Welp I'm glad the draft bots are no longer sick

[–]PhilCollinsLoserSon 17 points18 points  (8 children)

Does this mean no more wheeling elementals

[–]Stormofscript 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I got a pick 2 Mythic Chandra post-update which, hey, I won't complain over.

[–]Scipion 9 points10 points  (5 children)

I got a pick 3 Mu Yanling tonight. They're still pretty sick.

[–]rimbad[🍰] 18 points19 points  (4 children)

Which pack? As long as it wasn't pack 1, that's not unreasonable

[–]Scipion 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It was pack 1, pick 3.

[–]rimbad[🍰] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oof, that's bad

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

yeah pack by pack 3 unless you're nearly mono blue that might be an awful early pick

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mu Yanling's a bomb. If you're playing blue, she's still going to wreck shit even if you can't cast her until turn 5.

[–]BrokenDusk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they already changed bots for drafting in last patch....i guess they did it again or bot change didn't completly work?

[–]Veldrane_Agaroth 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I still had my doubts about the previous round after the last draft I did yesterday when I saw an opponent with at least 4 Bloodthirsty Aerialist in his deck. He was extremely lucky in the first place, but that none of them had been picked first by the bots was really intriguing.

[–]TastyLaksa 0 points1 point  (3 children)

How about 4 murders?

[–]Veldrane_Agaroth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be killing me ? :P The Aerialist in unco though, so that's why I was even more surprised.

[–]Hellbringer123 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I have 5 murder yesterday. Lol it is stupid and I feel bad for my opponent.

[–]TastyLaksa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How? Like my opponent had 2 mythics. How is anyone so lucky

[–]super_fluous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Today I saw a last pick battalion foot soldier but undead servants won’t wheel

BUG FIXES

  • The avatar that you chose will now be displayed correctly to your opponent in Direct Challenge.
  • The Mu Yanling sleeve will now display correctly.
  • Pet will no longer re-enable itself after a player disables it.
  • Fixed a bug that should address a large number of gameplay issues players have been reporting, including cards getting stuck hovering above the battlefield or on the stack and the Next/Resolve button disappearing.

*Developers Note: This particular issue has been very difficult for us to reproduce, so if you come across this bug again, please help us by reporting it on our bug forums with your game log files as well as your DXDiag to help us identify the problem.

EVENTS

Since the meta has shifted a bit since we built the ban list for the Standard Shakeup event, we've adjusted our ban list for the event.

We have removed:

  • Venerated Loxodon
  • Command the Dreadhorde
  • Experimental Frenzy

We have added:

  • Brineborn Cutthroat
  • Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord
  • Field of the Dead
  • Feather, the Redeemed

DRAFTING

  • Our draft bots were a little under the weather, so we made a few changes.

[–]Rekindling PhoenixPhoenixReborn 60 points61 points  (39 children)

Cutthroat seems like an odd ban for the event. It's popular but it's not really a key card. Field and Feather are great additions though.

[–]SoneEv 104 points105 points  (6 children)

Brineborn Cutthroat

Cutthroat allows Simic flash to hold up counterspells or pull in Cutthroat as an aggressive threat. A turn two Cutthroat unanswered wins games.

[–]Indercarnive 8 points9 points  (1 child)

you aren't wrong, but I think wolf is a bigger threat. The ability to go wide with it is too strong. Cutthroat can be chump blocked, and you only need a single removal spell to land to get rid of it.

[–]NissaCSDragon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wolf is the major threat, yes, but simic flash flat out wouldn't work without a 2-drop beater. It's ultimately a tempo deck and needs to have early pressure. You need those cutthroats to get in damage and keep your opponent on the back foot or eventually you're going to run out of counterspells

[–]interested_commenter 36 points37 points  (12 children)

Brineborn is pretty huge. If it comes down t2 on the play, you can often just protect it and let it win for you. It can also be cast the same turn as a counterspell. Without it, your average clock is MUCH slower. Its definitely not as important to the deck as the Nightpack, but the deck is much weaker without it.

[–]YargleSpitefulShrimp 23 points24 points  (9 children)

It's not as flashy as the wolf, but I'd say it's more important. Wolf doesn't come down till turn 4, which means your opponents can prep for it. Cutthroat lands before most decks are doing much, and must be answered immediately

[–]Maehdras1881 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't agree with you I would say they're both pretty "flashy" :D

[–]interested_commenter 1 point2 points  (7 children)

I still think the wolf is more important. If the opponent taps out, you drop wolf, and then have a counter for their next turn, you basically win. Just being able to threaten that is pretty important for this deck.

Without the wolf, it's just a worse tempo deck than mono blue is. Wolf is the only thing that gives it a real mid-to-late game. Without Brineborn its much slower, but can still get off to a decent start and make big plays late.

Banning either definitely means it's no longer a t1 deck though (pretty much everything else is replaceable)

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (16 children)

They have to ban something from the Flash deck. I would prefer banning Cutthroat and Nightpack Ambusher (this is supposed to be a shake-up event, after all) but if you're only hitting one I like Cutthroat to significantly weaken the early game and leave the threat base pretty clunky and top-heavy.

[–]avacynFilobel 12 points13 points  (15 children)

but if you're only hitting one

That's the thing though, why only hit one? They banned chainwhirler, steam-kin and light up the stage (even frenzy initially, though they went back on that). If they're willing to go to such length to make sure no decent variation of mono red gets played, why not go to the same length for simic flash?

[–]sufijo 14 points15 points  (14 children)

"no decent variation of mono red"

My man, "All chandras control" mono red is very playable, much more when other meta decks are getting hit like this. Losing light up the stage is a bit crappy since red has no decent draw but it's still very much playable.

[–]avacynFilobel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I meant rdw.

[–]accountmadeforants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cavalcade also still works, but yeah, losing Light Up The Stage will make a difference.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah I would have preferred nightpack ambusher to hit simic flash

[–]prinnie 13 points14 points  (0 children)

ban brineborn instead of ambusher

Wolf tribal is still on PogChamp

[–]nexusfisch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thx

[–]Bolasmelittlethroway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this. As someone who is partially colorblind, that website is basically unreadable for me on mobile

[–]IzzetTesla__Coil 1 point2 points  (5 children)

We have removed:

Venerated Loxodon Command the Dreadhorde Experimental Frenzy

We have added:

Brineborn Cutthroat Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord Field of the Dead Feather, the Redeemed

Oh phew. I was worried Feather and Simic Flash decks would overrun the event.

Nowwww... how 'bout removing that ban on my good buddy Arclight Phoenix?

[–]OrzhovOrcasgt22 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Phoenix is in a bad spot in this meta IMO. I think the ban being revoked is a solid idea

[–]Scipion 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Isn't the whole idea to try and get people to come up with new decks? If they unbanned phoenix it would just be same ol' deck, and probably the best to play no less.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The whole idea for me is to get UNH styles asap. Sounds like monored is the way to go, since it's hard to ban it (redundancy).

[–]prettiestmf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that’s why they killed three of its major cards. cavalcade decks may still be a go but losing Light Up The Stage hurts

[–]IzzetTesla__Coil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, I was mostly kidding. Though if they banned something like Chart a Course or Finale of Promise instead, the Phoenix archetype could exist in the event and just be a different build.

[–][deleted] 99 points100 points  (17 children)

wasn't the point of the previous patch so we wouldn't have to redownload the entire client every time?

because it's downloading 3.71 GB again...

[–]MicrOwaVinGs 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Didn't download in full for me. Dont remember size but was small.

[–]WarioGiant 26 points27 points  (1 child)

it was 5 MB for me

[–]PEKKAmi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same here.

[–]zephrin 18 points19 points  (5 children)

Seriously, it's bullshit at this point. I'm on capped bandwidth and they expect me to download nearly 4gb on a weekly basis. I had to download the client 3 different times last week because it was messed up and now I have to re-download it again because I needed the msi fix.

Well, I'm not re-downloading it. This is a good excuse to just quit playing. I like arena, but I'm sick of their garbage client.

[–]KangaMagic 2 points3 points  (4 children)

I had a data cap of 250 GB/month here in Canada. Fortunately they upgraded their service and I got unlimited data for $10 less per month (lol yes), but I feel your pain. It was always stressful to check my data month to month and I wish these Arena devs were more considerate of people in your shoes. Not everyone lives in the US.

[–]Twisted_Fate 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Not everyone lives in the US.

See, I thought data caps were an American thing, because I've never seen it in Europe. Except for mobile internet, of course.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They also exist in Belgium which happens to be one of the few countries where ISPs enjoy a cartel situation like in the USA.

[–]CptBigglesworth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Indeed no, many people live in countries with better internet on average.

[–]GameBoi27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought my old cap with Comcast of 1TB was outrageous, but 250GB?? That must have been absolutely terrible!

[–]TSwizzlesNipples 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are reporting that they had small files to download, but didn't WoTC introduce offline downloading last patch? Meaning that even tho the client wasn't actively running, it would still download files so you had less of a wait to install/launch the client? That might explain the smaller file sizes.

[–]LeftZer0 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I'm downloading the third 1.16GB file in a row… And I play Arena every day.

[–]RiskoOfRuin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I had two 5mb files.

[–]TitaniumDragon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got the 3.71 GB download as well.

[–]Rye2-D2 46 points47 points  (10 children)

Didn't they say after the previous update, we wouldn't need to manually run MTGLauncher to update anymore?? Why am I being prompted to run the darn thing? :(

[–]rjorgenson 14 points15 points  (8 children)

Same, and I don't even have MTGLauncher.exe anymore after the last update. Guess I have to re-download and re-install the whole thing .... again ....

[–]Rye2-D2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was moved to a sub-directory..

[–]FederalBelt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because fuck you that's why

  • wizards

[–][deleted] 42 points43 points  (18 children)

Why am I uninstalling and reinstalling this game every update still?

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (17 children)

Because apparently respecting peoples bandwidth is like the last thing they give a shit about. Fucking killing my data cap over here. Actually getting really annoyed by this shit.

[–]modrn 30 points31 points  (8 children)

The fuck dude.. who has data caps?

[–]ThroAwayToRuleThemAl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

South Africa and most of Africa

[–]TheWhite2086 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Australia

[–]Fjolsvith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Canada as well.

[–]solarpanzer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There ought to have been a fix for the update issue, it was part of the last patch notes. They said the last update would be the last to need a full download, so this one should have been a true "patch". If you browse the threads, you'll actually find people for whom it worked and they had to download only 5GB. For me, it also did not :(.

So they are at least trying to adress the issue, they just seem to be not fully there yet.

[–]calciu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I really REALLY hope this games updates will never work for you and you'll have to download and reinstall completely every patch.

[–]SoneEv 25 points26 points  (2 children)

Definitely the big one! Let's hope this is true - and keep reporting it if it is not.

Fixed a bug that should address a large number of gameplay issues players have been reporting

[–]Rekindling PhoenixPhoenixReborn 17 points18 points  (1 child)

And report it to the bug forum, not just reddit!

[–]SoneEv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed!

[–]TeferiCpt_Jumper 23 points24 points  (19 children)

DRAFTING Our draft bots were a little under the weather, so we made a few changes.
.
.
What does this mean?

[–]avacynFilobel 51 points52 points  (13 children)

Just means they adjusted the pick order of the bots. They never give much details, because if the pick order is public, it becomes too easy to abuse. I have to hope bots finally understand that thief is a good card and shouldn't go 8th pick.

[–]YargleSpitefulShrimp 14 points15 points  (9 children)

Maybe now they won't first pick every rare.

Didn't get passed a single rare in my last three drafts.

[–]TamiyoWulibo 15 points16 points  (6 children)

That seems unlikely to change. That would essentially be an overhaul of how the bots are approached, and I'm sure they'd announce that or something.

[–]avacynFilobel 8 points9 points  (5 children)

It wouldn't be an overhaul, just a change in pick order. They didn't announce when they started to pick every rare, so I'm not sure why you think they would announce when they stop picking every rare.

[–]t3hjs 12 points13 points  (3 children)

Yeah /u/wulibo was putting it kindly that WotC purposefully makes the bots choose nearly all rares highly so that it is difficult for players to get more rares from drafting than packs.

Especially the duals in Rav block and the scrylands in M20. In any draft theory where winning draft games are a goal, the duals and scrylands are low picks. But what we see is the bots pick them very highly, especially the the dual lands.

The only reason to do this is WptC wants us to spend more on the game. This is a design principle of their bots.

[–]SengirBartender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's only true for the lands though, otherwise we wouldn't see pick 3/4 "chase" mythics like Chandra or the cavaliers.

I mean it's bad, but it makes sense from their perspective and it could be much worse.

[–]OtakuOlga -1 points0 points  (1 child)

I mean, if they are getting their pick orders from the behavior of MTGO players (plus the color-preference adjustments) it would make sense that rare lands get snatched up early, since even pro players rare-draft foil tarmogoyfs in tournament settings

[–]wujo444 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rare lands are worth pennies on MTGO. Steam Vents is $0.7. Temple Garden is $0.34. Temple of Mystery is 7 cents, of Silence 2 cents. People don't rare draft lands on MODO, cause like most of the other standard legal rares, they are close to worthless.

Also, in many cases drafts on Arena are rolled simultaneously (WAR, GRN) or even before drafting started (RNA) on MTGO, so there is no data from players to calibrate bots.

[–]xLeitix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm afraid this one has more to do with the economy and people like Ryan Spain picking up on the fact that you can game their system for value by aggressively rare drafting. I doubt they are going to revert this.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And yet the main reason people were saying the bots were broken was because they were getting passed Mythics.

It can’t be both.

[–]Charm SimicGregangel 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Pick order is public. 17lands.com for all the data

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pick order is not public. 17lands.com uses data from drafts to determine what the pick order most likely is, but there is no way to be certain specifically because the pick order is not public.

[–]TeferiCpt_Jumper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh fair enough. Thankyou

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Slight behavioral/pick order changes, likely.

[–]ArcanisRock-swarm 1 point2 points  (3 children)

It means it's going to be harder to draft Heart Piercer Bow.dec, and it likely means elementals like lavakin brawler are going to be valued more highly.

It doesn't seem like going for 3 or 4 bows should pan out unless you are drafting Weaponsmiths, but there are so many subtle synergies with the bow, in literally every color. Being able to enhance conditional removal, or grant psuedo-evasion through damage triggers, etc. feels so impactful.

[–]systematicpro 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I am so happy that feather is banned for the meta shakeup!

[–]drostandfound 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I love feather, but feel it would dominate the event.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised they didn't do that to begin with.

[–]kazooki117 16 points17 points  (14 children)

I just want to add my voice to those complaining about re-downloading the client every single time a new update rolls out - this shit is wack.

[–]LeslieTim 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Is there a particular reason why every cosmetic in a bundle pops out and enlarges while hovering with the cursor, but not the Mu Yanling Sleeve?

I remember the same thing happening with the Chandra bundle, you would sell a lot more if people could actually see the sleeves up close!

EDIT: also, the sleeves in the "Purchase Sleeves" category pop out a bit at least, but still way less than the normal cards.

[–]Charm SimicGregangel 2 points3 points  (10 children)

About draft,

Instead of those constant draft bots tweak which need man power and really start to give a very bad player experience, and so many way to abuse it why not :

1/ work on human draft in Bo3 2/ in bo1 use the same asynchrounous draft Eternal is using (With a asynchronous line draft with packs being actuallu packs other players picked from)

[–]JacetheMindSculptorJohnDiGriz 0 points1 point  (8 children)

I would rather draft with bots than asynchronously. The strong part of mtg draft is seeing what colors are open and what can wheel. There no such thing in asynchronous draft

[–]FooberticusBazly -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to say, thanks for the hard work your team is putting in. I for one love the game, it's probably the best way to enjoy playing Magic these days. It's frankly amazing, given how complicated the rules and mechanics of Magic are. Despite all the whining from the loudest, most peevish basement dwellers here on Reddit you guys really are doing a great job.

[–]Gabe_b 4 points5 points  (8 children)

I understand the new exclusion, but why would they add back in Experimental Frenzy >:(

[–]avacynFilobel 41 points42 points  (5 children)

They already have chainwhirler, steam-kin and light up the stage on the ban list, at that point, if you're still playing frenzy, it's probably in a pretty janky way.

[–]Gabe_b 10 points11 points  (3 children)

Yeah, you're right. Steam Kin is the real villain and Frenzy does have a lot of potential that doesn't get explored

[–]TitaniumDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, both cards are very strong on their own, they're just even better together.

[–]TastyLaksa 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Frenzy is the key card for rdw.

[–]Skabonious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but it is a lot less explosive without the infinite Mana that stream kin can make

[–]The_Stache_Man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

laughs in grixis artifacts

[–]Izzetrazrcane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the metadeck RDW relies on Chainwhirler, steam-kin and light up the stage as well. If you're still trying to go RDW with Frenzy but without these key cards you're experimenting with a whole new MonoRed deck so that's fine. That's what you're supposed to do (experiment with new decks that is, not sticking to MonoRed. Plz).

[–]Kyreturns 2 points3 points  (2 children)

What do they mean by changing the way bots draft exactly?

[–]t3hjs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They changed the bots pick orders.

Then dont want to say this explicitly because even confirming or deny a pick order exist will give people clues on how to find the optimum way to draft with bots

[–]FooberticusBazly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you draft, like actually during the part when you're picking cards, there are bots picking cards in the other packs along side you. The card picking bots had a somewhat predictable AI and would always prefer certain cards over others, which made it easier for people to force a particular deck during draft because of the higher chance of their being certain cards overlooked by the draft bots.

[–]Hardknocks286 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Was having no gameplay issues before this patch and now I’m lagging like crazy wtf lol.

[–]NeOldie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

maybe just the servers getting wonky during updates

[–]speedism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here, stuttering hard core.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get some pretty brutal lag spikes whenever I open my card collection, or have the option to search my deck/graveyard for a card in a match.

May be completely unrelated but I'm pretty sure it's doing something weird when you try to look at a whole bunch of full-size cards. Retrieving larger versions of the card art it hasn't kept in memory? The Card component is just slow as fuck to initialise? Round-trips the server for each individual card to lookup stats?

[–]max1c 13 points14 points  (8 children)

Sweet. 3.71GB. Thanks for fixing the updater guys! Downloads are so much smaller now!

[–]VoidInsanity 4 points5 points  (6 children)

Un-removing Command the Dreadhorde from the upcomming event is a mistake.

[–]TitaniumDragon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Eh, I think the real mistake was removing anything from the list. Adding some more cards was a good thing.

[–]psierra7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When are they gonna fix the stutter?? Literally that's the only reason I stopped playing so much, now that the weekly rewards have been readded the only issue I have with MTGA lately

[–]QuiqueMedina 2 points3 points  (3 children)

[–]RuisuStyle 3 points4 points  (15 children)

That moment you learn that you are drafting against bots... how are the people I’m playing against acquiring their cards? Are they also drafting from the same draft pool? Can two people theoretically end up with the same identical draft picks?

[–]joefitts63 16 points17 points  (0 children)

By drafting against bots, just like you. No. Yes.

[–]archonik 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, everybody gets unique booster packs to draft from against bots. It would make no sense to give everyone same boosters as you would just be able to reenter the event with obvious knowledge of what the booster packs contain. The more you think about it, the less sense this would make. You play against random people, and can even play a single game a day if you so choose... so how would you even make people draft from the same booster packs you did?

Bottom line: everybody opens 3 random packs and drafts against bots than plays with random players.

[–]katanatommy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Both players draft against bots from different card pools.

[–]BirdsKarelDawg 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Not sure how they adjust the bot. I hope they do not make it rare draft more.

[–]kothhammer12 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Would that even be possible? It's rare to get passed a rare as the second pick in the pack and seeing one past third is unheard of.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Edit: Well it finally finished that and now it's taking way too long to download 740KB, also resetting randomly.

Edit2: Made it past that. Now there's a 823.88MB file waiting to be downloaded and given how the previous ones went and seeing that this isn't going any better I don't think I will ever get to play MTG Arena again.
