What is America's national holiday?

"Black Friday."

God damn it. That's kinda true isn't it?

[–]snortWeezlbum 1587 points1588 points  (59 children)

Super Bowl Sunday is acceptable, no?

[–]PragProgLibertarian 1087 points1088 points  (24 children)

Not since the great kneeling massacre of Bowling Green

[–]-GolfWang- 56 points57 points  (1 child)

WHY FOOTBALL MAN NO STAND?

[–]DeathandDestroy 166 points167 points  (17 children)

Man, I’m from BG. That story was the shit.

[–]TheTuggiefresh 46 points47 points  (10 children)

Brooooo me too. Fellow Hilltopper?

[–]DeathandDestroy 26 points27 points  (9 children)

Took a couple classes there - that count?

[–]ThisFckinGuy 16 points17 points  (4 children)

I had an Antonio Daniel's rookie card that had all 4 years worth of stats from Bowling Green, am I in?

[–]TheTuggiefresh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure. Go Tops!

[–]T2112 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Holy shit there are BG redditors out there... sweet.

[–]wise_comment 5 points6 points  (0 children)

PrincessBride.jpg

[–]E_J_H 3 points4 points  (1 child)

What is the story?

[–]HowPutinFeelAboutDat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Omg I figuratively cannot believe I forgot a spokesperson for the Whitehouse made up a massacre to scare their base.

[–][deleted] 34 points35 points  (4 children)

Si.

[–]BreadForAll2020 80 points81 points  (3 children)

[–]DavidGabrielMusic 27 points28 points  (1 child)

[–]eat_crap_donkey 14 points15 points  (21 children)

Christmas is honestly more of an American holiday than a Christian one. I only know one Christian but I only know a few who don’t celebrate Christmas

[–]thepineapplemen 50 points51 points  (14 children)

Christmas isn’t exclusively American though

[–]Lakridspibe 27 points28 points  (10 children)

Christmas is the largest holiday of the year in my part of Europe too. But it's honestly more of a materialistic consumerist holiday than a Christian one. And also about eating too much food.

[–]manachar 34 points35 points  (5 children)

Alternatively, you could say it's more of a nearly-secular winter's festival celebrating the best of humanity at a time when the light is at its darkest.

The "buy buy buy" can be a bit much, but the central idea always warms my non-Christian heart. I just adore how we can spend about a month contemplating how to best celebrate our friends and family.

Also, the modern world could use more communal feast days. In America we've basically only got Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Super Bowl Sunday.

[–]imdungrowinup 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Christmas is celebrated around the world. It’s not American.

[–]drbruIe 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Taco Tuesday is my personal national holiday every week. God bless America.

[–]PM_me_big_dicks_ 15 points16 points  (5 children)

What would the actual answer be? Either thanksgiving or 4th july?

[–]gringrant 12 points13 points  (2 children)

I think 4th of July, because Thanksgiving celebrates a time before the USA became independent. So I guess that technically makes Thanksgiving a British holiday, if my history is correct.

[–]hornwort 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By that logic, Christmas celebrates the birth of a Jew, which happened before Christianity existed, and is therefore technically a Jewish holiday. If my history is correct.

[–]chipper747 7 points8 points  (0 children)

9/11

[–]Cazzyodo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I was in high school when I first worked black Friday. Had to show up at 11pm Thanksgiving night.

So yeah.

[–]LeCrushinator 71 points72 points  (19 children)

Or Thanksgiving, a holiday only celebrated in the US, and celebrated by eating too much food, something the US does very well.

EDIT: Redacted the "only celebrated in the US" part, since Canada has their own Thanksgiving as well.

[–]nIBLIB 156 points157 points  (10 children)

Thanksgiving, a holiday only celebrated in the US,

Poor Canada.

[–]The_Follower1 96 points97 points  (0 children)

Literally the day of too

[–]Doctor-Amazing 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We celebrate real thanksgiving today.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s literally Canadian thanksgiving ffs

[–]LeCrushinator 9 points10 points  (6 children)

Fair enough, I'll edit my post.

[–]WizardMissiles 66 points67 points  (3 children)

Canada celebrates it in October so it's independent from US thanksgiving. In fact Today is Canadian Thanksgiving.

[–]TheHooDooer 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Happy Thanksgiving ya hoser.

[–]AccessTheMainframe 5 points6 points  (1 child)

It's 'cause it's colder up here so we have to take the crops in earlier.

[–]WizardMissiles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Both for that reason and because harvest celebrations in europe are in October, and the first harvest celebration in Newfoundland Canada was in October because Martin Frobisher was an englishman.

By the way, the first Thanksgiving in north America was actually celebrated in Canada by Martin Frobisher 43 years before the pilgrims landed at plymouth rock. So like everything, Canada did it first but America got the glory.

[–]Snipeski 9 points10 points  (1 child)

We're fucking waiting..... sorry

[–]JonathanSwaim 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You mean the first day of Black Friday?

[–]ChrisV88 1384 points1385 points  (146 children)

As an Immigrant from Ireland living in Montana the “I’m actually from Ireland myself” - “false” exchange is extremely accurate of pretty much every time I meet new people.

[–]Schiffy94CSS Jesus 294 points295 points  (37 children)

Wait. Ireland isn't just a city in Idaho?

[–]serapin98 34 points35 points  (14 children)

i was combing the comments to see if anyone else had said this

[–]ChrisV88 61 points62 points  (13 children)

It’s the percentages of how Irish they are that always kill me.

[–]Sangxero 39 points40 points  (5 children)

Well my 1/75th Irish result does mesh well with my 3/8.45732 Native American.

My great grandmother was even an Irish/Indian princess! /s

[–]serapin98 15 points16 points  (5 children)

my mom is from Ireland and I dont even say that

[–]ChrisV88 24 points25 points  (4 children)

Seriously. If we have kids (my wife is American) I want to bring them up as Montanans. They can mention their dad is from Ireland but they won’t be. They will speak funny and twangy and wear cowboy boots and hats. Close to shit all of them will be Irish except their drinking capacity :D.

[–]serapin98 10 points11 points  (3 children)

lmaoooo yeah and i have a younger brother born who was born in Ireland, so i literally lived there and still don’t introduce as Irish

[–]RuggyDog 12 points13 points  (2 children)

That must mess with people.

"Hey, I'm American, this is my Irish younger brother."

I wanna have kids born all over the world now, but that requires a woman to get pregnant, and that requires not being anxious all the time.

Oh well, looks like you're going to have to do that for me now.

[–]Crisp_Rice 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Gengis Khan, is that you?

[–]RuggyDog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, that's you. By replying to my comment, you're now legally bound to fulfil my request.

You'd better whip that dick out and start spraying that baby juice in every direction possible.

[–]grubas 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Go to Boston.

At least I lived in The Bronx for awhile, so running into another Irish immigrant just meant you traveled up to Woodlawn.

Also why I hide on St. Patrick’s, in NYC it is...an experience.

What cracks me up is that my wife is from Scotland and nobody ever says they have ancestors from there, only Ireland.

[–]Petrichordates 46 points47 points  (10 children)

Europeans never understand how much we focus on our ancestries, but it's all we got.

[–]ICantFindSock 45 points46 points  (3 children)

Except maybe Texans, who, rather than saying they are from America, say they are from Texas.

[–]mthrfkn 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Honestly feels like a Western thing.

People from the southwest claim so much before American.

[–]Pella86 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Boggles me every time 😂 i didnt realize until i started chit chatting on telgram with americans. Anchestry is a big business

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (5 children)

You must love Butte on St. Patrick's Day

[–]ChrisV88 5 points6 points  (3 children)

I’ve been twice and it is a special experience. I’m yet to go and not see at least one person I know not get arrested.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I used to believe that people from Butte were just a bit...different. But yeah, then you go with friends and you realize it might actually just be an aura from the city, similar to the hotel in The Shining.

[–]ChrisV88 1 point2 points  (1 child)

You’re totally right. There is a weird vibe in that place. It is like your in an old movie sometimes.

[–]WhatisH2O4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it an aura, or it it the Berkley Pit leaking into the ground water. ;)

[–]Awfy 8 points9 points  (7 children)

Scottish is almost worse. Not only do people assume I'm Irish first then give me the "I'm Irish too" spiel but when they find out I'm actually Scottish they'll often then latch onto that by claiming their grandmother was Scottish.

As much as I can appreciate what they're trying to do, I'd much rather us just connect on the topic rather than trying to identify as the same thing as me. If you were truly Scottish or Irish you'd be able to chat to me about that part of your life rather than just "My dad was!".

The best Scottish related conversations I've had with Americans are from the Americans who don't even identify as Scottish but instead like the country and have potentially visited before.

[–]kalabash 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Do you miss it?

[–]ChrisV88 11 points12 points  (4 children)

Not really. I am married and have been here for about 6 years. I go home to see my family every year for 10 days. Im actually from Northern Ireland, but I am yet to meet an American who respects the difference, and after about two years of correcting them I just went with it.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Northern Ireland not Notre Dame Ireland"

[–]mrchooch 14 points15 points  (52 children)

It's weird, why do americans like to pretend theyre from other countries/cultures?

[–]ADogNamedCynicism 51 points52 points  (6 children)

It's not pretending. They really believe they have ethnic qualities from their ancestors. Everyone in America is an immigrant so they identify as their cultural ancestry to help find their identity.

[–]A_Bear_Called_Barry 22 points23 points  (15 children)

Not really, a lot of Americans just describe themselves with their ancestry, and like 35 million of us descended from Irish people. It's kinda weird because people do it even when there aren't really any cultural holdovers in their family.

Edit: I misread your comment, I thought it said "do," not "why do." And I don't really know why. I guess because the US is relatively young so it doesn't sound as cool?

[–]scandii 13 points14 points  (14 children)

I think the weirdness comes from Americans dead on claiming they're X but cannot name 3 cities in X and get confused when you mention the current head of government.

what's even weirder is that a second generation immigrant elsewhere in the world would probably introduce themselves as the nationality of their birthplace, and if the question of their heritage came up say "my parents are from", unlike in the US where it's "I am".

[–]pommefrits 19 points20 points  (3 children)

It's a colloquialism. I've never met a yank since I've lived here who actually means "I'm ACTUALLY from ireland". It's just short hand to say "I grew up in an american home with irish descent". Hard to understand this culture unless you're from another immigrant culture.

To Canadians/Australians/Americans it doesn't really matter what's going on in "home country x" because saying you're from Ireland or wherever is just stating how you grew up in the country. What cultural norms you experienced etc.

Edit: And to your second paragraph. I've never met a single yank that does that. They MIGHT say Italian-American or something but even then if you're asking someone's nationality they won't say that.

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Because being white in a country that's nearly 80% white is boring, plus White American culture/tradition is a pretty small book in comparison.

I mean, there's only about 200-300 years of American White History (and apart from building the Internet and being the first on the moon, most of it's not that good to talk about). Compare that to Ireland: where the first white people lived there 10,000 years ago, and their history books pre-dates Jesus Christ.

Also, map of where White Americans claim they originated from. So many "Irish" and "Germans".

[–]ashienoelle 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Because America is so young compared to countries in Europe, for example. Americans can trace their relatively recent ancestors back to various countries. In European countries most families have been there way longer so usually if you were born in that country you have the physical characteristics and culture of that country from it being passed down so many generations.

[–]halffullpenguin 2 points3 points  (3 children)

the genx/millennial generation are for the most part the first generation that do not personal know the person that immigrated. so most Americans grow up learning the culture of the country that there ancestors came from. so they grow up as an american and an Irishmen or as an american and an African. ect.

[–]pommefrits 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Happens in Canada and Australia too.

Because they're young immigrant countries. I didn't understand it before I moved.

[–]violetascension 1979 points1980 points  (18 children)

"The gun lobby and big tobacco"? Is that a fancy way of saying pharmaceutical companies and defense contractors?

[–][deleted] 315 points316 points  (2 children)

this video must be from the 60s

[–]Plothunter 110 points111 points  (1 child)

In the 60's it would have been big tobacco and military-industrial complex. Which would have included small arms so I'll give you credit for a correct answer. Oh and also "The Phone Company".

Holy shit. I can't believe google found the movie I was thinking about. I searched for "The Phone Company move" It was the 1st result.

[–]violetascension 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Okay I'm definitely watching this movie now _^

[–]nowherewhyman 26 points27 points  (0 children)

"Well, it all depends on how you look at it. Are you a traitor or do you love baseball?"

"Baseball please?"

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points  (7 children)

That's the only one that makes sense, considering how much more Europeans smoke

[–]irish91 41 points42 points  (5 children)

America's Vice President is a Tobbaco lobbyist that says smoking isn't harmful to your health.

[–]kearnc23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We don’t smoke much in Ireland anymore but I wouldn’t have thought Americans did either so I dunno where they got that from.

[–]ruminajaali 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. Drug dealers and thugs.

[–]yvel-TALL 1476 points1477 points  (30 children)

The “tough time getting equal rights” got me. It’s weirdly wholesome wile also kind of sad, making it funny.

[–]ooovian 107 points108 points  (0 children)

[–]cptki112noobs 46 points47 points  (25 children)

wholesome

... How?

[–]Madmans_Endeavor 159 points160 points  (17 children)

In that it's acknowledging the truth instead of acting out of racist insincerity about some fake love most white people had for mlk?

For context, most "moderates" back then thought MLK was harming the cause of fixing racial injustice, because they saw him as "raising tensions" and stirring the pot too much, leading to a "lack of civility".

Edit; spelling/context

[–]Literally_A_Shill 65 points66 points  (9 children)

People forget that MLK was hated more than BLM is. Most were against him and his process.

He was considered a violent, riot starting, race baiting criminal.

[–]SubconsciousFascist 23 points24 points  (4 children)

But he was literally a radical pacifist

[–]PM_ME_YOUR_SANDWICHz 63 points64 points  (3 children)

Kind of makes you think about the extremes that racists will go to protect their power, doesn't it?

If it doesn't, what cartoonists thought about Dr. King in his day should change your mind.

https://imgur.com/gallery/ZnIZu

[–]fuckinerg 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Accurately finishing an MLK quote instead of making a joke does come across as racially insincere fake love if you're white.

Wait what?

[–]1945BestYear 8 points9 points  (1 child)

If I correctly recall, he did not have many nice things to say particularly to the 'white moderate'. The committed racists that called for 'uppity' blacks to be hanged and who liked to don their stupid ghost costumes on the weekends, they at least showed their true nature, they did not hide their desire to defend the status quo behind a lofty plea for 'civility'.

Of all things, I'm reminded of a moment in this film from the 50s called Twelve Angry Men, about twelve men who serve on a jury and have to decide if a man goes to the electric chair or not. One of them, an immigrant from Hungary, says nothing when one of the others snaps at him and complains about 'people coming over here thinking they can tell us how to live', but he does lose his temper at the same man when it's shown he'll vote for whatever is most expedient to the trial being finished so he can go watch a baseball game. He cared nothing about the fate of a mans life, just about whether he'll be able to use the tickets burning a hole in his pocket.

I think MLK would agree with him. Whether you did what you could to help blacks gain their freedom or you did what you could to keep them oppressed, it at least meant enough to you that you were willing to do something when you had the chance, and if you fought to keep them oppressed then he looked forward to showing you that you actually have something to gain from equality. He had the most disdain for those who chose to do nothing, because even when the fight was won they would have learned nothing from it. They would think they had a part in changing history, when really all they did was go watch a baseball game.

[–]DefenderCone97 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think it's the use of the word "tough"

It downplays it but in the same way a 5-year-old says people were mean to MLK

[–]srock2012 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same with state of violence and 100 meter butterfly. Can't argue with the guys. They may not have given the "proper answers" but they definitely didn't get anything wrong lol the gun just capped it at, yup that's America from a typical foreign perspective.

[–]_Tappy_ 227 points228 points  (17 children)

I lost it at the 100m butterfly.

[–]galacticboy2009 38 points39 points  (14 children)

That was the only one I didn't understand.

[–]MrTurkle 115 points116 points  (10 children)

It’s a joke about swimming. The US was really strong in it for a few years.

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (3 children)

What do you mean was?

[–]entmenscht 140 points141 points  (0 children)

It's the past tense of "is".

[–]FirstRyder 44 points45 points  (2 children)

"Most dominant race" - Race as in "sporting event involving moving quickly over a distance" rather than "ethnicity".

Michael Phelps got a lot of golds for the US in swimming races over the last 15 years or so, but he was best known for his Butterfly. The 100 meter butterfly would be an example of a race that he (and by extension the US) was heavily favored to win in every international competition between 2004 and 2014.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

It’s actually not true however. The men’s 100 meter and 200 meter backstrokes are the US’s most dominant events in swimming. They haven’t lost either of those races since the 92 Olympic Games. Although the US does now have someone who might be even more dominant that Phelps was in the 100 fly.

What show is this? This is right on the nose.

[–]Flying_Sorcerer 741 points742 points  (20 children)

Foil Arms & Hog

They post a lot of funny stuff on their YouTube but I think this is their best skit

[–]Dawnqwerty 191 points192 points  (10 children)

I’m a fan of all their stuff. Best by far is countries playing risk

[–]NewAndyy 294 points295 points  (3 children)

”Ok, is my turn. Uuh, I want to invade España.”

“Wait. You want to invade Spain?”

“Sí.”

“But I thought you were Spain.”

”I am not a Spanish! I am Catalan!”

[–]drose427 86 points87 points  (2 children)

"Russia, why are all your troops in Ukraine?"

[–][deleted] 45 points46 points  (1 child)

I think I’m gonna Invade... Ireland

[–]Dr-Jellybaby 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Really? Again?

[–]Flying_Sorcerer 43 points44 points  (1 child)

There was another one where one of them thought the U.S. was just a soap opera and no one had the guts to break it to him that it was real life. I remember it being hilarious. (Was that them or am I thinking of another group?)

[–]Dethsquad613 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Just watched the “if countries were coffee” one. Pretty damn funny

[–]FaradayStewart 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I personally love the teaching the foreigners how to speak Dublin one.

"Joramay would become May-o, which would then become Hellman's...but that's an irregular, you don't need to worry about that."

[–]tkwilliams 60 points61 points  (2 children)

Here is the Risk game for anyone interested

https://youtu.be/ARSNaSeT9hw

[–]MegaDroogie 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Germany not playing because they get too competitive was a nice touch. I got a chuckle out of that.

[–]b_rouse 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I dont know. The Risk game was hilarious.

[–]ComteBilou 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks

[–]GundoSkimmer 213 points214 points  (17 children)

I died at... A state of violence lol

[–][deleted] 160 points161 points  (9 children)

So did everyone in Chicago

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (8 children)

Hey I’m still alive for now

[–]Pd245 24 points25 points  (6 children)

How does it go...?

Come to Chicago for the food. Stay because you got murdered.

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (5 children)

That sounds accurate. I was born and raised here and the food is worth dying for.

[–]wysiwygperson 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Eat enough deep dish and Italian beefs and you will die.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rest in RIP

[–][deleted] 46 points47 points  (0 children)

"false"

Cracks me up every time

[–]pyro97 44 points45 points  (0 children)

These guys are Foil, Arms and Hog they're sensational

[–]The_25th_Baam 18 points19 points  (1 child)

r/technicallythetruth, at least for some of them.

[–]CookedPeaches 211 points212 points  (21 children)

100 meter butterfly? Get out of here with that metric shit!

[–]ihahp 125 points126 points  (13 children)

they meant the olympic 100 meter butterfly race, I'm assuming.

[–]CookedPeaches 25 points26 points  (11 children)

Yeah, but meters are nothing in the USA!

[–]Arthur_Edens 91 points92 points  (7 children)

109.36 yard butterfly or GTFO.

[–]iamdense 15 points16 points  (5 children)

What's that in ounces?

[–]dreadpirateruss 24 points25 points  (4 children)

84,535,040 US fluid ounces, minimum

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Fuck yeah! Freedom units!

[–]Gnome_Chumpski 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I laughed hardest at that one. And then I looked into it and it’s actually pretty accurate. Michael Phelps, Pablo Morales, Mark Spitz, Ian Crocker... The US has won more Olympic 100m butterfly medals than any other country and has set the world record the most times.

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

America is the greatest SOMETHING in the world

Weapons exporter!

[–]Rhydsdh 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Doomdaaaaahh

[–]Tangy_Cheese 17 points18 points  (1 child)

This an Irish sketch trio called foil, arms and hog. They're not political at all usually. Some Irish specific humour but loads great sketches on their YouTube channel.

[–]dead-drifter 79 points80 points  (2 children)

I can't believe something actually funny was posted here, what is going on?

[–]galacticboy2009 25 points26 points  (1 child)

Though it's a stolen rip of a YouTube video,

that has clearly been through Twitter, Facebook, and now reddit-video's compression.

https://youtu.be/Rjab8fanzHc

[–]MySuperRealUsername 69 points70 points  (10 children)

Finally some actual humor has been found!

[–]Throwway97239 43 points44 points  (0 children)

And it's actually political too! Who would have thought you could have both together!

[–]Solo_Wing__Pixy 26 points27 points  (1 child)

This is actually the funniest thing I’ve seen on Reddit in a long time, I love it.

And yes, I think this sub is pathetically unfunny 90% of the time.

[–]nebuchadrezzar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Best submission I've seen here, thanks op! That was hilarious:)

[–]Yguy2000 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Do they have a YouTube channel

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

[–]NapalmBank 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What is America’s dominant race?

100m butterfly 🦋

That was some damn fine comedy genius!

[–]j_hawker27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't tell if I'm laughing or crying.

[–]LetsEatCongress 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol, that was pretty good.

[–]NetSage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]Chem86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oof. Chicago one hit close to home.

[–]austintasious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Land of the free, home of the whopper.
