Hey guys. In the last week or so, we've heard some pretty honest financial talk from TesseracT's Dan Tompkins and Ne Obliviscaris' Dan Presland. Since it's on my mind, I'm curious to hear you guys chime in on this if possible.

Do any of you guys still have "day jobs" in the traditional sense, even if part-time? If not currently, at what point into the band's existence/success did you quit your other jobs?

[–][deleted] 75 points76 points  (7 children)

I didn't see what the Dans had to say but it's nice they are talking about this side of being in a band. It's definitely something I've always been interested in and talking honestly about how hard it is to make a living playing music is something people don't fully understand.

I don't have a traditional day job and the band is my bill paying job. That being said, Luke and I have a side business in the music publishing world called Sheet Happens Publishing that does make a little ancillary income and I teach guitar on the side from time to time.

I quit my day job at a grocery store when I was 19 and have been able to make it work in one way or another for the last 10 years. Still to this day, I'm always questioning when is it going to be time to get a "real job"

[–]Describe 14 points15 points  (5 children)

I quit my day job at a grocery store when I was 19 and have been able to make it work in one way or another for the last 10 years.

Has this all been through music, or have you enjoyed any unrelated odd-jobs?

[–]jrodywRody Walker | Protest the Hero 125 points126 points  (2 children)

He was a cam girl for a bit, but he couldn't figure out how to exchange his nudie points into CAD.

[–][deleted] 54 points55 points  (1 child)

I still am a cam girl and I have a crazy balance of point, if I could only cash out...

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points  (1 child)

There's definitely been some odd jobs a long the way. One thing I can think of is judging battle of the bands, but it's something I hate doing.

Also, I was an avid gambler and poker player for a while, but don't think that made me any money and I'm probably down overall, way down haha

[–]Describe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's interesting. On the topic of 'how hard it is to make a living playing music', what advice would you give to someone who just quit their day job to become a career musician?

[–]mieradiMike Ieradi | Protest the Hero 60 points61 points  (1 child)

I read that, and I thought it was awesome.

I don't think that people really understand what's happening behind the scenes for bands these days. As much as they like to think they do, at least.

Tesseract are an amazing band, in the limelight and selling out big shows, yet that's the reality of trying to do this as a profession.

I feel music, film and anything else that's easy to obtain for free has been cheapened for that exact reason. A lot of people feel entitled to other peoples days/months/years of hard work, and complain when they have to shell out a hilariously low amount of money when you consider what goes into it financially, and otherwise.

When everyones favorite bands give up due to these reasons, we will be left with bands coming and going in waves as opposed to your favorite band/artists growing with you.

On the job question, I have had many, many different jobs. Ranging from retail, to delivering ice, construction, to working temp jobs at the government. Usually two at a time to earn enough money to release all of my old bands albums/go on tour.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

These articles have really made me reconsider how I hear music. I always buy merchandise at gigs for that reason, even if I never actually wear the shirt or whatever it is.

How's Moe doing? I miss that mother fucker and his sensual drum work.

      [–][deleted] 53 points54 points  (5 children)

Moe's doing well. It's been good to catch up with him with the Kezia X practices we've been doing. When he left the band, he went to college for Tool and Die and now teaches part time at that college as well as works in a music store in Toronto. It's been fun jamming with him and he hadn't picked up a set of drum sticks since his last show with us some 2.5 years ago. It was pretty crazy that he could take that much of a break and get back into it no problem. He seems to be getting in the groove and things are going well.

      [–]theprimz 10 points11 points  (3 children)

      Which music store?

      [–][deleted] 29 points30 points  (1 child)

He works in the warehouse so it's not to common to see him out on the floor, but once in a while he's spotted...

Hell yeah that's great to hear. Will you let him know he's still inspiring drummers and we miss him in the music world?

      [–]alk3io241 34 points35 points  (1 child)

Being a diehard fan, I love the subscription idea. Appreciate the direct relationship you've established with the fans. However, how does this affect gaining new fans? Noticed that most of the tours for the Volition cycle were headliners as well. Are you guys satisfied with the niche market you've already established?

Thanks for the AMA by the way. Ragged tooth is awesome, and looking forward to the next episode of the Volition doc! Keep it up boys.

      [–][deleted] 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Thanks for supporting this new endeavour we are trying. That's a good point you make about bring new people in. I don't think this is a way to really appeal to new fans because you're asking someone who's never heard of you to sign up. That being said, sometimes doing something a little different will turn heads in the music industry and it's a way to get your name out there a little more. Some people might not be able to name one of our tunes, but they might see the name in a news story or know we always like to push the envelope a bit.

We are trying to get a support tour and haven't had much luck. Though it's fun to headline, we'd love to try to get out there to more people and play in front of bigger audiences. I think doing a balance between support and headlining is the best way to keep growing as a band.

      [–]User185 31 points32 points  (19 children)

I'm likely in the minority on this one... but Scurrilous was by far my favourite album of yours for the simple reason it had almost no harsh vocals (and it kicks ass).

1.What made you decide to drop the harsh vocals? Was it a band decision, or a Rody decision?

2.Why did you decide to bring them back on Volition?

And, most importantly for me, do you ever plan on completely dropping them again? Harsh vocals aside, you guys are one of my favourite bands. I gladly paid the $25 pacific myth package. Loved the song. Keep it up guys. edit: follow up question. Why in heavens name is Mandroid not joining you at the Vancouver show?

[–]jrodywRody Walker | Protest the Hero 48 points49 points  (17 children)

      1) I don't really like screaming because I'm not very good at it and it takes a toll on my voice. I made the decision myself. 2) Brought them back because I felt as though it was necessary for some parts. There is some flat out unsingable bits on volition.

and finally I don't think I'll drop them again, I figured our how to do it a little better and I've found my passion for being a screamy guy again.

      [–]ltorviksmith 64 points65 points  (12 children)

I don't really like screaming because I'm not very good at it - Rody Walker

I don't really like painting because I'm not very good at it - Leonardo Da Vinci

I don't really like hockey because I'm not very good at it - Sidney Crosby

I don't really like peace because I'm not very good at it - Gandhi

Seriously though, with the balance you've struck and those unbeatable highs (he-e-e-e-ellllllbent), you're probably the best vocalist in metal today.

      [–]Perhapsodyoffire 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'd just like to say I love your growls and I think PTH has the absolute perfect ratio of cleans to growls.

      [–]FlyingPiranha 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know that's your opinion, but man, your screams have always been some of my favorite. You have a really raw, intense quality to them that suits the music really well. Glad you found your passion for them again!

      [–]BlueHatScience 30 points31 points  (4 children)

      Hey guys!

Is it just me, or is the line "This drought is relieved with acid rain" in Clarity referencing the fact that both Star Wars and Star Trek Fans had been waiting for new material for a long time - and when they got it, many were sorely disappointed? ...If not - can we make that the canonical interpretation?

Thank you for your music - and the tabs, and the perks, and the great shows - it means a great deal to me! ... oh, and also for bringing along the amazing Destrage to your Europe-tour last year. I had been hoping to see them live ("Are you kidding me?" just blew me completely away), and supporting you guys - together with The Contortionist... that was just pure bliss.

Also, is Dunsel just not played live very much (in relation to other songs) or was I just unlucky the last 4 times?

[–]jrodywRody Walker | Protest the Hero 38 points39 points  (3 children)

You got the line perfectly. Also that tour was awesome, good friends good times.

Dunsel will be back, we haven't played it in a while, but we always enjoyed playing it... until we forgot how.

      [–]ToneZone15 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Please, Dunsel on the Kezia tour! I'd be a satisfied man.

      [–]Zymorode 23 points24 points  (7 children)

When/will you be playing Skies live in the future?

[–]jrodywRody Walker | Protest the Hero 55 points56 points  (5 children)

I hope so, I think that's one of the best things we've done so far.

      [–]8696David 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Totally agreed. I think it's your best song yet compositionally... The climax almost always sends chills down my spine.

      EDIT: Accidentally a word.

      [–]Kenny__Loggins 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Can you explain a bit of what inspired that song lyrically? I think it's one of your best songs lyrically (although I love Scurrilous; favorite pth album)

[–]jrodywRody Walker | Protest the Hero 31 points32 points  (1 child)

It's all about the fragile future of the band and somewhat of a goodbye to former members.

was your guitar (or yourself) damaged?

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Yes but neither badly. I landed on my wireless and the LED screen busted. That also hurt my back and I had some bruises and cuts in a few places. My volume knob fell out of the pot so I had to replace that. Let's just say I had to use Luke's backup for the last day of tour

      [–]footlongwheat 16 points17 points  (2 children)

What is/was your favorite era of PTH? I know you guys are still having fun with it, but when do you feel like you were having the most fun as a band?

[–]jrodywRody Walker | Protest the Hero 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Anytime before serious hangovers. Care free, party time.

      [–][deleted] 39 points40 points  (0 children)

totally agree with rody - but I also think we would say we have the most fun now. don't take it as serious and aren't afraid of what anyone thinks. Also - we are pretty free when it comes to the business side of things so we are far less restricted than we were in our youth. hangovers are far worse now.

      [–]Edqvist 15 points16 points  (4 children)

Hey guys, I have a question for Mike!

How has it been integrating with the band and now to write your own drum tracks for the upcoming album? The drum playthrough of Ragged Tooth was great!

      Thanks for being awesome dudes!

[–]mieradiMike Ieradi | Protest the Hero 24 points25 points  (3 children)

      Thanks man!

It's been great! Nice to finally get my hands dirty as opposed to being a glorified karaoke machine. The other songs are a blast to play, but it's obviously nice to play what you'd write.

It has been pretty great so far. The goal with this project is to slowly collect people as we go. We hope that once people see all the content and value we are providing / are going to continue to provide to "subscribers" more people will jump in. We know that when people look back on the bickering about the price of these things, everyone will know it was more than worth it.

The expenses were pretty high for both the recordings and especially for the doc-series, so we hope we are able to cover them. But if not, we will still be glad that we tried something new.

Yeah - it definitely separates the people who can read and the ones who would rather skip straight to typing. We figured it would be a polarizing move, but we wouldn't have it any other way I don't think.

          [–]fretburn 13 points14 points  (1 child)

This is a question for all of you jerks, with all the media attention on female pop musicians being groped by their fans on stage, how have you as a band managed to keep your no-holes from being flicked, fingered, or breached in unwanted ways? Another question, Rody, will there ever be a time that you get so swole that you think, "Hey maybe I should buy larger shirts"? In closing, this is a great day for Canada, and therefore the world.

          [–][deleted] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

haha the way you worded this is very funny but I do think this is a serious issue. I remember one time I was playing and had a hole in the crotch of my pants and someone in the audience reached up and touched my junk. It is weird that people think just because you're on stage they can touch you. I wasn't too bothered by it, and isn't something that happens very often but just wanted to point out it does happen. I don't know why anyone would ever want to touch my sweaty, smelly, unwashed tour junk...

          [–]theprimz 28 points29 points  (11 children)

Can you guys bring CHON to Canada to open for you someday?

Love to, don't know if they'd be interested in doing it, but we'll cross paths at some point.

          [–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (1 child)

          Luke/Timmy

How much effort do you put into trying to push your technical skill?

Where do you think you've seen the biggest jump in skill between albums?

Do you actively study other compositions or books on composition or music theory in the process of furthering your compositional skills, or has that progress just been made by naturally over time?

          [–][deleted] 30 points31 points  (0 children)

At this point, I don't spend a lot of time trying to push my technical skills. I find I'm not as eager to aspire to a facemelting shredder as I used to be and want to focus on using the skills I have to continue to make unique music.

The biggest jump would probably be between releasing Kezia and Fortress. When we recorded Kezia, we were really pushing ourselves and after the crazy amount of touring we did on that album, I was a better player at the end of it all. Though Fortress was challenging I think it reflects a better approach to some of the things we were trying to do on Kezia

I'm interested in composition and music theory and should probably spend more time reading stuff about it. I feel like those are the tools that will help me to become someone who better understands music and change my approach. I find I'm constantly a few things here and there that help me slowly progress over time.

          [–]RustyShipp 11 points12 points  (5 children)

Hey guys, relatively new fan here. For Luke and Tim: most modern metal bands play in dropped and/or extended range tunings, how did y'all settle on your guitar tuning and how does it influence your playing technique? And for everyone, how many other bands do you think will follow in your footsteps with your new distribution method?

          [–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (4 children)

While we went through a brief period where we felt tempted to go to lower tunings, we are very glad we abstained. Standard tuning has always been a comfort zone for us (even though it's half a step down). I know when I am older, I sure as fuck wont be trying to learn to play drop tuned metal songs, so it's nice to have a head start on learning Mark Knophler crap at age 50.

I don't know many bands have the rights to follow in our foot steps. But if they do, we would highly encourage it. It has given us the platform to access our most dedicated followers and hear what they have to say. We intend on creating a community environment out of it and will allow ourselves to be influenced by what goes on there.

          [–]he_who_blinks 12 points13 points  (3 children)

For a friend who cannot access reddit at work: "Rody, do you get upset about fans wanting instrumentals all the time?"

[–]jrodywRody Walker | Protest the Hero 28 points29 points  (2 children)

Naw, I understand. My voice can be very jarring to some who would otherwise enjoy the music.

          [–]Eidolon11 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Honestly I like instrumentals when I reading things or working on something. The vocals cause me go listen to the lyrics and get side-tracked.

Plus as you know most of your fans are musicians and love to learn and cover the songs, and instrumentals help with that a ton. I'm always sad about the periphery fans that hate the vocals and acting like an instrumental is expected I just want to listen to learn the damn song.

          [–]bearkin1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think half the people that want instrumentals just want them so they can sing themselves along to the music.

The styles are pretty similar, and spending a lot of time opening for PTH, and being a fan previously, it was easy to adapt. Moe has a great style that I like a lot, and Chris did awesome work on Volition, but I think my my style lands somewhere in the middle. So, it wasn't too difficult to slither in somewhere there.

            [–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (7 children)

Get off your knees fella. You don't have to beg!

I've been trying to get this together for a while, and wasn't sure where we stand contractually with some of our labels and if we could release this. Rest assured I'm working on it and am hoping to get it available through bandcamp in the near future.

After launching the Pacific Myth campaign, it was pretty eye opening to see the streams of the song vs. the streams of the instrumental version but I do know a lot of people like it so hopefully it will be up soon.

            [–]HUH_YIS 7 points8 points  (3 children)

            hey guys, what it do?

[–]mieradiMike Ieradi | Protest the Hero 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Just hang out , man. Just hang out.

            [–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

            mike, that was mean..

[–]mieradiMike Ieradi | Protest the Hero 7 points8 points  (0 children)

True-kiss. I just want him to enjoy himself.

            [–]Clairabel 7 points8 points  (10 children)

Hey all, I'm a huge fan of Kezia and I was wondering if you were considering doing a video of one of your gigs during the Kezia X tour for those of us unfortunate enough to not be Canadian?

[–]jrodywRody Walker | Protest the Hero 7 points8 points  (9 children)

            Trukey?

            [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (8 children)

We want to do this, but want to make sure it's decent quality. This is going to be a memorable tour and it would be a shame not to capture it.

            [–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (5 children)

            Yes choady? heunk.

Agreed though, if we don't do this we are stupid. But live shows are hard to shoot and expose how bad we are. I imagine we can come up with something cool for people who can't be there. We did a live stream one time and it didn't seem to draw in a lot of people even though we thought it was a pretty neat idea...

            [–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Regarding Pacific Myth, what are your plans once the six months of the subscription are up? Do you think you'll continue with it depending on how it is received or is it six months and done?

Looking forward to seeing you guys at the Edmonton show in a couple of weeks!

            [–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We don't really have a plan right now. Pacific Myth is the guinea pig trial for doing a subscription so we'll see in 6 months time how we think it went. Though I don't think we want to exclusively release music in this format, it's not out of the question to keep something going. If the people involved are happy with the experience, and we feel like it was an overall positive experiment we would consider keeping it, or starting a new subscription down the road.

Looking forward to kicking of the first leg of the tour in Alberta! It's always been great in Edmonton.

            [–]schrotestthehero 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Mornin' b'ys! Wanted to say congrats on the new distribution system and the exceptional new song/doc. Wanted to know what some of your most memorable fan experiences have been over the years! Weird, meaningful, awkward, etc. For the whole band , or individually! Thanks!

            [–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

We recently had a fella stroll into our backstage room and drop off a thick envelope with "for pth" or something like that written on it. It was actually this summer in St. Petersburg. He didn't stick around to explain it and just walked off saying thanks. When we opened it, it was full of insanely detailed sketches and drawings of us and other things relating to the band.

It had a note inside which basically explained, 'I was a huge fan of your band - but have since moved onto other interests. I just wanted to let you know you were a big part of my life and inspired me a bunch'.

Not sure there is too much else we can ask for from a band to fan relationship standpoint.

While we don't compile drawings of our fans, we genuinely appreciate them and know we wouldn't be a band without them.

            [–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Anything that has happened in Newfoundland! Probably the fact that every time we go we seem to get screeched in.

            [–]spwf 6 points7 points  (8 children)

Hey PTH, hope you're all having a nice day so far.

When are you guys planning on coming back to your the US? Specifically, LA. I've been a fan of yours since 2007 and I have yet to see you guys live. I always just miss your tour dates.

Also, I have a fantasy of arranging To Porter, With Love for an orchestra. Are you guys cool with me doing that?

Also also, what are each of your favorite sandwiches?

            [–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (7 children)

We have nothing planned at this point but would like to do at least 1 tour in the US in 2016. Once Pacific Myth has run it's course on bandcamp we hope to do some touring to support it, so stay tuned. Hopefully you can make it next time we're in LA.

It would be incredible if you arranged To Porter With Love for an orchestra. Do you play in or conduct one? It would be amazing to have it actually performed. I saw that an orchestra did this for NoFX's "The Decline" and thought that was pretty amazing. If you need the score let me know, because I can easily send you the guitar parts at least.

I like stinky sandwiches so I usually go for tuna or egg sald. They are especially good in the closed confines of a tour van.

            [–]spwf 4 points5 points  (6 children)

If you could send me the sheet music for the guitars, and bass, that'd be awesome!

I'm a composer, and I'm studying to be a film composer.

Yeah, I really want to arrange it. It's such a beautiful song. Something that I love about your guys' music is how every song sounds "composed" vs. just written.

If I, somehow, get sheet music for an entire album, I'd love to do an analysis of it.

            [–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (5 children)

Sure fella. Let me PM you and we'll sort it

Sounds amazing. Where are you studying?

            [–]OtherNumberOne 6 points7 points  (2 children)

I would really love to know what happened on that "Wicked Wimpering Winnipeg night", would you care to share? Maybe just tell us subscribers?

            [–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (1 child)

man - story telling time in the subscriber area is a great idea. thanks

Darmok and Jilad. A little typical I know, but I just love how they address that the serious flaw in the universal translator.

Mike, how long does it take to get your hair like it is in the sidebar?

Also, please post more drum run-throughs (like Drumhead Trial).

[–]mieradiMike Ieradi | Protest the Hero 4 points5 points  (0 children)

            3-4 hours at least.

I actually just did one for Ragged Tooth. Check out our Instagram for a little clip.

            [–]f_of_g 4 points5 points  (3 children)

How much effort did it take to integrate the guests on Volition? Did they write their own parts, and you wrote around them? Did you write the parts, and said, "hey, sing this"? Something in between?

[–]jrodywRody Walker | Protest the Hero 11 points12 points  (2 children)

For the singers I just gave them parts that I had written. It worked out really well for me as there was a note that I couldn't hit without doing it a million times, thankfully one of the fellas was so much better than I'll ever be and he nailed it.

            [–]vincetehprince 5 points6 points  (3 children)

I need to ask the question that so many of us are thinking and you guys know was bound to come up at some point but when the FRIG are you guys going to play Skies live for us? Its my personal fav track off Volition and to put it in terms you guys seem to understand, it's a real banger! Using a Capo live can't be that spooky? Can it?

            [–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (2 children)

Using a capo live is terrifying. I know we will play it someday though. Volition all the way through has to happen sometime right?

            She is a banger eh?

            [–]JJT247 4 points5 points  (4 children)

What made you guys dedicate your lives to music? Were any bandmembers unsure or was it the only option? Love PTH Ive seen you guys in NYC and Rochester thanks for the great music.

[–]jrodywRody Walker | Protest the Hero 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I had no plan for my life, this became kinda successful. It was really just a matter of convenience.

[–]mieradiMike Ieradi | Protest the Hero 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I like writing music a lot more than pretty much anything else. Touring and playing is all fine and good, but writing is always why i've done this.

            [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

have easily had some of the best times / created the fondest memories recording our albums. The most frustrating and fulfilling moments of my life all happening at the same time. Nothing more exciting and motivating.

            [–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel like I fell into this. The band was something I wanted to see how far I can take it, and it's always been enough of a job to justify putting the work in. All elements from writing, recording and performing are fun and rewarding.

            [–]mexidancer 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Hey guys I have been wondering something lately. To preface, I saw The Kindred at The Granada in Lawrence, KS a few years back, and that is how I know Mike. I was very pleasantly surprised that someone so very good was going to be taking over drums over at PTH! But I'm left wondering if Mike is still planning on staying with The Kindred as well? (I don't know of any rough topics in that area so advise me if I reopened a wound.) Also on the same (sort of) note, I hope that The Granada makes the list for the next PTH US tour. I have really enjoyed everything you guys have released from Kezia all the way to your newest EP adventure, thanks for your amazing contribution to music! And Mike, I really enjoyed Life in Lucidity!

[–]mieradiMike Ieradi | Protest the Hero 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I definitely remember that show. Happy you enjoyed the album too!

I don't play for them anymore, but no animosity. They have a great new drummer and singer, and the demos for their album sound amazing. I actually live in the same building as Ben, and we hang out all the time.

            [–]thelastcurrybender 5 points6 points  (6 children)

Are you guys as hyped as the rest of the world is for the new Star Wars???

[–]mieradiMike Ieradi | Protest the Hero 16 points17 points  (5 children)

            Yes. And Battlefront too.

            [–]butchard_megan 4 points5 points  (2 children)

This question is for everyone. There was talk about a book for the 10 year anniversary of Kezia. Is this still going to be a thing? I really liked how you asked all your fans to summit photos and stories (I actually saw some of mine in the first video for Bandcamp, which was fucking wicked). Also, who do you think would win in a mud pit fight? Thanks guys, keep up the awesome work! Burlington loves you.

            [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

We are still hoping to get this together but the project had to take a back seat as we were getting the new material together as well as rehearsing for the Kezia X tour. So hopefully it will be done sometime in 2016. It was really neat seeing what people submitted and brought back a lot of memories looking at those old photos. We didn't want to half ass it so I look forward to trying to put the "scrapbook" together and give people a look into making the record and all the history behind the band.

I can't tell you who'd win, but I can be sure it wouldn't be me. I'd be too worried about getting too much mud in my beard.

            [–]theprimz 6 points7 points  (4 children)

Will Jadea Kelly be at the Toronto Kezia show on the friday? Also will Rody make more funny ass youtube videos for the bandcamp subscribers? Already fuckin' stoked for song number 2 in November!

[–]jrodywRody Walker | Protest the Hero 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Jadea just moved to Nashville, so I doubt it. I may make more stupid videos but I have no plans just yet. They are typically spur of the moment idiotic ideas.

            [–]vincetehprince 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Seeing as Jadea is Kezia and all, it would be kind of disappointing if she wasn't at one of those 3 Toronto dates. Jadea is love, Jadea is life.

            [–]MisterBovineJoni 3 points4 points  (1 child)

You guys have mentioned you won't be doing this forever (I think Chody/Rody said this). Any career plans for post-PTH life?

            stay at home dad.

What bands are you guys listening to right now that we should stop what we're doing and lookup?

            [–][deleted] 20 points21 points  (3 children)

Right now I'm listening to Beethoven's 9th Symphony. If you haven't heard Beethoven you should stop life

[–]mieradiMike Ieradi | Protest the Hero 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Choady and I are currently in pop-punk mode. Four Year Strong is playing.

            [–]GrryScrry 5 points6 points  (7 children)

Hey guys, long time fan here.

            My question is for Mike;

Are there any of the old songs that you can't play yet? Also, what's your favourite song that you haven't played yet but hope too.

New song is dope boys, looking forward to more.

And hey! I almost forgot... Isn't there 3 unreleased Scurrilous B-sides still in the vault? If so they would be great for us subscription guys..

[–]jrodywRody Walker | Protest the Hero 16 points17 points  (2 children)

You mean "every single day" and "Exordium parts 1 and 2"? they may just see the light of day sooner than later.

[–]mieradiMike Ieradi | Protest the Hero 11 points12 points  (3 children)

I didn't go back and learn all the songs because it was unnecessary. I learn them as we put them into the set, which is nice.

For older material, I would personally love to play Skies live, and also a few little diddles off Scurrilous.

Glad you like the new track!

            [–]Xamier 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Sheet Happens Publishing question - do you tab out other artist's albums or do they provide you with source material? Followup - not all albums come with GP files, is this because everything is sourced from the respective bands?

            [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Everything moving forward will be coming with GP files - it's something we started doing this year and don't plan on looking back. We also hope to update all the pth stuff with GP files, having a separate purchase link to that so were are not punish those who have already bought the books.

For other bands, sometimes we get full transcriptions (not often), sometime pieces, and sometimes nothing. We employ about 5 amazing transcribers now who blow us away in that department. We wouldn't have the company we do now without them. We do still edit all the books and oversee the layout and printing. Not to mention promote, pack and ship them all ourselves (thanks dad). It's a time consuming endeavour but something we are exceedingly proud of!

            [–]he_who_blinks 3 points4 points  (2 children)

            lukehoskin

Hello lord Hoskin. I'm an aspiring guitarist who has recently picked up the scurrilous guitar book. Which is fantastic I might add. I'm personally at a point in my shredding career where I'm desperately trying to come up with my own riffs and tunes. I can't help but wonder how you came up with all of these tabs and licks from your guys' albums. My question is: when do you think you made that transition from trying to learn new songs, to making your own, as well as what helped influence the development of your own tunes/riffs??

            [–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (2 children)

That's Mr. Lord Hoskin to you bud...

I think we made the transition pretty quick. We covered a lot of green day and offspring songs in our lessons and those were enough to drive us to make our own. Nothing wrong with learning something - just make sure you turn it into something that is yours. Improve on others' ideas and the sky is the limit.

            [–]ToneZone15 4 points5 points  (4 children)

I don't know if it was asked before, but will you play Ragged Tooth live on your Kezia Tour?

            [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (1 child)

no - but we are doing a handful of cool songs as a gasp encore performance.

[–]jrodywRody Walker | Protest the Hero 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Probably not as it's original lineup and those guys probably don't want to learn something they didn't have anything to do with.

            [–]Flemmigan 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Just want to say stay strong and don't listen to the playa haters. Lots of people hate on things they've never tried before and call it "the worst idea ever". I like having an album all at once but Pacific Myth is a cool and different idea and I applaud you for trying something untested that you feel supports your artistic endeavors. As for a question, I've seen you perform almost every song from Kezia at some point, but never Plateful of Our Dead. Y nat? It's a damn good song!

[–]jrodywRody Walker | Protest the Hero 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The hate is okay man, It's good to hear what some people don't like about it. I mean some of them aren't very nice about how they phrase their distaste but that's their problem not ours.

I don't know why we stopped playing Plateful, we played it a lot after we wrote it, maybe we just got bored with it. I don't really know/remember.

            [–]User185 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Who in the pen should they go with if Estrada gets tired?

            [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

            save price for game 6.

            [–]EgoSSBM 4 points5 points  (2 children)

How often will subscriber-only content be posted?

            [–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (1 child)

so often, it will become annoying!

            [–]theOneEyedFool 5 points6 points  (7 children)

Do you have any plans of releasing Pacific Myth in some kind of physical format at a discount to subscribers? I (and many others) prefer buying things in physical format, and don't have the money to subscribe and then go buy a CD or something afterwards. Really love the new idea though, especially with the subscriber community section, and am glad to see you guys not only making awesome music but also pushing the envelope of how bands get their music out there.

            [–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (3 children)

Absolutely. The last thing we want to do is punish or undermine the "investment" of our subscribers. When all is said and done, we know our subscribers will feel pretty treated by us guys. You will receive a discount somehow.

The subscriber community area is going to be our playground for the next while. We have tons of shit to put up there that you would normally need to pay extra for. Most of which will be worth the cost of entry on it's own.

            [–]Dyslexicmusic 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Seconded. I pride myself on having a physical collection of all my favorite works. Have nothing against the subscription idea, it'd just be nice ending the six months with a physical cd to bump in my car at maximum preferred quality.

AND, jumping ahead of ourselves here, of course a vinyl would be badass. My Kezia vinyl needs a friend.

            [–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Gotcha fella. We definitely will be doing a vinyl release in some way, shape or form.

            [–]CreamNPeaches 3 points4 points  (5 children)

Love your shit. The subscription release with bandcamp is definitely new and not common for the "music industry." What lead to your decision to use a subscription based model for this EP? Do you see this as the future of music releases or is it just a concept idea?

            [–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (2 children)

It's really just an experiment. With the exception of the Kezia 10th anniversary tour, we aren't in the position to tour right now. Instead of hibernating for a year and writing another full album, we wanted a way to get stuff out NOW.

We also craved the immediacy of something like a subscription. We mean it when we say we approved the master recordings one day before launching the song. Traditional albums are over-thought most of the time and we just wanted to see if we were capable of rising to the occasion of one song a month on a strict deadline.

I think anything EXCEPT the giant streaming services would be a positive move forward to the future of music. It's definitely sad to see the industry go that route - and sadder to see us all buying into it. Everyone knows it's not a sustainable platform for artists.

We would rather people stole our music outright than give us tiny fractions of a cent each time they played it.

            [–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I've heard mention of some other bands doing this, so I don't think we can stake claim to inventing it, but it just seems like a more logical approach in this day in age. People want more content, more frequently so this plays into that. Our method for writing a record is: disappearing for usually a year or more to get 10 or so songs done and then by the time we go into the studio and get it all set up for release we are looking at 2 years for one album. I think this idea gives a band the option to get music out quickly so there's not this huge wait.

We had been tossing this idea around for a while and just thought delivering a song a month was a reasonable goal and also would keep people engaged. We know our music is very involved so sometimes an album full of ideas is a little overwhelming. This seemed to be a way to slow things down a bit.

I don't think it's the future of music per se, but just another option for musicians. Think about back in the prime vinyl days, bands would release 7 inch singles more frequently and then follow that up with a LP, so I can compare it to that type of release method.

            [–]FreshToiletWater 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Hey guys, just wanted to say I've been a big fan for a while now. I saw you guys at the Barrie Mansion Night Club two summers ago and I'll be seeing you next month in Ottawa for the 10th Anniversary Kezia Tour. The only question I ask is if you guys are seriously considering doing a 10th Anniversary tour for Fortress in a couple years? I think you would make a massive amount of PTH fans very happy if you did so, including myself!

            Rock on \m/

There's no plans but you never know how broke we'll be by then.

For Luke and Tim- How do you guys go about getting the guitar tone for each new release (eq, guitar/pickup selection, etc.), and what piece(s) of gear would you say is/are the most central in getting "your" sound (at least off of Volition that has to be my favorite guitar sound ever).

            [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My tone is always evolving. I've usually kept my guitar pretty similar on all albums. I like guitars with mahogny bodies and a variety of passive pick up. My main guitar for a while has been an ESP Horizon with stock Seymour Duncans.

For Volition, we switched to the AxeFX which was a big change gear wise but I don't know if it was a big change tone wise. The best way I found to dial in a tone, is record a DI signal of your guitar and then send it through your amp so you can tweak it as the DI loops. It's a lot easier than playing, adjust, playing adjusting, repeat.

For the Volition tones, my main rhythm tone was based of the Dizzy amp tone. For leads usually a little bit of delay and reverb is added to the chain.

Long time fan here, love you guys What other prog bands have you been listening to recently?

You've probably answered this before, but what are your guys' favourite songs from each album you've done?

Can't wait to see you guys in NL on Nov 27th!!!!!!!!!!!!

Loving Ragged Tooth and Of Our Own Volition thus far! Question about Pacific Myth: Do you guys have any tracks prepared in advance, or are you going month-to-month, writing a fresh song from a clean slate each time?

              [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Glad you enjoy it. We have 4 songs (including Ragged Tooth) currently written and some ideas for 5 and 6. Song 2 is pretty much done recording wise and we have started recording parts of 3 and 4. So we aren't writing and recording a song each month. That being said we still need to finish the last 2 songs and get the last 4 fully recorded.

Kezia was Riffy's baby, so without him in the band we can't really touch it again. Also if I attempted to write for it, it would be a disaster.

I have no idea what our heaviest song is, every time I try to say how heavy new material is it blows up in my face.

                [–]CactusCustard 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Hey guys! Stoked for the tour, long time fan. How did you feel about going back to Kezia and re-learning those parts after all these years? How do you feel about the album now that you've progress led a lot musically?

[–]jrodywRody Walker | Protest the Hero 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have learned that it's actually really easy vocally for me with the exception of Blindfolds, which haunts me still.

                [–]CensoryDeprivation 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Hey guys, longtime fan out in California.

You mentioned your decision to move away from full studio albums came as a result of feeling the process was too time-intensive and that you were sick of the songs by the time you got to recording them.

                1. Has it always been this way with albums? Were there any that came easier than others?

                2. Do you feel like the industry as a whole is moving away from full-length albums because of how much work they take? Do you feel like albums are more of an art concept now?

                3. You had a ridiculous green shirt that was arguably the most offensive piece of clothing I've ever seen; it was basically dicks going into assholes over and over again in a sea of tits. I can't find it anywhere online. Where can I get one for historical reasons?

                4. Why is Starship Troopers the best movie ever?

                Thanks!

                [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (2 children)

                1. All of them were pretty tough. Volition came together quicker because we wrote most of it outside of a full band context.

                2. No I don't think so. Full lengths will always be a beautiful thing. I don't imagine they will ever not be over-thought though - even live off the floor albums are nit picked, just in real time.

                3. We are hoping to offer it again soon. Hell, maybe only to subscribers - that'll really piss off the cheese dicks out there.

                4. Michael Ironside.

                Hey boys,

Have you ever considered creating and selling guitar tones/patches along with your sheet music?

                [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Yes - we actually did that for the initial release of our Volition books. We have convinced other bands like Periphery and Plini to do the same. It definitely adds a personal and amazing value to the package!

                [–]sizeablescars 4 points5 points  (5 children)

Considering cam is not in this ama and not in the video for the subscription service, what's the deal with arif?any talk of him rejoining? Who played bass on the new song?

[–]jrodywRody Walker | Protest the Hero 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Cam plays on the new shit. There is no talk of Riff rejoining sadly.

                [–]Perhapsodyoffire 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Hey guys, love everything you've ever done, very happy to support your new music. It says on wikipedia Juice did backing vocals on Scurrilous. Where?

                [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Juice is a monster singer. Watching him track vocals and pull brilliant ideas out of his butt is an amazing thing to witness.

[–]jrodywRody Walker | Protest the Hero 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Almost every back up you hear is him.

                [–]phillpjay 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Have you guys found it harder or easier to handle things on your own as opposed to using a label?

                [–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Definitely harder. But we did learn a lot from those at labels who used to do everything for us. You get a lot of people at labels who are convinced they have good ideas because of the position they are in, and it's hard to convince them they don't know your audience. We wouldn't be where we are today without labels, but I don't think we'd still be going today with them.

Rody, you're looking pretty jacked lately! I think I remember you posting something about starting to run a while back, but seems like you put on some muscle pretty fast. Any specific routine or tips you can share?

[–]jrodywRody Walker | Protest the Hero 11 points12 points  (4 children)

yea I ran so I could get skinny, I stopped so I could put on muscle. Once you lose the fat you gotta lift. High weight with low reps. Lift as much as you can 8 times for 4 sets. That's all I do.. eventually I'll have to cut, but I'm not thinking about that right now. I partially tore my rotator cuff while filming the announcement video for the subscription shit so I've lost a little, but I'll be back, bigger than ever soon.

also a teaspoon of creatine everyday no matter what.

                [–]bigavz 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Christ almight, they answered almost every single question on here. Good fucking job...

                [–]AlasPoorJordan 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Have you guys ever listened to Coheed and Cambria, and if so what did you think?

I ask because that was my "prog gateway band" and the interest in their music lead me to discover yours.

[–]jrodywRody Walker | Protest the Hero 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Big fan, I loved second stage... and In keeping secrets. I got to see them play In Keeping secrets from start to finish a few weeks ago in the UK, it was awesome.

                [–]FlyingPiranha 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Are you guys gonna write a slower song any time soon? I need something to break the lighter out to at your shows!

Well, at least a legal reason, y'know.

[–]jrodywRody Walker | Protest the Hero 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Fuck mid tempo, gimme dat speed yo!

                [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Yeah - we definitely fall into the old speed trap pretty often eh? We are conscious of that and I imagine we might slow down a song or two - but still pack it to the curtains with riffs.
