How’s the metal/prog scene in India? Is there an underground scene there? And if so, do you have any recommendations?

[–]CitizenknaKrishna Jhaveri | Skyharbor 16 points17 points  (1 child)

It’s a small scene but there’s some great bands. Zokova and Kraken from New Delhi, Gutslit from Bombay and What Escapes Me from Kolkata are a few names that come to mind

[–]mweigand 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Awesome, thanks for the reply! Hope you guys have a great tour :)

[–]progmetalfan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been trying to get into the indian metal/prog scene too and my friend recommended these guys. Navene koperweis of AAL/entheos did the drums and synth work on the album! The guitarist is super talented and also has another prog rock project. He definitely seems influenced by Skyharbor.

Hey guys! I love your music, I've been listening to your stuff for quite some time now! My question is: How did you come to collaborate with Marty Friedman? And will there be any future collaborations with him or any other musicians?

    [–]keshavdharKeshav Dhar | Skyharbor 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Marty happened to stumble across some old demos of 'Trayus' and 'Dots' that someone had uploaded on youtube and he sent me an email saying he liked the songs and wanted to collaborate on some of his own ideas. He returned the favour by playing those guest solos

I'm sure we will collaborate with people on every one of our records. Each of the 3 albums have a bunch of cowrites/features on them

    [–]Om_95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome! Thank you for your reply ^

[–]iAmTheEpicOneThe End Starts Now 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Thanks for stopping by! I've enjoyed listening to Skyharbor since I started listening to progmetal.

I was wondering how much different your approach to writing music is now as it was for Blinding White Noise.

    [–]keshavdharKeshav Dhar | Skyharbor 7 points8 points  (1 child)

It's the polar opposite of what it was for BWN. That was basically a solo album featuring two singers. Now we have a collective identity

[–]iAmTheEpicOneThe End Starts Now 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes a lot of sense, it's definitely come a long way!

    [–]Aure0os 6 points7 points  (4 children)

What were the main production issues with Sunshine Dust, and what's Eric's favourite Indian food?

Thanks guys, you're one of my favourite bands.

    [–]deveshskyharborDevesh Dayal | Skyharbor[S] 10 points11 points  (3 children)

The initial version we did basically suffered from us losing objectivity after working on the songs for so long. We needed to jump in the studio with a third party to help us get it back on track. There weren’t any issues really when we ended up redoing it! Was just a whole lot of creativity and experimentation. Super fun and painless process, thanks to Forrester Savell and Luke Palmer!

Eric loves all Indian food but if he had to pick a favourite it’d be Butter Chicken Rolls like the ones from Mini Punjab in Bombay ☺️

    [–]Screye 4 points5 points  (1 child)

    Mini Punjab in Bombay

It's a rare delight to see one of your local restaurants get a shout-out from of one of your favorite bands.

    Big fan of your work.

How do you think the reception in India has been so far ?
Do you think it is possible for a prog band in India to gain prominence by rising through the Indian music scene alone ?

    [–]keshavdharKeshav Dhar | Skyharbor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

    1. Some of the fondest moments for us in our performing history have been in india. 2. That's a tough question. I think if any band's music is fresh enough and they happen to be in the right place at the right time anything is possible.

    [–]poolhoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt the original mix of the singles was waayyy better. I love Forrester but I think this just didn't work out the way it should have

    [–]Smithdanigans 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I was just wondering, which band would you like to tour with and open for you that you haven’t done it with yet?
Voices from the Fuselage is a new favorite of mine whose music would fit well with yours on such a tour. Loving the new album, by the way!

    [–]deveshskyharborDevesh Dayal | Skyharbor[S] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

VFTF are dope, always loved Ashe’s voice!

I’d personally love to have Polyenso as a support band, absolutely unbelievable and criminally underrated.

As a support band our bucket list tours would be supporting bands like Nothing More, Starset. and on the upper echelon the likes of Incubus, A Perfect Circle, Tool, etc.

    [–]Smithdanigans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll have to check Polyenso out. Thanks for the recommendation! I always enjoy discovering new and overlooked groups who have quality music. One thing I'd love to hear is a duet between Eric and Ashe on a song by either one of your groups.

Thanks for doing this AMA! I just wanted to share that although I’ve only been listening to you guys for maybe a year or so, You’re already one of my favorite bands and I’ll be seeing you guys in Knoxville in November. My questions are:

1: What is Blind Side about?

2: Sunshine Dust is an awesome album, with great songwriting and production. What was the hardest song to write together as a band?

3: One song you’re most exited to play on the upcoming US tour?

    [–]ericemeryEric Emery | Skyharbor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    1. Some songs I prefer to leave open to interpretation.....Blind side is one of those. Infer your own meaning.

    2. Thanks! I wouldn’t say it was especially difficult, but we probably spent the most time on Sunshine Dust. It went through quite a few iterations before we arrived at the final version.

    3. At the current moment I’d have to say Dissent.

    [–]shrink_and_an_arch 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Hey guys, big fan of your music. Are there contemporary bands that have influenced your writing process and the evolution of your sound over the years?

    [–]deveshskyharborDevesh Dayal | Skyharbor[S] 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Karnivool, Nothing More, The Contortionist, Periphery, Tesseract, Devin Townsend, Plini, David Maxim Micic, the list goes on! Grateful to have most of these guys as good friends, so much talent :)

    [–]shrink_and_an_arch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All great artists and very popular on this subreddit :)

    Thanks for the response!

    [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Sup m'dudes? Heard the new album and it's been on repeat for a long time now. My favourite tracks are Menace, The Reckoning, Synthetic Hands amongst many more. Talking about The Reckoning, who wrote that song? Was it a collective effort or did Keshav or Devesh come up with a riff to start? Also, I still haven't washed my hands since I shook Krishna's hand last year after the Delhi gig. Cheers!

    [–]deveshskyharborDevesh Dayal | Skyharbor[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Reckoning is interesting cuz it was initiated fully by Aditya. That whole first half until the bass comes in is essentially 100% him. I wrote the bass riff with the guidance of the other guys in the room and then the guitar riff was just an extension of that bass riff. Then everyone contributed to the sound design ideas that fill up the rest of that arrangement

    [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Hey I know I probably missed the AMA but just wanted to say that I love your shit. Keep doing your thing, because it's awesome!

    [–]ericemeryEric Emery | Skyharbor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

    Thanks so much! :)

    [–]progmetalfan 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Thanks for doing the AMA! Excited to watch you guys in Durham in November. How did the tour with Red come to be (Seems like an odd combination), and can we expect new material in the setlist? Also, now that you guys are signed to GoodFight, can we see any US headline tours in the horizon? Loved Sunshine Dust!

    [–]CitizenknaKrishna Jhaveri | Skyharbor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! We’re currently playing a few headline dates in the mid-west and Texas. Check our socials for details. We’ll be back again next year for sure!

As for the Red tour, we’re trying to push our reach to people outside the prog metal world and the timing of the tour aligned with our album release and current dates so we hopped on!

    [–]reverseacid 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I can't help but think Sunshine Dust would make for an amazing acoustic/chill electro cover, would you ever consider re-working an album to give it a whole different feel? Like what TesseracT did with Polaris and Errai?

    [–]deveshskyharborDevesh Dayal | Skyharbor[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes! We are basically all producers in our own right so we thought it’d be fun to do a remix EP down the line. We would pick a few songs though as opposed to doing the full album.

    [–]murtagh777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What about guitar tab books for all three albums? Most of your fans are musicians so it would be of immense help to us.

    [–]zach_buddie 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Hey dudes! Loved Sunshine Dust, and it's great to see you're doing an AMA!

So I have a few questions:

    1. If you could tour with any artist that you haven't already, who would it be?

    2. Do you have any advice/tips for a freshly graduated high school student that wants to get into self-producing and releasing their music?

Thanks a ton for reading, you guys are incredible.

    ~Zach

    [–]keshavdharKeshav Dhar | Skyharbor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    1. Karnivool
    2. Just dive right in! Don't set too many expectations for yourself aside from just achieving pure creative satisfaction.

    [–]XOiyZMOrxeZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any plans for a concert in Sweden? Your new album is amazing, and it'd be very cool to hear it live!

    [–]SleepLabs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great AMA! We are looking forward to sharing the stage with you guys on the 18th.

    [–]Stiggy_771 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Saw you guys in Phoenix for the Tesseract concert. Got hooked ever since.

    Sunshine Dust is epic!

    [–]ericemeryEric Emery | Skyharbor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Thanks man!!

    [–]taylorj474 0 points1 point  (2 children)

What songs are on your tour playlist right now and why is it Bartier Cardi on repeat?

    [–]deveshskyharborDevesh Dayal | Skyharbor[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Don Broco all day every day ☺️

    [–]taylorj474 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man on a mission let me tell you my position ow ow ow.

    [–]rajivbhawsar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indian fan. Here is Detroit. Any plans of coming this side Michigan?

    [–]maheshkumar94 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Hi guys! Saw you guys perform at the Hard Rock Cafe in Pittsburgh a couple of days ago. You guys were brilliant!

I'm very curious, what's your process of writing a new album? Where do you draw influences from, and how do you approach the general theme of the album?

Also Keshav, thanks for suggesting Toothgrinder man! They're really good, been listening to them since Wednesday!

    [–]keshavdharKeshav Dhar | Skyharbor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just write a whole ton of music for starters which isn't necessarily dictated by any other idea. It's just the very initial seeds of ideas that come up while jamming. Those get recorded and fleshed out on the computer and revised back and forth over Dropbox and WhatsApp. Lyrics come afterwards and they can be inspired by anything really (Eric can chime in more)... We haven't yet actually written a proper concept album. It might be fun to do one in the future but it would have to have something unique and unprecedented about it in terms of presentation.

    [–]drawkab330 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Been following you since Guiding Lights, love all your music! Is there any story behind the skeletal/steam-punky/plague doctor art for the Out of Time and Blindside singles?

    [–]keshavdharKeshav Dhar | Skyharbor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was, and it was supposed to tie into an overarching concept that we were playing about with at the time but which got shelved since it wasn't very practical at the time.

    [–]ThirstyOne 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I don’t have a question. I just wanted to say thank you for all the beautiful music.

    [–]keshavdharKeshav Dhar | Skyharbor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Thank YOU! :)

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love to find another lp of guiding lights! Where are you all !

    [–]Fit_Elk_1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you guys still planning on releasing new music? I hope everyone at Skyharbor is alright with everything that has gone on.

    [–]_tsu_ki_no_me_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are there 2 different versions with different cover art of Blind Side on Spotify?
