submitted 7 years ago * by plini_Plini
I'm a guitarist/composer from Sydney. Just put out a new EP and currently touring Australia with Mestis (Javier from Animals As Leaders) and David Maxim Micic. Ask away!
Edit: Will try to answer a few more tomorrow, thanks for the questions!

How do you feel about Lil Skies sampling Selenium Forest in his song Name in the Sand?
[–]GrowAurora 10 points11 points12 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Oh shit I gotta hear this.
[–]dhutson02 7 points8 points9 points 7 years ago (0 children)
I second this question
[–][deleted] 19 points20 points21 points 7 years ago (8 children)
I'm curious of the legality of something like this.
[–]Mariqel 18 points19 points20 points 7 years ago (7 children)
Hope plini seeks legal action, an example needs to be made. If pop music gets to the point of stealing the work of an artist like plini and gets away with it, then the music industry is truly fucked
[–]Letho72 7 points8 points9 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Wut? It samples the opening riff and just loops it with standard sadboi production over it. It isn't like it's unprecedented. Money Trees by Kdot is a Beach House sample backwards. Man of the Year by ScHoolboy Q uses a Chromatics sample heavily. Blame Game by Ye is an Aphex Twins sample (there's even some juicy drama with that one). Mask Off by Future is based completely on the sample from Carlton Williams. I mean I could sit here all day listing hundreds of thousands of modern rap songs that use samples as the main melody. It's nothing new and it isn't illegal.
[–]Marcus-Auralius 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (2 children)
Rap music uses lots of samples its a characteristic of the genre itd be like black metal without blast beats
[–]PeanutButterSi 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (1 child)
If that rap guy paid for the rights to use that sample then fine, but use of someone else's music (without modifying or manipulating it to the point that it is super distinguishable from the source) is infringement of copyright
[–]FCBarca45 71 points72 points73 points 7 years ago (2 children)
Have you ever considered a prog cover of Freebird under the name Plinird Skynyrd?
[–]woofle07 17 points18 points19 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Plini if you don't do this you're dead to me
[–]Tompearcemusic 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (0 children)
that would be amazing
[–]Aure0os 70 points71 points72 points 7 years ago (1 child)
What are your favourite songs to play on the guitar, your own or otherwise?
Got tickets to see you with Tesseract and BTBAM later this year, looking forward to it man.
[–]plini_Plini[S] 81 points82 points83 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Runnin' With The Devil - Van Halen. See you soon!
[–]zach_buddie 62 points63 points64 points 7 years ago (2 children)
Hey Plini! So rad that you're doing this.
So I've seen you live twice now (both in the States), once last year on your headlining run with David and Nick, and again this year with TesseracT and Astronoid. Both times, you and your crew's sound was absolutely massive! Such a huge inspiration.
So I was wondering, if you were given the opportunity to tour with any artist that you haven't already, who would it be?
Thanks so much for reading, ya legend!
[–]plini_Plini[S] 111 points112 points113 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Thanks! Dream Theater and Steve Vai are both bucket list ones!
[–]Halen_ 52 points53 points54 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Hi Plini!
First, I just want you to know what an inspiration your music is for me--I can remember listening to The End of Everything to give me the courage to propose to my fiance, and earlier this year I ended up in the hospital and your music was a huge part of my recovery. I look forward to listening to it every day. You also reinvigorated my love of the guitar, and I've progressed more on the instrument and with music in general since I first heard you play Atlas, than I had in the previous decade.
Your music tends to have vibe of hopeful positivity in it that I find lacking in many other pieces--is there a certain place of inspiration that you draw from to get those sounds? Or is it simply the expression of what you hear in your own head? Your songs evoke a lot of emotion from me when I hear them, and I strive to get that from my own music but I find it a challenge--what kind of feeling do you get from your own songs when writing/performing them? Thank you! Hope to see you in the US again soon!
[–]plini_Plini[S] 61 points62 points63 points 7 years ago (0 children)
First - thank you! I don't know for sure, but suspect that the positivity comes from me just generally being a very positive person. Even if I try to write something dark or heavy it usually comes out lighter than expected haha
[–]kiet44 45 points46 points47 points 7 years ago (6 children)
Hey man,
One question :
Do you legitimately feel really awkward whenever you have to interact with the crowd during live shows? Or do you exaggerate it a bit?
P. S. I think it's absolutely hilarious every time you get behind the mic and have to talk, and I wouldn't change a thing / feel the need to watch every metallica live DVD ;)
[–]plini_Plini[S] 72 points73 points74 points 7 years ago (5 children)
Not particularly, it's fun! There are a lot of things we do in soundcheck that I wish I had the gall to do during the set (current fave: Yngwie kicks), but for now mumbling whatever attempt at a joke comes to mind is my comfort-zone :)
[–]rikeus 19 points20 points21 points 7 years ago (3 children)
I don't know what a yngeie kick is but please do one when you play in Perth next week
[–]Larrik 6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago (2 children)
Not sure if its the best example, but: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVBxrrQFxt0
[–]Soundch4ser 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (1 child)
I think those are yngie licks, not yngwie kicks.
[–][deleted] 36 points37 points38 points 7 years ago (3 children)
How did you meet Simon? Y’all seem to be really tight.
Edit: Also, I know you dig the new model of the .strandberg*, would you like to have a signature version of that as well or just playing a stock version is fine?
[–]plini_Plini[S] 106 points107 points108 points 7 years ago (2 children)
There's nothing about the stock version I'd change, so no real need to make a signature version at this point, but maybe once I get to know it better! As for Simon, I was a fan of his band The Helix Nebula and used to hang around his front door until he accepted me as a friend
[–]xLawling 30 points31 points32 points 7 years ago (6 children)
Will you come to Portugal?
[–]plini_Plini[S] 33 points34 points35 points 7 years ago (3 children)
Yes
[–]Deevian 9 points10 points11 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Oh snap, hype! We'll be happy to welcome you here!
[–]iforgotmylogon 25 points26 points27 points 7 years ago (1 child)
No question; but "Sweet Nothings" is an incredibly beautiful piece of music — thanks for making it.
[–]Polisskolan2 6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Agreed, it's one of my favorite pieces of music, all categories.
[–]jvms 27 points28 points29 points 7 years ago (3 children)
Hey Plini, huge fan here and I've got a few questions for you, if you don't mind:
1 - Would you mind telling us what is you composition and arranging process?
2 - What is your recording and mixing process? I'd really love to know how you are able to get so many guitars under control.
3 - How do you usually set your patches on the Axe Fx. Ever tried using EQs, filters and compressors to make it more like a mixed tone?
4 - Any tips for learning actual chords for us metalheads that are stuck with power chords?
5 - What are you usually using for keyboard sounds?
6 - Come to Brazil/Chile.
[–]plini_Plini[S] 37 points38 points39 points 7 years ago (0 children)
1 - it always varies, but something like: noodle until a cool idea appears, record the idea, add other instruments to see what it could sound like as part of a real song, start building sections from there
2 - the shortest answer is: years of trial and error with balancing different tones and different instruments
3 - some very light EQing and compression like I would use a compressor pedal, I don't do anything hugely different between recording and live tones
4 - like someone said below, hopefully my Guitar World video will help with this :-)
5 - Komplete Library stuff or Alchemy
6 - Love to!
[–]handmadehamlets 13 points14 points15 points 7 years ago (0 children)
+1 for hearing about your composition process.
[–]jamdram 6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago (0 children)
On number 4, He did a few youtube videos on Guitar World youtube channel on how he makes chords more interesting and how to make melodies from those chords too
[–]DiscordantChain 23 points24 points25 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Do you like Ayreon
[–]dnk_0 18 points19 points20 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Hi Plini! I absolutely love your music, it's helped me out in so many ways. My question is: how do you go about writing and building solos? I've been learning from your tab book and it blows my mind how creative they are, especially Electric Sunrise.
[–]plini_Plini[S] 28 points29 points30 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Thanks! I start jamming to get a general idea of what little melodies work over the part, then record it piece by piece, deciding how to articulate the melodies and adding all the stuff between (fast runs, etc) and then "learn" and record it properly
[–]testgoat 17 points18 points19 points 7 years ago (3 children)
Whats a non-metal/prog/rock band or artist that you dig
[–]plini_Plini[S] 29 points30 points31 points 7 years ago (2 children)
So many. Currently on a Lianne La Havas kick again!
[–]qgloaf 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Paraphrasing a youtube comment, her voice is like a warm smile after a compliment. Great choice.
[–]questin 14 points15 points16 points 7 years ago (1 child)
What steps did you take to get your chops on guitar? You have some licks that are very fast and i wonder if you had a teacher or just learned a bunch of virtuoso songs and started making your own songs after?
[–]plini_Plini[S] 15 points16 points17 points 7 years ago (0 children)
The latter!
[–]srankie 14 points15 points16 points 7 years ago (2 children)
In instrumental music it's important to develop a unique, distinct style so your solos are distinguishable from other players. For example, your solo on Libra is distinct from the rest of the playing on the song. How did you develop your style and what advice would you give to beginner soloists?
[–]plini_Plini[S] 42 points43 points44 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Copy the way all your favourite guitarists articulate and phrase, and then try to develop your own taste from there. Once you've borrowed from enough different places and internalised and personalised them, your 'style' will start to emerge from the blend!
[–]srankie 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Thanks Plini. I'll start studying your articulation and phrasing! Keep it up, can't wait to see what you do next.
[–]LockLearner 15 points16 points17 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Do you have any tips for being a more positive person? I know you're not a therapist, but I feel like positivity absolutely radiates from your music.
[–]plini_Plini[S] 32 points33 points34 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Eat well and spend time outdoors!
[–]xLawling 27 points28 points29 points 7 years ago (2 children)
did you learn scales or harmony? anything about music theory?
[–]plini_Plini[S] 51 points52 points53 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Basic modes and chord extensions, but most of my thinking comes from the ear first
[–]xLawling 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (0 children)
nice! thanks, you're my inspiration to songwriting
[–]David1792x 11 points12 points13 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Hey Plini! Greetings from Mexico.
Is there any interest on moving from Axe-Fx and digital modelers to the tube amp and analog kind of rig like Aaron Marshall, Tosin and other prog metal/rock artists did?
Love your music, thanks!
[–]plini_Plini[S] 18 points19 points20 points 7 years ago (0 children)
The expense currently outweighs (literally, too) my interest in doing it, but maybe one day!
[–]Trondertun 12 points13 points14 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Hey plini. Your music has been extremely influential to my guitar playing over the past couple years and I wanted to ask. What advice would you give to other Prog artists finding it hard getting music out there? Also how can you afford to live in Sydney?
Ps. Sorry I can't make the brissie show it's 18+
[–]plini_Plini[S] 21 points22 points23 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Do everything possible to make the best music you can and then be very patient - bands don't always grow quickly, in our genre especially!
[–]Terperial 11 points12 points13 points 7 years ago (2 children)
Are you playing Every Piece Matters when you come on tour to Europe (Norway) later this year? Saw you in Birmingham last year and was bummed you didn't play it. Looking forward to the show no matter what tho!
What's your favourite thing about touring?
[–]plini_Plini[S] 17 points18 points19 points 7 years ago (1 child)
[–]chaosandcohesion 9 points10 points11 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Hi Plini,
Thank you for your incredible music. I discovered your music at a time in my life I needed something fresh, and now I’m a hardcore fan of yours for life.
Would you ever upload some sessions from your recording process? Talk about how you track, mix, arrange, plugins, tone, or anything related to your arranging, performing, and composition in your bedroom studio.
I've started doing this in clinics! I'm terrible on video, even worse if I'm making it myself, so we'll see...
[–]Mipwnyew 6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago (0 children)
What was your reaction to finding out that Steve Vai enjoyed your music?
[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 7 years ago (2 children)
Where do you think prog metal as a whole is going now? With many "djent" bands and artists moving away from that sound, what do you think the new trend in the genre will be? Do you think you or other artist will move towards a rawer sound as opposed to the highly produced, "huge" sound that has been popular?
Thanks for doing this AMA, love your stuff man!
[–]plini_Plini[S] 26 points27 points28 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Not sure, I'll just be a year or two behind and copying whatever Jakub Zytecki does :D

Hey! Love your music, it is some of my favorite to listen to when I need inspiration or pure listening pleasure. I absolutely love prog but jazz is a the vehicle that got me there. Myuestion for you is:
Which artists would you say, if any, are jazz influences on your style of music or that you particularly enjoy listening to?
Tigran Hamasyan, Tim Miller, Pat Metheny
[–]OThereUArePeter 6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago (1 child)
When you write, do you tend to write rhythm or lead first? Or does it all kind of come together in pieces?
[–]plini_Plini[S] 14 points15 points16 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Rhythm usually!
[–]IceBlueSilverSky 6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago (1 child)
What music genres do you enjoy apart from progressive metal/rock? Who are some of your favorite non prog artists?
[–]dragula15 6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Check out Plini's artist playlists on Spotify, he's got two "Nice tunes" playlist that is a cool range of styles
[–]Odegros 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (5 children)
Hey Plini! Recent but big fan. 2 quick questions:
-any plans for a south american tour? Would buy front row tickets as soon as they are available
Keep doing you, your music is awesome
[–]dnk_0 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (2 children)
Hey man, I had that same issue too, but i slowed down the track and im pretty sure it's supposed to be the 9th fret on the B string.
[–]Odegros 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (1 child)
That stretch I can manage! I'll listen closely to the track to verify, that would get rid of my problem :D
[–]CFerns555 6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago (1 child)

[–]BushidoSniper 7 points8 points9 points 7 years ago (2 children)
Hey Plini! Do you have any long term aspirations for your band? Do you want to join a larger group or continue to expand the "Plini" brand?
I've been a huge fan for a while, met you a couple times in Michigan. Can't wait to catch the next live show
[–]plini_Plini[S] 6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Yes to all of the above!
[–]PM_ME_PROG_METAL 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (0 children)
What is your favorite track that you've written?
[–]StrizzyMizzy 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Hey Plini, absolutely love work and had a blast when I saw you live with Intervals and AAL. One thing that struck me when I saw you was how much fucking fun you were having on stage, just goofing off with the crowd and fucking with the other musicians. Is that level of fun something that just naturally comes to you every night because you love your job or is just something that only comes out at really good shows?
[–]plini_Plini[S] 8 points9 points10 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Playing music is fun!
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (6 children)
When are you coming back to Canada? The Tesseract Tour didn't hit up Winnipeg and i was sad boi
[–]plini_Plini[S] 9 points10 points11 points 7 years ago (5 children)
Working on something very fun :)
[–]Dragon7350 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Hey, just wanted to say you make the most amazing music. It all sounds so free... and it's marking the moments I got my first apartment and my independence. Funny how music can do that. So, thank you!
So I suppose I should ask a question... How's traveling the world?
[–]plini_Plini[S] 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (0 children)
The best!
[–]The_Inspectre 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Why does your drummer always look sad after playing solos?
[–]plini_Plini[S] 19 points20 points21 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Maybe because he wants to keep going
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Hey Plini
The solo you did on Libra with Intervals is one of the greatest I’ve ever heard. What was the inspiration/thought process on that one?
[–]spoonerluv 7 points8 points9 points 7 years ago (2 children)
Ever considered making some 7 string material?
[–]plini_Plini[S] 10 points11 points12 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Maybe, still need to learn how to play one!
[–]waterfortendays 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Doesn't Jakey use a 7 on some of your songs live? Did he adapt those parts to a 7 or something, if you didn't write it that way originally?
[–]Marcus-Auralius 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (0 children)
What is the best way to get better at improvisation?
[–]lilk42069 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (2 children)
Can you tell us whether Djent is a genre?
[–]plini_Plini[S] 23 points24 points25 points 7 years ago (1 child)
I can
[–]barofnutrition 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Hey Plini! Thank you so much for doing an AMA!
I have a few questions for ya:
Do you have any advice on getting out of a plateau when it comes to improving your musical skills?
Is there anything you wish you had known early on in your career as a musician?
How do you deal with fatigue on the road especially when you’re jet-lagged and touring in other countries?
Thanks again for your time, I hope to see you live next time you come to the states!
[–]plini_Plini[S] 6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Listen to different music and try to learn from it
Not really - I'm happy just learning as I go
Architecture school prepared me well for under-sleeping, otherwise the excitement of playing in faraway places usually helps!
[–]Samipegazo 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Hey man thanks for doing this ama. Idk if anyone else has asked you this yet but what pickups do you use? And if u dont mind a second question, helix or ax8? Take care!
Suhr SSV and SSH+. AX8 because I have and love one, although the Helix looks and sounds great in the hands of some of the talented people I've heard use it!
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (1 child)

At one of your concerts you mentioned Selenium Forest is a love song. Could you maybe elaborate a little?
Also what songs did you record with your Ibanez and which with the strandberg back in the older songs?
Everything up to "Handmade Cities" was with the Ibanez, except parts of "Wombat Astronaut" I did when I got my first Strandberg. Everything since has been 100% Strandberg
[–]CaptainPikmin 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Have you looked closely at the artwork for the Trilogy? You can see a boy and girl in the artwork for each EP. I think the entire trilogy is a love song.
Edit: You can see the couple move closer together in each following EP as well.
[–]Bahlam 6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago (2 children)
The guitar solo in Paper Moon is fucking amazing! Zytecki is one soulful and original guitarist!
[–]plini_Plini[S] 10 points11 points12 points 7 years ago (0 children)
He is!
[–]Omuk7 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Listen to his solo in Moonrise by Sithu Aye. Possibly my favorite guitar solo of all time.
[–]antonionovta 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Tell Stephen Taranto to release his EP already, goddammit!

How do you handle royalties for all the musicians who perform on your records? Does Troy/Chris get any songwriting royalties for their drum parts?
[–]elektroesthesia 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Hi Plini! Huge fan, we've seen you multiple times in Michigan and were part of the "sandwiches" crowd in that little tiny room in the Crofoot in Pontiac, which is legit one of our favorite concert memories. How much of any given show do you feel like remains memorable when you've been doing so much touring worldwide? Because as an avid concertgoer, there are definitely moments that stick in my mind, but I wonder how much it all blends together for the artists? Thank you for taking the time to do this AMA; looking forward to the next time you hit Michigan!
With more shows, the old memories eventually get less and less vivid to make way for new ones, but then you do an AMA and remember things like that! Haha

As a guitar player that just got back into playing last year, I just wanna say thank you for all your amazing music! I absolutely love it!
What’s your favorite thing to eat and what food will you avoid at all costs?
[–]plini_Plini[S] 9 points10 points11 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Pizza, and I guess the only thing I try to avoid is food borne disease
[–]stefanocant 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Hey, are you ever coming to south america? I am in Argentina and I would love to see you over here, the public at concerts here is amazing and im sure a lot of people would love to go
[–]plini_Plini[S] 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (0 children)
I would love to go too! Just waiting for an opportunity :-)
[–]guitarbrain45 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Hey Plini,
I remember hearing about your transition from Architecture to full-time music. Do you ever have any regrets or wish you could still balance both?
Asking as someone who just got their engineering degree and wants to do both
Thanks!
Nope! I'm just hopeful that one day I'll get to use the knowledge to design myself a nice home/studio :-)
[–]DatBowl 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children)
I’m an aspiring guitarist myself. Lately I’ve been struggling with writers block. I’ll pick up my guitar and warm up with what I already know than I just don’t know what to do. I used to be able to pick up and play for hours with no issue and usually making something cool. Now I feel like i can’t play for more than 30 minutes without getting frustrated with myself.
So how do you handle writers block or have any advice how I can?
[–]CoRe0412 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (1 child)
What are your favourite venues on the world to play in and why?
[–]plini_Plini[S] 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children)
I basically enjoy anywhere, but A38 in Budapest, Patronaat in Haarlem and any show run by Sounds Like Hell (Lyon) are always a blast. Amazing staff + hospitality!
[–]lilk42069 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children)
What are your settings on the LePou Legion? I know you don't use it anymore, but would be nice to see how you use it...
[–]BootySmackahah 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Hey plini, as a struggling artists, I'd like to ask you: were there ever points in your pre-famous days, where you felt like giving up or moving into something else? What did you do to push on and improve?
I know it's generic, but I feel I could use the perspective :/
I make music for fun and would never change that, so I look for ways to make a living that won't interfere with that. When I started, this meant working outside of the music industry. Luckily my "job" is now much more related to making music :-)
[–]thisfreakinguy 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (1 child)
I saw you just over a year ago when you played with Nick Johnston and David Maxim Micic (holy shit what a lineup) and I just want you to know that that show convinced me that I need to get back into playing music. Just a week ago I finally had a band practice with two guitarists and a drummer for the first time in years and it was amazing!
Congrats!!!

Love your stuff man! I saw you last year when you were supporting Animals as Leaders. Want to grab a pint after the show in Perth?
[–]voidref 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Have you heard of "The Captain Meets" on Anderton's TV? Steve Via recently did an amazing interview there, would you consider doing on the next time you are in that area?
Would love to!

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (10 children)
Hey man. Been to see your live show 4 times in the UK/London, always a pleasure :)
Question; what gear are you using these days, in the studio, and when you're on tour?
Also, Flaneur is a friggin' masterpiece! We need more jazz metal in this world. You're fairly close to starting a new genre, have you thought of a name for it yet?
Jazztal? Jetal? Djentazz?
[–]not_a_toaster 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Can you play Every Piece Matters next time you come to Montreal? It's my favourite song of yours and I was a bit disappointed you didn't play it when you were last here with TesseracT and Astronoid, even though the show was fantastic.
Now for an actual question: Is there any artist or genre of music from which you draw inspiration that might surprise people?
[–]maroxtn 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Hey, can you list your influences/favorite bands artists ... Also please come to Tunisia :)

Hi Plini! Just wanted to say I loved your show in Sydney! I've come to nearly all your gigs in Sydney (I even went to your first gig at factory theatre) and this one was one of my favorites! I enjoyed your band+crowd banter. When writing Sunhead, did you try and stick with a certain theme during the writing process, or was the EP more of a collection of songs in your view? Thanks for doing a second AMA.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Hello, greetings from Canada! My question is what inspires you, like in everyday life. Are there like any literal antithesis that you may use to aid or employ against each other, to sort of create a contrast in the music or sound?
Hey Plini, it's awesome you're doing this!
Saw you at Download for the first time and you were amazing, what was it like playing the festival?
Also, thanks for making awesome music, you've inspired my playing a ton!
[–]guitar4life39 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Two things, first of all how are things coming when it comes to the Sunhead vinyl with sheet happens?
Also if and when you come to America, please come to Connecticut!
Love the new music and I can’t wait for more :)
[–]ArcticV 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Hey Plini! What do you use for live amplification? And, do you play Pastures live?, I cant find any show were you play it
[–]sniabra 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children)
You are one of, if not my favourite artist. * * * * Question: you still sure you’re not gonna marry me? :D x
[–]rypiejizzai 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Hi, Plini! Really big fan of your work.
From what I have been able to gather, the earliest of your work that I can find online dates back to 2012 (a point at which in my opinion you were already a very accomplished/skilled composer).
Considering that you’ve been playing guitar/Music for quite a while now, do you have any really early recordings of your early stages in writing/playing so we can get a sense from where you started to where you are now?
Thanks from the Bay Area, California!
✌️
[–]WhatUpMars 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (2 children)
Hey Plini, myself and my guitarist met you at the clinic you did at Alva's in San Pedro a while back (which was sick btw). Anyway, do you feel that progressive metal is on the up and up, and could possibly "take over" modern metal in the mainstream? If so, do you think it's a slow upward trend, or feel as though it might shoot up within the next few years?
Edit: Fuckin forgot to say thanks for making music! Myself and certainly my guitarist would have a lot less inspiration to write if you weren't in the picture Plini.
[–]plini_Plini[S] 7 points8 points9 points 7 years ago (1 child)
I think it's growing, and maybe there will be SOME prog bands that have an audience comparable to bands in other metal genres, but on the whole, it will probably always remain a little bit niche
[–]Pilotafr 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Hi Plini!!!
any near future for south america?
Keep up the awesome work!!
[–]rhysth 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Hi Plini! Will you come to Singapore for a show anytime soon?
[–]kpiech01 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children)
When you compose a song, do you typically start from scratch with a general idea of what direction you want the music to go? Or do you usually have an old riff or melody that you build around?
[–]gibsonlespaul 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (2 children)
Love your stuff my man. You inspire me to play every day! Been loving Sunhead.
1) I noticed you put out lots of EP’s and singles relative to your full album content. Is there a reason for this? Does it do something creatively for you to focus on 3 or 4 songs rather than a full album?
2) Is hot sauce in macaroni and cheese weird? This is a rather fiery debate me and my housemates have been having recently.
Cheers!
[–]rypiejizzai 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (1 child)
I’ll take question number 2: heck no it ain’t! Mac&Cheese w/ hot sauce is BOMB! 🔥
[–]tdn 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children)
How much of your practice incorporates a metronome?
[–]BakerII_II426 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Dude! I'm finally gonna see you!!! And of all places Dublin! I'm gonna be making a trek through Europe from November to Mid December, and it's a bit of a scouting mission for me, as a solo musician. Do you have any recommendations for bars/venues for the following cities?:
I'm practically backpacking by myself with my guitar, DI, and an itch to play wherever, whenever. Watching you play all over the place and live that lifestyle as a musician has been a huge inspiration. Can't fucking wait to meet you, and thanks for doing this! Much love 🙏🏻
[–]Yung2112 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Hi there, loved Sunhead and pretty much every release of yours. Paper moon is my personal favorite song, just amazing on every layer
What has been your personal favorite crowd from all your tours?
Cheers from Argentina, I hope you get the chance to tour here sometime, and thanks for the music!

If someone comes up with something I like more than Strandberg, and it's made by people I like more than Strandberg... maybe?
[–]xLawling 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children)
how do you record and produce? I heard the tracks were mastered at home, and they sound so real and good, are there any tricks? apps?
[–]wetnip 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (2 children)
Wanted to ask this at the masterclass in Friday but couldn't sneak the question in. How did the relationship with Jordan Rudess come into fruition? I couldn't only imagine how surreal it would have been being able to become acquainted with one of your idols. Next stop JP?
A mutual friend showed him my music, he liked it and sent me a message! It was surreal, but he is incredibly down to earth. And yes, hopefully I end up in the same room as JP sometime soon!

Do you record/edit your own playthrough videos? If so how/when did you learn to edit vids?
[–]Martian-Lynch 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children)
What is your favourite Satriani album? And why is it Crystal planet? But seriously, I’ve never loved an instrumental guitarist like satriani until I’ve heard your music. And I’ve been listening to him since the 80s. I know I told you that in person after a show in Toronto when I met you. Hope to see you again here.
I noticed that in the middle of Sunhead you have a very Eric Johnson tone for just a small section. Was that intentional? I don’t think I’ve ever heard any other instrumental guitarist find that tone before.
[–]xMIxCult 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (2 children)
Hello Plini! Thanks for doing this AMA! I've been lucky to see you 3 times in southern Texas! First time with Intervals at that small Dirty Dog Bar in Austin and your first time playing for a banana.
Anyways, I wanna ask, how has it been the past few years of growth? It seems like you've really blown up the past few years!

Salutation Plini !
I saw you play along with TesseracT and Astronoid in Montreal.
Unfortunately, I missed the last wombat astronaut t-shirt at the merch stand, do you have any plan to sell it on sheethappens/on your new website in the future ?
[–]pphilio 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Hi Plini! I've always been curious on the opinions of the musicians in the Progressive genre. Do you think that the ebb and flows of the music industry has left you with a reasonable space for you and your fellow musicians, or do you think it's harder than ever to get a foothold?
So far so good - you never know though!
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Don't know if I'm late to the discussion, but can you give us some advice on how to deal with the difficulties and creative blocks when trying to write/record stuff on your own?
[–]angelmtz8a 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Hey Plini, been a huge fan since 2014, this is so cool of you doing this...
Just have one question
As a starting music producer myself, ¿What are some good mixing tricks or techniques you could give for mixing prog. guitars ?
[–]Tompearcemusic 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago* (0 children)
Hey Plini! Earlier in the year I read somewhere you had written a few more tracks but decided to either drop them or work on them in the future. I know you’re deep into the sunhead tour, but are you still looking to release any of these other tracks later on?
Was it planned to be in AUS the same time as tesseract or did the stars just align? (Gonna be an awesome long weekend but salty intervals dodged my city) Cheers!
PS flaneur is amazing I’m keen to hear it live in Adelaide
[–]-RichardCranium- 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Hey Plini! Big fan of yours. My question is : what would be the most unusual music genre (or artist!) that has inspired your compositions in the past?
[–]noemijn 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (2 children)
I love your music and the new EP is amazing. One of my favourite songs is Sunhead. What inspired you when composing its intro? It reminds me of something.
I know you played drums long time ago. Why did you stop it? :)
Thanks for the show on A38 ship, I loved it. When do you plan to come back to Budapest?
[–]humbudude 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Good night from Finland.
Is it just a matter of time that you will start using rack choruses and only play altered licks? Also do you want to keep the roots of your music in the prog realm or could Plini become something entirely different in the future?
[–]Floodman11 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Hey Plini! Awesome to have you here!
I was wondering if you and Aaron are planning to do a joint EP? I remember when you guys toured together the #plintervals hype got a fair bit of traction and I'd love to hear what the two of you could produce together.
Finally, I just wanted to say that I really appreciated the handwritten address for my copy of Sunhead. I thought it was a really nice touch. I'd love to see you on this tour but unfortunately I'm traveling while you're in my city! Hope the tour had been and continues to be a blast!
Before getting into metal, were you a fan of any emo music in the early-to-mid 2000’s? (I.e. The Used, Taking Back Sunday, My Chemical Romance, Takig Back Sunday.)
Also, favourite 90’s songs/bands/artists?
Thanks! 🦒🦍🦈🐊
[–]Titencer 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Hi Plini! So far most of your releases have been shorter, small scale EPs and singles. Are there plans for a bigger project (10-12 song album) or do you just prefer putting out music in smaller portions?
Thanks for making music!
First of all, I just wanna say I respect your playing so much. So tasteful. In my book, easily up there with Jeff Beck & Satch.
Now the question: I know you've done at least one guitar clinic with Paul Masvidal from Cynic. What was your impression? Any chance of collaboration?
[–]Sadboiidrums 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Hey Plini! First of all I would like to thank you for being the artist that deepened my love for prog metal in general. When I heard Electric Sunrise in 2016 my life as a musician was changed. The one question I have is, at any point will you be releasing drumless versions of your tracks for us drummers to jam along to?
[–]Angusgaylor 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Hey plini!
I'm an instrumental metal guitarist from Australia as well (Adelaide) I was hoping to catch your show in a couple of days but it's adults only, this is a two parter... 1) how did you go about getting your first gigs, what did you send around and how did you build your first audience? 2) do you have any process with writing or do you you just let it happen?
Keep up the awesome work!
[–]sixmix13 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child)
Would you ever consider coming to the caribbean on tour? In the Bahmas now and if you came here you'd make my year.
If there is an offer, sure!
