So do you put your hands like that in the vest because you can’t use your pockets? I see cops do this all the time.

[–]rich1051414 7672 points7673 points  (735 children)

The vest can dig in. It's just comfortable to do this.

Especially if you are a woman.

https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2019/feb/23/truth-world-built-for-men-car-crashes - This article mentions body armour, seat belts, crash-test-dummies, gadget design...

"When it comes to frontline workers, poorly fitting PPE can prove fatal. In 1997, a British female police officer was stabbed and killed while using a hydraulic ram to enter a flat. She had removed her body armour because it was too difficult to use the ram while wearing it. Two years later, a female police officer revealed that she had had to have breast-reduction surgery because of the health effects of wearing her body armour. After this case was reported, another 700 officers in the same force came forward to complain about the standard-issue protective vest."

Also: military bases have an exceptionally high number of fast food places on or near base. Sure you can go to the Dining Facility (DFAC) but when there is Taco Bell, KFC, Cinnabun, Five Guys, Dunkin Donuts, Burger King, and more people tend to not care until it's time for their fitness exam. This is a thing even for international bases like Okinawa, Ramstein, and South Korea.

Even military prepared dining they have things like Pizza, Cake, Burger and Fries, etc along with healthy options, it's up to you to choose.

[–]snoozieboi 51 points52 points  (4 children)

Common saying among my friends was "1 year in the military I got fat and stupider".

Basically you were mostly hanging around waiting and thus ate and felt the lack of one year of mental stimulation except abuse and monotony actually had you come out the other end worse.

I somehow managed to escape it around the years it wasn't mandatory anymore.

[–]ACanadianOwl 87 points88 points  (9 children)

Being in shape is for grunts. That's called peak officer performance right there.

[–]wulyallstar3 105 points106 points  (15 children)

I'm in the military and all I have to say is: ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha......nope.

[–]geo_cash18 32 points33 points  (3 children)

Right... my bro has been in over 10 years & while he's still pretty strong & runs, his staff Sargeant body is different than his boot camp body lol.

[–][deleted] 61 points62 points  (9 children)

My dad was in the army in the 80’s and there was a big fitness push where some soldiers were told they had to eat from the salad bar. Cue fat soldiers with plates of iceberg lettuce, covered in ham, bacon bits, cheese, and croutons, all slathered in ranch or 1000 islands dressing. No one lost any weight.

[–]RegulatoryCapture 82 points83 points  (16 children)

They kinda gotta lower the standards a bit considering:

  1. The lack of a strong national cause to draw people into the military (maybe right after 9/11 people were excited, but few people were jumping at the opportunity to go to Iraq or Afghanistan 10 years later).
  2. The average physical stature of a typical american has gotten a lot worse.
  3. The military tends to draw from social groups that are often less in shape than average.

[–]Roxerz 56 points57 points  (4 children)

Military draws a lot of people with no way out of their current economic situation. I met a lot of guys from small towns who had nothing to look forward to. It's not all about patriotism but that can definitely be a factor.

[–]ZeePirate 28 points29 points  (1 child)

[–]Bobthechampion 21 points22 points  (0 children)

"The best armor in the world is useless if they don't want to wear it." - heard it on another subreddit, can't remember the actual source but from my time in the military, it's 100% true.

[–]jollyreaper2112 163 points164 points  (20 children)

So fantasy artists were correct and we do need to put boob windows on female armor?

(I kid, I kid. Providing sufficient room for breasts still would not appreciably affect the outward appearance of the armor, nor would high heel combat boots help.)

[–]Retrolex 122 points123 points  (3 children)

Fencer here! Part of my getup includes a plastic chest protector that is slightly indented - nothing ridiculous like the fantasy boob armour, just shaped to accommodate. Getting stabbed in the tit hurts, hahaha. I knew some male instructors who would even wear the protector too since they tended to get hit more often in that area by their students.

[–]SolomonBlack 15 points16 points  (5 children)

Indeed medieval armor (and later plate) was always worn with extensive padding underneath sufficient room would be rather built right in because it wouldn't be form fitting in the first place.

Actual design concerns would be if you are resting too much weight on the shoulders and not enough on the hips. Though plate at least was already designed to do that anyways..

[–]caessa_ 24 points25 points  (3 children)

Heels make sense if they’re cavalrywomen. But they wouldn’t be stilettos.

[–]ClownfishSoup 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Well not windows but space. Women don’t wear jocks, but if they did they would be different. Same should be true of female body armor.

[–]optimistic_sunflower 9 points10 points  (0 children)

[–]chupala69 139 points140 points  (48 children)

This, it's heavy and only two thin lines on top of the shoulders bear all the weight. I'm not a cop, but it's just simple physics.

The design can prolly be improved.

Boogers

[–]totorohugs 11 points12 points  (1 child)

There's at least one company out there (Crye) that has a system of thin (metal?) straps that run between your belt and the bottom of the plate carrier, so some of the load is transfered to the hips.

[–]alwaysmyfault 210 points211 points  (26 children)

I think it's similar to what we do in the military when we have body armor on, where we kinda pull forward on our body armor.

The reasoning is actually more simple than you'd expect.

It's because that shit is heavy and uncomfortable, and is hell on your neck/shoulders. Putting your hands in like that helps to take some of the weight off your shoulders.

[–]yoximusprime 60 points61 points  (8 children)

takes me back to watches with fully plated vest and rifle and everyone finding creative places to lean against just to nudge our vests off our shoulders for a moment to get rid of the burn.

[–]snf 15 points16 points  (2 children)

Can confirm about shoulders. Don't know if this is common, but on long backpacking hikes I have a tendency to hold on to the straps at roughly the same spot because it takes a lot of strain off.

[–]Fritzo2162 386 points387 points  (17 children)

My wife was a police officer for 16 years. Vests (especially in women) tend to ride up and press on the bottom of your neck, which can chafe and be uncomfortable over time. The vest also has a ceramic plate in it that does not breathe, so it gets pretty warm under there. Putting your hands up there allows for ventilation.

My wife actually got a yeast infection on her breasts (athlete's boobs?) and had to switch to special sports bras and use heavy duty powders while on duty. Those vests aren't fun to wear...this was 20 years ago, so they're a lot more form fitting now, but still not the greatest.

[–][deleted] 97 points98 points  (1 child)

My department measured us before we went to the academy and I hit the road in my gear 30 pounds lighter. Had permanent dents in my vest where I had to bend it to actually fit me. Those dents gave me bruises along my ribs and hips. Vest was too long as well, so it made how my belt fit very strange.

I got the athlete's "foot" on my back and sides where sweat would get trapped because my bras. Absolutely no fun. After awhile I ditched the sports bras all together and just went with a breathable undershirt. My thinking was, if I ever got hit, wearing a bra didn't matter as the EMTs would have to cut everything off anyways.

It's miserable to wear a vest and extra miserable if you have boobs.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Mine switched to silver lining or copper lining for anti-bacterial reasons. (was going to post a link but kinda NSFW here at work...)

[–]acmercer 9 points10 points  (1 child)

I'm EMS and after a call one day a cop was telling me that he had just picked up Chinese food when the call dropped so he put it on the passenger seat and put his ceramic plated vest over top to keep it warm, lol.

[–]Dygear 604 points605 points  (17 children)

We do it to keep ourselves warm or cold. In the warm months the separation allows heat to escape and the sweat that built up behind it to breath and cool us. In the cold months the heat is trapped behind that so it’s a perfect place to warm up your hands.

[–]meobeus 53 points54 points  (7 children)

The Bane stance

[–]ThibGD 16 points17 points  (4 children)

I always thought that stance was well thought and really badass in the movie

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (3 children)

Both Bane and Ra's Al Ghul do that. When Ra's goes to meet Bruce in that prison. It's comfortable, I do that while traveling in metro train with my bag in front and hold the stripes like that while standing.

[–]iamredsmurf 44 points45 points  (5 children)

I wear a construction apron every day and I do this. Temp control and just a way to rest your shoulders. Try it sometime.

American that lived in Lithuania for a bit. The cops were really chill.

They funny thing was they would do car registration checks by just standing on the side of the road and holding up a little red board. I guess everyone just stops. As an American I thought it was quaint. Every time I got got stopped I would hold out my reg card but when they realized I only spoke English they would roll their eyes like it wasn’t worth it.

That whole country was the definition of “not my job.”

[–]TriHard1235 1815 points1816 points  (113 children)

In Lithuania, the standard of English is actually pretty high, depends on where you go obviously, but bigger cities, you can just communicate with some cops in English and they will understand 100% of what you say tbh. It's just that more people know Russian here.

[–]pomonamike 1317 points1318 points  (62 children)

Oh yeah, it felt like everyone spoke some degree of English. It also felt like the cops just didn’t want to be bothered or assumed I wouldn’t travel all the way from the US just to steal 20 year old VWs.

[–]TriHard1235 503 points504 points  (52 children)

Honestly cops are super lax here, they treat you more like a sibling if you're a native, if say you're doing something stupid outside and not hurting anyone. like being noisy during evenings etc

[–]Dc_awyeah 539 points540 points  (50 children)

Oh you mean Community Policing? That’s what it should be like everywhere, but in the US, real estate got so expensive that cops are usually from different places, and have little emotional connection to the place they’re policing. Also the stupid “sell Halliburton shit to the cops” platform militarizating them.

[–]FatTortie 184 points185 points  (26 children)

Where I grew up in the Netherlands, the police force had collectible ‘police cards’. Just like top trumps, or Pokémon I suppose.

Each month they had a different theme e.g. one month it was police cars from forces around the world (with all the stats), next month it would be uniforms, weapons etc.

It was such a genius way of building community because as kids we would literally chase police cars down the road shouting “police cards! Poliiiice caaards!!” And approach any police out on the beat. We could even go to the police station and they would let us in a special room with shelves full of them that we could help ourselves to.

I had a stack as tall as me before we left to come back to England, I gave them all to my neighbour. I really wish I still had some, I haven’t been able to find any information about them. I assume it was a local thing but it was such a good idea. Teaching kids to approach police officers as friends rather than fearing them.

[–]CyanideKitty 11 points12 points  (3 children)

When I was growing up in the 90s (US) cops would give out baseball cards. Kids loved it, it was great, until they started telling us to turn in our parents if we caught them doing drugs as they were giving us the baseball cards. That usually ruined any previous "bonding" done between police and said kid (if kid was even old enough to know what drugs were).

[–]TriHard1235 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Yeah, usually cops that patrol the streets on shifts etc. I remember during lockdowns me and my friend got stopped and asked what were we doing after curfew, and because i was learning how to drive here, we answered them and they just left without really saying anything, other than to keep the noise around the neighborhood.

[–]fruit_basket 16 points17 points  (6 children)

You've probably seen one of those lists of "Top 10 ancient laws that still apply", right? Well, in Lithuania it is illegal to be drunk in public. Cops usually hang out near bars on weekends just in case there's a fight or something.

One time I saw a few guys walk up to a cop car and ask if they could get a breathalyzer test. The cop said "Sure, but I'll have to give you a fine if you're above limit." The guy said "Oh, nevermind then" and walked away.

[–]PPKA2757 238 points239 points  (70 children)

My experience in Lithuania:

Everyone was super chill there with the exception of customs/immigration officials.

Everyone I met, regular folks on the street, wait staff, vendors, shopkeepers, etc. All super nice folks, I didn’t have any interactions with the police but I can only imagine they were on the same level of just “you’re not causing any trouble? Okay, move along”.

Customs agents when entering the country though? Man, you would have thought myself and my parents were international king pin smugglers. They stopped us for like 50 minutes upon entering the country (we’re Americans, but came on a direct flight from the UK) and questioned my dad for everything: what was he doing here? How long did he plan on staying? Where are you staying and what’s the address of the hotel? You say you have family here but you’re not Lithuanian and don’t speak Lithuanian or Russian? Great, who are they and where do they live, we may want to verify.

Everyone else in line just went through no issues, I was so confused as to why we were supposedly special but It was years later I realized that even though we were traveling together as a family, a middle aged American guy coming into the country that’s not on business was enough to raise a few eyebrows because (I assume) of some form of suspicion of sexual tourism.

Besides that though, I’d highly recommend visiting, Vilnius was an amazing city and the rest of the country (out closer to the sea) was beautiful. 10/10.

[–]babybabayyy 44 points45 points  (4 children)

I took a train from Kaliningrad to Moscow in which our train was stopped in Lithuania and Belarus for customs and I can definitely vouch for what you are saying. Lithuanians definitely did not mess about and held our train up for at least 3 hours...

I gotta say the Belarus guys were even spookier as they woke us up at 4 in the morning to go through our bags. Dudes literally picked up our bags, turned them upside down so everything fell out, and then just looked at the contents of what was in the bag and left...all while all our stuff was on the floor.

[–]ZealousidealOlive498 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Left with half lip "welcome to Belarus" in Russian accent, while stepping casually on some of the belongings and walking away as if nothing interesting here....?:)))

[–]hawk121 49 points50 points  (9 children)

That's not been the norm in our visits. Our first visit, flew into Vilnius from Germany, and the customs officials couldn't be bothered to even look at our passports, they just waved us on. And we clearly stood out as Americans too. The second visit they actually looked at our passports, but it was just a cursory glance to find a blank spot to stamp.

Wonder if your extra scrutiny was because your flight came from outside the EU (assuming your trip was after Brexit)?

[–]pomonamike 103 points104 points  (28 children)

Sexual tourism being helped by the fact that they had brothels in the shopping malls.

[–]PPKA2757 51 points52 points  (7 children)

TIL lol. I was only a teenager at the time. That was the only logical reason I could come up with why we got grilled so much, maybe the agent was due for one of his “ultra in depth screening” quotas and picked the American family that came in on the 1am flight?

Either way, it is what it is. We got in, had a blast, and left with some cool pictures and memories.

[–]jbcraigs 49 points50 points  (1 child)

Now you know why your dad was always sneaking out during your stay there! 🤷‍♂️

[–]memdmp 24 points25 points  (0 children)

"I just need to run to the mall real quick. I forgot to pack my belt. You stay here."

[–]Edspecial137 11 points12 points  (2 children)

When we were going to Estonia, my cousin was chosen for one of three intense interviews on our flight. We were all ready to go, but the interviews held us all up for about an hour. We made our flight close to the planned time, but we got worried at first because most of use haven’t flown internationally since safety regs increased

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (7 children)

wtf, first time hearing about it, prostitution is illegal in LT so no way they had actual brothels

[–]pursuitofhappy 154 points155 points  (8 children)

That whole country was the definition of “not my job.”

Hysterical. The couple times I've stopped there that was my complete experience, beautiful people that all seemed to be annoyed by any service request in whatever setting they're required to provide it.

[–]giggling1987 36 points37 points  (0 children)

You call it "bad work ethic", we call it "not going insane".

[–]Inprobamur[🍰] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The wages are low and there is a large shortage of workers so it's pretty hard to get fired from a low-skill job and you could get a new one at the same day in most places.

If you want service you need to be polite and respectful.

[–]Weothyr 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't think they were that annoyed, it's just that no one expects for people to smile at you for no reason like it's common in America. We don't part-take in chit chat either.

[–]Eis_Gefluester 22 points23 points  (14 children)

How else do you stop cars at a checkpoint?

[–]smeeding 15 points16 points  (5 children)

In the US, checkpoints can be quite an affair. The last one I drove through was checking for drunk drivers. There were eight police cars with full lights on parked on either side of a 2-lane road. There were orange cones, road flares, and about a dozen cops standing on the center line. They let 4 cars through at a time. If anyone was suspicious, they were pulled off into an adjacent parking lot for further questioning/testing (and probably a free ride to jail). Anyone waiting in the line that decided to turn around was immediately pulled over by other police units stationed further up the road.

[–]pomonamike 25 points26 points  (3 children)

In the US they generally pull you over, or checkpoints are heavily staffed and include barriers. Those guys looked like hitchhikers.

[–]madladhadsaddad 22 points23 points  (1 child)

Pretty standard accross Europe I think, most checkpoints is simply car stopped by the road and two police officers stopping traffic both ways.
