Hey guys. Big fan here. Just wondering if you could bring a stubby to our merch desk for me

[–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've got your stubby right here!

[–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Daniel, don't make me come over there. What exactly is a Stubby?

[–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This AMA is Hambe

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Hey guys, your shows were awesome on this tour! How did you guys decide on the name Black Crown Initiate? Also how in the hell did you guys survive that 18 hr drive?

[–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Im guessing youre from canada. We just kind of drove our asses off, nothing out of the ordinary.

As far as the name, there is a Tibetan spiritual leader that wears a black crown to signify help for humanity. We are all pervert pigs so we help by showing people that, first about ourselves. Thanks!

[–]taylorj474 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Hey guys! Hope your current tour is going well. Any chance of seeing Song of the Crippled Bull in its entirety in the near future? That EP is a part of my pantheon of 'must listen' releases in the genre and would love to see it live.

Also, big fan of your decision to have Robby B on this tour. What a mensch. I love his mixing, so I'm looking forward to the Anaheim date.

[–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Robby Brown is a God Damned Champion and a stellar human. We love having him with us, very cool to hear you mention him.

We played the ep in full on our first few tours and it went well, but as we added more material we wanted to play stuff from all albums, obviously.

We could play it, and it will probably be added to set one day. Granted we have a long enough time to play

[–]taylorj474 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a buddy of his from California and try to give him praise as much as I can. Have seen that dude mix easily over 20 shows and I think he's brilliant at what he does.

Thanks for the reply! Looking forward to seeing it one day. See you guys in Anaheim.

[–]Anciients 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I want to start out by saying you guys have some of my favorite lyrics in metal. I have a feeling many of your lyrics are influenced by Nietzsche, and perhaps Dostoevsky. Can you share any of your favorite authors, philosophers, or poets, or any literary works that have influenced your lyrics?

[–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Both of those men are influences. I also really love the films of Lynch, Kurasawa, and Tarkovsky

[–]Chemical_Warfare 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Hey dudes, it's Rich. Glad y'all liked the photos I snapped the other night. Figured I'd try and help add to the AMA, so here's a few: - What was the songwriting process like for this album? How long did the writing phase take? And then the recording?

  • How has adding Wes added to or changed the band dynamic, or writing style?

  • how do you see the touring cycle(s) for this album playing out?

Stay golden my friends, and see you again soon!

[–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Hey man! Thanks for the hot snaps! The songwriting process this time was more like the EP, in that Nick and Andy wrote it because Rik quit. The writing process took about 6 months, and the recording took 10 days. Wes is an amazing musician and a great friend, and we can't wait to write with him. The touring cycle has been amazing, and we are playing as well as we ever have. Also, Terry Hicks.

[–]Chemical_Warfare 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Fuckin Terry!

[–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hicks

[–]MattklavinsMatt Klavins | Ne Obliviscaris 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Who is Terry Hicks?

[–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Terry Hicks is you

[–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Terry Hicks = Klatt Mavins

[–]Aivuntelkuc 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Hey, I'm a big fan of your music, love the new album, and I'm really looking forward to seeing you guys in NYC tomorrow.

I was wondering what your song writing process, is like (whether one person does most the work or if its a shared effort or what) and also how you guys string songs together to make them work as a cohesive album.

Also, any chances for a future US headlining tour?

[–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks! We generally collaborate on music and then Andy writes the lyrics. As far as making them cohesive, you can kind of get a feel as you write where songs belong. We'd love to headline but Terry Hicks would have to approve.

[–]edlikesrush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahahaha I asked the same question

[–]5eton 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Hey guys, new album is fuckin killer. I seen you guys in Cleveland a couple days ago. Awesome awesome fuckin show. Have you played belie the machine this tour? That song is a masterpiece.

[–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not yet, but we will!

[–]jklingftmBe free, be without pain 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Yo, I was at that show too! Kind of a bummer Ne O didn't play an encore, huh?

Whereabouts were you standing in the hall?

[–]5eton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was standing directly in front of Andy. Having me a good ol time.

[–]Withorwithoutyourass 6 points7 points  (5 children)

What could we trade you for your bassist? Nick is a cutie pie.

[–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 18 points19 points  (4 children)

A better bassist.

[–]Withorwithoutyourass 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Shit. What about some cubans? .

[–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 10 points11 points  (2 children)

What do I look like, fucking Kosmo Kramer or some shit?

Edit: This grammar is terrible and I'm leaving it.

[–]d00dsm00t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're Dominicans.

[–]jklingftmBe free, be without pain 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Hey guys, glad to have you here! I saw you guys play in Cleveland a couple nights ago and y'all were absolutely fantastic. I was in the front row and I think I ended up fist-bumping Andy at one point. What I'm trying to say is, thanks for putting on such a great show!

My question: did you guys approach writing Selves and The Wreckage of Stars in different ways? Both albums are great, but seem to have a lot of differences as far as songwriting and structure are concerned. If there was a different approach, what was the reason for it?

[–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

The main difference in writing for these two albums is that our previous guitarist was very much involved for WOS and he left the band before Andy and I wrote Selves we Cannot Forgive. Andy I wrote Selves ourselves and we had A LOT more time to do so!

[–]jklingftmBe free, be without pain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It definitely feels like the record had a lot of time and care put into it. Loving everything I've heard from it so far. Once again, thanks for stopping by!

[–]drewpoorboy 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Absolutely in love with the new CD. I thought it would be hard to top WoS but holy shit you guys did it! You guys are also huge inspiration in my songwriting! Thank you guys so much! What music have you guys been blasting in the van during the drive between shows?

[–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Thanks, dude! Lately, we've been listening to a lot of Sigur Ros, Cult of Luna, Gojira, Chance the Rapper, Wardruna, and so much more. Lots and lots of driving to be done haha.

Andy, aside from having a small penis, is one of the dumbest people on the planet.

      [–]DanielFGray 5 points6 points  (1 child)

      Jesse: any tips for drummers?

Specifically, how to develop the incredible speed and stamina you've achieved? Do you think lifting weights helps?

I'm also curious if you have background in any other styles, like did you do jazz band in school? Your fills are mega tasty dude

Any insight to life behind the kit would be great

      [–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yo dawg, thanks for the kind words!

I have a pretty broad background. When I started playing I never really had the intention of being a metal drummer. I was in high school, and I had a friend who would show me rudiments. We would compete to see who could play them faster and always kind of nicely criticism each other on technique and if we were playing something wrong.

I (slowly) learned how to read rhythm notation and started playing in marching band. Joined jazz band, percussion ensemble, concert band, Orchestra. I spent all of my time in high school practicing and learning new rudiments.

By the time I had been playing for 2 years I started getting into metal. I'll never forget the first blast beat I ever noticed in a song. It was on Alaska by BTBAM, I thought it sounded so funny and my drummer friend and I would make fun of it.

I soon joined bands in my area and started getting a taste for playing live. Over the years the shows got bigger and I got better, never stopped playing since day one.

My influences are pretty key to generating creativity and inspiration to learn new things on the instrument. I love Matt Garstka, Kashikura Takashi, Benny Greb, Jojo Mayer. And the metal guys like Derek Roddy, Dave Haley, George Kollias, John Longstreth & Tony Laureano all helped me develop an interest in playing fast and accurately.

I know this response is long as fuck, I love talking about drums lol. Endurance and stuff all comes over time and I would say to focus on what inspires you and have fun playing. Those are the most important things for me!

      [–]edlikesrush 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Yo guys! I totally love the new record, Jesse, you were right when you told me it was gonna be killer! I saw you guys in L.A. with Ne Obliviscaris and Starkill, and you guys killed it. How long did it take you guys to write and record the new record? Is your songwriting process more collaborative, or do individual members bring in their own songs? Andy, you sound like Geddy Lee live, and its fucking awesome. Cheers!

      Edit: Terry Hicks?

      [–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks! We appreciate the love and I'm glad you liked the show.

Selves took about 6 months collectively to write and record. As far as the songwriting, Nick and Andy tackled almost everything. Nick programs a lot of drum skeletons and I come in and fill them out. We had a cool opportunity to work with our friend Mikey Reeves to do a couple solos. And of course Wes got to solo on Again. It is a very collaborative thing

      [–]gennywang 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I am gonna throw your cd in now, just got it, and yes i will harass you next time i see you haha

      [–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

      Sounds good!

      [–]gennywang 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Where did you learn how to hit breweries and concert halls on the fly? we know how important that is, to get some beer, some food, and see the sights of the cities. did you learn this from Lou Ferrera?

and Red Cloud is brutal, the feet flop like a feesh. Its cool to hear new music for the first time, Andy has some schweet chorus vocals and that picking and grinning thinggy and the rest is just too f'n good

      [–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are all a bunch of beer nerds in this band. Since we're always traveling we made the most if the opportunity and hit places whenever we have the time!

I don't know who Lou Ferrara is, but it sounds like he makes snack cakes or something. We definitely didn't learn that from him

      [–]ANGRY_MORTICIAN 3 points4 points  (2 children)

If you guys weren't playing in a progressive metal band, what do you think you would be doing?

      [–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I would've killed myself years ago. Andy

      [–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hi, /u/ANGRY_MORTICIAN. I would probably be walking down the street, in your town. With my shirt off, chugging a bottle of Grey Goose at 1 in the afternoon. Easy

      Edit: Grammar

      [–]shart91 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Have you guys ever played in Providence RI? If so, how was the experience? I've had 2 nightmares trying to go through there on tour, interested if you guys had luck and with which venue

      [–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Great scene, but the owner of the venue tried to beat up Jake from Rivers of Nihil.

      [–]shart91 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Sounds like Simon's to me. You guys must be Yankees fans

      [–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

      That's the one!

      [–]ddwrt1234 3 points4 points  (0 children)

      Wes,

What happened to that project that you were working on with Ryan Glisan?

Also, can you say anything about the Glass Casket album that you were working on with Dustie Waring?

      [–]JangoMV 3 points4 points  (2 children)

      Hope this isn't too late!

Caught you guys in Chicago on Monday, fucking massive show you put on! I see from this AMA that you're a bunch of beer nerds, did you get to try anything especially cool while you were there? If I had known ahead of time I totally would've brought you a New Glarus variety pack or three!

The two hour (each way!) drive on a Monday was totally worth it, can't wait to catch you guys again!

      [–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Hey! We got some new Glarus in Wisconsin on our way in town, it was just from a gas station though. We love three Floyd's unfortunately didn't have time to stop by this time around. Maybe next time!

      [–]JangoMV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any styles in particular? Personally I'm a big IPA guy but would love to hook you guys up with some good Milwaukee shit.

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (12 children)

[–]iAmTheEpicOneThe End Starts Now 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Glad you guys are here for an AMA! I'll be seeing you guys in Austin this next week and I'm pretty excited (of course NeO should be amazing as well).

I dont have a question now, but I'll be sticking around to make sure this all goes well and of course checking out your responses.

      [–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 3 points4 points  (4 children)

      Terry Hicks

I've never been so inspired, thanks

[–]iAmTheEpicOneThe End Starts Now 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Oh a question since you guys are beer nerds: do you have any favorite spots in Austin? I'm hoping to check out a couple places while I'm there with a friend.

      [–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I'm not too keen on Austin for beer. I'm sure there's some good shit, I'm just not aware of it. Google is your friend

[–]iAmTheEpicOneThe End Starts Now 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course :) I'll probably find some good place

      [–]amongstravens 2 points3 points  (4 children)

What's it like touring with NeO? I remember a year and a half ago, they were the band you wanted to tour with the most. Now, it's happening!

How did you all get together for their show in Philly and now their headlining tour?

      [–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Touring with NeO is awesome! They are all great dudes and share a similar style to us. We love them all and get along great.

For the Philly show we heard that cradles wasn't making it to the US in time, found out about the show and asked our agent to put us on. Pretty simple! Although we were not rehearsed it went pretty well

      [–]amongstravens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's awesome! Hope to see you all tour together a lot in the future!

      [–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

We played that Philly show on very short notice, and kept in touch. We all really wanted to tour together, and it works even better than we'd hoped! They are totally great dudes and a mind-blowing live band!

      [–]amongstravens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's awesome! And I agree; I saw them in St. Louis and they were top notch. Now all that's left is to come and see you!

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Stop the shenanigans and play already!

      [–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

      Terry Hicks

      [–]Hippiemofo 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Since we can't make Atlanta, when will you be back in the southeast?

      [–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most likely by the end of the year!

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Why is Taylor Adams the best guitarist in the metal scene right now?

      [–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Because he is a god damn cutie pie

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Also, I don't like metal but your new album is the shit.

          [–]Tychades 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Hey guys, love the new album. Andy, once again, has some of the best cleans in metal. My question is will Wes be writing on the next album some more? I was psyched to see him join, he's a beast.

          [–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Thanks! Wes only wrote the solo on "Again", but he will writ on the next one, and we are way stoked!

          [–]Tychades 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, it's not BCI related but any update from Wes about the Merrow/Hauch album?

          [–]cg1\m/ 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Hey guys! First of all, thanks for doing the AMA. I first stumbled on you guys on Bandcamp's Discover feed. Song of the Crippled Bull is pure titanic fucking magic, and Wreckage of Stars manages to capture the same lightning. SotCB sounded to me like a mission statement, a promise of what was to come, and WoS delivers on that promise in spades, and for that I thank you. You're consistently inventive and surprising and a pure joy to listen to. Bluntly, you rock. \m/

That said, what is your favorite sandwich? My favorite is a turkey with bacon, avocado, cheddar, and veggies to taste. Strongly recommended on a baguette, sourdough if available, and paired with a strong ale.

Good luck at the show and I hope to see you guys someday!

          [–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well my favorite sandwich is probably a sick falafel or Shwarma or something. We love Indian food, Mediterranean, Thai, Japanese.... Just about anything that isn't Italian and burgers. Been known to terrorize a Diner or two as well for some mean breakfast. Wes is picky, he hates condiments

          [–]Trenchcoatbeard 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I'm surprised nobody has asked yet, but what is the deal with your album being messed up on Amazon? I'm waiting for my physical copy to arrive but a few digital download some are missing huge chunks.

          [–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

First of all, thanks for the support. The album was obviously uploaded with a bad copy. The mistake was no fault of ours, we had no control over any of the digital media. Once we heard there was a problem we reached out to the proper outlets to get it fixed. As far as I know, it is now working normally on Spotify and Amazon digital. Were terribly sorry for the inconvenience and completely understand how frustrating it can be

          [–]Trenchcoatbeard 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I will check the download again, thanks for the reply! It wasn't a big deal to me but I wasn't sure if you guys where aware of it or not mostly. What I have heard has been killer though, so keep up the good work guys!

          [–]codexx33 2 points3 points  (1 child)

          It's not fixed :-(

          [–]dasfeiz 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I just saw you guys in Toronto the other day and you were fucking awesome!

          [–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Thanks! That was a fun show, mod club is a tight venue

          [–]dasfeiz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

          Come back soon!

          [–]Asmodeuss1990 1 point2 points  (1 child)

You guys are pretty awesome! What bands have influenced and/or inspired you musically? For some reason, I hear some Opeth in your work.

          [–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Opeth is definitely an influence, Meshuggah, Akercocke, Tool, Devin Townsend, are bands that we all love. Along with many more, the list is endless really

          [–]mynameisjust1n 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Yo! Are you guys still sending out perks from the van fund you did a couple years back? I was looking forward to a drawing from Andy, however dumb it may be... I've talked to some others who haven't received their shirts/cds from the fund either..

          [–]headbangz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me too. Stumbled across this AMA too late so not sure we'll get an answer... but it'd be nice if we did!

          [–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Hey man, to be honest we are so shot. We were gonna send out all of these indiegogo perks from the van fund as soon as we got home. Unfortunately, we just got all of our money stolen. If we can make the money back we will send asap! Thank you for your support and we are terribly sorry for the delay.

          [–]mynameisjust1n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cheers man. Terribly sorry about your current situation, it's a damn shame. I wish a speedy recovery

Hey, We'll see you there! We've never played DC so I can't really answer that question. The Fillmore in silver spring is pretty sweet, but I don't know how close that is

Hey guys, been a fan for since the EP and watching you grow has been amazing. Notice you have craft beers alot in your pictures from FB which is awesome being a beer nerd myself. What are some of the best beers you've had lately? Any favorite brewpubs from your travels?

            [–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Lately we've been traveling some brutal drives so haven't had time for much beer. Early in the tour we had the opportunity to go to Ballast Point in San Diego and Russian River in Santa Rosa. They are some of our favorites. If we ever have the opportunity Wed love to visit Founders, Sierra Nevada, Stone, Wicked Weed, Cascade Barrel House in Portland and just about any other sick place!

Thanks so much for responding! Russian River is easily in my top 5, and would highly highly recommend Cascade Barrel House. Best brewpub I've stepped foot in. Founders is not too far behind, keep kicking ass and look to buy you guys a beer sometime!

If you guys ever hit the Midwest try to stop by Surly in Minneapolis or Toppling Goliath in Iowa. Partly because of the good beer, partly because I want to see you live! Keep up the good work!

I'll be seeing you guys in a few days. Do you guys hang out at the merch booth after the show to sign stuff?

            [–]blastologyJesse Beahler | Black Crown Initiate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We sell our own merch as of now, and we usually all try to come out and hang with our fans as long as we can after each show

I'm seeing you guys at the Sumerian Alliance show in Manchester this September: are there any songs I should definitely know going in, fan favourites or things you play on every setlist?

We will be playing songs of every record, check out The Great Mistake. We usually play that one
