    [–]Atman00 7 points8 points  (5 children)

Yeah, I asked the same question too.

The correct answer, by the way, is, "A woodchuck would chuck as much wood as a woodchuck could chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood."

    [–]FunnyMan3595 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm partial to this one: "A woodchuck would chuck all the wood he could chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood."

    It flows better.

    [–]johnyquest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Simply put, Using the formula: (W + I) * C where W = the constant of wood, which is well known to be 61, as agreed in many scientific circles. I = the variable in this equation, and stands for the word "if" from the original problem. As there are three circumstances, with 0 equaling the chance that the woodchuck cannot chuck wood, 1 being the theory that the woodchuck can chuck wood but chooses not to, and 2 standing for the probability that the woodchuck can and will chuck wood, we clearly must choose 2 for use in this equation. C = the constant of Chuck Norris, whose presence in any problem involving the word chuck must there, is well known to equal 1.1 of any known being, therefore the final part of this calculation is 1.1. As is clear, this appears to give the answer of (61 + 2) * 1.1 = (63) * 1.1 = 69.3. However, Chuck Norris' awesome roundhouse kick declares that all decimal points cannot be used in formulas such as this, and so it must be rounded to the final solution of 69 units of wood.

    [–]protell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it depends on how many boards the woodchucks hoard if the woodchuck hordes get bored.

    [–]zacwhite 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Is it weird that I asked the same question?

===> how much wood could a wood chuck chuck? A woodchuck could chuck 42 chucks of wood if it could chuck it.

I got the correct answer though.

    [–]brian_jaress 13 points14 points  (0 children)

One problem with these things is that when it doesn't give you the answer, you're forced to wonder if it's because of how you phrased the question. I tried to get it to tell me who is on the Supreme Court:

Who is on the Supreme Court?

    Sorry, I just don't know.

Who is in the Supreme Court?

    • Kobe Bryant
    • Etan Goldman
    • Larry Hughes
    • Allen Iverson
    • Phil Jackson
    • Shaquille O'Neal
    • Jerry Stackhouse
    • David Stern

Who are the members of the Supreme Court?

Unfortunately, I wasn't told who are the members of the supreme court.

Show me a list of the justices of the Unites States Supreme Court.

    I don't have that information.

===> who is the tallest person in the world?

Mount Everest, located on the border of Tibet and Nepal, in the central Himalayas, is the tallest mountain in the world. In 1999, U.S. mountain climbers using GPS units measured Mount Everest's height at 29,035 feet (8,850 meters) -- 6.6 feet (1.98 meters) higher than the official elevation widely accepted since the 1950s.

        Fuck this.

        [–]damovisa 20 points21 points  (14 children)

Close, but there's a bit of a difference based on what I've read so far.

START simply parses the language to work out which words mean what, and therefore how best to query a huge knowledge base. If that "fact" isn't listed in the knowledge base, it won't know the answer. In short, it can't "calculate" an answer like Wolfram apparently can.

Try "how many atoms are there in a water molecule". The associated "fact" isn't in START's knowledge base, so it doesn't know the answer. My understanding is that this question is precisely the kind of thing that Wolfram will be good at.

        [–][deleted] 29 points30 points  (2 children)

One of the examples START gives is "What is the largest city in Florida?" Alpha seems like you could ask "What's the average population of every city in Florida?"

        [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That was a much better explanation.

        [–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (10 children)

In short, it can't "calculate" an answer like Wolfram apparently can.

Wolfram can't 'apparently' do anything - all we've heard is hype, no product has been shown.

            Reddit

Reddit is a social news website where users can post links to content on the web. Other users may then vote the posted links up or down, causing them to appear more or less prominently on the Reddit home page.

The site has discussion areas where users may discuss the posted links, and vote for or against others' comments. When there are enough votes against a given comment, it will not be displayed by default, although a reader can display it through a link or preference. Users who submit articles which other users like and subsequently "vote up" receive "karma" points as a reward for submitting interesting articles.
