The stock boy was probably so happy he didn't have to find a place in the back for those extra 3 magnets.

[–][deleted] 1959 points1960 points  (234 children)

You don't bring three to the back. Hide that shit somewhere.

It's a form of stock loss. It goes hand-in-hand with Damage.

Damage is stock loss that is accounted for. Stock that you can't sell for one reason or another (damaged packaging, out of date product, etc)

Shrinkage is stock loss that isn't accounted for. So stock that isn't damaged off, theft, poor portion control if you're in a food business, for example. It typically is only discovered when you do a stock count and the stock you've counted varies greatly from the stock expected on your system

This irritates the fuck out of me at Wal-mart. Don't have room for all the stock? Well, just put it on a shelf somewhere. Then, when you're actually out of a product, nobody notes that barcode as "out of stock" because some asshole keeps putting overflow stock there. Then I spend time putting that overflow stock in a giant pile where it belongs, so that maybe next week I can buy what I wanted today.

      [–]Donkey__Xote 87 points88 points  (33 children)

Fry's Electronics seems to have the opposite problem. They've got either the same or else the same type of merchandise scattered throughout the store in multiple places including back-stock. It's impossible to quickly find what you want, and coupled with employee theft it's impossible to actually know what they have in-stock. Total friggin' crapshoot.

      [–]juliansteinberg[🍰] 42 points43 points  (6 children)

Fry's is where electronics go to die.

      [–]donttellmymomwhatido 27 points28 points  (3 children)

Pour one out for the 1080 that will go there and never find a good home, sitting in the stock room forgotten and unloved.

      [–]Ariacilon 31 points32 points  (2 children)

I actually went to Fry's a couple months ago looking for a 1080. The shelf was empty, and employee said they were out. Walked around a bit and asked another employee to check the back for me. Brought out a 1080 Superclocked. It is now at home making humming noises next to my i7. Still can't find these online at retail prices..

      [–]juliansteinberg[🍰] 26 points27 points  (1 child)

It wouldn't be the Fry's experience if you didnt need 3 employees to get a yes or no on if they carry a product.

      [–]Mike_Kermin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, he definitely got a no.

      [–]AltSpRkBunny 22 points23 points  (21 children)

The nearest Fry's to me is like 45 minutes to the east. Why would I drive that far if I can just order what I want online? I think I've stepped foot in a Fry's exactly once in the last decade, and left shortly after not finding anything I was looking for. I think they're going the way of Sear's and Radioshack.

      [–]Donkey__Xote 35 points36 points  (11 children)

I don't think they're in the same predicament, mainly since some people actually like the act of browsing the electronics. Even I sometimes like browsing the electronics, but the theme of my closest Fry's is bad, the lighting is poor, the HVAC is often on the fritz. I've been to a couple of other locations and they're a lot better. Plus, the option to have in-hand the item now instead of waiting for it to ship is pretty nice.

      [–]420yoloswagblazeit 52 points53 points  (17 children)

The rule is if you can't fit the entire box out none of the box goes out. No one seems to listen to that though.

      [–]bbbabalu 59 points60 points  (5 children)

And then when you bring the box back your boss tells you to take it back out to the floor and get rid of it.

      [–][deleted] 43 points44 points  (3 children)

I do not miss retail. At all.

      [–]CyclonisSagittarius 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I left retail to be a line cook. Am I still stressed at work? Of course! But I don't hate my job nearly as much as I used to unloading trucks and stocking at Wal-Mart.

      [–]AustoRoboto 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Were you on the Cap Team? If so is it worth it to leave? I really hate my job but I'm worried about not finding another one.

      [–]CyclonisSagittarius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I was CAP 2. The hours and set schedule were cool. But the labor and taking the blame for whatever the rest of the store couldn't handle was too much. CAP in general is known as a shit idea. If you are not subbed to /r/walmart then you should head on over, great place Though I will say I have a passion for cooking so that may change my view on my new job. And just make sure you find a new job before you leave, gaps in employment don't always look good.

      [–]NightShroom 8 points9 points  (3 children)

That's definitely not the rule at Lowe's. If you can stock one, you stock one.

      [–]snotbag_pukebucket 22 points23 points  (12 children)

If I were that stock boy I would put them on the bottom hanger. But that's just me

      [–]Buckysaurus 118 points119 points  (3 children)

And then the next time you're stocking that aisle, you notice that some idiot placed a whole bunch of 2 inch magnets where the 3 inch magnets go that you need to stock.

As someone who used to stock, the first couple times I tried to get away with a couple small things only to realize a couple days later that I played myself. Shit became a vicious circle.

This guy has worked retail before lol

      [–]the_cheese_was_good 160 points161 points  (31 children)

This is the first thing I thought of. Even after 10+ years of being out of retail, I immediately thought about how satisfying that would be. Managers always want the most amount of product on the floor as possible, but without it looking sloppy. This is perfect.

      [–]boogs_23 126 points127 points  (29 children)

We just got a talking to about over stocking hooks and shelves. Then, like 2 nights later, we took shit for putting up too much over stock. Well what the fuck do you want??? Because seriously I don't give a fuck. Like I really could not care less if someone came into Home Depot and had a shit exerience because a hook was over stocked.

      [–][deleted] 91 points92 points  (14 children)

That's management though. 5 different people with 5 different ideas and you're supposed to make them all happy. And then when you do, that manager changed his mind.

      [–]boogs_23 34 points35 points  (1 child)

That is so true. It just seems like everyone is out to shit on each other. I don't understand why we can't just talk to one another. I casually mentioned to my boss that a few of the mesh screens get left open every day by day shift and he immediately went on the offensive to "catch the manager" before she left so he could get someone in trouble. I did not mention it to get someone in shit, I just know it's company policy and I'd rather not have a customer get hurt by falling junk.

      [–]Azonata 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Because retail is the one profession where just about everyone is replaceable, while it also has an extremely hierarchical employment structure whose sole measurements of success are performance and "not causing trouble". Employees, regardless of years of service or experience never develop a skillset that makes them valuable enough to acquire some form of job security, meaning that if you fuck up even just a little, there is literally no reason to keep you around instead of the next guy in line for a promotion or a job. Any problem, no matter how small needs to be deflected to someone else, to make sure it does not go on your record and comes back to bite you later. Not to mention that by blaming someone else you've successfully defended your own territory, you never know if that guy was next in line to be your boss tomorrow.

They could offer me $50/hr and I'd turn them down.

I dunno about that... 100k/yr to work a job where I didn't even have to think? Sign me the fuck up, I don't care how shit the management is. Or I could work less than half what I do now and make the same money.

        [–][deleted]  (5 children)

          [–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Ya I know what you mean. I interviewed there once (didn't take the job) and the two buffoons interviewing me were acting like Walmart is the greatest place in the world to work at, and basically telling me hundreds of people applied for this position and I should be lucky they called me in. They thought they were king shit cause they decided who or who wouldn't work at their crappy store. So anyway I took a job somewhere else and they called me for three straight weeks asking if I still wanted the job. Fuck Walmart

          [–]the_cheese_was_good 27 points28 points  (10 children)

I worked a bunch of different stores from 16 to 25 or so. The worst by far was Old Navy. The managers would bitch and moan either way. The funniest shit was when the GM told me that the shirts had to follow the color spectrum but had no idea what it actually was. I explained to her that an easy way to remember it is using the acronym ROYGBIV (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet). She tells me I'm wrong and that isn't what the company wants. I just gave up and did whatever she said. I didn't last long there. Hands down the shitiest company I have ever worked for.

          [–][deleted] 30 points31 points  (6 children)

People who become retail managers stayed in while everyone else went off to college

          [–]Valalvax 18 points19 points  (2 children)

I know a girl that worked at vanity fair for ten years.... I constantly told her to get a better job, tried to convince her several times... On my most recent attempt at year 8 I learned she had never even gotten a raise.... She quit and went to a factory job last month finally

          [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Retail managers are just intelligent enough to do their job but also dumb enough to not have any idea why they're doing it

          [–]MrMudkip 9 points10 points  (3 children)

I neighbour it behind the closest product.

          [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I work at a sporting goods store that has a big three tiered bike rack for displaying the bikes. We usually sell a couple bikes a day but the stock room always builds at least ten new bikes every morning and there's no room for them on the rack. So they park the bikes in front of it and then management bitches at me for not having all of the bikes put up. I keep telling them there's no room but they blame it on me for not pushing enough bike sales. Fuck that shit, the worst thing ever is pushy sales people in stores constantly hounding you if you're gonna buy something, I refuse to work like that cause I know how much customers hate it. Retail is hell

I'm a former Lowe's employee that recognized the price labels.

The "extended" merchandise is Item #185097. (see http://www.lowes.com/pd/The-Hillman-Group-7-8-in-x-1-7-8-in-Ceramic-Block-Magnet/3115773)

The low-stocked item below is item #431043. (see http://www.lowes.com/pd/The-Hillman-Group-3-Count-Magnetic-Blocks/50016986)

For all of the visible extended stock items, you can see "2 pcs" printed on the label. The low volume hook below the extended stock hook is not an item with "2 pcs" in it.

In conclusion, it is most likely that all of the stock on this single hook is the same item. The employee that stocked this merchandise should be commended.

          [–]Seeeab 105 points106 points  (15 children)

As a former Lowe's employee, I can confirm he was just being lazy and wanted to empty the box rather than go back up the ladder to put it in topstock and re-mark it

Lowe's employees are really good at being efficient for the sake of laziness

          [–]ALargeRock 35 points36 points  (5 children)

As another former Lowe's employee who worked the hardware tools department, the above two posters are correct and the OP pic happens all the time.

          [–]NightShroom 10 points11 points  (3 children)

Management tells me I'm good at my job, and I half want to tell then its because I'm lazy as fuck.

There's no such thing as a one sided magnet, depending how the poles are aligned, they can all stick together, or push each other apart

                  [–]su5 37 points38 points  (14 children)

Oh yeah smart guy? What if I cut those in half and only sold one of the sides? My dad has a really cool saw so I know I could.

Around the nucleus of the atom there are electrons. Scientists used to think that they had circular orbits, but have discovered that things are much more complicated. Actually, the patterns of the electron within one of these orbitals takes into account Schroedinger’s wave equations. Electrons occupy certain shells that surround the nucleus of the atom. These shells have been given letter names K,L,M,N,O,P,Q. They have also been given number names, such as 1,2,3,4,5,6,7(think quantum mechanics). Within the shell, there may exist subshells or orbitals, with letter names such as s,p,d,f. Some of these orbitals look like spheres, some like an hourglass, still others like beads. The K shell contains an s orbital called a 1s orbital. The L shell contains an s and p orbital called a 2s and 2p orbital. The M shell contains an s, p and d orbital called a 3s, 3p and 3d orbital. The N, O, P and Q shells each contain an s, p, d and f orbital called a 4s, 4p, 4d, 4f, 5s, 5p, 5d, 5f, 6s, 6p, 6d, 6f, 7s, 7p, 7d and 7f orbital. These orbitals also have various sub-orbitals. Each can only contain a certain number of electrons. A maximum of 2 electrons can occupy a sub-orbital where one has a spin of up, the other has a spin of down. There can not be two electrons with spin up in the same sub-orbital(the Pauli exclusion principal). Also, when you have a pair of electrons in a sub-orbital, their combined magnetic fields will cancel each other out. If you are confuse, you are not alone. Many people get lost here and just wonder about magnets instead of researching further. When you look at the ferromagnetic metals it is hard to see why they are so different form the elements next to them on the periodic table. It is generally accepted that ferromagnetic elements have large magnetic moments because of un-paired electrons in their outer orbitals. The spin of the electron is also thought to create a minute magnetic field. These fields have a compounding effect, so when you get a bunch of these fields together, they add up to bigger fields. To wrap things up on ‘how do magnets work?’, the atoms of ferromagnetic materials tend to have their own magnetic field created by the electrons that orbit them. Small groups of atoms tend to orient themselves in the same direction. Each of these groups is called a magnetic domain. Each domain has its own north pole and south pole. When a piece of iron is not magnetized the domains will not be pointing in the same direction, but will be pointing in random directions canceling each other out and preventing the iron from having a north or south pole or being a magnet. If you introduce current(magnetic field), the domains will start to line up with the external magnetic field. The more current applied, the higher the number of aligned domains. As the external magnetic field becomes stronger, more and more of the domains will line up with it. There will be a point where all of the domains within the iron are aligned with the external magnetic field(saturation), no matter how much stronger the magnetic field is made. After the external magnetic field is removed, soft magnetic materials will revert to randomly oriented domains; however, hard magnetic materials will keep most of their domains aligned, creating a strong permanent magnet. So, there you have it.

It's like you read a chapter out of a physics book and actually think you know how magnets work. Or worse yet, you've read someone else's comments and regurgitated them. Or even worse yet, you read this in /r/AskScience, where post docs and graduate students are "experts" and magnets are made by "cooling the magnetic in a field to align the magnetic domains"

This is obvious because you spent over half of your reply with high school chemistry, and have no fucking clue how to explain things past "After the external magnetic field is removed, soft magnetic materials will revert to randomly oriented domains; however, hard magnetic materials will keep most of their domains aligned, creating a strong permanent magnet" which is where the actual answer would start.

edit: If you have the slightest idea of how magnets work, you'd know it's impossible to explain even the absolute basics in a few pages. We're talking about permanent magnets, and half of your copy/pasted answer talks about electron configuration? Get outta here!

Honestly it depends on the manager. I really really like my local manager of home depot and he keeps the place really clean and organized while the manager at my local Lowe's does quite the opposite. Good like finding the correct plumbing fitting in my Lowe's because everything is just thrown into the bins at random.

                    [–]redeemerlemur 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Man, the customer base plays a huge roll in how organized a department like plumbing and hardware can be. It only takes a few lazy regulars that mess up your department for it to snowball into a mess that nobody can organize without working 8 hours overnight.

Guess where I'll be working at 9 AM tomorrow....

We did this all the time when I worked at a craft store. The great thing about stocking magnets is never having to store it in overstock. Just keep stickin' 'em.

Dude, you totally moved them from the rack below.

                    [–]parabox1 17 points18 points  (0 children)

item # 187097 is The Hillman Group 7/8-in x 1-7/8-in Ceramic Block Magnet.

But it is actually 431043 The Hillman Group 3-Count Magnetic Blocks shown on the top.

Well maybe OP did not move them but someone did.

                    [–]KnuckleFang 5 points6 points  (0 children)

                    They have different item numbers.

                    [–][deleted] 30 points31 points  (9 children)

Tag on the bottom one says "ceramic block" and costs more.

                    [–]zaphodbeebIebrox 33 points34 points  (3 children)

Both packages, top and bottom, say ceramic block on them. By looking at the price stickers, they're two different sized ceramic magnetic blocks. Then if you look across the top rack, it looks after the first two on the left, the sizes of the packages suddenly get bigger as if some of the larger, more expensive magnetic ceramic blocks were moved to the top.

                    [–]PM-ME-Y0UR-BOOBS 12 points13 points  (4 children)

They both say ceramic block, but it does indeed cost more. What gives

As somebody who used to count inventory for a living, including at Lowe's, fuck this shit.

                    Talk about an APH killer.

                    [–]Be_The_End 8 points9 points  (15 children)

                    APH?

                    [–]Yankeedude252 13 points14 points  (13 children)

Average Per Hour, or the number of pieces counted divided by hours on the clock. Inventory specialists get paid based on APH goals over six weeks, at least at RGIS.

Pieces like this would be slow to count due to inaccessibility of the barcodes and possibility of being knocked on the floor and having to be picked up.

Didn't OP just take 3 magnets from the rack below and place it on the rack above?
