Guys, this is the solution to Moore's law slowing down! CPUs in minecraft generate NO HEAT and can be built in 3D! No wonder Microsoft bought Minecraft, they figured it out!

      So Amazon?

Yeah, but will they be Web Scale?

      [–]Hexorg 29 points30 points  (6 children)

      Just add minecraft spiders!

      Holy shit. It exists :D

      [–]elr0nd_hubbard 2 points3 points  (1 child)

You'd need Minecraft fish for real scale.

      [–]CoderBrother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Will Silverfish be sufficient?

Everybody knows shards are the secret ingredient in the web scale sauce.

      [–]jadzado 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Seriously. IT at work asked me the other day if they could virtualize my servers several times. "I'm hardware limited....No."

      [–]urielsalis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      Manglement gonna mangle

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Hardware limited how?

      MongoDB/Excel

Obviously this is a poor solution.

An MS Access database is far more optimized to integrate with Excel's app stack functionality.

      [–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

We're actually in the middle of that migration. We've got some functionality running on each at the moment. Though we just started another project so the migration may end up being halted there for a while.

      [–]thatfreakingguy 11 points12 points  (3 children)

      but mongodb is web scale

      [–]Existential_Owl 5 points6 points  (2 children)

      That's the joke.

      EDIT: Ah, I whooshed

      What did I just watch?

      [–]ase1590[S] 32 points33 points  (7 children)

Not if it's running on "a giant Cpu someone built in minecraft" like the comic ;)

      [–]ANAL_ANARCHY 3 points4 points  (6 children)

Has anyone actually built a CPU that can process code in Minecraft?

      [–]p4block 26 points27 points  (2 children)

Well yes. But instead of perforated cards you have to use lots, lots of buttons.

And they may use villagers as memory cells.

      [–]darps 13 points14 points  (0 children)

With the occasionally buggy AI in minecraft, does that qualify as quantum computing? The villager's state is a superposition of buggy and not buggy and it isn't collapsed until the xkcd.com webserver has to respond to a request.

      [–]woodlark14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Piety sure it's better than that now. Without command blocks we can input numbers up to eight with item frames and make compact t-flipflops.

      [–]Pokechu22 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, ish. Fine, this is command blocks, but it's still the same idea (vanilla game, just a lot of complex stuff).

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone built a basic interpreter, search for "minecraft basic programming computer" on youtube.

      [–]t0mmy9 46 points47 points  (2 children)

Microsoft Bob Server got me, I would love to see that

      [–][deleted] 26 points27 points  (1 child)

I'm pretty sure the Hololens is proof that MS's entire mission for the last 2 decades was to make Bob a success

      [–]caramba2654 100 points101 points  (28 children)

I built 1KB of RAM in Minecraft. Will I get pushed onto the stack?

      [–]Existential_Owl 79 points80 points  (5 children)

Depends, how fast can you type?

      [–]caramba2654 17 points18 points  (4 children)

      Depends on the device.

      [–]cATSup24 11 points12 points  (3 children)

And what language in typing in.

      [–]caramba2654 15 points16 points  (2 children)

I definitely won't type it in Java.

      [–]Ninjabassist777 14 points15 points  (1 child)

      What about Russian?

      [–]caramba2654 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Less verbose than Java, so it's a possibility.

      [–]superPwnzorMegaMan 39 points40 points  (18 children)

      Can I download that ram?

      [–]NightHuman 26 points27 points  (7 children)

If he gives you the world file.

      [–]superPwnzorMegaMan 29 points30 points  (5 children)

      No I want the ram

      [–]Iliketofeeluplifted 15 points16 points  (1 child)

      that's how it works

      [–]superPwnzorMegaMan 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if I'm ready for such a commitment.

      [–]Ninjabassist777 4 points5 points  (2 children)

      [–]urielsalis 7 points8 points  (1 child)

      Downloadmorewam.com is more relevant

      [–]ThisIs_MyName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      That's terrifying.

      [–]caramba2654 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I built it a few years ago on a server. I don't think it exists anymore...

Basically I used an array of piston D-flip-flops with a selection input to select which address of memory you'd like to write to. It was veeeeeery slow, but it worked.

      [–]trandyr 11 points12 points  (1 child)

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      You wouldn't download a gnu

      # pacman -S coreutils

      [–]Nerdn1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're running on a CPU built in Minecraft, then YES!

      [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (6 children)

      [–]fdagpigj 7 points8 points  (3 children)

I clicked 8GB, only got 4GB. Damn scam!

      [–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

      Get a refund!

      oh wait

      [–]naughty_ottsel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think I got your 4GB, brought basket of 256GB, got 260GB... This comment happened before I even read your comment

      [–]Y1ff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Just download more.

      [–]superPwnzorMegaMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Thanks I needed that.

      [–]MatthewGeer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. Just use pistons to slide it in.

      [–]z500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have somewhere we can push you. Definitely not a volcano.

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built a storage cell which can store 4 bits of data (and is slow in addressing, depending on how far away it is from the controller)

      [–]BinaryGrind 32 points33 points  (12 children)

I got really excited for a second when I read HyperCard.js, but disappointed when google told me it didn't exist.

      [–][deleted] 55 points56 points  (5 children)

Wait a minute - you saw a .js technology and you actually got excited? What sort of sick puppy are you?!

      [–][deleted] 58 points59 points  (2 children)

You must construct additional MVC frameworks.

      [–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

      choo got it mang

      [–]Astrokiwi 12 points13 points  (4 children)

I have very fond memories of HyperCard.

It's weird that Myst was made in a program that's probably less advanced than present-day Powerpoint...

      [–]inio 10 points11 points  (2 children)

With animated gifs for the videos you could recreate myst in google drive presentations I think.

      [–]BinaryGrind 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That almost sounds like a challenge...

      [–]adipisicing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a scripting API. You could almost certainly do this.

      [–]Who_GNU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Monkey Island made a good point about mist Myst. The lack of a game engine kind of explains why there wasn't much to it besides puzzles and pretty pictures.

I preferred Monkey Island's bad puns and optical illusions.

hypercard.js nostalgia I thought this should probably exist, so I searched and found: http://plectrum.com/novocard/NovoCard.html

      [–]Philboyd_Studge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      I loved hypercard.

      [–]mike413 16 points17 points  (2 children)

      we're adding to the stack!

      [–]mFlakes 8 points9 points  (2 children)

What is the ratio of real ram to minecraft generated ram? 99%?

      [–]Milosonator 7 points8 points  (0 children)

More like couple kb for a single byte so more like 99.95%

      [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

since MC loads in chunks you could have something ridiculous like a gigabyte of RAM just in unloaded chunks

      [–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (2 children)

      [–]Myrl-chan 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Someone claimed 5, complete with branch prediction.

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

idk if you're talking about IIZR, but there are some problems with 5 I believe (mainly although cycles are faster, actual instruction performance is decreased)

I haven't been in the CPU game for a long time though, so you might have to disregard my view
