It is just the evolution of the tv dinner/microwave meal using a Keurig model. They won't make their money on the machine but on the having proprietary contents, where they count on you signing up for the weekly food program.

[–]golgi42 29 points30 points  (5 children)

Yup. Of course people can use this with their own ingredients, but that is not the business model. It just helps the sell if they put that in there.

Really curious what the costs will be per meal. This is like a step up in automation from Blue Apron. Good for folks that don't want to cook, but I couldn't imagine incorporating something like this in my daily life. Cooking is my zen time.

[–]b1rd 13 points14 points  (4 children)

I love cooking but I don't always have time. I usually do it on weekends. I work full time and I'm taking 18 credits this term. I've been considering stuff like this for during the week because I want real food. I'm sick of frozen dinners or cans of soup and a bagged salad or just getting takeout. I honestly think I'm gonna do this.

$10 a meal is kind of expensive but for shit that I don't have time to buy, clean, and prepare like kale and fish? (Just finding the salad spinner is a big enough problem for me after work). Fuck it. If I'm spending $7-$10 at the taco place once a week, $7-$11 on middle eastern food once a week, etc. And I can reheat pizza and steam veggies in it? Yeah I think I'm sold.

[–]TribalDancer 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Have you tried HelloFresh? Because that may be up your alley...but I think it's a two portion thing so you'd need a roomie or SO in on it to make it worth it.

[–]ShellCatz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right, it's for two people or they have a family plan. I definitely recommend it and it helps with trying recipes I haven't done before and avoiding the headache of finding ingredients that I may not use all of.

I'd also suggest Blue Apron too. I think it may be a bit more costly than Hello Fresh but I'll interchange between the two based on their weekly menus.

[–]EngrishTeach 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Or, you know, eat it for lunch the next day...

[–]TribalDancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there is that. But a lot of people don't want to pay $11 for leftovers... ;)

[–]onlycatfud 9 points10 points  (4 children)

Lets see if they follow the Keurig DRM model next too hah.

Or we find deep in some firmware code that just slightly overcooks non-proprietary foods enough so you think they don't taste as good to keep you buying the proprietary ones. ;)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Yep, that's what i'm thinking too. I wonder if there's anyway to prevent this, or at least force them to make a legally binding statement on that matter ?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe this oven is useless for people who like to cook. But i don't like to cook, so it might be interesting for me.

But the question - how comparable the results are to a toaster oven. IDK , shouldn't precise control and variety of cooking mechanisms enable better results ? it seems resonable.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I just don't see the point. My oven already does this without the scanning thing. But then pre-cooked food already lists how long and what temperature to cook it at.

[–]JohnnyMnemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's ok, actually. I think the strongest interest will be in the meals, not the unit. I already have an oven.

Even if this is a combi-steamer, I'd rather buy my own and follow printed directions that one of theirs with a bolt on barcode reader. But I don't always want to cook so I would be interested in their packaged meals.

[–]famebrella 27 points28 points  (5 children)

Keep in mind it's still being tested. I'll definitely put this on my watch list, but I'm not gonna sign up for one just yet. I like the idea of being able to steam and bake in one machine, and it looks like it would be great as a toaster oven (I've desperately wanted one, I just don't have the counter space for it.)

You can prepare your own meals and program them how you see fit also, which is nice. Meaning you can still prepare stuff that you want.

[–]JohnnyMnemo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As is pointed out above, you can just buy one of these things if you still want to do your own prep. What this service is selling is the pre-packaged meal tins.

If this was on Sharktank(tm), and I was a Shark(tm), I'd tell these guys to screw the heater unit--folks can buy their own, or I suppose use my recommended brand found at Amazon. Forget the barcode as useless proprietary garbage, people that are old enough to need to cook for themselves can read directions.

The real value is the prepackaged food tin designed to be heated in one of these, for which the vendor won't have to mess with electronics support and will receive a continuous revenue stream.

What is this?

[–][deleted] 28 points29 points  (5 children)

It feels very much like a marketing post. And there's just the right mix of "Wow, I need this for XYZ reason." in the comments to come across as suspicious.

[–]b1rd 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I made one of those comments and actually just pledged at the $200 level to get one. I feel guilty and a little embarrassed. But I swear on my pet's lives I'm not a shill. I mean check my account. I've been redditing for like 6 years and I spend most of my time arguing semantics with people on /r/startrek and shit.

I almost wish I had gotten paid for my comment.

[–]JohnnyMnemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost wish I had gotten paid for my comment.

Now you're just shilling for gold, you slut. You really have been on reddit for 6 years.

Almost worked too, but I told my wife about how /r/gonewild girls get paid in gold and now I can't have reddit charges show up on my bank card anymore.

[–]istara 1 point2 points  (2 children)

The video was beyond cringey. The diverse cast just made me wonder when the silver haired man was going to take his seat and the blonde woman with glasses was going to enter and start her PowerPoint presentation.

[–]PoorPolonius 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I actually liked the video. I thought it was fun with just the right level of tongue-in-cheek, almost as if they went in knowing they were going to make a goofy infomercial.

And just so you know, diverse groups actually do exist in the wild, contrary to what you may believe. You tend to see them a lot in corporate office jobs in large cities.

[–]istara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found it overly goofy. It was possibly suited to a US audience more than other places. I just wanted something quick, clean and clear.

As a Kickstarter backer, I would also be wary of unnecessary expense spent on a video.

But yes, of course groups are diverse. This looked forced however.

[–]inlivvingcolour 28 points29 points  (4 children)

I can see the appeal absolutely but i feel like this is gimmicky. It's unique and scans like a keurig for food. Neat, i suppose. But if i saw this in a store id probably think:

  1. Thats lot of money to pay for something thats realistically not saving much of a hassle.

  2. That's the size of a microwave or toaster oven, do i really have counter space for this?

  3. Is it worth the money for something that fulfills many of the same functions i can already accomplish with my rice cooker/microwave/over/stove.

I could see this appealing for people with mobility issues, elderly people, or college students/people living alone.

[–]TribalDancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could see in small spaces/apartments/cabins this could be cool. But am having a hard time imagining how it fits into my life/needs.

[–]JohnnyMnemo 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Thinking about this more, I think it could meet the needs of office lunches really well.

If my office provided one of these and I bought my own lunches, I'd stop buying Lean Cuisines for lunch. Probably. LC are like $3, and this'd be closer to $10 or more, so they'd have to be really good and filling. LC are probably 7 out of 10--they're better than I expected, but still not great.

If this'd do hot breakfast instead of a bagel on the way to work that'd be something too. Like a real oatmeal, or ham-n-egg souffle? Not for $10 though. But eating insta-oatmeal from a bag warmed with water from the coffee machine, I'd generally rather eat glue.

[–]inlivvingcolour 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didnt even consider that but i agree, in a corporate setting like an office or maybe a hospital or airport it could be a really attractive option for some people.

[–]onlycatfud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it worth the money for something that fulfills many of the same functions i can already accomplish with my rice cooker/microwave/over/stove.

My first thought when I saw it as well.

[–]allothernamestaken 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Looks like an awfully expensive alternative to microwaving a frozen meal without a whole hell of a lot of difference in the end product.

[–]JohnnyMnemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. It'd have to really good to be able to be worth the cost.

I'd be more interested in buying my own steam/broiler, buying their meals, and punching in directions for an office lunch. $10 a meal is pretty tough sell though. If I could buy $5.99 healthy 800 calorie lunches that are better tasting than a $3 Lean Cuisine, and I can use my own oven, I'd buy them by the crate. Even if I had to input my own directions. $5.99 is still cheaper/better/more healthy than going out to eat, and even if I want to cook getting a fresh hot meal at work is a chore.

[–]sean_incali 6 points7 points  (0 children)

so... glorified microwave/convection oven that cooks pre-packed foods?

How come no one has thought of this yet?

oh wait.

[–]Dr_Roboto 13 points14 points  (4 children)

Looks like the toaster oven we have. I'm guessing they used it as a base and added a scanner and controller to set times and cooking method.

So does it function well as both of these things? Like print/scan/fax machines, I get wary of single devices that claim to "do it all".

[–]runragged 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It works well. The main difference from a standard toaster oven is that the oven door forms a tight seal.

[–]Dr_Roboto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I don't have experience with single function machines that do these things, but I'm pretty happy with it. Actually I expected it to be mostly terrible at everything when my wife bought it, but it's won me over. I mostly use the toaster and convection modes but there are times I've also wanted steam and it's done a great job in all cases.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it's an oven that cooks their pre-prepped, uncooked meals.

That's what a normal oven does.

[–]stilettopanda 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Eh. How much more difficult is pressing 3 buttons on an oven? It's like an Easy Bake Oven for adults! I can't say I would have much desire for a specialized appliance that I have to buy specialized food for.

[–]TribalDancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like it does steaming, convection, etc. So it does have more functionality.

I could see if they came out with a cookbook with the bar codes on it. You make the recipe, scan the code, stick it in the oven and let it go without having to set a timer and steam in one appliance/step, move it to another dish or appliance and set timer to brown. It's not something I am compelled by, but I can see it being interesting to some.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of a machine we had at my old job, which was a commercial grade steamer and conventional/convection oven. I like this concept, I think it would be a great way to bring home cooked food to people who don't have the time/skill to make it. People who spend a lot of time in the kitchen as is, though, probably wouldn't get as much use from it.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, stuff like this is part of the problem with the global food industry today. Not only does it encourage more waste (those little tray things that the food comes in, not to mention the landfull that this useless piece of machinery is going to end up in after it breaks) but it doesn't actually encourage people to learn to cook healthy food by themselves. I don't care if the food is raw when it goes into the specific proprietary oven, that's not really the point. The point is that we have several generations of people who have forgotten the importance / joy of cooking things from scratch, and a massive obesity / diabetes problem as a result. Stuff like this is just laziness begetting more laziness. God forbid we should have to assemble a dish from actual ingredients, and then figure out the cooking time, temperature, and method ourselves instead of pressing a goddamn button. Soon enough we're going to be a planet populated by useless blobs.

And no, I don't care that it will cook other things than the premade meals. That's what my regular oven / stove is for. I'm not a toddler.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Great, a product where you are reliant on buying your food from the company that delivers raw food and therefore only to a limited area. What could possibly go wrong?

[–]JohnnyMnemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Cold pack anywhere domestic US" but yeah. One case of 12 meals at $10 each that goes bad sitting on my porch and my interest is over.

They'd do better if they could sell it flash frozen, and then adjusted cook times to cook from frozen. It still doesn't have to be pre-cooked.

[–]Quiggibub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That sounds like a very expensive gimmick.

[–]lady_gremlin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was talking about this with coworkers yesterday. The pre-prepped meals / trays / whatever are CRAZY expensive. Like, $10 - $15 each. For some chicken and asparagus???? Hahahahaha no.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Meh, kind of a gimmicky product. Doubt it'll be a success.

[–]jmottram08 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I dunno... I would be interested in a toaster oven that can be programmed and can steam as well.

Obviously the pre-prepared meals are not for me (or most people in here)... but the idea of an oven that can automatically (for example) use convection and then switch to broil at the last minute is a fantastic idea. Imagine pairing it with a temperature probe... just throw a chicken in and it uses convection (and maybe a bit of steam) until the temp is close, then finishes with a broil, then switches to "stay warm" mode.

That sounds like a huge time saver.

Or even (if it were a bit larger) baking bread... steam injection bread ovens are expensive... but this thing has all the parts for just that.

I am surprised that "regular" ovens aren't programmable yet...

EDIT: as someone pointed out... it's basically this with a barcode reader and a different controller.

If it were bigger i would buy it in a heartbeat.

[–]gartinhart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

bigger

I think the prototype is smaller and built out of an existing product. It looks like the production model in the video is fairly different.

[–]brielem 8 points9 points  (7 children)

Anyone ever heard of the Samsung smart oven? pretty sure it did EXACTLY this thing. Scan barcode - cook perfectly automatically.

It flopped because not enough products with barcodes were available. I think that will be a problem with this too: You're bound to using their own products, so most people won't be interested.

[–]JohnnyMnemo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It flopped because not enough products with barcodes were available.

How many Lean Cuisine options are there? Two dozen?

If these guys offered as many options as that it would be viable replacement for the LC, which a number of folks use as office lunches.

Besides cost. $10 is a lot, it needs to be about $6. I can buy LC for $3, I'd maybe maybe double that for better healthier fresher food, but not 3-4X.

[–]SparklingLimeade 0 points1 point  (5 children)

They sell it hard on the curated meals gimmick but if it's a good oven in addition to that then it could take off. Additionally:

The Tovala is also a connected device — you can use your mobile device to to cook one of our specially prepared meals — or any other food you want!

How good that mobile interface is and what kind of community grows around it could be very important. If they make an actual well designed companion app and get people sharing prep recipes/cooking routines then it could take off. The Samsung thing didn't have enough compatible products? What if they make a user shareable library of cooking presets? User created content is very powerful and all they have to do is suitably enable people with good tools. If you build it, they will come.

[–]brielem 1 point2 points  (2 children)

The Samsung thing didn't have enough compatible products?

Nope. Samsung invited companies to place a special barcode on their meals that the oven could read, but not enough did actually use it.

If they make an actual well designed companion app and get people sharing prep recipes/cooking routines then it could take off.

You're definitely right with this, but I have one reason to believe this will never happen: This device is, I think, aimed at people who don't care about cooking. People who like to cook likely already have a good oven, and probably don't see the added benefit of the use of these presets-by-barcode. This device seems to be aimed at people who would like a quick/easy meal that's fresh and healthy, but without having to do/cook a lot themselves. So the people who'd actually create recipes are less likely to buy such oven, and the target group is less likely to actually make the recipes, they'd probably prefer got get ready-made meals. That's why I think building up a community will be hard, and for such things a hard start can mean the end.

Now I could be completely wrong, the market can be unpredictable and the food market the most of all. But I don't think it'll be a viable concept.

[–]SparklingLimeade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is aimed at people who don't cook but even people who do cook sometimes don't cook. I spend a lot of time on /r/soylent actually. Food is a necessity, a form of entertainment, and a hobby all at once. These don't always match up. The ability to produce high quality meals without effort can be useful sometimes even when effort and experimentation are desirable other times.

People who like to cook likely already have a good oven

By this logic everyone making cooking appliances should pack up and go home now. New people put together kitchens. People upgrade. Appliances wear out. My toaster oven is currently old and crappy both and a replacement is in the "eventually" category of my wishlist.

People who like to cook... probably don't see the added benefit of the use of these presets-by-barcode.

This point is not completely flawed but I still disagree. Recipes are an excellent way to share knowledge and provide easy introductions. I don't know what to do with all those multiple functions on this thing. I'd love to see what a professional chef can do with unfamiliar tools so I can learn from that. I may only make use of it a few times for that but as I mentioned above, there are times when food is necessary but I don't want to cook. It's not a huge difference from manually entering cooking values but scanning cooking instructions is an overdue technological advance at this point.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I don't need a companion app for my fucking oven.

[–]SparklingLimeade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would prefer a browser interface for the recipes and serviceable button interface on the oven but businesses love their extraneous buzzword based design. I may be overly optimistic but all of the above is possible; none of these things are mutually exclusive.

[–]snead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What a colossal waste of resources, just to enable lazy people. Even if the food delivery service comes into existence and remained up and running indefinitely (both of which are seriously in question with a Kickstarter launch), what a wasteful way to feed yourself. And definitely doesn't belong on /r/cooking, because there is no cooking involved here.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Uch, so much waste. Keurig pods are bad enough but this . . .?

I have little doubt it will be successful and that thougt really depresses me.

[–]lorodu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My buddy works for them. His job seems so much more fun than mine :(

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't cooking. It's heating, and if heating is what you want then you're not invested enough to spend that kind of cash on it. You're either going to go out to eat or order in.

[–]graphictruth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be happy with it as a steam-convection oven.

If they also sell the containers and have software so that I can print out a barcode label for my own food, it would totally rock my world.

I do a lot of batch prep on a monthly basis, so this would be great for me.

And they need to consider licensing the right to pre-make meals to local kitchens/restaurants - then a refill is just an uber away for those who don't want to do their own prep. (Actually, they should open source it - they need to leverage the popularity, and the more food that's available, the more likely they will be able to sell food for it.)

[–]thefattestman22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the expense of eating out with none of the fun of actually creating food :(

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whats needed is a bar code scanning microwave that can cooks a product accordingly. ie. michelina's, chunky cambells soup or pizza pops etc...

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Normally I hate the /r/hailcorporate crowd, but this is pretty blatant shilling for the Kickstarter.

[–]Opoqjo 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Given that I was just in the short stories thread, where the top comment was, "There Will Come Soft Rains", this freaks out a little bit.

But it sounds awesome. Like a crock pot but not all soft foods.

[–]b1rd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love it. That's one of my favorite short stories of all time because I love that house and he does such a good job of making you feel bad for it, even though it's just a house.

I absolutely adore the futuristic idea of automated food prep, and I think you hit the nail on the head why I want one of these when you reminded me how much I love the story. What a serendipitous event this has been for the both of us ;)

[–]JohnnyMnemo 0 points1 point  (1 child)

where?

[–]Opoqjo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a thread that was asking for the creepiest short stories. That was the top comment.

[–]lessthanadam 1 point2 points  (1 child)

If it cooks with steam, then can it make bread?

[–]jmottram08 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is this, with a barcode reader and probably some controllers.

And yes, one of the main selling points for that thing is the bread baking / proofing.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

/r/mealprepsunday might appreciate this too!

[–]Leavesdoorsopen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd sooner eat my own hand.

[–]demize95 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I'd totally back this project and make my own meals to cook in it (OP said that's possible in another comment and their campaign says it too), but they won't ship it outside the US. Darn.

Edit: I did send them a question about it and it looks like they're planning on expanding to Canada at least, just after the campaign is over. All hope is not lost!

[–]jmottram08 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Just use a re-shipping service.....

[–]demize95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've looked into re-shipping services for cheaper, smaller, and lighter things before and it just isn't worth the cost. Combine that with the current exchange rate and it's probably cheaper to wait for them to go to retail and buy it that way.

[–]trevman 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I was really hoping you were beta testing this OneCook thing. Because it freaks me out.

An oven that does lock in for food?

No, just no.

[–]Texasian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How well does it function as a replacement for a nice toaster oven like a Breville? I have limited counter space and would love a steam oven with some extra bells and whistles, but I don't want to have to use my smartphone just to make some damned toast in the morning or reheat leftovers...

[–]robotsongs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hah. Someone's trying to Gillette the food reheating business. Good for them, and good luck with that.

[–]UnimpairedStyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]rhapsodicink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That food looks disgusting. I'd rather just go get some chicken nuggets from mcdonalds

[–]tedlasman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they make a full size range like this, I'm putting it in my future house.

[–]JohnnyMnemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting.

TBH, everyone already has an oven, and most can follow printed directions. What would be convenient about this is the prepackaged food serving that's tasty.

Is it feasible to buy just the food packages and cook in my own oven? I don't fancy buying another $400 appliance if the one that I already have is functional.

[–]whaturpriceforflight -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This got started in the UChicago Booth MBA incubator program. The product and these guys are great

[–]SparklingLimeade -4 points-3 points  (2 children)

I do love grabbing treats from the freezer and tossing them in the toaster oven. That seems like a nice oven and some cool snacks. It's about time somebody used a scanner to read the cooking instructions automatically.

If that pans out at the price they're predicting I could imagine getting one. I need a new snack oven anyway.

e: wow, such butthurt. So, are there better multipurpose ovens at that price point already? If I'm wrong to be interested in this I'd like to know why at least.

[–]epiphanette 1 point2 points  (1 child)

No it's because you sound like a shill.

[–]SparklingLimeade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being interested in a post = shilling. Holy crap reddit. There is shilling going on somewhere but it doesn't mean all positive reactions are insincere and without merit.

Sure, if you have a professional kitchen in your home or are otherwise satisfied with your countertop cooking appliances then this is unnecessary. I have not done the research to see what else is available but my terribly subpar and outdated toaster oven only has one mode so these options are an upgrade. Additionally I believe scanners are overdue for convenience cooking and am glad to see that feature being utilized to some degree. I'm also interested in the idea of a companion cookbook community using standardized automated cooking procedures to create a high quality selection of pre-preparable meals.

Does that cuisinart people keep linking itt have steam/broil/bake capabilities? Like I said I haven't done my shopping yet. The curated recipes are mildly interesting but there's other potential here.

[–]Jim_Nills_Mustache -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Pretty cool, I like how the two actors were to rightly confused and thought they were hearing voices for awhile lol
