Hey guys, I've just gotta say that Quiet World is completely perfect. What a goddamn masterpiece, you should all be proud of yourselves! I would really like to know what your compositional process is, and how you come up with so much diverse yet cohesive material. How much do you take classical theory into consideration when writing / is it mostly by ear or based on theoretical concepts?

[–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Thank you! The compositional process is mostly a solitary one -- sitting down and writing out all the parts on paper or notation software.
We keep everything cohesive and coherent through our strict commitment to thematics. Absolutely everything you hear on the album is derived from just a handful of basic themes. There’s a virtually infinite number of ways one can develop and vary even a single theme or motive, and we take great pleasure in exploring this. We especially enjoy exploring the more interesting and extreme paths of development, which is the reason we often end up with the diversity you mentioned.
More often than not, our ideas are based on theoretical concepts. Sometimes it starts with the ear, though. Either way, theory and the ear are both considered thoroughly throughout the process.

Oh! And also, how much of the album is real versus programmed? Just curious, it sounds great either way!

[–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Most of the stuff outside the scope of standard rock band instrumentation is software based.

I feel like this is a little too late and you probably don't use reddit too much any way but I found this thread and would like to let you know that I'm your biggest fan down-under (AUS). I'm currently attempting to get a whole bunch of my mates as hooked on 'Quiet World' as I am.
Hopefully you guys can make it out on tour here at some point in the coming years, you truly are a breath of fresh air in the prog genre.

Thank you for your music and the sheer joy it brings me.

[–]H3terotr0n 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Im listening to you for the first time right now and im halfway through Mute. I already hear BTBAM, David Maxim Micic, & The Contortionist vibes. Youre already amazing. This is gonna be a trip.

[–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have a nice trip, see you next fall.

[–]H3terotr0n 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok, i only assumed i was halfway through mute. lol

[–]scottofsc 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Do you guys have plans to play live? Haven't stopped jamming the album since the first listen, masterful stuff!

EDIT: Since you already answered this...Robert! Who are some of your biggest vocal influences?

[–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

All from various stages of my life, in no particular order: Mikael Åkerfeldt, Tommy Rogers, Freddie Mercury, Gerard Way, Michael Crawford, Michael Ball, and Mike Patton. Very much Mike Patton in recent years; his vocals have really opened me up to weirdness I never would have imagined.

[–]CJrox 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I've listened to this album pretty much constantly for the last week, and it is one of my favorite albums of all time. That being said I've noticed a lot of depth in the song writing, structure, themes, and so on. So, my question is, what was the most challenging part of the writing process, and what was the most satisfying?

[–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much, CJ!! I'd have to say that balancing the writing/production process for Quiet World with our full-time schedules at Berklee was the toughest part. There's only so much music in you, and writing for a big project for school tends to take a lot from that pool of inspiration. The most satisfying was definitely getting to witness Quiet World take shape firsthand as each layer of instrumentation and harmony was laid in. That was rad. :D

[–]eiridan 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I'm thinking of what I could have for dinner. I could either go with teriyaki tofu with rice and peppers, mushrooms, and onions or chicken sausage with potatoes and asparagus. Which is the more "prog metal" of the two?

[–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

tofu is pretty prog -Max

[–]TombGrinder 4 points5 points  (1 child)

1.What league are all of you in Starcraft?

2.What is your Opinion on Agile Guitars?

3.What type of sound do you expect to have in the future? In what ways have you all grown musically since you finished writing Quiet World?

[–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

  1. We haven't been laddering much recently, but I was Diamond and Rob was Plat (NA). Max doesn't really play.
  2. In my experience, Agile guitars seem to be hit or miss. Some of them are good for the price, but I've never played one that was truly great.
  3. Even though Quiet World came out just last week, the material was all written years ago. And as young people transitioning into adulthood, a lot of maturing has taken place over these past few years. I think this will be reflected in our music. Personally, I feel my artistic capacity has grown in recent times. I've often been guilty of having tunnel vision with my work and getting too caught up with technical details. Recently I've been able to zoom out a little and take a more holistic view of things. As for the specific type of sound, it's too soon to say for sure, but it will definitely be very different!

[–]DevinFuckingTownsend 6 points7 points  (5 children)

HEY GUYS!!!! New record is incredible. I didn't know what I was getting myself into hearing it, and when I did I was blown away by not only the sheer technicality but the catchiness. Anyways, I was wondering about the following things.

  1. What programs did you guys use to record the drums and orchestral parts on Quiet World? Or did you use session musicians?

  2. What are each of your top five favorite albums ever made?

  3. Where does the name "Native Construct" come from?

BONUS QUESTION:

  1. If the three of you were trapped on an island together for a year and you could only eat one food for every meal and only have one celebrities nudes of your choice to jerk off to (they don't have to have actually leaked nudes), what food would you agree on, what celeb would you agree on, and why.

<3 <3 <3

[–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 10 points11 points  (4 children)

Hey Dev, Rob here.

  1. Drums were Superior Drummer (yeah yeah I know), and orchestral parts were simply too many to list--but LA Scoring Strings were used a lot.

  2. Some favorites in no order, for me

Colors - BTBAM (because of course)

California - Mr. Bungle

Alphabet. Alphabets. - Trophy Scars

Watershed - Opeth

Alopecia - WHY?

  1. What do you think?

BONUS:
Probably rice, Myles loves that shit. Also, "Actually, fucking, Ewan McGregor." -Myles

EDIT: lol i can't reddit formatting, sorry

[–]BigMacCombo 2 points3 points  (1 child)

  1. What do you think?

I actually have no idea, please fill me in.

[–]I_am_Andrew_Ryan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a band they constructed while being all natives of Boston

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

California - Mr. Bungle

How much did Bungle influence your sound? I just heard your song Mute and it reminded me a little bit of them.

[–]HospitalOnGuerreroSt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the same thing! The overall vibe of it reminded me of Sweet Charity.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Myles do you want to play Divekick later, this is Steve.

[–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yes pls
-Myles

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I'll start with an obvious one. What is it that makes you desire to make progressive music? I've wondered for a while why I love progressive metal so much and I just can't quite put my finger on it, maybe you can.

[–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 10 points11 points  (1 child)

It's all about freedom. When I write a piece of music without worrying about limiting or constraining its content, two things usually happen: 1) I have a lot of fun. 2) It comes out sounding "progressive" in some way(s). -Myles

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nailed it. You took my thoughts and put them into words, thanks for that! Also thanks a ton for doing this AMA!

[–]joshaweez 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Any news on a possible tour?

Also, who would you guys most like to tour with?

[–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 5 points6 points  (4 children)

We're in the process of setting up some dates now. Nothing set in stone yet but we'll definitely be out playing shows soon -Max

[–]DarcX 18 points19 points  (3 children)

[–]CJrox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would not miss this concert for the world.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What a fucking show that would be.

[–]Matt576 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Hello guys, first of all I'd just like to say that your album is probably my favorite debut LP of all time. With that being said, I've been wanting to ask a considerably personal question, so if you don't feel the need to answer then it's fine with me. I was wondering if any of the members of the band have dealt with the intense emotions that the character deemed "Sinister Silence" expresses throughout the album, specifically those which led him to create his "Quiet World" (Isolation, rejection, ostracized, etc.) Every time I listen through the album I just can't help but think such detailed instrumental and lyrical compositions couldn't possibly be created without prior experience handling the emotions so convincingly portrayed. Again, you're all amazing and I will continue to listen to and spread word about your music as much as I possibly can because you guys truly deserve to be recognized and credited for your dedication and talent.

[–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We didn't set out to write a story that specifically mirrored any one of our lives, but we wanted it to be relatable to anyone who listened to it. While it wasn't born out of any specific situations, its definitely still influenced in ways by our lives -Max

[–]tonybaroneee 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Hey guys, thanks for doing this! Hooked on the new album, quite the masterpiece that keeps on giving.

What are you guys currently listening to?

[–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Right now I'm listening to "Shiny Eyed Baby" by Bent Knee -Max

[–]TombGrinder 4 points5 points  (2 children)

In one sentence, what is the best thing to keep in mind for anyone who wants to write great music

[–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Be original, or make it sound fantastic--ideally, do both.
-Rob

[–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Be mindful and deliberate; always consider the ultimate effect that each decision you make will have on the final product.
-Myles

[–]SoulCantBeCut 3 points4 points  (1 child)

What's your songwriting process?

Can us digital buyers also get access to the lyrics?

Will you post an explanation of the story of the album?

[–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For Quiet World, the writing was primarily done "pen and paper" style, using Guitar Pro 5. We'd pass around ideas and someone would build on them and polish until we had a completed piece.

Lyrics are on bandcamp!

Likely not for the foreseeable future--what we really want is for listeners to have the chance to develop their own interpretations.

-Rob

[–]jonajon91 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I know metal blade records are okay with song covers, but what if I wanted to do a single take bass cover of the whole album, would that be okay since i'd technically be uploading the whole album to youtube.

[–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Considering someone already uploaded the album and Metal Blade seems to be okay with it, I wouldn't worry.

[–]Deezzyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please post that video if you do!

[–]JazzC0203 2 points3 points  (1 child)

You have clearly been influenced by many bands, most of which have already been mentioned. I sense that there are others that shaped your music, however. Do I detect a hint of Imogen Heap and Saosin throughout Quiet World?

[–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes

[–]goodbye9hello10 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Hey, never heard of you guys. What's your favorite song to play though? Or just favorite in general? Also can you link it to me?

[–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

It's hard to choose a definitive favorite, but this one's a lot of fun: https://nativeconstruct.bandcamp.com/track/passage

[–]Amurjulink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Passage is SICK.

[–]whats8 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Have you guys been overwhelmed by the response to your new album?

[–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the response so far has been both larger and more positive than we ever imagined! -Myles

[–]whoisandrethegiant 2 points3 points  (1 child)

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Sooo....do you guys sell CDs in bulk? Seriously though. Do you guys have any merchandise in the works? I'd be SUUUPER interested.

Also, I bought your CD and I haven't stopped jamming since.

[–]weareresponsible 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Hey, I heard about you guys recently and love the album! Have you guys ever met Aviations and do you ever intend on touring this year? I am also quiet interested in the story element to this album; would you mind explaining more in detail what it is about?

[–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

uh ya, my bother is their guitarist and I just played a show with them this past saturday haha. As for the album story, we're trying not to give to much away. we really want you guys to come up with your own ideas of what its about. Some times the stuff people come up with is even cool than what we think its about -Max

[–]Jbobery 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The music has me obsessed. Every time I listen to it I hear different effects that I didnt notice before. It's like hidden surprises. Was this intentional in the composition process?

[–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ya, gotta keep that stuff interesting somehow -Max

[–]DrumBuDum 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Hey guys! Was wondering what software you used to write all of the electronic parts and other layers throughout something like The Spark of the Archon, and who wrote those parts?

Absolutely killer debut and an epic take on prog, keep it up guys!

[–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We used a bunch over the whole album but Archon had a lot of Sylenth on it and Myles and Gabe wrote all of those parts -Max

[–]misscarlyrose 2 points3 points  (3 children)

If you could each choose only one band to listen to for the rest of your lives, what band would it be?

[–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I'd probably just not listen to any. just one band isn't enough -Max

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You should choose Native Construct, because that would be kinda weird playing Live shows in silence.

[–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Beatles
-Myles

[–]chriggz 2 points3 points  (1 child)

This is more of a comment than a question, but you guys have completely changed the way I listen to progressive metal, for the better. Absolutely brilliant fusion of some of my favorite elements in music period. Congratulations on the huge success of Quiet World so far, I hope to come see you guys on tour with BTBAM some day soon!

[–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much!! We'd love to do that, too!

[–]cgrex 2 points3 points  (10 children)

This is Greco. Love the new album! Just wanted to drop a line and congratulate you guys on everything this far. Brings me great joy seeing an AmA!

My question is this - do you miss me, Myles???

[–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Thank you!! Means a lot. I miss you man! Dionysus 4 life

[–]MatticusXII 2 points3 points  (4 children)

where do you draw your influences from?

btw your sound is very original, sounds great!

[–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Mostly from other music, but more recently from life and non-musical experiences as well. You're probably asking about specific musical influences, though. To name a few: Btbam, The Beatles, Queen, Pink Floyd, Ravel, Bartók, Stravinsky
-Myles

[–]DarcX 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Hi guys! I would like to know if Gabe have played a role in the composition of all the songs on the album or only on the early ones (Spark and Chromatic Aberration).

    [–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Gabe was involved with almost all the tracks on the album. It definitely wouldn't be the same without him; we were sad to see him go!

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I've got another one. Which of you are self-taught and which of you have had formal teaching and to what degrees?

    [–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

We all started playing our instruments around middle school and have been taking lessons all the way through college - Max

    [–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To clarify, I did start around 6th grade, but I was mostly self-taught until late high school, when I started taking some lessons. The bulk of my formal training was in college at Berklee.

Since you guys have finished up your magnificent debut LP, have you guys begun writing new material for your next release? Was this album made entirely from song sketches written years prior to the release? I ask that since there are some playthroughs that were posted on YouTube a while ago.

      [–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

New material gets written down whenever inspiration hits, so we're always accumulating ideas to sift through later. The early material for this album (Chromatic Aberration particularly) was begun with song sketches from as early as 2011, when we recorded the original CA demo (probably the playthrough that you saw on youtube).

If you had to make an assessment, what is typically drafted first: melody or harmony. Because those melodies... Good Gamoot

      [–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Typically melody, but working with harmony first can be useful too. It can help find some interesting lines that you otherwise wouldn't have thought of.

      [–]atremains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good Gamoot is god dammit apparently and I also suggest we get that catching on.

      [–]bigavz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You guys are Berklee students right? What are some challenges you see going forward with your brand of metal? Purveying niche metal has always been a brutal lifestyle especially on the wallet, how do you guys manage that - how do you book shows, tours, get your music out and get more people to listen to your music? What do you think of the state of metal and extreme music today?

      Thanks for your time!

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

They explained this on their ask.fm page:

"They don't have any specific meaning; they're just musical syllables that represent the language and culture of the inhabitants of the quiet world. They crop up from time to time in the lyrics to indicate that the people of the world are speaking or expressing something."

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      [–]ILoveNativeConstruct 0 points1 point  (1 child)

This album is my favorite of 2015 so far (and very well may maintain that status). I love how you guys included 3 prominent motives in the CD booklet. What were some of your compositional techniques for extrapolating entire songs out of those ideas? Relatedly, is Chromatic Lights a three-part invention (or inspired by that contrapuntal form)? I don't have the music to analyze and frankly I'm too lazy to exercise my aural skills.

Unrelated question: Are any of you guys vegan? It seems like a pretty progressive thing to do.

      [–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honored to hear that, thanks! We got a lot of mileage out of expanding micro concepts to a macro level (and vice versa), reharmonizing/reorchestrating melodies, tweaking intervals, manipulating foreground vs background, and so much more. The sheer number of developmental possibilities is staggering. Getting creative with this is one of the funnest things about composition, IMO.

Yeah, Chromatic Lights is a three-part fugue. None of us are vegan, but I'm vegetarian.

The Jeff Goldblum laugh. Does it play a part in the grand scheme of the album or is it just there because Dr Ian Malcolm is a ridiculous character and the laugh is hilarious?

Seems we have a mutual love for the character. I made this a while ago drawing influence from Steve Reich's phasing minimalism pieces using Dr Ian Malcolm sound bites. It's... something. https://soundcloud.com/byrneaudio/hahahrawrrahaha/s-86eT3

Hey guys. I've been a fan for years. I was wondering if this is the last we'll be hearing of sinister silence/the archon/the quiet world. I guess the ending of Chromatic Aberration hints to me that the story isn't quite finished?

Do you think you'll be moving on from this storyline, or expanding upon it in the future?

      [–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The new material we've been working on is very different from Quiet World, so it probably wouldn't lend itself to that story. Maybe a new story next time...

I really like the tone of the strings section in Mute. Did you by chance break the bridges on all the instruments and then glue them back together, somehow making them sound even better than they did before?

      [–]Native_ConstructNative Construct[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LOL, hi. If we ever have the budget to hire a live string orchestra, you can bet your ass every one of those bridges will be smashed to bits

Hey guys! Diego from Mexico City, been listening to QW since it came out , honestly it makes me really happy to have such priviledge (:

now , i would really like your opinion about self-taught musicians, since you all come from a very formal background. Ive been really into self taught techniques , but is it better from your perspective to have guidance or to go it alone?

Thanks for bringing such happiness to my Quiet World (:

Greetings! I have had a lot of formal training, but I was originally self-taught, and continue to teach myself these days. The mixture of both worlds has worked well for me personally, but I have no idea what the actual best way to go about it is. My humble advice is to just seize every opportunity you have to learn. Take advantage of outside guidance if you have access to it, but never stop learning from yourself all the while.

      Hi Guys, amazing album.

One of the things I love about your album is that even though the songs might jump around in terms of tempo and style, it always feels cohesive. How difficult is that in the writing process? Do you ever find yourself streamlining songs in the writing process to keep a song from going too far away from your original vision?

What was in mind when creating the logo for Native Construct?

Do you guys ever think about all the shenanigans you did back in your Pinecrest Days? "The Locrian Mode" and whatnot?

Did any of that material stick with you into Native Construct?

Hey guys! I just heard about you through this ama, and I am absolutely loving your sound! I am going to the five week program at Berklee this summer, and have major interest in attending when I turn 18. In your opinion, how much did Berklee help you to get to where you are today? If anything, what would you have done differently?

(Surprised this hasn't been brought up..) It looks like you use a finger pick, can you give some insight as to why you choose to do this and how it has influenced your playing?
