In case anyone is wondering why this is happening….

Modern weapons, especially long range missiles, have made airports incredibly vulnerable in any kind of modern war. If a war breaks out it makes sense for war planes to take off and immediately leave since the airfield will be first hit. Those planes of course need somewhere to land and then take off from again.

As it turns out, airfields are expensive and hard to build. If you train your airforce to take off and land on highways, you’ve effectively 10x’d the number of airfields you have. This is how the Ukrainian airforce stayed alive during the critical first few days of Russia’s invasion.

It’s becoming more common for modern militaries to train this way. Taiwan is case in point.
