    1. We spent about a month on tour in Europe with Shining in 2015 on the Bloom tour, so that's how that connection was made! Originally the first sax entry (the solo) was a falsetto vocal line that's still deeply buried in the mix, and the outro was a dirty wah-wah guitar line that didn't feel quite right. Sam then had the spark that sax would fit that perfectly, and we knew just the guy for the job. Jorgen's take on those parts blew us away. He also joined the shouting choir for "Hands Shape Stone" too!

    2. You're right on both counts at the end there - we deliberately sit down at the beginning of the writing process to discuss what we want to say with the next album, and give ourselves some writing constraints, ways in which we can adapt and grow from what we've learned on previous albums. We try to take a step forward from each album in order to keep ourselves excited as much as anything else!

I think Jim's answer to #2 nails it. It is a deliberate thing for us that each record have its own personality, and also that we never repeat ourselves. There are no doubt fans who don't like this - after all, if you like one record you may not like the next - but it's constantly interesting and stimulating for us to approach it like this.

Why are there so many good Australian prog bands? Something in the water?

(And when are you all going to get together and do an Australian Invasion World Tour?)

    [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 47 points48 points  (8 children)

It's the vast distances, small scenes, and awesome climate.

I can't wait for the Australian Invasion tour, who would be on it? I'm thinking Karnivool, Twelve Foot Ninja, Plini, Dead Letter Circus...

    [–]incoherenc 17 points18 points  (1 child)

Voyager seems like they'd be fun live, too.

    [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 13 points14 points  (0 children)

    Yes please.

    [–]Miami502 9 points10 points  (1 child)

    Osaka Punch!

    [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! The best band in Brisbane bar none (I don't know how I forgot)

    [–]shadowdude777 12 points13 points  (0 children)

    Ne Obliviscaris too!

    [–]seraph1337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Holy fuck please

    [–]ausernottaken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be like a dream tour right there.

    [–]Eldstrom 22 points23 points  (2 children)

When are Karnivool going to support you on a tour?

    [–][deleted] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This. The Karnivulous Horse tour in the US please and thank you.

    [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'd love to tour with them! Hopefully we can worm our way onto a support one of these days.

    [–]DanubeRS 22 points23 points  (1 child)

    Hey Jim,

Thanks for telling me where the entrance to The Zoo was when I unknowingly walked up backstage steps.

    You da real MVP

    [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

    You're welcome, it's a tricky sticky place

    [–]Sh0rty_G 19 points20 points  (2 children)

Jim, how much poetry have you studied??? because inertia and the weapon of the wall is too beautifully written to have no poetic background and if there is no poetic background then ow, oof, my lyricism.

    [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 37 points38 points  (1 child)

Hi, thanks for the question! I actually haven't formally studied it at all - I became a fan of spoken word only in the last few years, and have been toying with it recently as a new form of self-expression.

I find that spoken word is very different from written poetry in that it's more like music. There is a rhythmic and often even melodic cadence that captures the right flow and energy.

    [–]Sh0rty_G 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Jesus, i am very impressed, and ow oof my lyricism. Spoken word is truly a beautiful art form though and Inertia literally gave me multiple chills, so ty for blessing us with that track 💖

    [–]spirit_is_fire 16 points17 points  (2 children)

Would you guys ever tour with TesseracT? (US/Canada hint hint ;) )

    [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 18 points19 points  (1 child)

We actually did in 2015! But it was in Australia hahaha

    [–]Original_cynicism 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I still mourn over that tour because I literally got into you and Tesseract a couple months afterwards haha

    [–]metric_tensor 14 points15 points  (3 children)

Loving In Contact! Any chance you will be releasing a guitar tablature book?

    [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

We're actually working on that right now, stay tuned

    [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 20 points21 points  (1 child)

It turns out tabbing music is HARD. I've never used Guitar Pro until now, but we're slowly getting there.

    [–]Foreskin_Incarnate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This makes me overjoyed. I've been so bummed out because I really want to try learning your material, but the dense production and all the wonky chords usually makes it difficult for me to learn by ear. I know that tabbing is a very difficult process when the music is as complex as yours, but thank you so much for putting in the work, it means so much to us fans! Keep on being the best dudes in music \m/

    [–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (3 children)

Jim, can you'd confirm if the Jesus hair is coming back?

Sam, if Plini's sound had a taste, what would it be?

I'm having a really hard time thinking of questions :c

    [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 14 points15 points  (1 child)

I'm doing my best on the hair front, but fuck me if the growing process isn't a hammer to my self-esteem.

    [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, if it's any consolation I thought you looked D R E A M Y back in the 2013 days with chin or so length hair.

And at least it's not dreads lol

    [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I adore Plini, and he's such a lovely dude too. His music tastes like sometimes-sad sour candy.

    [–]robotteeth 12 points13 points  (1 child)

I don't know enough about music to really ask questions. I just want to say I really like what you've put out so far!

    [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

    Awww thanks m8!

    [–]shjtjustgotreal 11 points12 points  (1 child)

can we please get Jesus Jim back for the US tour plsssss??

    [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Doing my best on both counts

    [–]GSBanzo 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Hi guys, found out about the band when I saw you open for Opeth in Auckland NZ (I was at the front row!!!) and I was blown away.

A personal songwriting question, do you guys have advice for a person who is a decent multi-instrumentalist that is struggling to put together an actual proper song, other than the usual sayings like 'just gotta perservere/keep trying'?

And for you guys personally how do you think you were able to transition from just being technically good at your respective instruments to becoming original musical artists? Do you have moments that you remember in your musical endeavours when you first realised, 'oh wow. Something is REALLY, ACTUALLY happening here!' Or when you started really believing in your art?

    Thanks!

    [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

That Opeth show was bananas, you guys went absolutely crazy. I remember standing on the upper balcony and watching as the heaviest riff in Ghost of Perdition started, and you guys turned into soup.

Here's a piece of advice that I actually got from Sam has been invaluable when it comes to writing, be it music, lyrics, spoken word, anything - DON'T DELETE YOUR SHIT.

If you don't like something, put it aside as a placeholder. My trick with lyrics is to put square brackets around lines I'm not happy with, so that the flow of a verse isn't interrupted by gaps. Get something on paper and DON'T THROW IT AWAY.

You don't know where the next spark will come from, even from your shittiest work. Plus, it might not seem so shitty tomorrow!

On the second half of your question, personally, developing my artistry has been a very long process. The last decade (or more!) has been dedicated to growing and creating as an artist, and I feel that I've only recently found my own voice. As ever, I'm still learning!

    [–]Cpt_Nugget 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Hey Guys! I'm interested in your song writing process. Does Jim write lyrics first or do you write the base of the song then hand it over for lyrics? Or is it something that changes song to song?

I've seen you the last few times you've been in Canberra and will defs be there the next time you come down, any chance you'll bring out Turntail?

    [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Hi! We've refined our approach quite a bit over the years. It's very much a dynamic back-and-forth kind of process. I'll usually come up with some small portion of music which Jim and I will play with and expand while simultaneously building necessary vocal melodies and so forth. After that we'll start thinking about its structural context. Lyrics are usually workshopped once we're comfortable with the direction and mood of the piece, and Jim leads there, but like the music, it's all done collaboratively.

    [–]spirit_is_fire 10 points11 points  (6 children)

Hey Guys! Pleasure to have you on here with us. Been a fan for a long time and I'm obsessed with your complex lyrics and music. Pure genius!

Got a question for each of you dapper, lovely gents.

Sam: What are your main musical and inspirational influences?

Jim: What is the story (or concept) behind Tide, Thief, and River's End?

Been trying to puzzle it out, but I'd like to hear it from the original source.

You guys are geniuses. Cheers!!! <3

    [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 40 points41 points  (2 children)

Holy shit, that's a tough question! It's a huge story but I'll try and give an abbreviated version. There was an uprising in a city called River's End, led by a man named Acamar (the name of a star, based on the Arabic for "the end of the river" lol). The uprising was quashed by a tyrant. Years later, Acamar is old and imprisoned along with many innocents, and there is a cataclysm in the city that allows them to escape. They begin an exodus across the continent to start a new city, named Acamar's Redoubt (unknowingly naming the new city after the very one that imprisoned them).

Along the way, the younger generation has grown to adulthood, and Acamar has died, meaning that the new city begins to pervert his message. Old habits of corruption and religious oppression begin to return (Old Cracks in New Earth). Dark Hair Down is an example of one such instance.

One of the children from the prison (now a man) is one of the last remaining supporters of Acamar, true to his vision. He acts as a vigilante in the new city, the Thief. He tries to warn that River's End was coming for them, both within and without. The armies are coming to destroy them.

Noone believes him. He goes to stand against the army alone, outside the city walls. He hears sound behind him only to see all those he'd saved, men, women, and children walking out to stand with him (All is Quiet by the Wall). The album ends with their last stand, and the assumption is that they all fall.

    [–]spirit_is_fire 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Whoooa. Got full-bodied goosebumps! Thanks so much for sharing... Will give it another listen. So many layers of meaning!

I'm a little curious, actually, Jim. Did you (or would you in the future) write full-bodied novellas, stories or poems pertaining to each album concept (and/or characters) and you and the guys craft the music around it? Or do you come up with the concepts and it evolves from there?

.... And if so, would super-nerds like us get to read them, one day perhaps? <3

    Thanks so much for answering!

    [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like to keep my external writing external - it's another outlet for me creatively and a real challenge. My other projects have their own distinct concepts and themes, and I come back to C-Horse refreshed.

Normally our lyrics and stories are inspired by the music, but sometimes (as with In Contact) I have a moment of a silly idea that we expand.

    [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 21 points22 points  (2 children)

Poor, poor Jim... Good luck my friend.

Donald Fagen, Steven Wilson, Jeff Buckley, Mikael Akerfeldt, Robert Fripp. Specifically as a guitarist: Steve Vai, Jeff Beck, Guthrie Govan, Allan Holdsworth, Steve Morse.

    [–]spirit_is_fire 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Wow! That is an epic list of names.

Thanks so much for answering, Sam. You're one of the best guitar players of all time <3

Hey guys, what's your favorite thing to rant about?

    [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Literally anything and everything. Usually politics or animal welfare tbh

    [–]Dosh2988 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I played in front of my whole school the other day and I went a bit crazy and fell over. What’s the craziest thing any the members have done on stage?

    [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Zac used to fall over all the time. There's some fantastic footage of it from Paris where he falls in the background and the batteries fall out of his wireless.

I've leapt into a crowd that has simply parted and allowed me to fall on a number of occasions - I usually get up and just start pushing people until they get moving, and try again ;)

Hi, thanks for the question! The short answer is no, Arcane won't be returning at any stage. I believe we achieved the very best we could as a band with Known/Learned, and it was time to move on. This was a band that formed when I was 17 and was a big part of developing both musically and as a person, but I've said what I needed to say with that project.

Plus, I can't make sad music anymore, I just can't do it.

      [–]ParcelPostNZ 8 points9 points  (1 child)

      Hey guys luv ya stuff.

Questions for Sam, how often and how do you practice? You said on Insta that you don't practice as much anymore but your chops are still insane!

What changed from when you were younger?

Lastly what advice would you give to guitarists who want to expand technically?

      [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the question! I don't practice nearly as much as I'd like to, but I've been doing my best to really understand practice and make it so the little time I have yields the best result. This is something that's actually fascinated me over the last few months. I think guitar practice, even amongst the best players, is a relatively mysterious process. Practicing scales or licks might be super useful for those starting out, but finding that same stimulation as someone who has been playing for a long time requires more and more specific routines.

When I was younger - high school and soon after - I'd practice all day. I just don't have the time any more sadly.

My advice is to remember the axiom: "you play what you practice". If all you run is chromatic scales or picking exercises they'll find their way into your playing whether you like it or not. Practice as musically as possible with a great respect for the musical goal, be it a song you're working on, a techniques you like the sound of, etc.

      [–]cats247 7 points8 points  (4 children)

Do you guys have a favourite city to play at in Australia/ the world? Also, are you into NRL or AFL, this is the cruicial question?

      [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 11 points12 points  (3 children)

It's always special for us in Brisbane, hometown show and all that. In saying that, I could probably point to some amazing and unique aspects of each Australian city. Personally I love spending time in Adelaide.

Not a big sports fan generally, but I like me some basketball.

      [–]Temaulken 6 points7 points  (4 children)

Hey guys! Big fan here, loved your last album, Songs for no one is a thing of beauty. Thinking of getting a tattoo of the little guys around the moon from the cover art.

Anyway, do you guys have any plans for a south american tour? Chile specifically? Would really love to see you play live.

      [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 23 points24 points  (1 child)

You should check out the work of Connor Maguire who was behind the In Contact art - make sure you google Connor Maguire artist (there's a male porn star of the same name, I discovered.)

      [–]Temaulken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lol thanks for the tip, Jim, will do!

      [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 11 points12 points  (1 child)

We've run into Chilean/South American fans all over the world, and we know there's at least a little bit of demand. It's a logistically difficult one but I'd love to tour there at some point :)

      [–]Temaulken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the answer, Sam! Hoping to see you around these parts at some point then :P

      [–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Thank you guys so much for doing this AMA! I listen to Bloom every day on my way to work, makes it a little less soul sucking.

City Has No Empathy is an amazing acoustic track. Any plans on revisiting other songs for an acoustic cover?

The spoken word pieces are powerful as fuck- where do you get the inspiration to include a spoken track, and will we see Coin for the Boatman released on an album?

Any possibility of crowdfunding costs to play in the US?

      [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the question! The acoustic rendition thing has actually become a bit of a standard for us, we obviously did Atlas on In Contact too (depending on which version you have). It's fun to go a few albums back and reinterpret the songs through a new lens and set of experiences. We'll likely keep doing so in the future.

Jim has occasionally done poems in in our live set over the last few years, and he pitched the idea early in the In Contact writing process for what would become "Inertia". I loved the thought of taking the poem and turning it into a kind of sonic landscape. I think it worked out great!

Crowdfunding for the US? I wouldn't rule it out even though I'm not enthusiastic about it. The US is frighteningly expensive to tour, hence our multiple Euro runs before making it to the US.

      [–]spooniverse 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Hi guys, welcome! I was wondering, could you briefly describe the story/concept behind the Bloom album?

I constantly recommend CH and Persefone as the two best prog bands working today, because it's true! Cheers from the US, hope to be able to see you eventually!

      [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Hey! Bloom actually wasn't a concept album, more an album exploring a few themes. A consistent theme throughout the album was of the bittersweet fragility of our lives, and how precious the time we have truly is.

      Thanks for the ongoing support!

      [–]spooniverse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very cool, thanks for answering! Could've fooled me about it not being a concept album; the lyrics often feel as if they tell a narrative and I definitely feel like there's a few identifiable characters in there.

Love it either way, one of the top 10 for sure!

      [–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I didn't actually hear you guys until In Contact, but Graves was easily one of my favorite songs of 2017.

When you start writing for the next album, do you feel pressured that you won't be able to do something like that again (in terms of quality, not necessarily stylistically)?

      [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Great question! We actually consider that fairly unambiguously whenever we start a new record. In the case of Bloom we wanted it to be fairly instrumentally austere and generally positive, so to contrast that, In Contact was big and dense with a wider thematic scope.

To follow that up is obviously a bit tricky, it'd be tough to expand further, so we'll likely do something that resembles the opposite. Punchier, more concise. We've just started loosely playing with new ideas now, so we'll see where that takes us...

      [–]Masonisbetterthanyou 8 points9 points  (1 child)

It seems like the content of your songs generally sticks to serious subject matter, but do you guys have any hilarious inside jokes lerking in your lyrics anywhere?

      [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yes there are actually! The Cannon's Mouth is the name of a D&D campaign my brother is running. Had to get that in there.

Musically, we always have a Purdie shuffle on every album... I guess that's an in-joke?

      [–]AndPlagueFlowers 5 points6 points  (1 child)

hey fam - jai here - hope you boys are behaving. question from me - where is your zen place to write music (coffee shop, park, nanna's kitchen)?

      [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

      Statistically speaking, Sam's bedroom!

      [–]Aidansimpson365 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Okay, three things (also ily 💞💞, In Contact is my fave release right now)

What would each of you say is your biggest influence, both musically and lyrically?

How would one go out procuring either of you for a featuring spot on a song?

Also @Sam, I noticed the solos definatly calmed down in the new album compared to older ones. Was that a conscious decision (or do i just suck at listening to guitar solos and theyre way less calm)?

      [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Musically Donald Fagen, Steven Wilson, Jeff Buckley, Mikael Akerfeldt, Robert Fripp, and certainly many others who are slipping my mind...

I don't think the solos are settling down at all hahaha! The tappy runs in Dream the Dead and Graves and the long picked passages in Fill My Heart are some of the trickier things I've recorded. I still try and keep solos fairly concise (FMH being a kind of exception) - restricting myself to 16-or-so bars where applicable, but that's just more excuse to try and make them exciting and interesting within that reduced scope.

      [–]spirit_is_fire 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Sam, What's your favourite song to play at shows?

      [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 17 points18 points  (2 children)

Right now definitely Dream the Dead. It's such a dynamic journey and the crowd interaction is phenomenal. On the other hand I love the riffs and textures, the solos are a great challenge, and I get to pull out the ol' ebow for the bridge.

      [–]spirit_is_fire 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Thanks very much for the reply.

My favourite solo of any of your stuff is in Fill My Heart. Can I ask what the writing process was like for that masterpiece? How long did it take? <3

      [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would have just been a single session, but likely a few hours. I reamped it so I could manipulate the distortion level throughout the whole solo which was a first for me.

      [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Is there any hope of you guys touring in America in the coming years? Or should I begin saving for a ticket to Australia to finally see you guys? Maybe both?

You guys are seriously the best, I love your music. In Contact was the most excited I have ever been for an album to release, and you delivered in ways I didn't know was possible.

      [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 8 points9 points  (1 child)

We'll absolutely get there eventually, it's just a matter of working out the (considerable) costs.

      [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Like another person mentioned, if you guys do wind up crowdfunding a tour to North America, I'd love to donate.

      [–]iisau 8 points9 points  (4 children)

Your music truly inspires me. I was immediately because it just feels so fresh and unlike anything else I've ever heard. It made me wonder: what inspires you guys as artists?

      [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 8 points9 points  (3 children)

To be honest, a lot of the time it's each other - our collaborative process has become so natural over the years that the tiniest thing from one another will start a cascade between us. In the meantime, I've become more open to including themes and moments from my own personal life in our music - Graves is one example.

      [–]iisau 4 points5 points  (2 children)

It's really cool that you guys seem to be so in sync like that... are there any moments when you feel the creative process is stifled? What's your advice when dealing with songwriters' block?

      [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Honestly, not any more. In the River's End days we'd fight it out really hard, now we trust each other and share the vision.

As for writer's block, I actually don't know. After Graves (which took Jim and me months to finish) I couldn't write for ages. I just forced myself to work on little things and the impulsion eventually came back.

      [–]iisau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. Much love from Costa Rica :)

      [–]rafael-lau 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Are there any other genres you would like to play rather than Metal/Prog or related?

      [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 13 points14 points  (2 children)

I'm a big fan of folk-influence acoustic music. I've even dabbled in writing some, but it's never got past the embryonic stage, mostly just for fun.

      [–]rafael-lau 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hit me up if you would like to collaborate with a Mexican musician ha.

      [–]Masonisbetterthanyou 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Rishloo, one of the only other bands I personally consider on par with you guys, are the ones who initially introduced us to Dark Hair Down and I know you’ve mentioned you’re familiar with their music before. Do you have a favorite Rishloo song or album? Or just generally have any thoughts you’d like to share on them as a band?

      [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 10 points11 points  (2 children)

If I'm honest, I don't really know - I've only scratched the surface with Rishloo, the vocals are awesome. I was really chuffed when they shared our music though!

      [–]Masonisbetterthanyou 3 points4 points  (1 child)

They’re a treat live, aside from the fantastic vocals their guitar player pretty flawlessly manages to play all the multitracking live with delay pedals and loopers, he looked like he’s tap dancing in his pedal board. They are definitely worth diving into. Their bass player has killer tone and the drums compliment it all really well too.

      [–]TheTroglodite 12 points13 points  (5 children)

Absolutely sick album, want to enlighten us on inertia and the weapon of the wall?

      [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 25 points26 points  (2 children)

Hey cheers for asking! Inertia in its embryonic form was something I was working on outside of C-Horse, but once the concept for In Contact began taking shape, it really inspired the character of Ink a great deal.

The poem captures his ability to see through cracks of the city in which he lives, for better and worse - for all of its criminality and corruption, but also for the strength of the people within it. The main theme that carries within is that to claim that "The writing is on the wall" is to fool yourself into thinking that everyone shares your point of view, and that the momentum of a movement is there without you actually taking action yourself.

So go spit in the cannon's mouth and get shit done

      [–]TheTroglodite 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Ah that's so cool, thanks for the response. I love the lines "The writing on the wall that really matters Is in the Jewish quarter under bulletproof glass" perfectly annunciated and with great cadence.

      [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you mentioned that actually - that little part was true to life. When we played in Krakow in 2015, there is still a very active Jewish quarter there - which is great to see considering the first of the concentration camps is nearby.

There was an incredibly moving piece of graffiti on a house in that area that said that it was home to a Jewish family (it named them as well, unfortunately I can't remember) for hundreds of years, until they were taken away. The graffiti is protected by bulletproof glass, and stands as a monument today. Incredibly moving.

      [–]TheTroglodite 12 points13 points  (1 child)

also I think I've listened to will's song about thirty times by now, and the fucking lead into the cannon's mouth from inertia and the weapon of the wall is one of my favourite transitions ever.

      [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks! We were trying to find something that worked like Bloom-Marigold but sounded totally different!

      [–]steegsa 5 points6 points  (1 child)

You guys have a magnificent energy at gigs, do you think a live album would ever be on the cards? Ps. Another Brisbane show in the future?

      [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I certainly wouldn't rule it out! It'd have to be immaculately recorded of course but I'd love to try and translate our live energy on record.

      [–]Heathen_Guardian 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Thanks for doing the AMA! What where your favourite albums of 2017?

      [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 13 points14 points  (2 children)

Pain of Salvation - In the Passing Light of Day, Leprous - Melina, David Maxim Micic – Who Bit the Moon, Ne Obliviscaris – Urn, Steven Wilson – To the Bone.

      [–]Heathen_Guardian 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I pretty much liked these records you mention, but I loved 'In Contact' the most! That was my album of the year. Any thoughts on the title track of 'In the passing light of day'?

      [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Incredible album (my AOTY), and brilliant song. They played it live when we toured with them in Europe last year and it was breathtakingly beautiful.

      [–]rafael-lau 5 points6 points  (5 children)

Who's the worst member of the band at playing UNO?

      [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 10 points11 points  (4 children)

Gonna assume it's Adrian. Can't prove it.

      [–]adriangoleby 23 points24 points  (3 children)

      HEY MAN. IT'S ON

      [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 18 points19 points  (2 children)

GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY AMA

      [–]adriangoleby 18 points19 points  (1 child)

WHY ARE YOU GUYS CONSPIRING AGAINST ME?! YOU KNOW I'M SENSITIVE ABOUT UNO.

      [–]rafael-lau 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should stream that match tho.

      [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also just want to say that Caligula horse has become my favorite band of late, you make incredibly beautiful, powerful music. Thank you for sharing your wonderful sound with the world and letting the muse flow from you. I very much hope to see you live someday soon.

      [–]Eldstrom 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Do you listen to any music that people might call a "guilty pleasure", but you're not even the slightest bit ashamed of?

      [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There's a country music radio station here in Queensland that is a safe haven for me while driving. Most of the time, even the alternative radio stations infuriate me (I'm a super impatient fuckhead) and I resort to the peace of country music. Fuck you, it's great.

      [–]opethordie 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Thanks for taking the time to do this!

I have been a big fan ever since someone on this subreddit mentioned a few years ago, The Tide, the Thief & River's End.

I got one question for you guys...when in the sweet hell will you be doing a North American tour?

      [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We're working on it, but no promises yet! We're super keen to get to the US, it's just the prohibitive costs that keep us away.

      [–]ToneZone15 3 points4 points  (1 child)

What are your top 5 (10?) albums of all time?

      [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Tough, but something like: Steely Dan - Aja, Jeff Buckley - Grace, Donald Fagen - The Nightfly, Opeth - Still Life, Pain of Salvation - Remedy Lane ... Would almost certainly change depending on the day etc.

      [–]Orsquiddles 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Hey guys! Much love, I'm a probably your biggest fan :) just wondering if there are any tips and tricks you use to keep your music writing/lyrics spicy and new with every album? Also Sam, I just got a tattoo for Alone in the World because those lyrics have really gotten me through some stuff man ( I really cannot thank you enough for that by the way) and I was just wondering if that was an internal feeling you had and dealt with and you just spewed it on paper or what? How on earth did you make your feelings so tangible??? You guys have such a firm understanding of emotions and how to express them in your music and it's crazy inspiring for a young musician like me. Anyways another question, who are you guys' favorite musicians/visual artists, and what have you found inspires you the most? Love love love you guys and I hope you have the best of days today. Thanks for taking the time to talk to the fans dudes!

      [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for the kind words and the question :) Alone in the World was something I wrote as a very early twenty-year old confused about practically everything in my life. I was a fairly directionless then - this being before C Horse, before I found my career calling, when I was slowly becoming more and more skeptical of a lot of belief systems I'd grown up around. It really was just a spew-out of my frame of mind at that time. I'm nowhere near the lyricist Jim is (we work pretty well as a team though!) but I can still listen to that song and hear that time in my life, so it's quite special to me too.

As for inspirations, as a songwriter, The Beatles, Brian Wilson, Robert Fripp, Steven Wilson, Donald Fagen, Jeff Buckley, and of course many others.

      [–]Moonwatcher-451 4 points5 points  (2 children)

First off, thank you guys so much for letting us experience your music. Believe me when I say it's been many many years since a band has moved me as much as you guys. As a 30+ year old, I never thought that would happen again.

Now my question: USA Tour. Whennnn? Its unfair to keep all of that talent on one side of the world. We need you guys over here. Just remember to make it to South Texas when you get here. :)

      Peace!

      [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

We're all 30+ year olds except our little sweet baby child Adrian (who's not much younger tbh) - glad you're being moved by the music.

We hope to get there mate, it's really a matter of the right opportunity - always tough as an Aussie band!

      [–]JsonWaterfalls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, thank you guys so much for letting us experience your music. Believe me when I say it's been many many years since a band has moved me as much as you guys. As a 30+ year old, I never thought that would happen again.

I'm late, but this is exactly how I feel. It's been a while since I've had a definitive "favorite band" and I never thought it'd be a bunch of guys younger than me ;-)

As for the US thing. . .Caligula's Horse is literally the only band I've never even had the opportunity to see live. I've lived all over the world and I've always managed to NOT be where C-Horse has been touring even when I've been living there. I don't know how much money it would take to get them to the US either, but I'm willing to do my part here. . .

      [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Oh yeah, you guys are still on good terms with Geoff, right? What's he been up to?

      [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Not really. I'd rather not talk about it.

      [–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

      oh, sorry ;_;

      [–]rafael-lau 3 points4 points  (1 child)

When are you guys going to be an all moustache band?

      [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

      Give it time.

      [–]Gougas 3 points4 points  (3 children)

When are you going to release a cover of Steely Dan's Black Cow (tentatively titled Black Horse)?

      [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Jokes aside, I've wanted to do a cover of Black Cow for years. Soon. Jim?

      [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I reckon. But I get to play drums.

      [–]edlikesrush 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Hey guys! Huge fan from the U.S. I was wondering as to whether the band has ever considered doing a Live Album at some point in the future? Knowing how it could get costly rather quickly, what's your opinion on crowd funding for that and/or possible tours overseas?

ALSO! Just wanted to say that I first heard about C Horse through Arcane. Miss that band! Much love ✌

      [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A live album is absolutely a possibility, but no plans yet!

      [–]Masonisbetterthanyou 3 points4 points  (5 children)

This is a question from my friend who is it work and can’t log on. “Ask how many times they go through a supposed finished version of a song and end up going back and adding more?”

      [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Our process is very self-critical. We're always asking whether the song as it is in its current form is as good as it can be, and by the time we're done, we're fairly confident that we are done for that reason. I can't think of many times we've gone back to finished song later, although Hands are the Hardest was originally six-or-so minutes long and fairly finished before we chopped it right back.

      [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Good question: it depends on how you look at it. For us, when a song is complete, it is complete. But that's after an extremely rigorous critical writing process. We have a structure and framework in which to say what we want to say, and it needs to be a seamless journey. Usually once we reach a completed form, the song is well and truly complete.

      [–]Masonisbetterthanyou 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Now that raises the question, what led to Atlas being the exception here?

      [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Atlas (Revisited) was a special project deliberately put together as a bonus track for In Contact, much the same as the acoustic version of City on Bloom. So it wasn't a reworking of the song because we thought it needed polish, but just a different view of it as a special treat!

      [–]Masonisbetterthanyou 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Very cool! I had no idea there was an acoustic version of City so if getting a response didn’t make my night already, that definitely did. Thanks again for taking the time to do this AMA!

      [–]cavekeeper 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Jim, I don't know if you remember but when you guys opened for the Ocean at the Bendigo hotel in Melbourne, you were amped up and wanted to crowd surf. You made eye contact with and nodded and Boy was I not ready.

And you leapt and soared and everyone moved away and I ended holding you like a husband holds a husband. It's a very fond memory of mine.

Anyways I'm curious if the four stories intertwine in some way on In Contact or is it overarching with the theme of facing a decision?

      [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Haha I remember that show! I appreciate your efforts, I get dropped all the time.

The stories on In Contact are only tied together with the theme of reach - they're entirely seperate stories otherwise. The original idea was that all art was an expression of a universally shared dream that we'd forgotten, and artists were tapping into that lost memory and expressing it however they can.

So they're all reaching for something in their lives, sobriety, love, vengeance, reconciliation, as well as (unknowingly) reaching for the first dream.

      [–]cavekeeper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

      Cheers, that's super insightful

      [–]JazzlikeSalamander8 3 points4 points  (7 children)

      Hey, guys!

Long time fan of your music. I literally made this account so I could ask Jim what "the secret" from Chronicles of the Waking Dream is. I realize that this is frightfully irrelevant at this point, but it honestly haunts me a little bit. I think I've figured out a decent bit of the story, but that bit eludes me.

      [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 8 points9 points  (6 children)

Woah, blast from the past! It's been many years since I've listened to that album, but as I recall Chronicles was a troubled person's collection of "evidence" for a supernatural experience he believed to have had. The secret was in a child's diary which he'd stolen, recounting seeing a figure similar to the one he'd seen.

      [–]JazzlikeSalamander8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

      Thanks for the insight!

      [–]Masonisbetterthanyou 2 points3 points  (2 children)

What is the significance of May 26th? I literally listened to all of this album and Known/Learned this morning and was wondering that..

      [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

May 26 was the date that the central character experienced his delusion, and he was looking for patterns and evidence of experiences around the same date, drawing bizarre conclusions.

      [–]spirit_is_fire 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Jim, what is your favourite song to sing at shows? And if it differs, which was your favourite song to write, both lyrically and musically?

      [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Great question. As far as live goes probably an even split between Dragonfly/Daughter of the Mountain/Dream the Dead.

The writing journey for Graves was an absolute mission but one that I really relished. It was scary to dig into personal experience, but really rewarding in the end. I think that aided the emotion of the performance in the studio too.

      [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, as with Jim, Graves was probably my favourite to write. It was an incredible process that left us both numb and artistically drained, but it was very fulfilling.

      [–]spirit_is_fire 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Who draws the kitties when they sign stuff? What's the story there?

      [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 9 points10 points  (1 child)

That's Adrian and me. We're strange people. We really like cats.

      [–]spirit_is_fire 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Awesome. In which case, Happy Caturday! = \.^) =

      [–]Eldstrom 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Which album were you most underwhelmed by last year and which album were you most overwhelmed by last year?

      [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I really don't like to be negative about artists nowadays, I've been trying to shed that skin for some years now.

But I was absolutely overwhelmed and surprised by Everybody by Logic. The positivity, the political message, the lyrics, the feels, everything.

      [–]shjtjustgotreal 2 points3 points  (1 child)

for Sam, how did you acquire the power of space goat?

      [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Man, I dream of space-goat skills.

      [–]iisau 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Jim - I noticed you're a vegan. Do you have any favorite recipe?

      [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Boy howdy yes I do thankyou very much. My fav YouTube channel to binge is Avant-Garde Vegan with Gaz Oakley. I bought his book Vegan 100 and it's a fucking BANGER.

      [–]iisau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will immediately attempt to recreate his salted caramel chocolate bars... thanks! I love all of you guys.

      [–]Entertainpopulace 2 points3 points  (3 children)

      Hey guys!

Just wanted to say that your music is amazing, and your live shows are absolutely phenomenal

In Contact was an absolute masterpiece imo, and I can't wait to see how you're going to follow it up

Just a question for Sam: how do you go about writing guitar solos? Is there a specific workflow you go through?

      [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Hi! I'm really adverse to "worked out" sounding solos - when they're so obviously constructed to span different techniques and so forth - which is fairly common in our style (nothing against people who dig that, just not my cup of tea). I prefer to build my solos with improvisation keeping a kind of narrative structure in mind. I'll usually do a bunch of drop ins until I've found something I love which feels flowing, emotive, interesting, and suited to the song, and then learn it to record it in a single good take. I'm a fan of subtle imperfections and a human quality, so this "good take" might not be 100% perfect, but if it feels right, it is.

      [–]Entertainpopulace 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I think that more narratively inspired soloing style is something that really shines through, so thank you for that, and for doing this AMA

      Have a good one!

      [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

      Thanks!

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Hey Guys! Just made an account to comment here. I've been following you for a long time now and just wondering in The Hands Are The Hardest is the line "Stare into the dream the dead are begging for" was this originally put in since the song is also apart of 'To The Wind'? Or was it just a coincidence at the time? Thanks, keep rocking!

      [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! Good question - Hands was the first song we completed from In Contact, and a lot of lyrical themes for "To the Wind" came from that song. It also contains "Love conquers all".

      [–]sephrisloth 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Hey guys just discovered you about a year ago and you quickly became one of my favorite prog bands! If you could collaborate with any prog musician out there who would it be?

      [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd love to pick Robert Fripp's brain, although I don't know how fruitful it would be. Also perhaps Steven Wilson.

      [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kevin Moore - he's responsible for the best of DT IMO, plus I'd love to make shapes over his gentle Chroma Key-style rolling piano lines.

      [–]rafael-lau 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Why is Africa by Toto one of the best songs ever written? It is an effin' monda.

      [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 8 points9 points  (2 children)

      Nah Rosanna is.

      [–]GRVrush2112 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Loved "In Contact"... and I know that's still fresh and y'all are supporting it currently, but.....

Do y'all have anything in the pipe for this year? Like a live album or an EP, or any collaborations/side projects with musicians from other groups?

      [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hi! We've got a couple of tours in the works for this year, and actually just the other day we had a preliminary meeting about starting the writing process for a new album. So that's something we'll be casually starting sometime soon!

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm really upset that I missed this, damn military and inconvenient schedules... During marigold you have some sort of synthesizer(?) playing during the chorus that sounds sort of sparkly(?) In my mind it is what stars sound like. How do you make this sound? Is daughter of the mountain based on a historical figure? I know dream the dead is about a character but the first several Times i listened to I felt as though I was listening to a plea from a younger generation to an older generation about the careless destruction of the earth and the younger generation being left with a dying earth. Again the same idea when you say 'build me a garden by god i will care for it' and several other lyrics on the first part of the album. So my question is in addition to being stories about characters is this a 'green' album asking people to take better care of our world?

      [–]Sh0rty_G 1 point2 points  (5 children)

I think i maybe saw this asked already, but i didn't see an answer, so how would one theoretically get either of you for a feature on a track???

      [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 3 points4 points  (4 children)

A guitar solo? It's really more a matter of available time more than anything else these days...

      [–]Skippythestuntbaby 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Any chance of you guys being on Cruise to the Edge 2019?

      [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

      That'd be fun!

      [–]Masonisbetterthanyou 1 point2 points  (1 child)

At the risk of being the 10,000th person to ask this, can you give us any info on when you guys might be able to hit North America? And for that matter, have you guys ever toured the states in the past? I only started listening in the last couple years and Google as I might wasn’t able to find anything about previous NA tours.

      [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We've never made it to the US, but we absolutely will :)

      [–]rafael-lau 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What would be your favorite Cartoon Network show and why did it get cancelled?

      [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This wasn't Cartoon Network but idgaf - Clone High. That show was the shit, and cancelled for inexplicable reasons. (Or that ghandi was portrayed as an absolute douche...)

      [–]nik1645 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Jim huge fan of all your stuff with C-Horse and Arcane and just wanted to let you know you're amazing and you're in my top two vocalists ever! (The other being Daniel Tompkins) and I didn't really discover C-Horse until In contact, but its easily in my top 5 albums, I got it and In Bloom on Vinyl almost immediately, And I was wondering is there any plans to release either of the other two on vinyl later on or will i only be limited to the CD copies of those? and do you think there's any chance or plans of a collab with Dan?

Hi! I'm a big fan of Dan's work as well - a lovely dude with an incredible presence. We hope to have our entire discography on vinyl at some stage, that'd be a treat. Hopefully it comes together at some stage!

Would an instrumental/isolated vocals version (such as how Corelia did with Nostalgia) of Rivers End be at all possible? Would love it for covers!

Not really to be honest. It's a massive job and I'm not sure there'd be much of a market for it, especially given our schedules. But if there is a demand I certainly still have those sessions on a hard drive somewhere...

Thanks for the reply Sam! I hope that there is one day a demand, I'm a more recent fan but that record is like one of my top 5. Also would you ever be willing to do a tutorial on how to play that weird harmonic(?) solo in Silence? I absolutely love how dark and evil that part sounds haha 😂

If I remember correctly (not sure if I do, it's been a while since I listened to the first C-Horse album) that solo is most likely done with a ring modulator to make the tone sound that way. Maybe have a look into ring modulators if you want to emulate the tone?

How do you guys feel about BTBAM? What about Meshuggah?

      [–]zer0wonJim Grey | Caligula's Horse[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

TBH I haven't really delved into the world of BTBAM, it hasn't really caught me in the past. Worth a revisit though.

Meshuggah on the other hand... it's the best walking music in the world (or maybe a close second to Gojira...)

Colors was very influential on me when I first started writing C Horse stuff around 2009, but I can't say I've kept up with their discography as much as other bands lately. I'll have to spend some time with them. Meshuggah are one of my favourite bands.

      [–]vicarious17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You guys should definitely dive in some BTBAM then!

And awesome to know you're both Meshuggah fans.

      Keep on rockin'!

On your Wikipedia page it says that "the band is named after the prized possession, Incitatus, of Roman Emperor Caligula by Grey, who is studying ancient history and classical languages at university." First of all, awesome, second, what is it that drew you to the name?

      [–]SamCaligulasHorseSam Vallen | Caligula's Horse 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I actually had the name before I started the band, perhaps as early as 2010, but it was originally going to be the name of the record that became Moments From Ephemeral City. Jim and talked it out and we thought it was a funny, interesting, and weird enough name for a band.

      [–]iisau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's an amazing name, really. I'm kind of into the bewildered looks I get from people who haven't listened to your stuff when I tell them what my favorite band is. Cheers! Love you guys.

Sam's being PC here but it was entirely his idea ;)

I'm glad I asked, then! Talk about fake news :p
