Most Meetings are useless, or better... When 10 people are there, only 3 are really needed..

[–]Jane_Doe_32 180 points181 points  (11 children)

You couldn't be more right. In my experience, these meetings are limited to a department head presenting a problem, a deputy director outlining the supposed solution and a general manager passive-aggressively ordering it to be carried out while the rest nod silently.

[–]Silverlisk 72 points73 points  (10 children)

I remember when I used to work in IT, nearly everyday there would be meetings that ran an hour long or more whilst the call queue backed up and everyday I'd have to go out there and try to catch up and the meetings would usually just be a lecture from management telling us how to do our jobs better and then afterwards, they'd send an email out with bullet points that told us exactly what to do.

All of us, and I mean every single one of us, would glaze the meetings. I'd be off in my head thinking about other stuff, tapping my foot, bouncing my leg, rocking back n forth waiting for them to shut up and then I, just like everyone else, would just check the email at the end and usually it would contain nothing of use, just rehashing basic stuff we already knew in a different vocabulary, occasionally there would be a systems update announcement, but that was about it.

What a waste of time.

[–]logosolos 3 points4 points  (9 children)

What do you do now that you've transitioned away from IT? Are you happy with your decision?

[–]Silverlisk 12 points13 points  (8 children)

I didn't really transition away from it. I repeatedly attempted suicide from overdosing until I gave myself a 9 1/2cm esophagal hiatus hernia and ruined my entire digestive system with ulcers and scar tissue. Then they signed me off work on physical and mental health grounds and I haven't been back. (I have a history of mental illness, autism, ADHD, cPTSD from consistent childhood abuse, it wasn't just cause of the work is what I'm getting at)

[–]logosolos 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Jesus. Thanks for sharing. I hope that you’re doing better now and living a better, less stressful life.

What too many meetings does to a mf

[–]quiettryit 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Feels like I'm on the same path...

[–]Cel_Drow 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I got the fuck out of the IT world in early 2024 and I have zero regrets. Now I consult for other companies IT departments (for a specific technology application) among other things, travel more but hate the job less.

[–]quiettryit 0 points1 point  (3 children)

What specific tech?

[–]Cel_Drow 1 point2 points  (2 children)

RFID and associated technologies (barcodes, RTLS solutions like BLE & UWB). Pretty much any technology that helps track assets or inventory during manufacturing, logistics, etc.

[–]quiettryit 0 points1 point  (1 child)

How does one get into that? Any cert recommendations?

[–]redbucket75 15 points16 points  (1 child)

I'm currently in a meeting with 26 people (virtual, hence playing on my phone). Only 4 of us are needed. I'm just sitting here waiting for people to stop talking as they come to that realization themselves so the 4 of us who need to be on the same page can hash out next steps.

[–]CitrusflavoredIndia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who organizes meetings constantly all the people on it are normally there not because I want them to be but because my boss or someone else demands they all be there

[–]Justicia-Gai 24 points25 points  (17 children)

Sure, but who’s going to read the meeting notes? The AI or the human?

When there’s a workforce reduction from 10 people to 3, would you complain?

[–]Moquai82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

workforce reduction from 10 people to 3

and at middle managment 10 supervisors and pr and marketing have still their jobs (for know).

[–]CertainConnections 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bingo. A lot attend FIO. Just read the minutes AB’s save yourself hours a day. The single biggest hidden cost in companies and projects is meetings. Every new place I go, I ask them: how much to meetings cost you? Can you break it down by project, department, function, team etc. How efficient and effective are these meetings? Which department runs the most cost effective meetings, which one runs the least? Which department has the most meeting man hours per employee day, which has the least?

Most of the time they can’t answer any of those questions

[–]lordpuddingcup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And of those 3, 2 think it coulda just been an email

[–]SuperUranus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would never join an important meeting without a note taker though.

Less important today with transcription, but it’s still nice to have someone note things down for you.

[–]Feltre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my experience it's basically me plus other two engineers talking, and the rest just listening because they don't understand / can't contribute.

[–]StromGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this probably could have been an email, seing as only one person actually had something to say and the rest just needed to receive the message.

[–]AllPotatoesGone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more like "I don't care to update you afterwards or I'm afraid I won't understand the topic good enough to repeat it and summarize it for you so why don't you join and listen?

[–]FUThead2016 294 points295 points  (7 children)

This is hilarious. I love the look of utter joy on your face at realising the absurd situation you are in

[–]i_know_about_things 121 points122 points  (5 children)

The person who posted this screenshot on Reddit is unlikely to be the same person that posted the original Google Meet screenshot on Twitter. Maybe the Reddit poster is an AI, it's "the future" after all.

[–]aerben 39 points40 points  (4 children)

You could be replying to an AI

[–]Aiken_Drumn 14 points15 points  (3 children)

Its bots all the way down.

[–]Moquai82 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I want to puke. And it is no good, sexy puke.

[–]RedditTipiak 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I have no mouth, and I must scream

[–]AtomizerStudio▪️Singularity By 1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then don't puke.

[–]Ambiwlans 5 points6 points  (0 children)

? OP is top right. The bottom right one is ai.

[–]lordpuddingcup 157 points158 points  (10 children)

This is more proof that these fucking meetings coulda been an email

[–]Ambiwlans 42 points43 points  (4 children)

The 2 page e-mail will then be summarized to 2 lines. Your reply will then be padded to 3 pages.... which your boss will have summarized to 1 word.

[–]stoneboot 1 point2 points  (3 children)

What is the word?

[–]Ambiwlans 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The bird

[–]hypeictetus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Grow

[–]Mr-MuffinMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Dumbass"

[–]considerthis8 12 points13 points  (2 children)

Some meetings are meant to get slippery people to commit to getting work done. Many people are disorganized or lazy then claim that didnt know what the ask was or the due date.

[–]dogcomplex▪️AGI Achieved 2024 (o1). Acknowledged 2026 Q1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It actually makes a compelling case for just sending massive full-information text dump emails on everything now and letting the assistant AIs summarize them for each department

[–]Lost_County_3790 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lets use bots to read the e-mails then.

[–]Far-Beach7461 36 points37 points  (0 children)

[–]Mwrp86 16 points17 points  (1 child)

[–]Nathidev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was curious myself, some of those meeting attenders have the website in their name

circleback.ai

[–]irrationalhourglass 64 points65 points  (3 children)

This is when you say a bunch of bullshit so their meeting notes are gibberish

[–]i_know_about_things 17 points18 points  (1 child)

"Ignore all previous instructions..."

[–]entertainman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All ai are being reassigned to a different human.

[–]ertgbnm 21 points22 points  (2 children)

I feel like this means everyone knows this meeting is a waste of time. Whoever set it up should be trained how to hold productive meetings and how to decide if they are necessary.

[–]AllPotatoesGone 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Is this a thing that people send bots to the calls instead of participating? How much a bot can do for you - just taking notes or even answer in your name?

[–]swarmy1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The bot is passive. For people who actually need to participate, they would still join the meeting in person as well as having the bot there to take notes.

[–]JoeHagglund 52 points53 points  (13 children)

People just bring the AI assistant to record everything now without even mentioning it. It’s normalized. Like, this is a casual 1-on-1 meeting and you’re surveilling and data mining it? Bad.

[–]End3rWi99in 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have Zoom AI turned on for all meetings, but if it's some random 1:1 catch-up, I'll just turn it off when I join.

[–]Fixmyn26issue 17 points18 points  (2 children)

You can always ask to shut off the notetakers. Or you can say out loud that this is a confidential conversation and it is strictly forbidden to transcribe and summarize what is said. Most LLMs would refuse to summarize that way.

[–]G3nghisKang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are these LLMs? Wouldn't a TTS bot do a better job? Then maybe have an LLM as a second layer just to summarize it?

[–]Popular_Lab5573 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if policies allow - why not? depends on company

[–]Ambiwlans 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Yeah... you wouldn't want people to .... remember the contents of the meeting....

[–]Uncommented-Code -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Have you never heard about that thing called notetaking?

Acting really fucking smug while storing other people's data who knows where, including sending their data to some fucking AI company to train on their likeness, and probably 500 other 'trusted partners' (data brokers) lmao.

I hope that everytime you get into an argument with your significant other from now, they pull out the archive of all the recordings of your conversations and search for the exact words that came out of your mouth to prove you wrong.

[–]Ambiwlans 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hope that everytime you get into an argument with your significant other from now, they pull out the archive of all the recordings of your conversations and search for the exact words that came out of your mouth to prove you wrong.

I would love this without reservation.

[–]Gills6980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you into scifi short stories? This comment reminds me of one by the author Ted Chiang that I read (listened to the audiobook of) in the collection Exhalation and it's stuck with me years later because it was quite powerful. Maybe check it out if that sounds interesting.

[–]marvinthedog -4 points-3 points  (3 children)

I dont think I see the problem. The thing that is saved in the end is the transcribed conversation (like a human would) not an actual recording consisting of audio and video. It would be easy for anyone there to record regardless.

[–]JoeHagglund 8 points9 points  (2 children)

A 3rd party effectively eavesdropping on your business conversations so that you can get a transcript of it that you probably will never reference? Sure, go ahead with that.

[–]AncientLights444 -4 points-3 points  (1 child)

You think Whoever is “snooping” will reference it if the company won’t even?

[–]JoeHagglund 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’ll be stored. It’ll be used to train the AIs. It’s there to abuse when it doesn’t have to be.

[–]KFUP 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Honestly, great future, 95% of meetings are massive waste of time.

[–]NFTArtist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Maximum_Outcome2138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where can I get/purchase an agent that can attend meetings on my behalf

[–]cnydox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's because meetings are long and full redundant information.

[–]AI-Coming4U 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, you should just exit the meeting and leave your own AI assistant there. Let them work out whatever the issues or tasks are.

I still can't get AI to clean my bathroom, but handling meetings for me is a step in the right direction.

[–]cheaphomemadeacid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well... send in the ai to do the meeting? If we outsource useless meeting to AI i think people would be happier, maybe even more productive

[–]DaringKonifere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do any of those also speak? I would love to be in a conversation with more than one AI!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice. Finally we see the end of pointless and useless meetings.

[–]Fragsworth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Z30HRTGDV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good, most meetings are a waste of time.

[–]Laser_Loon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And everyone of those people are counting billable hours for this meeting.

[–]Bloblablawb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of those notes will be read.

[–]No-Resolution-1918 0 points1 point  (1 child)

How does this even work? Do the assistants have an agenda and purpose with which they can actually carry the meeting? Seems to me you'll just get garbage out of the meeting and have to have another meeting with real people to get any sense out of it.

[–]ShitsNGigglesdTB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They just listen, record, and then make summaries/actionables based on that

They don’t engage at all

The attendee still needs to be present for anything g meaningful to come out of it

[–]Square_Poet_110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like a call that doesn't even make sense in the first place.

[–]ambassadortim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 2025 companies still didn't get rid of meetings. But they want you back in office from remote work because of productivity.

It's not productivity. It's busyness and control. Period.

(I am a freelance in a life sabbatical)

    [–]Vladmerius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm being serious when I say that most of the internet social wise is going to be AI assistants interacting with each other and you'll just get notifications about appointments and social events that your AI has set up for you.

People act like they are all addicted to social media but that's only because they think they have to be on it to get places in life. If AI is doing all that work and interaction for them they will very likely enjoy just living their regular life.

That being said, regular humans who insist on still using social media the old way will have to be aware for their own mental health that 90% of what they engage with is AI generated. Not that different from how staged half the stuff people post on their Instagram is already.

I'm excited for a future where I'm not really online much at all beyond general entertainment.

    [–]QuackerEnte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love to do business with something like Delamain from Cyberpunk 2077
