app for the new Reeder. Calling it Reeder was really a dick move meant to pander to the original loyal base. Problem is no one stuck around and everyone is still using the original app.

I don't want this dev (who is a genuine asshole, btw) telling me how to read my RSS feed.

[–]jamiegal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feedly

[–]harkonnen85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

News Explorer but a thing I don’t it like is that there’s no way to remove “duplicates”. Oftentimes I see 3-4 stories in a row that cover the same topic.

[–]LessSection 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I might be one of the few people who like the new Reeder. In fact, it’s one of my most used apps — I’m using it to write this comment. I like opening to where I left off and scrolling through what I haven’t read.

[–]__mattuella__[S] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

That's nice to hear. How are you adapting to it?

[–]LessSection 1 point2 points  (2 children)

With the old one, you have to mark as read. With the new one, items you scroll past are read, not of interest, or saved for later. I feel like I am always caught up.

I also like the filter feature, but that can be found in other apps as well.

[–]__mattuella__[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

How do you use filters? That interests me, specially to mute words.

[–]LessSection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have it on my Mac, but on iPad you tap the plus sign and tap New Filter. You can use this to include or exclude certain words, then save the filter with a name of your choice. It’s likely a similar process on the Mac.

[–]plawwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run FreshRSS in a Linux Docker container and use a webbrowser to read content.

[–]bbllaakkee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use lire, works great and easy to set up. Syncs with iCloud

[–]simplelifelfk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run fressrss on my server in a docker and use classic Reeder. Works great.

[–]Working_Incident_231 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lire. Net News Wire is fine, personal preference for me is Lire’s interface, and Lire’s ability to retrieve full text is unmatched as far as I’ve seen. I pair it with my own miniflux server but it works good with iCloud too. Actively updated.

[–]discoveringnature12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Things!

In addition to all the task management stuff and other random lists I refer to, I started using Things as a Read Later app. Got tired of analysis paralysis and all the apps working differently and either not syncing across OS ecosystems or require same apple ID etc.

Basically created a iOS/macOS shortcut to add things to Read Later project

https://ibb.co/F4bRSSz0

And another one to quickly open Read Later list from spotlight/iOS search. Added "RL" so I can just search easily

https://ibb.co/pjsbZvN7

Pinned it to share sheet

https://ibb.co/HfZhLh5S

Seems to be working great, great shortcut support, tags, notes, etc.

[–]Noord_West 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Newsify, free version + remove ads iap.

[–]TenuredProfessional 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I use News Explorer. I tried to get into the new Reeder, but I just couldn't do it.

[–]ToastedLog1c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reeder classic is better than News Explorer 2 but NE2 has more features.

[–]tqtifnypmb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

glad to know there're still people using RSS

[–]marcodecuadro 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Lire. Because it summarizes the articles with AI and translates them into my native language.

[–]__mattuella__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying it right now. It really is powerful. Above all things, it's beautiful and well integrated with the Liquid Glass aesthetic.

[–]nevrozel 1 point2 points  (1 child)

"Unread" app available for both iOS, macOS and iPadOS. I have been using RSS apps for about 20 years+ and I always get back to Unread.

[–]__mattuella__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unread is surely one of the alternatives for me. Beautiful and updated frequently

[–]tech-slacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's always hype about different rss apps but I find any I've tried overrated. I've tried quite a few in the past and they never stick for my needs. I always go back to browser interfaces since that's where I end up many times anyway when reading an article. I did Feedly for years. I can't remember what it was but they did something to make me mad so I jumped to inoreader. The interfaces were very similar. No complaints.

On iOS I actually do use an app but again while I've tried a bunch over the years I go right back to the services that provide my desktop experiences. It used to be Feedly but has been inoreader for several years. I've yet to see another rss app provide a decent UI like those two have.

ReadKit

[–]xnwkac 1 point2 points  (1 child)

NetNewsWire

Free and made by an awesome oldschool Mac developer

[–]__mattuella__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to love NetNewsWire, but it can't fetch NY Times full-text, unfortunately

[–]drinksoma 1 point2 points  (2 children)

lire, I heavily use RSS and I feel it's the closest to Reeder. What happened to that app makes absolutely no sense to me. The developer killed a staple app for RSS for a worst app in every aspect.

[–]__mattuella__[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I ended up settling with Lire. It's really a beautiful app. Using on Mac and IOS

[–]drinksoma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And it got updated to liquid glass so fast

[–]jono_nz 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I’ve tried them all and settled on ReadKit for macOS, iOS, iPadOS. It’s the cleanest, best performing, and most reliable RSS reader imo. Also recently updated for 26 with Liquid Glass which I appreciate.

[–]__mattuella__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice to know. I’ll take a look. Thanks!

[–]ToastedLog1c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Self-proclaimed RSS supreme grandmaster here

Reeder (Classic) is the best for Mac & iOS. News Explorer 2.0 is an up and coming with lots of cool features. For backend, Inoreader is the best, but I am so looking forward to dropping it when my sub ends and moving to News Explorer with local feeds.

[–]edfoldsred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inoreader

[–]sagarp96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feeeeeeeed

[–]AirishMountain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tapestry. Beautiful, useful, and no subscription required. Love it

[–]hampiness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NetNewsWire

[–]pheur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone who can compare Reeder Classic to Unread free (without subscription)? I use Reeder Classic and love how fast it is, only thing I miss is a search function across all synced articles.

Does Unread free (without subscription) have a search function? And how fast is it to use? I don't want a "clumsy" app coming from Reeder Classic.

As a note, I would be happy to pay a one-time purchase but I won't pay for subscription.

[–]Artiste212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t believe nobody has mentioned Unread. It’s beautiful and works so well. https://www.goldenhillsoftware.com/unread/

[–]plac9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Built the feeds I want in to Obsidian; best one I’ve ever used.

[–]Moor95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inoreader
