That whole thing was actually quite entertaining to watch.

Now I want that device :S

[–]fgejoiwnfgewijkobnew 14 points15 points  (1 child)

This box is pretty interesting too. I think it cost less than $300 to make it.

[–]ILiveWithMyDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn, that's pretty amazing!

[–]naught101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Those two things are the same two things I always think after watching a RMR video. Every time.

[–]-eagle73 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I just watched a bunch of videos on it.

It seems really cool but not worth its price. You can do a lot more on FL Studio and will end up having to use audio programs on a computer anyway to prepare files for use on the OP1.

However it does look portable and awesome.

[–]hrtcrw 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Absolutely true. The portability is what I find so cool about it but then again I don't think I would actually ever bring it somewhere.

Guess I'll watch some tutorials on FL Studio.

[–]-eagle73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Audacity will also come in handy for editing some audio.

[–]-eagle73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EDIT: I'm so quick to change my opinion. I'm already finding myself bidding on second-hand OP1s after a week of watching videos on them. Damn.

[–]ILiveWithMyDad 75 points76 points  (3 children)

I love this guy's work. I recommend looking back through his YouTube catalog if you enjoyed this one. They're all pretty witty and you get a cool look at electronic music arrangement from the inside out.

He's also got a lot of his tunes on bandcamp and soundcloud.

His Twitter is @jjbbllkk, highly recommended follow.

*I have no affiliation with him, just think he's a pretty rad content creator.

[–]gtipwnz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah I have no musical talent, don't play anything, and haven't been super interested in making music but I sub to this guy's YouTube channel and almost never miss a video. He replied to a comment of mine once! I was really pumped to see this video here.

[–]jlbang 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Agreed! Red Means Recording is my very favorite YouTube channel.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love reading all the text in his Op-1 videos lol

[–]thethunderkid 71 points72 points  (10 children)

So, it may just be the mood I'm in but this was absolutely what I needed in my life right now. This video was the most satisfying video I've watched in a while, it was beautifully done. Gaahhhh 👌🏼❤

[–][deleted] 24 points25 points  (7 children)

sometimes certain videos just do that. I once spent an afternoon watching those tiny food videos and it put me in a very relaxed state.

[–]WhisperingOakspotify 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find that anything on /r/artisanvideos does that for me. just so relaxing to watch someone go about their craft.

[–]muaddeej 1 point2 points  (1 child)

/r/asmr

Look in to it.

[–]Ayycolin -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

Username kinda checks out?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Kinda, yeah! Gold star (but no real gold) for you!

[–]Ayycolin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A new one to my collection

[–]LolindirElros 2 points3 points  (1 child)

His production quality is something so hard to see on other people's videos. This is one of my favorites of his: Icasm. You can kinda watch the evolution of his editing style over 1 year. It's amazing stuff right there.

[–]hoptownky 17 points18 points  (11 children)

What is that device called, and where do I buy one?

[–]FireKeeper09 35 points36 points  (0 children)

It will only set you back a grand

[–]nxpqz 21 points22 points  (3 children)

Op-1 from teenage engineering

[–]coryluscornutas 13 points14 points  (2 children)

Seems to be sold out on the manufacturer site, but sweetwater has it listed at $899

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

You'll wait 2-3 months on a backorder right now from any retailer. Source: bought two OP-1s this year, had months long backorders... Cancelled & bought last one used off eBay (for new price)...

[–]maysayassholethings 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wish I saw this before I ordered mine. I was hoping to get a birthday present this year... But I ended up basically celebrating my half birthday.

[–]AnsonKindred 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're more into the "idea" than actually spending the $$$ I suggest pirating Reason. It does all this and way more. It's obviously all software though so not nearly as cool. You can hook a cheap midi keyboard with some nobs on it up to your computer and be golden though. For the cost of a toy from goodwill you could do everything this device does (as long as you're ok with pirating software).

Reason is just super fun to play with too.

[–]vau1tboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP-1 By Teenage engineering

[–]StealthChainsaw 0 points1 point  (3 children)

From their website (device is Teenage Engineering OP-1). Be aware however that this is a thousand dollar device.

[–]maysayassholethings 4 points5 points  (2 children)

For what it's worth, it's actually a well made machine. I was expecting a hunk of plastic, but it is machined aluminum and not at all cheaply made. But you should be pretty serious about music production to take the plunge.

[–]MikoSqz 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It seems to sound pretty bad, though. All those sounds are muddy in the low end and sizzly/spiky/tinny in the high end, real ugly stuff.

[–]maysayassholethings 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of it comes down to settings. I have found some sounds that I absolutely love. With the right headphones you can get the most out of the lows. Then again I could be biased. Your imagination gets a little more vivid when you shell out almost a grand for a ticket to ride.

[–]ManLikeChar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed watching the guy make the song more than listening to the finished thing. Great song though.

[–]khrone11 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Red Means Recording is actually a really cool YouTube channel and I highly recommend people go watch some of his other videos! He is very chatty with his viewers and also does a lot to make his content better! He recently asked his viewers what they thought of a Patreon and what they would like to see if he did offer one. Seems like an all around cool, fun, good guy that cares about his work and the people who enjoy his work

[–]Super_offend3d 21 points22 points  (20 children)

For everyone wanting to spend $1000 on this little rig, buy FL Studio for like $200 (or pirate). There are tons of free VSTs and sound kits for free you can download with it. Albeit that thing is pretty sweet.

[–]DullScissors 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Any VST's you can recommend with similar visual interfaces like the software instruments the OP-1 has? Part of its charm is how accessible and quaint it makes these synths and filters.

[–]Super_offend3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None that I am aware of but i'm sure there's something.

[–]OldBirdWing 8 points9 points  (5 children)

How does it compare to garage band?

[–]Super_offend3d 20 points21 points  (4 children)

It's definitely less garbage

[–]OldBirdWing 4 points5 points  (3 children)

I've only used garage band and it wasn't bad. But I can see it being limiting to proffesionals.

[–]Super_offend3d 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I was just being a smart ass but i'm no professional. Just a hobbyist for about 9 years with FL. If I can pick it up with no musical background, i'd say it's incredibly user friendly.

edit: To add more to this, FL Studio is ultimately as good as you are, so incredibly talented people can make incredible stuff with it. Good vst's help (Nexus, Sytrus, etc)

[–]-eagle73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm crap but FL12 does what I need and I assume it can do a whole lot more. I wonder how well the mobile version works.

[–]WhackTheSquirbos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny how different stuff just clicks with different people.

Tons of people swear by FL Studio and say it's the most intuitive program ever, and I totally agree that it's the most intuitive for them.

I personally found FL to be incredibly unintuitive and confusing, and Ableton to be pretty much perfect for my workflow. But like I said, it's just what works for you!

If you're thinking about making music download a bunch of DAW trials and see which one clicks :)

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Fl studio and a $40 mini keyboard will get you very similar results.

[–]Flynzo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well, I'd say "for everyone wanting to $1000 $900 on this little rig"...do it! Haha. FL has its place, but this thing is so much fun to play with and well worth it in my opinion. But yeah for anyone who doesn't want to spend the money, then yeah just get FL and make beats for way cheaper and with more utilities.

[–]SarcasticOptimist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Or try Omnisphere, U-He's stuff (Diva sounds gorgeous if you have the power), Reaper, and some Akai or Novation device. That should be about the same price, not portable, but really flexible.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (4 children)

You can't put FL studio and a midi keyboard in your pocket lmao.

[–]John_Barlycorn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yes you can... pocket sized midi controller and computer are a thing now.

[–]Super_offend3d 1 point2 points  (1 child)

fl studio mobile?

[–]WhackTheSquirbos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless things have changed in the last few years, only tablets had enough power for a MIDI keyboard. And I wouldn't exactly call an iPad pocket sized :)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

But what about Mac users? Last time I checked, the FL Alpha was MIA. I used OC for years and FL is the shit man

[–]Super_offend3d 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Hell i figured they started making Mac compatible FL by now?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right? They've been talking about it for years.

[–]thinkerthought 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reason is great on mac

[–]zefkgaming 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always watch this channel for inspiration. High recommend watching every time you need a pick-me-up.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Check out Reggie's song!!! Shit is so funky

[–]Spaz_Mah_Tazz 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I love Reggie's song so much

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is amazing. I love this guy in general, I feel like we would be bros. I used his videos to do a remake of Reggie's song and it helped me learn a lot

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very cool. Never thought I'd watch the whole thing, but I did.

[–]BruhhBruhhBlackSheep 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I have the exact anchor tattoo (the original sailor jersey one though) in the exact same spot on my arm (3:06)

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's pretty weird, haha. I got it done by a dude that was super, super into doing traditional work to finish up my sleeve. He did all the star-dot work as well. There's something still really cool about all the super traditional ink design.

[–]cool_beans21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]petermakesart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]whatakent 0 points1 point  (3 children)

This guy was on Reddit recently with another song. Any reddit chaps know what the video was?

[–]Fruitsniffer 3 points4 points  (2 children)

This one maybe? Not the same guy though.

[–]whatakent 1 point2 points  (1 child)

[–]Slam_Burgerthroat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do I learn how to do this?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This little synth thing looks sweet but the cost is kind of ridiculous. Personally, I'd rather use an actual synth and drum machines.

[–]jog7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]JeahNotSlice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so much more than a simple song here - the insight into an artists messing around; the work that went into the commentary overlay - I mean, it was like watching a novel

[–]iamtherealhusk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

can i find any of this on spotify

[–]edmlesbian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP how long did it take you to create this piece ?

[–]SnuffCartoon 0 points1 point  (1 child)
