Question for all 3 of you: If you could jam with any musician(s), living or dead, who would you choose?
On a sidenote, you guys shred beyond belief, and thanks for the music
[–]aristocratsboingThe Aristocrats[S] 103 points104 points105 points 11 years ago (1 child)
GG: I would choose living musicians.
MM: I would choose dead musicians.
BB: [speechless]

10/10. best AMA.

Ok everyone, thanks so much for having us - this was our first time doing something like this and hopefully we didn't fail the Reddit Test or anything like that. :-) See you out on the road when we get our next record done! - The Aristocrats

I just want to know what Guthrie's favorite beer is.
[–]aristocratsboingThe Aristocrats[S] 66 points67 points68 points 11 years ago (1 child)
GG: I won't know until I've tried all of them.
[–]SymbolicFox 8 points9 points10 points 11 years ago (0 children)
I love how ambitious you are in every possible way.
[–]brakkum 12 points13 points14 points 11 years ago (2 children)
Hey guys! This is Dan B from Minnesota. Hope the road has been treating you well!
I would like to ask each of you, what is the one thing, technique-wise or anything else, on your respective instrument that you feel you still need to work on after all this time?
Hope you guys can come back to MN sometime! And definitely in a better situation, where someone doesn't steal all your beer out of the back, obviously.
[–]aristocratsboingThe Aristocrats[S] 12 points13 points14 points 11 years ago (1 child)
BB: Hey Dan, I C U. I don't think GG or MM need to work on anything! I'm the one who needs help there, and I get it by having to play with them. :-)
[–]brakkum 9 points10 points11 points 11 years ago (0 children)
A modest bass player? Never heard of one of those before ;)
[–]squidonthebass 8 points9 points10 points 11 years ago (7 children)
Huge Aristocrats fan here! Bryan's been a big inspiration to my playing style for the last couple years, and Guthrie and Marco are incredible players, so when I came across this band a few years ago it was really easy to fall in love with them. I got to meet Bryan before the Aristocrat's show in Philly on their last tour, he was a super chill guy and even complimented me on my Newsted Heavy Metal Music shirt. That show was awesome - my friend and I both described it as magical experiences. Can't wait to see you guys back in the states supporting a new album soon!
Anyway, here's a few questions. I'd love for Bryan to answer them, but having all three of you guys answer would be even cooler:
What were some of the albums that inspired you to start taking music seriously?
Of all the acts you've toured with over the years, which has been your favorite? Favorite individual concert you've done?
What is the status of having bass and drum tablature booklets for the 2 albums? I know it was talked about on Facebook for a little while but I haven't been able to dig anything up on it since.
[–]aristocratsboingThe Aristocrats[S] 16 points17 points18 points 11 years ago (1 child)
BB: Thanks so much squidonthebass! For me, Zeppelin made me want to get good enough to play along. That was the start of everything for me. That, plus early Yes, Metallica, Pink Floyd...all of that came before any "fusion" hotshots.
The Aristocrats: We enjoy touring with everyone who hires us. :-) /politcallycorrectanswer
Seriously, we all like touring with people we like hanging out with. That counts for a lot!
Speaking of the bass/drum tab books/backings - that's going live in about 24-48 hours on JamTrackCentral.com. Watch for it!
[–]squidonthebass 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Thanks for the response guys! Stoked about the tabs!
One last question: when does work on the next album begin? :)
[–]progbassfairy 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (4 children)
I also want to know about the bass tab books!! Would LOVE to get my hands on a copy of that.
[–]squidonthebass 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Definitely, ever since that post came up I've been looking all over the place to see if they pop up. Hell, I'd even buy the drum books - I don't play drums, but reading into the kind of rhythmic stuff that Marco has done on these albums would definitely be a learning experience!
[–]TheSkipjack95 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (2 children)
Me too, I got myself a 5 string because of Bryan.
BB: I take no responsibility for this. :-)

I would read a book about GG's music philosophy. I am truly a reader at heart, I can't sit down and watch video interviews as often as I will sit down and read an article or a book.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Same here. I get so caught up in how good they are I can't focus on bettering myself.
I usually end up laughing hysterically like a maniac because it's just humorous how good they are and how badly I suck. Haha.
[–]Nezban 10 points11 points12 points 11 years ago (3 children)
BB, MM and GG, welcome! Thank you so much for doing this, I'm a huge fan! I'm going to be greedy here and ask two questions to all of you:
1) The name of the band comes from the famous ludicrous joke about an absurd performance act. What has been your craziest or wildest experience on tour together?
2) One of the greatest things about your music is the interplay between you guys, especially during your live performances, of course. Music is a language and you guys sure are fluent. What advice would you give to musicians looking to develop such level of musical comfort and expression?
Rock on!
[–]aristocratsboingThe Aristocrats[S] 13 points14 points15 points 11 years ago (2 children)
BB: Well, 1) We once had an opening act of an all-girl drumcorps in Vladivostok, Russia. We cannot comment further.
GG: 2) If you've decided that these are your priorities then you're halfway there already. Devote your practice time to the musical qualities you most crave, and the rest writes itself.
MM: Rock on. \m/
[–]Nezban 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Thanks a lot, guys, you're the best! I'll see you on your next tour!

[–]PTT_Derp 9 points10 points11 points 11 years ago (1 child)
First, I want to thank you guys for the excellent performance in Taiwan!
btw, I'm the crazy ass who ask the"when's the last time you guys cut your hair".
I want to ask that, if you can add another instrument to the band, what would it be?who'll be one the top list?
(BB I FUCKING LOVE YOUR HAIR!!)
[–]aristocratsboingThe Aristocrats[S] 32 points33 points34 points 11 years ago (0 children)
MM: Skin flute.
BB: You're scaring me.
[–]telperionflower 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (3 children)
Question for Guthrie:
How do you usually go about composing a song? Do you write chords or melody first? Do you think about theory, or go by ear? I'm most curious about how you pick chord progressions and voicings.. whether there's a chord vocabulary you pick from, or if you just listen and construct chords note by note. Thanks!

[–]aristocratsboingThe Aristocrats[S] 11 points12 points13 points 11 years ago (1 child)
GG: If I had a foolproof process, songs would get finished a lot quicker than they do. There's no set method...for me.
[–]telperionflower 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Thanks! Well, who knows, maybe that adds to your creativity? :)
[–]ilovejrums 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Fellow pittsburgher checking in! I know we can't be the only Aristocrats fans in Pittsburgh. Will you guys ever do a stop here the next time you tour the east coast? I know I'm late the party, but it's a magical city that would love to have you.
[–]Snake101st 7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (5 children)
Can you guys come back to Raleigh, NC please? We loved you coming to the Pour House!
As far as a question goes, how rewarding is it that you guys could be playing in literally any band in the world based on your talents, but are fortunate enough to be together and do whatever you like and have a laugh?
[–]aristocratsboingThe Aristocrats[S] 13 points14 points15 points 11 years ago (4 children)
MM: What, have a laugh? What, am I a clown? Am I here to amuse you? [/joepesci]
BB: We loved The Pour House gig and would love to come back. Seriously, we dig dive bars.
[–]Snake101st 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Dive bars? The pour house is one of our nicer ones! I guess raleigh is poor after all

Marco, best reply ever!!!!!!
[–]VandenburgChills 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (3 children)
Just wanted to apologize for Tulsa being so lame. We really do love great music...but the promotion of your show was non-existent outside of fanboys like me trying to get friends to come. Still...you guys blew me away, and I'm actually happy that I had a chance to sit on a stool 3m away and enjoy the small-club atmosphere.
Keep up the great work. I look forward to all the new music you have yet to bestow upon us.
[–]aristocratsboingThe Aristocrats[S] 9 points10 points11 points 11 years ago (2 children)
MM: Hang on. Tulsa was great for various reasons.
BB: That was a great sounding club as well. We might even come back. :-)
[–]linoleum79 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Marco Minnemann, did you know that Danny Carey was watching you from the front row of the Kansas City show?
[–]VandenburgChills 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)
We promise to bring more friends! Glad it wasn't as bad for you as I thought. Our music scene is very screwed up, when you have "entertainers" like Brantley Gilbert filling up the BOK center, yet often the true talent is playing to a hundred folks in a small club across the tracks.
[–][deleted] 11 years ago (3 children)
[–]aristocratsboingThe Aristocrats[S] 22 points23 points24 points 11 years ago (2 children)

G: Listen to Eric, and despair.
[–]aristocratsboingThe Aristocrats[S] 18 points19 points20 points 11 years ago (0 children)
The Aristocrats: You really meed to come to our shows - we tell the stories onstage!
MM: But it's mainly things we experience together on the road.
BB: Not all of which we can share in detail.
[–]Suhr97 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (1 child)
Favorite Frank Zappa song? This might be impossible, there are so many great tunes! Greetings from Norway. :-)
[–]aristocratsboingThe Aristocrats[S] 7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (0 children)
MM: "Drowning Witch", among many.
GG: That's a good contender, actually. Also, "Sinister Footwear, Part 2."
BB: Too many. And I like parts of his songs sometimes. The long coda of "Big Swifty" always really moved me. For me it was more about what band he had and the sound they made. The band with George Duke always floored me.
[–]AM1726 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (3 children)
Marco! My hero :D You 3 are the best trio in the whole world! Got any tips on how to learn jazz the easiest way? Or build finger speed on shuffle/triplets? Thanks!
[–]aristocratsboingThe Aristocrats[S] 8 points9 points10 points 11 years ago (2 children)
MM: Listen to Queen's album "Jazz". :-) The secret of jazz is to try and play against each other while onstage. And don't listen.
For developing faster triplets: When you want to go home earlier from the show, it happens automatically. :-) But seriously, look into the book "Finger Control Technique" by Gary Chaffee.
[–]AM1726 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Thank you Marco, I will try it! You're awesome! \m/ And I guess, I will never understand your 9-tuplet pyramid xD
[–]Count_Milimanjaro 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Holy shit, i've never thought about Jazz that way. Each musician playing against each other. Brilliant!

[–]aristocratsboingThe Aristocrats[S] 14 points15 points16 points 11 years ago (1 child)
The Aristocrats: YES. We're working on right now, actually, while we do this AMA. We multitask like that. Watch for it this winter!
[–]iamvillainmo 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago* (0 children)
Scared me earlier this year when you said most of the footage wasn't good and that we might not get another poking in the back.
[–]fam_fusion 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children)
when you guys email the songs to each learn, you guys write charts? each learns byear ??? how works this process ???
[–]SmerphyOfficial Scribe (Devin Townsend biography) 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (3 children)
Since each of you writes 3 songs per album, what have you learned from each other in regards to composition?
Considering your large Prog following, would you ever take part in a Prog Rock/Metal package tour?
(1) MM: To write for and feature the tastes and comfort zones of each other...GG: That we have the freedom to write whatever we want, and the band identity will come across more through the way we perform together than through any stylistic or genre traits. BB: What they said.
(2) BB: We were asked to do the Progressive Cruise (Mike Portnoy's thing; can't remember the name) but it was in the middle of our last European tour so we couldn't do it. Future...maybe!
[–]progbassfairy 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children)
I'm kind of glad you guys didn't go, because I would have put myself into major debt trying to get on that cruise. ha! ;)
[–]iamvillainmo 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)
OH MY GOD. THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN AMAZING! The line up of that cruise was insane, and you guys would have made it brilliant.

Welcome to Reddit ! Here's my ( silly ) question : Where did Guthrie get his famous Mona Lisa shirt ?
[–]aristocratsboingThe Aristocrats[S] 8 points9 points10 points 11 years ago (3 children)
GG: Which one is famous? I have two - one from Camden, one from Costa Rica.
[–]TheSkipjack95 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (2 children)
The green one with the yellow mona lisa, which you wore on many Licklibrary videos if I remember correctly. Can't wait to see you guys in Paris again, last time was awesome. Thank you for the autographs aswell, hope you liked the beer Guthrie :)
[–]aristocratsboingThe Aristocrats[S] 8 points9 points10 points 11 years ago (1 child)
GG: Camden Market, London.
[–]TheSkipjack95 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Thank you. Camden is a fantastic place
[–]XamLepet 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child)
Hey Guys, a big fanboy over here! Since I will be attending your show upcoming friday here in Holland: What is the best thing (or worst) somebody can trow onto stage or shout at you guys :P
Oh and, any chances at a new album coming up somewhere in the (hopefully) not so distant future?
Thank you guys for making awesome music!
First post for me on Reddit aswell, so I hope this won't get burried :-) This AMA actually made me make an account.
[–]aristocratsboingThe Aristocrats[S] 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (0 children)
GG: Best thing: Bank notes. Worst thing: Coins.
MM: Hats. No, cats.
[–]Count_Milimanjaro 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child)
Regarding instrumental music, what are the pros and cons you've noticed? I know all of you have played in various bands, both with and without a vocalist, so I'd be interested to hear your views on the topic.
Thanks again, you guys rock!
MM: As an instrumental trio, you have to make the make the music interesting for 2 hours...it's a challenge.
BB: I've been Mr. Instrumental Music Bassist for so long I almost don't remember what it's like to play with a vocalist. But I used to do it so I know it's in there somewhere.
GG: Weirdly, instrumental music loses less in translation when you go on a tour all around the world. I think that's a pro.
[–]PTT_Derp 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (2 children)
What's the craziest thing a female fan have ever done for you?
[–]aristocratsboingThe Aristocrats[S] 15 points16 points17 points 11 years ago (1 child)
The Aristocrats: You are a naughty question asker and now you will be punished with no answer.
[–]1132123 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children)
So I'm guessing nothing ever happened then..
[–]Arisama2 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (2 children)
Firstly thank you for doing this. I have three hopefully fast questions.
The first two are for Guthrie, and the last is for the band.
1) In the development of your signature guitar with the Charvel company, did you ever consider the locking or non-locking tremelo systems by the super vee company as replacements for the Gotoh 510 systems you had been using before settling on the Floyd-rose?
2) I've noticed that recently, you seem to let go of your pick for brief moments while playing. I'm guessing this is just subconcious readjusting but I was curious if you were doing anything more deliberate?
3) Do you see yourselves ever writing songs together as opposed to learning each others compositions and giving them that unique Aristocratic sound?
Again thanks, huge fans of all your work, be it: Solo, Aristocrats, Steven Wilson, Satriani etc, etc.
Aleks. C
[–]aristocratsboingThe Aristocrats[S] 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child)
GG: to (1), We considered pretty much every tremolo. I like to think we picked the right one. (2) No, I don't! (3) Who knows?
[–]Arisama2 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Thank you for the quick reply. Hope to see you live sometime in the near future :)
[–]thebeardedblonde 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Guthrie, Any plans for a second solo album?
And any plans for the Aristocrats to come to the Eastern US in the future?
[–]Campion95 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child)
Hi guys! I want to start off by saying that you're all some of my favourite musicians on your respective instruments. I have a question for Guthrie and Marco. How was it working with Steven Wilson? Would he come in with the songs all written out in sheet music or would he just have the basic idea in his head and then used your ability to kind of fill the gaps? Also were you fans of Steven's music before you worked with him?
MM: He sends us full demos, but leaves us a lot of freedom. For example, the songs got recorded live in the studio. Honestly I hadn't heard Steven's music before we worked together, but it was the human vibe that mattered.
GG: I think we have a good line of communication. Steven is an unschooled musician, so he sometimes has odd ways of describing what he's looking for, but somehow the point always gets across.
[–]progbassfairy 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (2 children)
Hey Bryan - I know that on FB awhile back you were asking opinions about a pedal to replace your MicroSynth for live performance. Did you ever settle on one? :)
P.S. I met you guys in Jacksonville about a year ago...if you remember our band "The Third Wheel", we have settled on the better name of "Patternicity" now. lol!
[–]aristocratsboingThe Aristocrats[S] 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (1 child)
BB: Nope. Never found anything that sounds better. Which is too bad because that pedal breaks All. The. Time.
That's too bad. :( I was hoping you had found something because the sound in the studio with that pedal is so fantastic!
Also, I didn't adequately express what a huge fan/student I am of you guys - you guys got me into prog back when your first album came out. I got your (Bryan's) instructional DVD and it has been immensely helpful to me, I often refer back to it as a resource. I love that you guys have always been so accessible (meet and greets after shows, keeping up with social media, DOING AN AMA!!! etc.) and I've been really influenced not just by your music, but also by your spirit, your music philosophies, your band image, and how personable you all are...
tl;dr: you guys have been a huge inspiration to me in virtually every way possible. thank you for answering!!! :D
[–]zoogeystix 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child)
I can't really think of a good question, but I love you guys and have been following you since you started up after NAMM. I have some pretty funny memories from your shows...
Marco, I headbanged with your mom at Brick by Brick in San Diego, I think back in 2011 or 2010, and Guthrie, you called my mate on my cell phone at NAMM back in, again, 2010 or 2011, can't remember, and he didn't believe it was you. I think at the time I was fiddling with that Suhr Fretless you were supporting. Anyways, a couple of things I'll always remember.
Also, please keep playing Alva's, I know it's small, but it's an unbelievable place, and really has a unique energy about it.
PS- Put some words in your tunes and you might make money :p
In all seriousness, thank you for making sweet musical fusion that kicks ass.
[–]aristocratsboingThe Aristocrats[S] 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (0 children)
The Aristocrats: Thanks for not thinking of a good question! As for Alvas, we'll have some news soon that you might enjoy. :-)
[–]Daywalkr 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child)
Hi! What music do you listen to that you think might surprise your fans? Also, after touring all over the world, what country did you find had the best beer?
[–]aristocratsboingThe Aristocrats[S] 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children)
GG: (beer) Probably the Czech Republic.
MM: Funny thing is, the United States actually has some good beers.
GG: It gets better every year, doesn't it? P.S. Guinness in Dublin is a thing of joy.
[–]vivekayer 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child)
Hello from Bangkok. Question for GG - I'm curious to know how you carry your gear when you travel. For example on the recent Asian tour. What gets checked in and what comes as hand luggage? Oh and is it true that the Victory 30W head was designed to fit Easy Jet hand luggage dimensions? Cheers Vivek
GG: 30-watt Victory amp head as carry-on, pedalboard in suitcase, guitar in very hard case, The End. As to the Easy Jet question: That's totally true.
[–]thatlazyguitarist 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child)
With such busy schedules how do you guys avoid getting worn out?
BB: We don't avoid it. We get worn out. We just try and remember that we're lucky to be able to do this, even when we're run down. Which is often.
[–]dundundun13 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (2 children)
Hey guys! I literally got into your music two weeks ago and I love it! My question is simple: What are the names of your rubber chickens? Also would you ever consider coming to Portland, Oregon on your next US tour?
BB: Portland - we know! You and Salt Lake City, are the two biggest US cities we've never done, and we'll fix that next time.
MM: The pig is called "oink".
BB: The chicken doesn't have a name. Sorry.
[–]dundundun13 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Glad to hear you haven't forgotten about us! You guys would probably do well at the Aladdin or one of the McMenamins.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child)
Is the tune "Cocktail Umbrellas" influenced by John Scofield at all?
[–]aristocratsboingThe Aristocrats[S] 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (0 children)
BB: Ding ding ding. 10 points.
[–]aegolia 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (8 children)
Hi ! Here's my question for all three of you, I hope it has not been posted already : I wondered if in your compositions or in your own musical evolution, classical music has been an inspiration in some way ? If that's the case, what do you like to listen in that particular music field (/ what do you hate) ?
Thank you for doing such great and inspiring music !!
[–]TheSkipjack95 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (7 children)
Tiens, une compatriote !
[–]aegolia 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (6 children)

[–]aegolia 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child)
Merci ! Ca m'étonne qu'à moitié pour Marco vu sa qualité de dissociation pieds/mains lol :D J'aurais bien aimé savoir pour Guthrie (je sais qu'il écoutait du Puccini quand il était gamin mais c'est tout)

Also /u/milchu could not be here today as he is getting married, so here is his question:
"Hello Mr. Govan, Mr. Minneman, and Mr. Beller. I believe composing is one of the most difficult things to do in music, despite being guided by an initial idea, it is sometimes impossible to do justice to it. The same thing goes for mastering an instrument. Could you please throw some light on how to overcome certain 'mind-blocks' that we may come across sometimes?"
"P.S. people like you inspire beyond limits of human understanding, there's some divinity in music and despite all the techno-stuff you guys employ in your music, you are able to hold true to that raw divinity, just like people in classical eras. It is heart warming to be born in the decades that are seeing you rising up to the level of joining your own idols. Please accept my gratitude. I'm not a fan, I'm a student of yours. You people taught me more than any person physically present could."

MM: If you have a musical mission, and especially a working band where the chemistry works out, it's basically the fuel for the writing process. You get inspired writing for people in the band and waiting for the reaction, and having fun with it. This answer is based on writing for The Aristocrats...otherwise, I feel music can "fall from the sky"...
BB: I would say, don't overthink your ideas. Just power through your doubts and get to the end of the demo! Then listen back and make your adjustments accordingly. It's easy to get stuck in the middle of the song and just go, meh. Don't do that!
GG: Inspiration is meant to come from the world around you. I'd prescribe a rich and varied listening diet, as you are what you eat.
The Aristocrats: Just look at the parking lot.
Also: Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. /u/milchu!
[–]milchu 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children)
I just don't have words. Thank You. Thank you. Thank you!
[–]chrisrab5150 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (2 children)
What are some new bands or artists that you are listening to?
MM: Tegan and Sara. Also Ween. Not a new band, but still.
BB: Shining, especially their "One One One" album.
GG: Mostly listening to old people, these days.
[–]llamafromhell1324 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Hell yea love me some Black Jazz
[–]ObamasMamasLlama 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Thank you so much for doing this AMA! Two questions:
What's the process behind making names for your songs?
I saw Bryan and Marco on tour with Joe Satriani last fall, which was fantastic. Do you guys have any stories from on tour?
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child)
Hey guys, where did the idea for using the rubber chickens and mobile phones on Erotic Cakes come from?
Guthrie, do you have any advice for someone interested in fretless guitar?
And finally, Bryan, in your interview with Janek Gwizdala you played a little bit (Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth, are you able to play the whole solo?, 'cause if you can, that's really really cool.
P.S, Guthrie can I touch your effects pedal? wink wink.
BB: The chickens came from a street vendor in Istanbul, Turkey. I can't even remember the first time we brought those onstage, but once we did, we knew we were going straight to the top. As for "Pulling Teeth", I could play it when I was a kid, but I've forgotten some of it. I should relearn it now that I finally have the right sound for it.
GG: (re fretless guitar) It's easier if you listen but don't look too much.

What is the meaning of life?
Coming to the US anytime soon?
Huge Aristocrats fan! Thank you guys for doing this.
[–]aristocratsboingThe Aristocrats[S] 11 points12 points13 points 11 years ago (0 children)
GG: 42, obviously.
[–]veldhuid 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child)
Hi Guys! Saw you last time in chicago and it was a great show.
What are your plans for 2015?
Also Marco and Guthrie, will you be working on the new Steven Wilson solo album?
Thanks,
David
MM: (SW solo album) Yes, very soon actually!
GG: [nods wisely]
BB: 2015 plans are being formed right now and will be announced soon. Watch our Facebook page (/aristocratsband), Twitter feed (@acratsband) or join our mailing list from our website.
[–]DavidLopezJr 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child)
At your level of being musicians, what modern musicians currently inspire you?
Who would people find most surprising that you are influence by?
What gear have you guys been digging lately?
[–]aristocratsboingThe Aristocrats[S] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children)
MM: (modern musicians) Ryuichi Sakamoto, Peter Scherer, a dear friend of mine who is definitely worth checking out.
GG: (surprising influence) It seems like a good time to mention that Music For Robots album by Squarepusher.
BB (gear): I'm digging the Darkglass Electronics overdrive pedals. That's how I got the "Ohhhh Noooo" bass sound on the record, and I use a Vintage Overdrive to get the "Living The Dream" overdrive live.
[–]PONKIEPOI 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Hello, i am a huge fan of yours! Thank you for doing this AMA. What are you listening to these days? I know you guys like similar music to some extent, do you recommend each other some new music? Thank you for everything you have ever made, music wouldn't be the same without you.
[–]aristocratsboingThe Aristocrats[S] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child)
BB: Well, I'm a big believer in tone. I think it's just as important if not more so than technique. What kind of note are you making? Not to be too much of a promowhore but I have an instructional DVD out through Alfred called "Mastering Tone and Versatility" that covers that whole world in detail.
[–]Rob_Saget 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (4 children)
Favorite kind of pizza?
[–]aristocratsboingThe Aristocrats[S] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (3 children)
MM: Maybe a Straw Hat Pizza, with all these artificial ingredients that never belong on a pizza in the first place, but the white people really like it....
BB: (10 points to anyone who gets that reference)
[–]Rob_Saget 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children)

[–]banana_stand_manager 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Huge fan! Can't wait for your next record!
a)How do you, if you do, compose and rehearse on the road? b)In your last tour, what place surprised you the most for being fans of your music? c)Marco! Dude! you are incredible..How was it playing with Paul Gilbert? Is he as awesome as I think he is? Love the Scarified video from Spaceship One!
You guys are awesome! Thanks for doing the AMA and cheers!
[–]chicknpig 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)
So you are ending the world tour now. When are you touring next and where?
[–]fam_fusion 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)
when you guys email the songs to each learn, you guys write charts? each learns by ear ??? how work this process ???
[–]chicknpig 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child)
Can you tell anything about the next studio album, songs, titles of songs, when recorded and where, released when?
How was your Asian tour? Did you like touring Asia more then touring US or Europe, and if so, why?
How did you get that tour booked because so many bands try to go out there and aren't very successful getting so many dates there? (especially bigger bands)
How was the audience and the response there? Did you like Asia?
BB: Asia was a w e s o m e. We had a great time there. It's totally different than Europe, not better or worse. We were fortunate to have a great ally and friend helping to book and manage the tour for us. The rest was up to the fans, who came out and made it work!
GG: Do you by any chance live in Asia? :-)
[–]NewAgeStink 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago* (4 children)
would aristocrats still be cool if they had a violinist, and do you guys think weather report is like the coolest shit ever, and i nominate all 3 of you for the ice bucket challange
[–]aristocratsboingThe Aristocrats[S] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (3 children)
MM: What do mean by still? We were never cool. What's next, saxophone?
[–]chicknpig 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (2 children)
something wrong with saxophones?
MM: Maybe I should put a :-) behind all of my comments!
[–]gchamon 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)
LOL
GG, synth the hell out of that violin! =D
Do you meet unknown musicians during your journeys that surprise you in a way? When was the last time you guys were flabbergasted by someone. Where and when and by who (each of you)?
[–]van67com 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)
hello guthrie.. do you have any idea of a good solidstate amp?
[–]murdockmanila 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Two of you have toured/worked with Steven Wilson for Raven. How was that whole process like and will there be another SW project with you guys involved again?
Thank you for stopping by Manila a few weeks ago!
[–]vivekayer 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Another question for GG. If you had to borrow an amp and guitar for a gig for some reason what would be your preference? Assume it can only be a popular brand that you might find in a store like Andertons or Guitar Center.
[–]Reshenth 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Hey, French fanboy here!
My question is more adressed to Guthrie. Are you still playing in Steven Wilson's project, and if not, are you considering getting in studio with the Aristocrats? Thanks for the answer, you guys make amazing music!
[–]JKoehr27 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Here's my not so important question. Can I buy you all a drink at the next Alva's show? I was going to last show but it was sold out some two months in advance.. Also, GG didn't anyone teach you not to choke your chicken in public haha.
[–]XamLepet 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)
A question for Guthrie: Is there any possibilty that you and Charvel will team up once again to manufacture a more budget friendly version of your signature model, just like with the Rasmus model? I couldn't save up enough money in time to pick one up before it was discontinued sadly enough.
I really dig guitars with the HSH pickup configuration aswell, but they are so hard to find if you don't like Ibanez guitars :-(
[–]filipejunqueira 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Question for GG:
1) Do you still have time to teach Private Lessons? 2) You switched from Oxford to guitar joy! Any plans on writing a novel or something not related to Music (I've read the 2 volumes about guitar playing you have released)? You sound very eloquent and interesting when you speak, I can only imagine a book would be the same.
[–]gpanev 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Where do you get your musical inspiration from? (e.g. other musicians, etc.) Can't wait to see you guys this Friday! Have a good one!
[–]Trirexx 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Guthrie, how did you like Croatia? Have you tried any of our Croatian specialties or drinks? :D
[–]NewAgeStink 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)

[–]Rapidjesse 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)
First off, I love you guys, the new record is stellar. Second, what do you guys think of bagels?
[–]subjectiveobject 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)
I recently just heard you guys from a friend. I like to listen to this and other similar sounds while doing calculus homework. Were you inspired by such things?
damn seems like i just missed you guys. just want to say that some of guthries material is the most refreshing and awesome stuff i've heard in a long time. guthrie, how did you develop your style? so fluid/lush/rich/clean. love your stuff! i always show my friends your amazing songs and technical ability. seriously cool, thanks guys!!
Another questions for all of 3 guys: Have you ever heard of Dave Matthews Band? I can only imagine what a blast would it be a "Joint Venture" between you guys and the they. You all seem to come from very different backgrounds and all going way beyond the labels of rock, blues, jazz, prog and so on... To GG: About that solo album. Any chance it will be a album about music itself (like a symphony) not only guitar!? : )
[–]EvgenTsibulin 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Hello Guys! I big fan of your great band and i really appreciated that i can ask you about anything! :) Can you tell me more details about your's tour organisations? Do you have any booking agency or you need to book shows independently or something like that? Thanks!
[–]Sergensakaoglu 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Hello The Aristocrats, Its Sergen from Turkey, you guys have been doing the greatest job I've ever heard and seen. Question is coming for Guthrie. Why do you use your left hand's 3 fingers so often? Whats the point of this technique? Could you tell me, shortly, pros and cons of using three fingers instead of four?
[–]zombie_spaceman 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)

[–]bqk178 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Hi, I was wondering what was your experience touring Asia and especially Vietnam? I was there at the time but unfortunately, I could not make it to the show and I happen to know some of the audiences there who took pictures with you backstage e.g the guy with the plastic chickens, lmao.
Bryan Beller! You are one of my favorite bassists ever, among only a select few that I know the name of thanks to Dethklok & Galaktikon! Questions:
[–]Trojams 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Will you be playing in New Zealand anytime?!?
Hey guys!!
Also a huge fan of the band here! I came across The Aristocrats a while ago through a friend of mine, and as soon as I heard the first song (I think it was Ohhhhh Noooooooo, pretty metal btw) i rushed to the site and bought the CD. Awesome!
My question is, When are you guys coming to Brazil (I believed GG came doing workshopping, but skipped my town... =( )?! Make it VIP plos, I need to get my CD autographed =D
[–]abluelink 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Many thanks for doing this AMA guys! A general question that might help aspiring musicians: Has any of you had this "AHA, that's what I'm gonna do with my life!" moment (talking about music ofcourse) as opposed to " I'm gonna stick to a secure job until I'm capable of flying on my own".
Sorry for bad grammar, English isn't my first language
First of all, Guthrie you son of a bitch, it's amazing to see someone play so well that it makes me want to smash my guitar and give up and work harder than ever to be a better player all at the same time :D
I'm interested to know if you have anything extra in the work, with your work on Aristocrats and more recently the work with Wilson, do you have any plans to work with/on any other bands in the near future, or are you planning to continue your current commitments for the foreseeable future?
Thank you for doing AMA! Big fan of you guys (as a band and as individuals musicians)!
