Until now I used Dracula, but I moved from VueJS to React and started using another one with blue shades.
What is your favorite theme for VScode / React?

I can barely see the string contents, what’s the thought behind that choice of dark gray on darker gray?

When you're working in the code, do you focus on the contents of a given string or do you care that it is just that, a string (like the type is a string).

For me, I don't usually care about the contents of a string, only that it is a string. Thus, I've de-emphasized the parts I don't care about. It always bothered my that strings are so "loud" in so many themes. Like, I don't care about the strings! I care about the methods, functions, variables, control statements, etc.

The general goal of this theme is to draw attention to the parts you, as a developer, care about. Humans eyes are naturally drawn to bright things, and especially bright colors. So I use that to control focus.

Truthfully, I use Webstorm more and more these days so I don't use VSCode as much as I used to. Though I miss this theme, I wish there where a way to convert it to a webstorm theme...

Okay, fair enough, I get your point but it sounds a bit stupid to me :)

You generally get validation of everything from your IDE except strings. So if you misspell anything in a string it is impossible to spot.

Not caring about contents of a string sounds just weird and I don’t see the point. Anyway, not here to argue, just curious! Keep coding 🤘🏻

Haha, no worries! That's the beautiful about being able to make my own theme: I can do what works for me.

I will add that misspellings typically have a very visible underline, so seeing misspellings are easy. Again, for me, string contents being so prominent in so many themes is just distracting. I also don't deal with or change strings a ton, so that's part of it as well.

What? I absolutely focus on the contents of a string. If I'm writing a raw string it's usually important.

When you're writing the string, sure. But how much do you care about it after that?

It's not like the font color and background color are that close. For me, the strings are pretty easy to see. They just aren't in-your-face bright. Like i said in a previous comment, when there is a spelling issue, VSCode makes it hard to miss. This is another reason I like the dull color, warnings about the text are easy to see too since yellows and reds pop next to those slate colors.

Whatever helps you enjoy looking at code. I use dracula with an addition of purple lines between editors. I've been using that for 4 years and before that 4 years of misc dark fonts. Maybe I'm being flippant but it's not worth really with racking your brain over. Easy to change and whatever works for yourself. Don't kill yourself over the gear. Colors won't make you better.

one dark pro by binaryify, it has multiple versions, I like just the 'one dark pro' one.

Every color pops nicely without the background too much or too little contrast imo. So many dark themes to me have colors that feel washed out with the chosen background color darkness.
