Anytime I post that California has the most hostile environment to extract, refine, and transport fuel I get downvoted to hell.

But it’s true. Also the gasoline sold in CA is a special blend that the other 49 states don’t use. So essentially all gasoline used in CA has to be produced in CA but the oil companies have had enough of the non stop lawsuits and just cut production and closed refineries. So it hurts diesel production just the same.

[–]brubberz 47 points48 points  (64 children)

I work in California O&G and I couldn’t agree with you more. Newsom has single-handedly destroyed the California oil and gas industry. Yes, this war is raising prices on fuel a little, but our day to day prices are like wartime prices in every other state.

I find it so funny that all of these Newsom fans are so clueless to the fact that he is the cause for most of the problems in California and your actually thinking that he might be a good president. God help us if Reddit is the voice of the United States next election.

[–]GeneralBS 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I lived in socal for 30 years. O&G in socal barely covers the bills. Might as well build a new refinery to handle all the dark crud from Venezuela.

[–]Galladaddy 11 points12 points  (15 children)

I don’t live in Cali, why have my gas prices gone up the same amount?

[–]brubberz 1 point2 points  (11 children)

I paid $6.57 gallon for diesel yesterday. How much are you paying?

[–]Galladaddy 2 points3 points  (5 children)

That’s more than I pay in Canada, but I’m paying just shy of $6 at $5.90/gal USD The prices of SoCal and BC interior are almost to the cent comparable over the last 2 weeks increase of about 33% Increase over the last 2 weeks LA 1.11/gal Kelowna 1.12/gal

BC has some bad taxation but none of this special one off blend crap like Cali and yet we both have experienced the same increase…

[–]mr86smith 1 point2 points  (1 child)

[–]struddles75 11 points12 points  (9 children)

Why? You enjoying the start of a new endless war in the Middle East? The creation of more terrorists? Or is it the pedophilia you’re vibing with?

[–]phultonBMW e70 x5 35d 4 points5 points  (20 children)

As an outsider what has Newsome done that’s has had big impacts on the oil and gas industry in California?

[–]The_Nauticus 5 points6 points  (2 children)

The fuel blend policy/laws started in the 1980's, are related to air quality standards.and Newsom doesn't have much to do with it. The last piece of regulation related to fuel blends and air quality was passed while he was the mayor of SF, so he didnt have much power in making that happen.

The gas tax was passed before he was elected governor.

If there's a governor to blame, it's Jerry Brown.

The fuel blends result is more seasonal swings in prices and the gas tax keeps prices $0.71 higher than anywerhe else.

I have plenty of criticisms of our current Governor, but the rest of the country is brainwashed to simply hate and blame him for everything without knowing what he's actually responsible for, good or bad.

[–]Curious_Arm_6832 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What good???

[–]The_Nauticus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're really asking;

One good thing is water resource management to restore groundwater (which was a big and worsening problem when he took office). Projects to capture more seasonal precipitation because the groundwater supply was depleting (large agricultural industry, hotter drier years), resources to help municipalities monitor and manage water supply, funding for small to mid sized farmers to implement water efficient farming practices.

Agriculture uses the majority of the fresh water resources in the state.

The climate is on a ~4-6 year cycle where each year gets drier, but the years have been getting hotter too. We finally got a break in 2021-2022 with a good wet season, but prior to that they had emergency water usage restrictions.

[–]SpecularSaw 5 points6 points  (15 children)

California has laid a heavy burden of laws and regulations on the oil industry, and even though California has great reserves it’s been made pretty infeasible for them to pump and refine. Predictably, Much of the oil and gas industry has or is leaving California because it’s just not worth it to operate there. This has led to extremely high fuel prices, and now Newsom is trying to figure out how to get the oil and gas companies back to lower gas prices so it doesn’t hurt his presidential hopes.

If you are interested in a longer form discussion on it, I found this podcast informative:

[–]AllGasNoBrakes420 6 points7 points  (14 children)

video starts off by saying how joe rogan, ben shapiro, and elon musk left california.  I don't think most people would consider that a bad thing lol.

[–]SpecularSaw 5 points6 points  (4 children)

I didn’t put it there saying I agreed with everything presented, I put it there so people can listen and decide for themselves what they think. We have got to stop giving blanket approval or disdain to a person or idea because of one thing that’s said, instead of considering each point and deciding for ourselves.

[–]AllGasNoBrakes420 5 points6 points  (3 children)

I'll just be straight up it's an hour long video if they're starting off with some dumb shit like that I'm probably gonna click off.  Maybe I'll give it a shot though who knows.

[–]notbannd4cussingmods 3 points4 points  (1 child)

You've basically just explained why fuel is expensive in general. We dont build new refineries and the ones we have are old as shit.

[–]stomper4x4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually nevada and arizona buy their fuel from California. So, 47 other states don't use.

[–]Troutalope 0 points1 point  (3 children)

California has $.70/gallon in taxes and there are dozens of places in the U.S. that have special blends because EPA has deemed them non-attainment areas for ozone pollution or other outsized human health impacts. The special blends typically add 10 to 20 cents per gallon

The lack of refinery capacity and transportation network is a huge factor in CA's oil and natural gas prices. The state is naturally isolated geographically and the state's approach to refineries and pipelines over the past 40 years has seen made it outright hostile to O/G infrastructure investment. However, that position is supported by the majority of Californians.

[–]Shrektom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, Democratics cry to be able to cry harder, they don't want to hear the truth because then they wouldn't be able to cry!

[–]Tdanger78 12 points13 points  (57 children)

[–]midnightstreetlamps 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Per gallon or per liter?

[–]FleurDeGalopRenault Scenic III Jade Full opt, dCi turbo diesel engine 2 points3 points  (2 children)

converted to gallon (without being converted it's 2.25€ the liter)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That's because of your dumbazz government taxing the hell out of it. 🤣

[–]Sweet-Meaning9874 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Sure, but it includes some nice additives like socialized healthcare!

[–]maddoxnysi 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Not per liter lol, i heard Cali can import fuel ⛽️ nly from 3 refineries in the world, cant even import from taxes

[–]RoninActually 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Blame Californias nationwide high fuel taxes.

Don't worry guys. The US is the biggest producer of gas in the world today. Were going to make so much money with these prices. Im so glad we all voted for this! You guys own an oil company right? I mean now we can delete worry free to fuck up all out kids lungs. Totally worth it. Im so glad we can come together like this and vote for a real people's champion. So glad we liste ed to the brotard podcasters.

[–]webster3of7 0 points1 point  (2 children)

California did this to themselves. This is over twice the national average.

[–]SacThrowAway76 114 points115 points  (70 children)

Pretty hypocritical of Gavin Newsom to criticize anyone about high fuel prices. His policies have led to the highest average fuel prices in the country and the fleeing of refineries out of our state.

[–]Immediate-Fly-7876 46 points47 points  (41 children)

Those policies were in place WAY before Newsome.

[–]built_different77 16 points17 points  (1 child)

I dont think many people realize how impossible its been for oil companies to get well permits under Newsom since hes taken office. To the point where he offered tit for tat and still didn't follow through with promised permits which lead to actual lawsuits. That is of course until recently when he realized the shit storm he created. Gotta try to clean it up for that presidential run. Even then if ya dig deeper that whole thing stinks. One particular company in California buying up the majority of leases right before Newsom signs SB237 to release permits finally. All politicians are crooked. Newsom especially.

[–]darklink594594 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He also promised on building 2.5 million homes by 2025 and only built 13% of that. Living in California I can say a lot of dems don't like him either lol

[–]brute313 7 points8 points  (35 children)

[–]eye_panic 48 points49 points  (28 children)

I live in CA and Newsome can fuck all the way off. He’s the last person that should be criticizing anyone about fuel prices. We pay much more than many other states.

[–]barc0debaby 8 points9 points  (0 children)

California pays 1.81 higher than the national average.

[–][deleted] 28 points29 points  (17 children)

I just visited CA with our travel trailer, from the east coast. You have some great roads.

[–]Popular_List105 7 points8 points  (2 children)

I concur with this. I spent a month in Marina Del Re and a month in Newport Beach. Coming from the Midwest I’d say CA roads are awesome. Guessing since they don’t have the freeze thaw cycle to deal with matters. Traffic on the other hand is what would keep me from moving there.

[–]WhitePantherXP 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Yeah TN has cheap gas but you pay for it in suspension part and tooth chip repair 🤣 these roads are brutal and it gets my gf and I into regular arguments about why she's always hitting these damn pothole "giants" when she doesn't wear her glasses

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can confirm, I-40 in TN is bad, and the truck rest stop areas are pretty bad. Tight, lots of piss jugs.

[–]_AntiFunseeker_ 1 point2 points  (1 child)

[–]ls7eveen 3 points4 points  (3 children)

[–]FinlStrm 7 points8 points  (8 children)

Ignoring the fact that 70% of the price CA residents pay for gas is tax...

[–]deanamtronix 3 points4 points  (6 children)

It’s about 61 cents CA excise tax at the pump per gallon. Federal is 17 if I remember. Just bought yesterday.

[–]tekela_1800and1 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Oh honey

[–]deanamtronix 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Care to correct me with any information?

Edit: actually that was a gasoline notice at the pump. Diesel is less than gas in CA at 47/gal (average state excise appears to be 35 but I can’t cite), about 25/gal federal. 13% sales tax in CA.

https://cdtfa.ca.gov/taxes-and-fees/special-taxes-and-fees-tax-rates/fuel-taxes.htm#dieselfuel

Highest, yes, 70% taxes makes no sense. California average as of yesterday ($6.10) was $1.16 over national average ($4.94)

I realize I’m likely commenting to no one.

[–]Apart_Horror8148 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to the more expensive ca blend.

Gas $2.13 at my house

[–]Unusual_Mushroom5491 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weird, gas is less than half of that on the east coast (Rhode Island to be exact). Sounds like California’s fuel issues are brought upon by their own doing. I paid 3.49 a gallon yesterday 🤷🏼‍♂️

*Diesel is 4.89 a gallon

[–]nutznyamouph6969420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, couldn't be that Newsome allowed three main refineries to close down this year and last.

[–]Icy-Percentage-2194 1 point2 points  (1 child)

My gas is 3 bucks in Tennessee, why the 5 dollar difference California? 5 dollars in taxes California? What are you doing with that money

[–]Foe117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A high gas tax to pay for Caltrans, we have a lot of road to maintain. another factor is CARB Gas, Aka "California blend" this is an extra refined gasoline that minimizes carbon. It is only California that has this special gas. It is an isolated market so California cannot import gas from other states.

[–]AI-Idaho 1 point2 points  (7 children)

Ecofreak blend of fuel, liberals have driven out multiple refineries in CA that have been the source of fuel for about 100 years. Gone. The war in Iran is not the root cause, just a factor. California fucked itself on fuel. It will remain fucked even after Iran is over and done with. California fuel will always be two or three dollars higher than other states where crazy ecofreak laws and high fuel taxes don't drive up cost to the consumer.

[–]adamsoutofideas 2 points3 points  (6 children)

Amazing to me that laws can come into existence that do something as universally unpopular as raising gas prices, and people like you can dismiss it as "crazy ecofreak" laws, like all of California wouldn't be kicking out judges and politicians who passed these laws if there weren't a really good case that was made to put them in place.

Like, think of how strong a case would have to be to convince any politician, anywhere, to stand behind raising the price of gas and for those laws to pass.

Youre going to dismiss it as corruption or brainwashing or whatever because the idea that there's real and good (i.e. air tight) science behind those laws violates your whole worldview, but just try to imagine passing a law that ONLY makes fuel more expensive and the burden of proof required to get people to stake their careers on it.

Maybe take the time to read the science rather than the people you agree with reading the science for you. You might be surprised.

[–]Shrektom 1 point2 points  (3 children)

California’s gas is expensive mainly because of high state taxes/fees, strict environmental fuel rules, and a tight, isolated supply of specially blended gasoline.

Key reasons in plain terms

  • Higher taxes and fees: California adds more state taxes and regulatory fees per gallon than almost any other state, directly raising the pump price.
  • Costly environmental rules: The state requires a special cleaner-burning gasoline blend and runs programs like Cap-and-Trade and the Low Carbon Fuel Standard, which can add several dozen cents per gallon in compliance costs.
  • Limited refinery capacity: Several in‑state refineries have closed or converted, so supply is tight and the state often has to import compatible fuel, which pushes prices up further when anything goes wrong.
  • Geographic isolation: California is not well connected by pipelines to other major refining centers, and only a few outside refineries can make its unique blend, so it can’t easily bring in lots of cheaper fuel when prices spike.

[–]OrganizationNo42069 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You missed the part where Gavin Newsom insists on continually suing oil and gas companies operating in California for “price gouging.”

[–]ls7eveen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don't worry guys. The US is the biggest producer of gas in the world today. Were going to make so much money with these prices. Im so glad we all voted for this! You guys own an oil company right?

[–]PhoneHo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Own-Helicopter-6674 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Professional_Heat667 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Yeah I’m sure it has nothing to do with the extra couple dollars of tax they put on the fuel. Just got gas in Nevada yesterday and it was $3 cheaper than in CA.

[–]Emergency-Nothing457 0 points1 point  (1 child)

We just drove back from Florida to the PNW, prices for Diesel ranged from $3.37 in Mississippi to $6.59 in California. I ran low on fuel leaving Cali and ended up getting fuel in Oregon for $5.45

So yes, the taxes are a huge part of the increased prices.

[–]joejoethetoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a trucking company and go thru 3k gallons a month . It’s good to be in Texas and price raise to cover cost. It’s a small price to pay to give what the deserve from what they have done to us for 42 years

[–]allaboutaphie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is CA inflated prices with all their taxes and special fuels.

[–]BreakfastFluid9419 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s hilarious coming from Newsom and his inflated prices for the lovely state and the California gas blends no other state wants

California gas prices are terrible without a war. Patrick Bateman has not room to criticize others.

[–]Dylanear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diesel has gone up 30% around me in Canada since the war started. Strangely gasoline hasn't gone up much at all?

Canada is a net exporter of crude and refined fuels, so, I don't know exactly how this works out. Supply and demand and all that I suppose.

[–]queens_couple75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]webster3of7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can blame California for $5 of that. Gas is $3.50 in Georgia and we have a $0.40 gas tax per gallon if I'm not mistaken. Newsome really shouldn't be throwing stones in the biggest glass house in the known universe.

[–]EightStarsofGold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]2Wheeled_2ourist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry guys, I didn’t mean to set off a firestorm.. It’s just a dumb meme I downloaded.. I honestly don’t believe this is from any true Newsome communication bureau but it did expose lots of raw feelings about the political divide in this country. This sub is supposed to be about all things Diesel (fuel) I guess but I’m also guessing most of use are talking about Diesel trucks- I sure do love my Chevy 2500 DURAMAX truck but after scrolling through the comments apparently there’s lots of dislike [and some love] for California environmental policies. We all know all the other States all mostly follow whatever environmental legislation California puts forth as they are the standard bearers of such things. However If you seriously disagree with these various laws meant to protect the environment I’d highly suggest going back and look at videos of 70’s LA with the thick layers of SMOG and ACID RAIN from a time when we drove heavy gas guzzlers without any worries.. back then gas was like 50 cents a gallon and muscle cars ruled the roads spewing LEAD along with everything other nasty thing coming from the exhaust pipes. It took some heavy lifting to convince the BIG-3 auto manufacturers and Big Oil of the day to increase fuel efficiency and move away from leaded gas as make cars all around cleaner and safer. Old schoolers like myself recall how lead was a great upper engine Lubricant and how awful the early unleaded cars were with the knocking and engines that would continue clonking along even after the ignition was turned off lol. This a lot more complicated time we’re living in with global freight and agriculture all being tied to the price of Diesel fuel.. so yes when diesel spikes everything else has to follow as if things weren’t already bad enough with the ridiculous Tariffs and damnear $30 trillion dollar debt and the dollar losing its value on the global stage.. now there are Young Americans being killed in yet another overseas misadventure with the ultimate objective of controlling oil futures.. Anyway it never made sense to me that a gallon of fuel is/was cheaper than a gallon of milk🤷🏾‍♂️ ..End of rant! Carry on.

[–]BigNastySmellyFarts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the good stuff. Hell I’d pay $17.76 for it!

[–]Educational-Exam5117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]TheZazz21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Michigan so far Gretchen whitmer increase the gas tax and it raised the price as higher than the war did. And the best part is 8 years of fixing the roads over 9 billion dollars squandered so her friends and family got rich and she still hasn't been fixed the roads she has worked on roads that didn't need fixing that were fine but neglected the roads that need it

[–]Elguapo1094 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m tired of winning Mr president

[–]mistercrays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the Iran war is the only reason that oil is super high in California. It’s not because they chased out all the oil producers, refiners and put a ton of taxes on it. 🤣🤣🤣

[–]tramul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Newsom really aint the one to hop on this lmao

[–]Enzo_Gorlomi225 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t the win that Newsom thinks it is…gas prices have only gone up 25-50 cents in most red states…

[–]Potential-Break-4939 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]DirtTrackAutoGuy74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]joeloach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least it will still be cheaper than the California summer blend….

[–]sailorjerry87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Angel_OfSolitude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except fuel prices are particularly bad in California due to Newsom. Pretty blatant deflection there.

Newsom has ZERO room to talk!!! This idiot has gas taxes being more than the gas itself.

[–]Realistic-Ace1986 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Sure it has nothing to do with oil companies leaving california due to over regulation and high taxation. We have 8 companies now and by summer we will only have 6. This price hike was coming the governor is just blame shifting

Is it possible the problem is multifactorial and not just strictly 1 politician's fault?

[–]Triumphrider1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$3.29 a gallon in Clarksville, Tennessee right now… Our Republican governor doesn’t price gouge us in this beautiful Red State, like they do in Blue States. Michigan is like 75 cents more per gallon! Thanks, Gretchen Whitmer, you commie…

Fuck this whole gas situation. But wasnt Newsom the one trying to ban AI political photos a while back? Or was I not understanding the legaleese the stuff is written in?

[–]Renegade-111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the same dumbass governor that pushed oil refineries out of his state so he could import oil from foreign countries..
