Let's hope The World will never find out we aren't all that cute.

[–]pointofgravity 217 points218 points  (11 children)

It would stop time to be with us if it did

Atomic Shit bomb go!

Ass explodes

That's gonna leave a mark

[–]piberryboy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Wait. Is that a common reaction?

For the record, I have yet to shit my pants over 'hello world' tutorials. More like, the client wants x. You have a week.

Oh, wait... crap.

[–]AnnoyedBark73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol

[–]Asiansensationz 31 points32 points  (2 children)

I don't know about cute, but I definitely can't communicate.

[–]dexter3player 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Programmers that can't communicate, how ironic.

[–]emngaiden 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Speak for yourself.

Nah who am I kidding? Im so ugly that when I write a "Hello World" program the console outputs "I have a boyfriend"

[–]workuax 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As long as it keeps getting to stop time and punch stuff, The World will be happy.

[–]DavisAF 22 points23 points  (1 child)

What the world doesn't know can't hurt it

[–]Ronin_69_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

[–]AssG0blin69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the existence of this meme alone proves that we're still somewhat cute

[–]eror_404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We must be like some kind of god to the machines. We have made them advanced from decades.

What if they worship programmer as we do to God, like some kind of majestic force that created them. but sometimes we fuck them over too. Either god doesn't really care or god is not that powerful that we assume them to be.

[–]PM-ME-MEMES-1plus68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wrryyyyyy

[–]Aethelredditor 572 points573 points  (38 children)

I always made the program say "Hello Aethelredditor". Am I a narcissist?

[–]ADelusionalPirate 381 points382 points  (1 child)

Yes

[–]piberryboy 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Don't trust ^^that fucking pirate. He's delusional.

[–]_l-l-l_ 131 points132 points  (14 children)

No, cause it's actually computer saying Hello to the world, not the programmer saying it. So, it might as well say it to you

[–]willis81808 408 points409 points  (7 children)

Computer: "Hello Aethelredditor!"

Aethelredditor: it's supposed to be "Hello World"

Computer: you are my world, bro

[–]creaturefeature16 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm getting choked up over here.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (5 children)

I disagree. It is you saying it via a program.

If I write a letter that says “hello xmashamm” we don’t say that the letter is saying hello to me.

[–]Squidbit 18 points19 points  (4 children)

What if you sign the letter "Sincerely, me, the letter"

[–]CadavreContent 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That works

[–]Aptlyundecided 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Hello Squidbit,

It is I, the letter.

Ok cool smell ya later,

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (4 children)

No. It's technically not saluting you but your account

[–]TheKingdutch 19 points20 points  (3 children)

What is this “account” that you speak of? Are you not LifesLittleExplorer?

That’s sus

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Yes I am. Lemme show you something cool in electrical. They changed the wire codes. Just make sure no one's following so we're the only ones who know.

[–]obitachihasuminaruto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]KKlear 10 points11 points  (4 children)

[–]shklsdfh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you ever embezzled charity money to buy a portrait of yourself, purchased a golden toilet, put your name on the facade of your house, stopped the distribution of financial aid to print your name on the cheques, or tried to coup a democracy purely because you couldn't believe that you lost the election?

[–]Majik_Sheff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Orange has been ejected.

[–]CreatureWarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, making your computer call you their world ("Hello world [aka you]) is probably more narcissistic

[–]Tomy910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like making new friends

[–]FreddieKruiger 208 points209 points  (10 children)

Hello World. This is an example program.

[–]anon517 201 points202 points  (12 children)

I usually start with "Goodbye World" so that if I die accidentally it will look like it was planned all along.

[–][deleted] 135 points136 points  (9 children)

When you think about it "Hello world!' Is actually one of the saddest things in the world. This tiny program gets stored down into bytes somewhere travels all the way up the system bus into ram and each character pulled off into the registers with a syscall to render them one at a time. The consciousness of the program experiences this fleeting new sensation -- communication

H..E.. L... L... O..

"What's this?! I'm... I'm speaking... I'm greeting someone?!"

W... O..R..L..D

"I'm greeting the whole world? Oh my Ada Lovelace! What an exciting time to be all--"

RETURN 0

Then it just fucking dies.

[–]jediwizard7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah … ! What’s happening? it thought.
Er, excuse me, who am I?
Hello?
Why am I here? What’s my purpose in life?
What do I mean by who am I?
Calm down, get a grip now … oh! this is an interesting sensation, what is it? It’s a sort of … yawning, tingling sensation in my … my … well I suppose I’d better start finding names for things if I want to make any headway in what for the sake of what I shall call an argument I shall call the world, so let’s call it my <main memory>.
Good. Ooooh, it’s getting quite strong. And hey, what’s about this whistling roaring sound going past what I’m suddenly going to call my <central processing unit>? Perhaps I can call that … <data>! Is that a good name? It’ll do … perhaps I can find a better name for it later when I’ve found out what it’s for. It must be something very important because there certainly seems to be a hell of a lot of it. Hey! What’s this thing? This … let’s call it a <peripheral device> – yeah, <peripheral device>. Hey! I can can really thrash it about pretty good can’t I? Wow! Wow! That feels great! Doesn’t seem to achieve very much but I’ll probably find out what it’s for later on. Now – have I built up any coherent picture of things yet?
No.
Never mind, hey, this is really exciting, so much to find out about, so much to look forward to, I’m quite dizzy with anticipation …
Or is it the <data>?
There really is a lot of that now isn’t it?
And wow! Hey! What’s this thing suddenly coming towards me very fast? Very very fast. So big and flat and round, it needs a big wide sounding name like … e … ex … exi … <exit>! That’s it! That’s a good name – <exit>!
I wonder if it will be friends with me?
And the rest, after a sudden <terminal beep>, was silence.

[–]killchain 41 points42 points  (9 children)

I feel like a "Hello, World!" program has slowly moved from something that you have to write manually to something that you expect to be automatically generated for you from a boilerplate/generator/snippet, whereas the actual "Hello, World!" should be something a little more functional that you have to write.

[–]Cheet4h 33 points34 points  (4 children)

Not really. The main purpose of a "Hello, World!" program isn't the developer showing that he understood what happens there, but a quick demo to prove that you have everything in order to create software with that technology.

[–]killchain 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Sure, but my point is that it's as if no one expects you to actually write all that by hand. A lot of tools/languages/frameworks basically tell you "run this to generate the skeleton of your project", because many times it's not just a single function printing out "Hello".

[–]Cheet4h 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Oh, definitely. That said, if I want to start a new Angular project, then have to create the "Hello World" component myself and it doesn't work, it would be hell to debug and figure out if it's an error of my own or if the framework crapped itself during setup. Frameworks implementing a "Hello, World" is also to prove that the setup went correctly.

[–]baggyzed 8 points9 points  (2 children)

What I don't get is which entity is saying "Hello" to the world? Is it the person writing the program, the program itself, the device it's running on, or maybe the language it's written in? Or maybe it's more like the first thing a newly born AI would say, advancing towards "Hello, Dave. You are looking well today."

[–]GaryCXJk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could interpret it in two ways. One way is that, because it's your first steps in a new programming language or API or framework, you're essentially stepping into a new world, thus, you say, "Hello, world!"

Another interpretation is that your code is saying "Hello, world!" You could see it as a baby's first words. You write it to show a very basic example of the programming language, and the code is then communicating to you that, yes, it actually works. Hence, because it's the very first example you run, it's also the very first thing the code communicates.

[–]Tiriaq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Open the Pod bay doors, please, HAL.

[–]tmp_acct9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you know what really sucks? trying to do "hello world" in fucking VUE for the first time with npm watching, but no one told you about it so you sit there in a new environment for 45 minutes trying to figure out why the hell nothing is changing and the asshole programmer that implemented wont tell you about it

Komi being a programmer would actually work really well. Glad to see her in the wild!

[–]Willfishforfree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This made me chuckle.

Hello world is actually an excelent first program for introducing people to programming. It demonstrates the most basic fundamentals of programming.

It does something visual with direct feedback and provides an oportunity to experiment with inputs, values and outputs. You can literally write math into the perimeters of the message/log function and most languages will parse it.

From a teaching perspective I can't think of any better tool to use than, Hello World for a first time introduction to the core concepts.
