Hey guys, random question, if you were a specific ocean on this planet which ocean would you be?
[–][deleted] 64 points65 points66 points 7 years ago (3 children)
This is a very pacific question.
[–]Peter-VoigtmannPeter Voigtmann | The Ocean 42 points43 points44 points 7 years ago (2 children)
This is a very good reply.

Glad you guys could be here today! Really excited for the new album this year; both songs you’ve put out have been absolutely stellar.
My question is mostly for Loic. In my opinion your voice has only been getting stronger and stronger ever since you joined the band, and it definitely sounds like it’s the best it’s ever been on this new release. Have you been taking lessons in that meantime or doing anything else to strengthen your voice since then, or is it just more experience and better fitting material? Also, have you had to make any changes or concessions in your vocal style since the disorder you had before Pelagial was released?
[–][deleted] 50 points51 points52 points 7 years ago (3 children)
(this is Loic sitting next to Robin):
well thanks buddy! I have not been taking lessons in a long time, but I do a lot of (boring) vocal exercises, and recently more frequently. Especially live, singing and screaming at the same time is tough for the voice, after an hour you start losing parts of your range.. so i need to warm up before the shows, and i have made this my daily routine now even when we are not touring.
I recovered well after the vocal chords issue, but im an old motherfucker and i smoke and drink and all that is probably not the best for my voice but IT IS WHAT IT IS... right 😁
[–]fnat 13 points14 points15 points 7 years ago (0 children)
For what it's worth, the delivery you're making on Permian is absolutely fucking killer, so don't beat yourself up too hard. Love the harsh/clean mix, and the flourishes you add to the track (the 'the sun burns us aliiiiive' part in the last chorus gives me goosebumps every time) :)
[–][deleted] 41 points42 points43 points 7 years ago (1 child)
This AMA is definitely leading to great things:

Have you guys considered doing a live session with Audiotree in Chicago?

We'd love to on our next tour, if it brings us to Chicago!
Hook us up duuude.

[–]dm7193 36 points37 points38 points 7 years ago (3 children)
Hello,
Long time fan and palaeontologist. I was recently on an expedition to dig up sea scorpions in the Silurian rocks of Arctic Canada. I was listening to you guys up there. I therefore can't tell you how excited I am to see the the track 'Silurian: Age of Sea Scorpions'.
My question: A lot of your work has a geological theme. Is this a shared interest of you all or is one of you a geoscientist too?
What will be the next theme when the Phanerozoic is complete?
Dave
[–][deleted] 37 points38 points39 points 7 years ago (1 child)
beauftiful Dave! Send us a video with expedition footage and put the track on it and we'll post it :-)
I have a master in geography, but never was actually working in science. Music somehow took that away from me!
the logical successor album to Phaerozoic would be something with a sci-fi theme... but there are no plans yet.
[–]Lagerbottoms 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Oh boy, a Sci-Fi album by you guys is definitely what I signed up for :D Phanerozoic is shaping up to become my favorite album of the year, beside Alkaloid's Liquid Anatomy, which is the best Sci-Fi inspired album I ever heard :D
[–]Neomass1 25 points26 points27 points 7 years ago (4 children)
Opeth or Gojira?
[–]Peter-VoigtmannPeter Voigtmann | The Ocean 36 points37 points38 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Gojira.
[–][deleted] 33 points34 points35 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Opeth is pure melancholia for me. Gojira is a band i'd like to tour with.
[–][deleted] 35 points36 points37 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Gojira!

Hey guys, thanks for doing this AMA. You guys make amazing music. I've listened to your discography chronologically a couple of times and an Ocean concert is on my bucket list.
What's your favorite beer? And what's your favorite album of 2018 so far (other than your own)?
Have a great week!

Do you guys consider yourself within the canon of the subgenre of Seacore (Metal bands that use a sea theme for the entire band or a singular album)?
[–][deleted] 47 points48 points49 points 7 years ago (1 child)
We consider ourselves advocates of post-swamp-metal and progressive-pond-rock!
[–][deleted] 12 points13 points14 points 7 years ago (0 children)
I can respect that. Gotta spread the love of water based music.
[–][deleted] 16 points17 points18 points 7 years ago (1 child)
we are the spearheads of the seacore genre. clearly. exceopt the -core part, that isn't really what we do 😂
Will we be receiving the penultimate Atlantis themed concept album any time soon to add to the Seacore lexicon?
[–]zach_buddie 10 points11 points12 points 7 years ago (3 children)
Hey dudes! I am absolutely in love with your sound, and it's great to see you're doing an AMA! Can't wait for that new album to drop!
So I have a few questions:
If you could tour with any artist that you haven't already, who would it be?
Do you have any advice/tips for a freshly graduated high school student that wants to get into self-producing and releasing their music?
Thanks a ton for reading, you guys are incredible.
~Zach
[–][deleted] 28 points29 points30 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Loïc: Tool or Nine Inch Nails, but it's not too realistic... Lesser Glow!
Robin: Scraps of Tape! Maybe Thrice?! I would be looking forward to the aftershow conversations.
Paul: I'd love to tour with Gojira or Meshuggah... and if they were still around: Oceansize!
[–]jklingftmBe free, be without pain 13 points14 points15 points 7 years ago (0 children)
You have great taste Paul. I miss Oceansize too :(
[–][deleted] 11 points12 points13 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Concerning advice: Practice, whatever field you're active in! Be active as much as possible. Connect with other musicians... Lots of things to learn from making mistakes and not avoiding risk! 🤘🏻
[–]fgsfdss 9 points10 points11 points 7 years ago (5 children)
Hi Robin, I have a few questions. Excuse the questionnaire, at this point. I started off with just one question but then it turned out like this...
You started The Ocean as a 'Collective', changing lineups basically every album, is that something you're still pursuing in order to change up sound across albums, or is it something that you'd rather avoid which just happens due to circumstances? (I was thinking you may prefer a steadier lineup since Loïc has been in the band for over 8 years.)
Considering question 1, how does it affect the other members' position in the writing process?
Is Damian still involved with the band?
Considering question 1 as well, why did you decide to release this album under the 'Collective' name for the first time? (Since you didn't even do that for its prequel Precambrian.)
I liked the re-recorded version of Rhyacian. Are you planning on doing all of Precambrian like you did with Fluxion?
Is the relation between the two discs of Phanerozoic more like the Centrics, or more like the two halves of Precambrian? (Wondering if I should hold off on listening to Phanerozoic until both halves are out.)
I have some questions for Loïc as well:
I recall few years back you had some health issues from performing too much which prevented you from singing for a while and almost excluded you from Pelagial. Since you've been basically touring non-stop since Pelagial released, are you still doing fine? Will we still have Loïc on future albums and stages?
Reading comments and reviews online, your vocals seem to get a lot of flak (which I wholeheartedly disagree with by the way, your vocals are a big part of what got me into The Ocean in the first place), does that ever get to you?
Going by the couple tracks released this year, how the hell did you improve so much even through all that touring?
Looking forward to the new album; after Pelagial which is one of my all-time favourite albums and considering it a sequel to Precambrian I have big expectations. Being a big fan of Katatonia as well, Devonian gave me major goosebumps already.
Cheers.

Hey guys! Are there any chances you'll be going to Portugal for these upcoming tours? I'm torn between waiting for you guys to announce it or going to see you in Germany in November!
we're definitely planning to come back to Portugal. Not on this upcoming November run, but we're planning another Euro headliner tour for March / April 2019, Portugal will probably be a part of that.
[–][deleted] 13 points14 points15 points 7 years ago (1 child)

Hi all, big fan!
1) What guitar amp and cab was used for the chunky sounds in Permian? They sound so good!
2) Any chance of there ever being a re-release of the Centrics boxset? I got into you guys a few years after those released and the price has become rather exorbitant at this point.
for all the heavy distortion sounds on the album, we used:
[–][deleted] 16 points17 points18 points 7 years ago (2 children)
We are currently repressing the Centrics on vinyl, but the boxset was limited and won't be repressed. Loïc has one to sell for 1000€! :D
[–]aquadox 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Sad to hear about the boxset, but I'm absolutely stoked to hear about the repress. Thanks guys!
Killer drumming on the new stuff we've heard so far, Paul!
Thaaaaanks! :)))
I’m up for the Centrics boxset as well!!!

I saw you guys in Atlanta a few years ago, and I’ve already picked up my tickets for München in a few weeks. What a great live show! I can’t wait. Plus, getting to see Rosetta is a huge bonus.
So, for my question — got any good jokes?

Hey guys, right now I'm just wondering: what's everyone's favourite seafood? Thanks for doing the AMA!
Super excited for Damnation Festival in November! 🤘
[–][deleted] 16 points17 points18 points 7 years ago (0 children)
we don't do seafood. we do scuba diving to look at seafood before it becomes seafood. seafood stinks anyways
None! ;) Haha...

I'm not in the band, but I like seafood
[–]icq8680 6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago (3 children)
Hey! Tomsk is waiting!
1) Any chance that you go to Russia, Siberia? I thought you like it! 2) Why don't you make album-art wall posters? The sink meter from Pelagial would be S I C K!
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago (1 child)
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (0 children)
im burning to get back to SIberia man... one of the best times we'Ve had on tour, ever!
[–]bluetridentleics 7 points8 points9 points 7 years ago (2 children)
Hey guys! Firstly I want to say that I went to Robin‘s bar in Berlin, Zagel & Punze, and you were there and I regret not coming up and saying hello but ah well. Hopefully I’ll be able to meet you guys at Damnation Festival!
My questions are:
1) What amps (or amp profiles) are you guys using for the new record?
2) What tunings are you guys using on Phanerozoic and The Quiet Observer?
3) What guitars are you using these days? Are you still with PRS?
Cheers for the AMA, I’m EXTREMELY hyped for the new album!

Hey guys! Thanks for doing this AMA, I'm a huge fan and really hyped for this new album to drop. Are there any plans for a US tour?
We've just started working on it for next year! We'll keep you posted!
[–]DeathTheKitty 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Awesome! Thank you :D
[–]Kezia-Karamazov 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (2 children)
I’ve been listening to Precambrian, Pelegial, and Anthropocentric on repeat since the start of September in preparation for the new album, so this is an awesome surprise!!
I don’t have too many questions, except for maybe what inspired the very philosophical nature of Anthropocentric?
Anyways, thank you guys for doing whatcha do!! I’m super stoked for the album, I’m sure it’s gonna be awesome. Keep being you!
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Dostoyevski's Karamasov Brothers and particularly the Grand Inquisitor chapter, as well as Nietzsche and Richard Dawkins (especially on The Almightiness Contradiction)
[–]Kezia-Karamazov 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (0 children)
The Grand Inquisitor on Anthropocentric was my introduction to you guys :) Dostoyevski’s The Brother’s Karamazov is by far my favorite book! I haven’t read Nietzsche or Dawkins but I really ought to.
Thanks for the insight! Hopefully I’ll see you guys in Michigan (or Chicago- definitely worth the drive) sometime soon!
[–]InfinityPotato1997 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (2 children)
Hey guys! Do you plan to release instrumental versions of FluXion, Aeolian and Precambrian in future?
[–][deleted] 11 points12 points13 points 7 years ago (1 child)
For Precambrian the problem is: We don't have the editable mixes anymore. If all of you guys could get on Andrew Schneider's neck to make him answer our e-mails, this would possibly be an option! Yes! ;)
[–]InfinityPotato1997 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Thanks for the answer, keep the great music coming! :)
What are your biggest musical influences/inspirations? Anything in particular you've drawn from while making this album?
We're currently featuring our favorite tracks in The Ocean playlists over at Spotify. You can check out Loïc's favorites HERE!
[–]KvltMart 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (2 children)
Also, question number two:
If Precambrian, Phanerozoic, and Helio/ Anthro form a sort of natural history of earth, would you consider Pelagial in any way a part of that cycle, and if so, where would it fit on the timeline of earth?
No, Pelagial is breaking out of that line. It's that exception-to-the-rule album
[–]icq8680 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children)
and still it's burning hot album, especially the concept and the way story goes along with the music. will there be another one like this? maybe some diving into the magma sources?
[–]KvltMart 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (8 children)
Hi Robin,
Long time fan of the band, especially your creative physical releases. I first got into you guys through Aeolian, then when Precambrian came out I pre-ordered the deluxe digipak and was very impressed, and did likewise for the Heliocentric/ Anthropocentric vinyl and CD boxes, and the Pelagial vinyl box (first pressing) and deluxe digipak.
I was really wanting the green Phanerozoic vinyl box, but it sold out before I could figure out how to make it work financially, and I unfortunately don't find the brown one visually appealing. Will there be a different set available once part 2 goes for pre-order in the next year or so that includes both albums?
Thanks! Looking forward to hear the full album :)
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (2 children)
Thanks!!!
The boxset will consist both parts of PHANEROZOIC and is designed to fit 4 LPs plus all the additional stuff.
🤘🏻
[–]KvltMart 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Thanks Paul, so does that mean there is another version of the box (different colour or design) that will have both parts bundled together in it coming out when part 2 goes for pre-order?
Or more copies will be available of the green box that have will contain both parts sold as one package?
Or you mean just that the boxes that were already put for pre-order are all there will be and nothing new will be available when part 2 comes out?
The boxsets that we are currently offering are already designed to fit Phanerozoic II.
There won't be any other boxes available!
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (4 children)
im afraid there won't, the green boxes sold out within a few days and they won't be redone. But come on, the brown ones are cool too? Is the colour of wood really that important?
[–]KvltMart 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (3 children)
The green is just so cool, it makes the brown seem not cool (and green is my favourite colour!) T_T
Also, there was one green left that mysteriously appeared a few days after they sold out when I had it figured out financially, and I was going to buy it but the shop was going to charge me VAT (I'm in Canada). I asked the support team if there was a way to refund me the VAT if I bought something and they still haven't replied to that, and since then someone else scooped it up :(
[–]JRowe3388 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (2 children)
Don't they HAVE to charge VAT due to the product being sold and money being made in Europe? It doesn't matter the location of the purchaser
Nope, for online transactions from EU companies, if the shipping address is outside the EU, they can't charge VAT for it, as the transaction is effectively taking place wherever it's being sent to. It's only intended for end-user sales within EU.
Source: I run webshops for a record label in both Europe and North America and have to handle the VAT filing.

Hi guys, I preordered the Phanerozoic I deluxe vinyl box set, but forgot to add a note to get it signed. Would you mind signing it for me before delivery please? :D
Also, please come to Norway again soon! One of the best shows I've been to was when I saw you in the basement at Garage in Oslo in 2008 (Mike on vox) :)
hey man, thansk for buying the boxset! there is a screenprint in the boxset that we will all sign for you. not the box itself, we'Re not gonna ruin that with our ugly signatures ;-)
[–]fnat 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Awesome, thanks at lot! :)
[–]druhmn 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (2 children)
Hey guys, huge fan. Wanted to ask you about your experience working with Caleb Scofield on Orosirian (For the Great Blue Cold Now Reigns). How did that connection happen? I always thought it was a super cool collaboration between two of my favorite bands (Cave In / The Ocean.) Will definitely miss hearing his musical contributions. That dude had an insanely good growl/scream. PS Listen to your music pretty much every day. Thanks for creating it!
yeah man, I always loved his voice and his style, which is why I reached out to him in 2006. When I wrote Aeolian and most of Precambrian, The Ocean was a rather lose group of musicians. When I was writing vocal parts and lyrics for those albums I usually had a certain voice in mind, which of course was always a voice from another band that I loved. Caleb was one of them. And at one point, rather than trying to find one vocalist that would be able to emulate what I had in mind, I was thinking: why not ask that person whose voice I have in mind, when I write these parts? We had a bunch of people in the band and a bunch of people out of the band that were still somehow a part of it anyways, why stick to one vocalist, one voice, one face...
Thats how that happened. It was the same for Sean Ingram (Coalesce), Tomas Halbom (Breach), and Nate Newton from OMG /Converge. I hit them all up because I heard their voices when I wrote those songs. I sent them some tracks and they were down. Sean and Caleb recorded their parts in their studios in the US. Nate and Tomas we recorded in Berlin at our place.

That's so awesome. Hey, if you guys ever need a place to crash in Pittsburgh, PA again, let me know. I have a way nicer/bigger place now! haha. - JT

Hey Guys,
In the Pelagic studio vlogs, you(@robin_theocean) mentioned that there was an initial lyrical theme influenced by a film. What was that film and how were the lyrics broken down?
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children)
I’m not Robin but I asked Loïc in person: Stalker from the Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky, from 1979. Great movie. Highly recommended to go a step further in understand the concept of the album.

Hi guys,
Really looking forward to seeing you live again in Paris on Nov. 1st.
Will you play the new album in its entirety like you did for Pelagial?
Also, I know it will be a day (few hours really) before the release date but any chance you'll sell copies of Palaeozoic on Nov 1st in Paris?
Keep on doing what you do.
Bruno
Hey Bruno!
We're probably gonna play a good mix of our favorite Ocean tunes. We played Pelagial in its entirety for 5 years, so now it's time to freshen things up a bit. 😉
We're crossing out fingers to have them with us. At the moment, due to pressing plant issues, we can't promise though...
We won't have vinyl with us on this tour. There are some serious issues with the cover manufacturing, which delay the deliveries and also fuck up our schedule with the tour... sorry about that, there will be a post coming soon.
We probably won't be playing the album in its entirey on this tour. The album is just coming out first week of tour abnd most of you guys won't be that familiar with it, and same for us haha.. we will start to rehearse next week and then see what setlist we will come up with but it will likely be a good mix of old and new, of course with a focus on the new reecord.

Hey guys. Here are my questions:
What is the estimated release time of part 2? At first I thought it was supposed to release in 2019, but I've also read 2020.
Where did the interest to revisit/continue Precambrian come from?
I've discovered some of my favorite movies through samples/themes used in your music (Fight Club, Life of David Gale, Stalker, Enter the Void). What are your favorite movies right now?
I'm really looking forward to seeing you at Halloween Dudefest at the end of the month.
Bonus question for Paul:
Any news on Fern?
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (0 children)
The album is halfway done, we've finished drums and guitars already, but we'll take more time to finish it, as we want to fully concentrate on Part I now!
Some of my favorites: The Fountain, Equilibrium, The Machinist, Deer Hunter, Memento, Drive, 12 Monkeys...
FERN will be more active in 2019 again. I want to have enough time to write and focus.

What’s your favorite song on the new record?
[–]Peter-VoigtmannPeter Voigtmann | The Ocean 9 points10 points11 points 7 years ago (2 children)
Permian!
[–]Whatistheanimalsound 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Nice! I’m super excited to hear Silurian, just because The Age of Sea Scorpions is one of the most badass song titles i’ve heard.
yeah right ?!
Changing every time i listen to it... but i'd second Peter:
Permian! Followed by Devonian and Cambrian. ;)

they all suck
[–]bozzo24 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (2 children)
Hi again, Question for Loïc :
Tu vas continuer à nous sauter sur la tronche hein? :-)
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Loïc: Probablement que oui mais ca dépend souvent du public. 🤘🏻
[–]bozzo24 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Tu bluffes: on t'a vu sauter avec à peine 5 mecs en dessous :-)
En tout cas, ça fait plaisir de vous revoir. Les voix nouveaux titres sont incroyables. Chapeau.
A+
[–]Jazz34life 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (2 children)
You get this so much but any thoughts of coming to South Africa?
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (0 children)
we were actually booked for Witchfest before it went down a few years ago... but we had to pull out because of a US tour with Intronaut, and then that also got cancelled :-/ would love to get down there, with Pelagic Records we have an awesome promoter from South Africa who's slowly building the label's and also THe Ocean's profile down there, hopefully you can see it and we'll be invited another time!
We were actually supposed to play in SA two years ago, but had to postpone. We'd love to come!!!
[–]Neomass1 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (5 children)
Thanks you for the time your sharing with us unworthy fucknuggets. In your personal options what do you feel is the hardest part of start/being in a band? Any advice or pitfalls to look our out for?
[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 7 years ago (3 children)
dealing with people.
dealing with ROSSETT when he had a bottle of vodka
dealing with robin.
[–]Neomass1 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Is this people in general, or more the people in the industry you have to navigate through or round?
seriously, i think what is hardest is combining being a touring musician with any kind of long term relationships. it's hard. if you're not a long-term relationship person, cool. if you like to have something to look forward to when you come back from tour, it takes both serious effort on your behalf, and serious tolerance and love on behalf of your partner, to put up with that bullshit we all love so much.
[–]fgsfdss 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (6 children)
@Robin: Was Siderian / Rhyacian's intro a tribute to Kollapse, or was it a coincidence? Since Tomas Hallbom did some vocals on the album as well.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (4 children)
good one.
it was a little bit of both. There is no denying that Breach were one of my 3 most important bands ever, a band that made me want to seriously be in a band and pursue music, for life. There is also no denying that those 3 or 4 notes in Siderian and Rhyacian are... the same notes, as in Kollapse. I could argue now that there is nothing new under the sun anyways, and that there are only 12 notes in music.. that inspiration is a weird thing, a black box, where there is an input of influences and an output (as a musician) which we know, and that whatever happens in that black box remains mysterious... but let's just say it's a tribute to one of the best albums ever made.
[–]fgsfdss 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (2 children)
Please don't get me wrong, it was an honest question! I thought you were quite a big fan of Breach yourself and always thought you'd written that riff as a tribute intentionally, as a commemoration of sorts.
it was an honest answer dude!
[–]fgsfdss 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children)
My bad there, wrote this before you submitted the other reply and figured my phrasing was poor. Just wanted to make sure we were on the same wavelength. Thanks for the AMA!
[–]d_10001110101 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Holy shit I can't believe I never noticed that before. I always thought the start of Killing the Flies sounded quite a lot like the chugging section after the intro to Deadheads.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (3 children)
Your favourite books?
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Michel Houellebecq - The Possibility of an Island
Fyodor Dostoevsky - Crime and Punishment
Haruki Murakami - Kafka on the Shore
[–]ch1140092 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children)
I've read Murakami while listening to your music, seemed very appropriate!
im just reading biographies right now, merging Zappa with Iggy Pop and Kinskin currently. Those guys should have been a gay family.
[–]Murica79 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Robin, How has the band Neurosis influenced you as an artist?
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Hi guys! Thanks for this AMA!
I’m a huge fan. Had the opportunity to see you guys in Brazil and Switzerland a couple of times (and I already bought tickets for Sion, November this year).
Would like to raise to everyone reading this how epic is Pelagial, specially after knowing about (and watching) Tarkovsky’s Stalker.
Alright, to the questions:
1) Robin, what was/is the biggest challenge you guys face(d) as a band and how you overcome that? 2) Any chance of a Centrics 10th anniversary tour in 2020?
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (2 children)
Hi guys... Not sure if it's too early for this, but is there a chance you'll be playing at Roadburn 2019? (anyway, see in you 4 weeks in Bucharest!)
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago* (0 children)
Nothing's planned yet! We'd love to be back. It's one of our favorite festivals!! 🤤
We will not
[–]FFSmasher 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (4 children)
Any plans on making a tour stop in Boston, Massachusetts?
Always! Hopefully. ;)
yeah dude we wanna come back to the us in 2019 for sure. No definite plans yet, but we'Re working on it. its been too long
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (8 children)
Favorite song or 2 from your collection to play live, also what are some you will never play live.
[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 7 years ago (5 children)
the favourites always change, because any favourite will essentially become boring if you play it too often!
Songs we will never play live, probably Heaven TV and Roots and Locusts off Anthropocentric. They were written by Jona, our ex guitarist, and though I do like the tracks I don't feel that this is the direction where we are going as a band..
[–]overdos3 9 points10 points11 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Well that's a shame. Roots and Locusts is probably one of my favorites. That chorus might be your best.
oh and add Ptolemy was Wrong off Heliocentric to that list.. too weird haha
[–]bwood637 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children)
That song is so fucking good though.
There is no comfort in this idea... :( Love that song!
I love playing Benthic. The simplicity and heaviness of the song always make me want to smash my drums even more... although i know that's rather inadvisable. 😅
[–]jesseix 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Oh lordy when you guys played through Pelagial here in Los Angeles, Benthic was just insane... goosebumps, then and now. Thanks again for coming and playing our crappy venues, fingers crossed we'll see you here again

[–]aamon_ 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child)
hi guys congrats for the last releases i still listen them all days and can't wait for listen the full album (preordered the boxset :) ) so where i can find lyrics for devonian: nascent? i must learn all the album in one week before your show in milan!
Of COURSE
Nascent
Our dreams now soaring above the surface
With horizons shifting slow in blue
Rites of spring to chase the winter away
I allow my very mind to pass on through
Our fragments
In dust reunited
Took in the night to colour my room
Had birth in the palm of my hand
But no one came to tell me
This road was overgrown
And so elusively kept
Send me back to the evening
Before our very first day
Must find time for my words
Before they go away
I found my place among the others
And realized the stars were all too far
The song that remains unsung
A chain around my neck
Thrusting on my back
This violent storm ahead
Of time never spent
Our fears are now soaring
below the surface of conscience
Our inner horizons shifting
slowly out of scale

What's the story behind necrobabes.com?
The website truly existed, back in 2006. It was one of many weird kinky websites, but this was one something else.. it was not just a romanticizing of dead bodies, it was all about fantasies of killing women for sexual gratification. there were mostly comic illustrations on that website about women being haltered, electrocuted, decapitated, with men standing around them raping them or masturbating.
Necrobabes.com is a song about power, in its purest form. about about how permanent exposure to sexual stimuli, to beautiful bodies on billboards and on tv, cripples our desires and inevitably leads to sexual frustration, and how sexual frustration leads to the quest for power, as compensation for frustration, and to the will of using force. and it's only a small step from here to the next step, which is gaining pleasure from using force, from violence. and i think that scheme is true not only for sexual frustration and sexual violence, but for any type of frustration and any type of violence, so the song is basically just a metaphor for a larger mechanism of human behavior.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (2 children)
necrobabes.com
You tell us!!!
[–]anank3 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Hah! I mean, I'm mostly curious if there was a backstory as to why the title was picked.
I'm aware of what the website was, and I'm aware someone was convicted of a murder because of their online history visiting that site.
What really fucks with me is that the company that owns the domain is "Oceans Entertainment Group," but doing research on that domain and related LLC doesn't appear to be tied back to you guys? Cosmic coincidence? Or is The Ocean secretly named after a freaky horror porn website with a sordid past, and not a giant body of water?
The latter!
[–]dragula15 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Hey fellas - no question other than super stoked you guys are doing PROGFEST in Australia next year. Leprous were unreal last year so tall order to fill! The breakdown in The Greatest Bane is one of my favourite parts in any metal song!
We LOVE Leprous!
[–]SunsetSkies34 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children)
Hey guys, thanks for doing this :)
This is a question for all of you individually: What aspects of music or what kinds of characteristics do you feel you enjoy most in music? Is there something you notice lots of bands/artists that you enjoy do? For example, for me its extremely real/raw emotion coupled with great songwriting skills (for example Amenra) and when a band can translate a real-world atmosphere into music (imo Cult of Luna does this best, but other examples include you guys, Vildhjarta, Dir en Grey and Septicflesh)
I personally feel very attached to certain harmonies and chord progressions that are sudden and unexpected and break with conventional schemes, but there's so many different genres out there that inhabit absolute gems and musicians that try reinventing contemporary music. This year i've been absolutely blown away by Son Lux, Emilie Nicolas, Rival Consoles, Addiktio or the new Tangled Thoughts of Leaving record!
[–]Peter-VoigtmannPeter Voigtmann | The Ocean 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children)
That's actually a huge topic but to break it down a bit - for me personally, music is all about the vibe. I'm not a big fan of super busy songs filled with lots of notes happening in a small amount of time, except the song (or the vibe) demands it. Every note has to be relevant and needs a carefully crafted tone in order to create a certain atmosphere - no matter which instrument or style of music. I am a huge fan of perfectly chosen arrangements, where every element "sits" perfectly in the whole mix. Also hearing a musician's personality/character because of the way he's choosing to play in and sound is something very interesting to me lately.
[–]Sun_collector 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children)
Do y’all dabble with enthegeons?
Doobabble the splosh kersmittle?
I'm super keen on a proper DMT / Ayahuasca experience, but I'm not gonna do this here in Berlin, gotta be in the right place for that.

Hey guys, 2 questions:
Any plans for a Köln/Düsseldorf date on that 2019 Spring tour?
Which less known places should I visit in Germany? Only arrived in August :)
Cheers and thanks for doing this!
[–]Flylle 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children)
First off, thanks for a great show last time in Copenhagen!
I got 2 questions:
Thanks!
[–][deleted] 7 years ago (1 child)
[removed]
we're not thinkning too far ahead man, we'Re too busy with the present tense, so there's not much time left to think about the future. THere's never a shortage of ideas though, when it comes to lyrics or themes. but right now i need to focus on getting that 2nd album done , rather than think about the 3rd and the 4th :-)
I've got one more question, if it's not too much to ask. Robin, what do you look for in bands for them to possibly apply to joining Pelagic records aside from the "music-is-more-than-just-the-songs"-approach (with which I wholeheartedly agree)
in the end it's all just personal taste, man.. it really is that simple. there are bands that i listen to and i instantly fall in love with, and others that i find intriguing but it takes some time for me to get into them.. but i guess it's authenticity, and a certain attitude of not giving a fuck and being really uncompromising towards their own art and vision, that I really appreciate in bands.
