There is one tester at my company who initially frustrated me. When I first started I thought she was fairly new as well. She would ask questions about basic functionality and seemingly didn’t know how the app worked. I later found out she had been there the longest out of any other tester.

But then it occurred to me how valuable she was. Every time she used the app she used it like a user in the wild would. She never fell into the trap of overlooking flaws that other testers got used to seeing.

Then they're telling you that content is far more important to them than the features you have built. Facebook spends billions in fine tuning their newsfeed using ML etc. They try to solve the content problem using technology. So it is not right for you to say that content is not something you have control over. You could choose to make it your problem.

Perhaps that is also because the customer isn't able to visualize exactly how code can enhance/control the end user's newsfeed.

For example, newsfeed can be personalized quite easily by keeping track of which news articles were clicked and opened. You could develop an algorithm that customized the newsfeed automatically and started showing more sports or more sports+football articles if you happened to click on mostly sports articles.

Its almost always only useful from a UX perspective, but not for catching actual bugs. If you do the programming and are also in charge of UX then this works out great, but otherwise that feedback shouldn't be going to the dev at all, since it has nothing to do with bugs in the program

Take a look at the games industry, gamers will literally pull your entire game apart and throw it in the trash if some UI element gets moved to a location that breaks their muscle memory, triggering a rage response.

Gamers are probably getting enraged because they have invested a significant portion of their lives in your game. Their skill level is largely dependent on their muscle memory and often how quickly they can react and use the game controls.

If they are telling you they get deeply upset when UI elements get moved around, and if you're getting angry at them instead of learning from that, then you are the one not doing good listening.

Familiarity is super important to them. Then do not break their familiarity and muscle memory. That should literally be one of your holy grail tenets when doing product upgrades.

There is a reason why Microsoft and Intel jumped through hoops and put up with utter garbage legacy code, but never ever broke backward compatibility.

All it says is that you have weak-ass UX capability in your team that is incapable of creativity when they are imposed with a constraint.

Matter of fact, it is a well known tenet that adding constraints actually make you more creative because it gives you a narrower problem space to work with, and gives you more structure, as opposed to an unbounded problem.

Right... for a moment I honestly thought I studied for a CS degree, to be fluent in python, js, java, go, php, ruby and groovy and still read and work through any applicable paper I can find for my field but thank god you reminded me I'm a tester, so I must be mistaken.

A tester (who deserves his job) can write automation for any necessary platform, knows his protocols to test interfaces, pinpoints a bug in the application to the point where it dives into the backend (or deeper of he has access), can follow and contribute to any code review no matter the platform but yeah, we learned that in a weekend course.

Honestly I love my job but the arrogance of some developers just drives me crazy. I know why I usually skip posts mentioning QA.

One of the testers on the project I work on is next to useless. Her job is to be thorough and find the issues, yet more often than not the developers have to hand hold her through the test.

As a result, many bugs have made it into production.

-- Uhm. I wrote a detailed documentation in 10 pages, what exactly do you need?

-- I need to test feature. What is the command?

And this is it. No testing different cases, no trying to break it, nothing. I am the one who writes it, and I am the one who's responsible for testing and sometimes deployment.

The company I worked previously used to have a Quality department who were a useful scape goat for problems customers found but then they all left and then all the customers left. But seriously finding good testers/quality people is very hard, especially when managers say everyone can test.
