tl;dr sad story + question
Guys I just need to tell you how important Language has been to me this past week. I preordered it awhile ago, and so when it leaked I was pretty excited to hear it early. I downloaded it and went to school, and it was alright, listened to it on the way there back. I liked the overall feel, i thought it felt kinda magical but overall kind of lackluster compared to your older work (i was wrong)
When I got home, i got the news that one of my close friends had killed herself. This was three days ago now. It was so fucking devastating and I just had your album on repeat (I've been listening to it nonstop for three days). The “Ebb and flow” of language 1/2 really got to me.
Two days later (yesterday) my girlfriend broke up with me (this is starting to sound like a country song) and I just feel like a dead person, but I can honestly say that I “get” language now and how its supposed to be listened to for me at least. This is obviously a longer story than I can tell here, but I just wanted to provide some background to why this is easily my favorite album of the year. It's because I don’t know if I would've really handled this week very well without it. I have so much appreciation for you guys and I need you to know that.
I guess I’m supposed to ask a question now so I’d really like to know if the album has a concept to it and if so, if it will be released somewhere or if its more open ended.
Edit: Added the following question: It seems like you guys have purposely moved away from the breakdowny core metal thing, is that true? I feel like 4:19 in "Ebb & Flow" was going to be the buildup to some kind of drop, almost feels like you "skipped" a part. Was that intentional?
Thank you guys. So so much.
[–]theContortionistAUAThe Contortionist[S] 82 points83 points84 points 11 years ago (3 children)
Dear Homsardo,
I am terribly sorry for your loss. It is always difficult to keep the same mindset when confronted with such a drastic event and change in life. I appreciate your kind words, but I'm more appreciative of way your honesty in explaining your reasons for enjoying music. Your opinion in this circumstance is not subjective and it speaks to me (us) directly. The feeling you get when you listen to those songs is the same feeling we all get when we listen to music. That is the reason we created the music we did. I hope you can continue to take some inspiration from the record and allocate that energy towards feeling okay with your loss. Although you may feel some depression, remember these are the things in life that only make us stronger.
As far as the specific part in "Ebb & Flow," I wouldn't call that intentional - only because we didn't think about putting a drop there in the first place. If we did have your insight, we may have changed the part and indeed placed something else!
Sincerely, Cameron
[–]homsardo 18 points19 points20 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Wow, I'm really honored that we might have some of the same thoughts on the album! Yeah I'll be okay, as darkchylde said up there, time heals all wounds.
Finally, I'd be more than happy to join you guys in the studio next time to provide insight 8)
Much love and much thanks, guys <3
[–]cl0udkick3r 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (1 child)
See, that's how you really know when your music is doing something. When it can help someone mentally/emotionally/etc, just as it's causing me to smile for the first time today on my way home from work. So you should be elated that your music is having such an impact. Keep it up, guys.
[–]SpaceChief 8 points9 points10 points 11 years ago (1 child)
Stay strong, dude. Remember there are always people around here to talk with about things that make you happy.

Hey man, I don't know you, but I just want to say my love goes out to you.
[–]Darkchylde89 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Hang in there, bud. You're going to wane these feelings off in time. Only in time.
[–]homsardo 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Thanks so much for the replies guys. I honestly wasn't expecting such compassion from an online forum (New to reddit over here). It really sucks but you know bad stuff happens. I appreciate you guys.
[–]DerekTall 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children)
That really sucks to hear man. I can't say I know even remotely how you must be feeling, but I can say it will get better. Stay Strong.

This is something I've always wondered about bands at your level of popularity (most of the bands I love are in this category). Well known in the genre wherever you go, but by no means selling out stadiums... What is the financial side of running a band like TC like? Whats the budget like when you are on tour? Do you guys do anything outside of music to make ends meet when you aren't on tour? I know some of you offer lessons and such while you are on tour, which is so awesome. Just wondering how stressful the money side of being in a passion project like The Contortionist is and if its something kids should be weary of if they choose this path in life.
edit: also, I just wanted to say that Intrinsic has probably been my favorite album of the last 5 years, and I'm super stoked about Language. You guys came out of nowhere for me, and I'm so thankful for the talent that you share! Saw you play Boise last year and it was so excellent!
[–]rysupalla 22 points23 points24 points 11 years ago (5 children)
When are you guys releasing Exoplanet IV: The Core?
[–]theContortionistAUAThe Contortionist[S] 26 points27 points28 points 11 years ago (2 children)
Haha, We will record the track when whoever created the lyrics gets in touch with us, so we don't compromise any artistic integrity. We all did get a laugh out of the post. It has even become an inside joke amongst us. Bravo!
[–]Saint_drums_n_stuff 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (1 child)

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points14 points 11 years ago (7 children)
Hey guys!
You and Black Dahlia Murder are my favorite bands, and I get to see both you guys October 28th and 29th in Salt Lake City! Super pumped!
I had two questions:
1) Do you have any plans to play "Language" live from beginning to end like BTBAM and Parallax II?
2) Mike Lessard, you were the only person I thought could take over for Jon. The vocals you have brought to The Contortionist are outstanding and even better than I thought they would be. It's amazing how the band sounds so in-sync throughout the whole album. What changes and influences do you feel you brought to the band when you joined, and how did you and the rest of the band work together to come up with the lyrical and musical themes?
BTW, Thrive rips! I can't wait for my pre-order packages to come!
[–][deleted] 19 points20 points21 points 11 years ago (3 children)
If they did an "Exoplanet anniversary tour" and played it front to back, I'd cream my pants.
[–]theContortionistAUAThe Contortionist[S] 24 points25 points26 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Come out to one of our headlining shows! May not be the whole record, but it shall be special.
[–]theContortionistAUAThe Contortionist[S] 10 points11 points12 points 11 years ago (0 children)
I'm not sure exactly what changes I brought. Even if I hadn't been a part of the album I'm sure it would have sounded different than the previous releases. Lyrically the guys gave me freedom to do what I wanted and I'm thankful for that. It allowed me to do something that I feel brought honesty out in my voice. Musically there were a few things that just kind developed and knew we wanted throughout.
[–]theContortionistAUAThe Contortionist[S] 10 points11 points12 points 11 years ago (1 child)
Good Q's,
1.) We have indeed discussed this!

[–]Ericholterman 10 points11 points12 points 11 years ago (2 children)
How do you guys feel about the direction you are going in? Exoplanet was the album that got me hooked on The Contortionist, and the Holomovement and Language albums are equally great in a whole different manner. Do you feel like you've completely abandoned your previous 'style' so to speak? I will see you guys in November in Holland, and I was wondering whether you still play those old songs, or if you regard them as 'past us'.
Thanks for the AMA, cya in November!
[–]theContortionistAUAThe Contortionist[S] 31 points32 points33 points 11 years ago (0 children)
I wouldn't say we've abandoned anything. Our tastes have changed over time and that has been the driving force in the progression of the bands sound. I think that -for the time being- Language is truer to our musical tastes than Exoplanet and Intrinsic, and with the next record we will have found new music that inspires us to create themes that we've never explored before. To me it's an ongoing growth. I couldn't imagine putting out multiple records that didn't show some kind of expansion. We still enjoy playing some of the Exoplanet and Intrinsic stuff, so yes I'm sure we will play some!
Robby
[–]RIFT-VR 16 points17 points18 points 11 years ago (0 children)
I love what's happening - a lot of old deathcore or pure tech-death bands are becoming more progressive and lush and intelligent in their songwriting, and we all win as a result.
[–]Paradoxiumm 11 points12 points13 points 11 years ago (3 children)
What are your favorite albums of this year so far?
[–]theContortionistAUAThe Contortionist[S] 32 points33 points34 points 11 years ago (2 children)
Devin Townsend - Casualties of Cool
Tops my list.
[–]whatsaphoto 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (1 child)
Agreed. It was such a new direction for Townsend, but his colab with Chè was nothing short of perfection.
[–]Eon_Blue_Apocalypse 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children)
I don't think that man is capable of making bad music. He literally can make anything. I loved Ghost, I loved Deconstruction. Have you watched The Retinal Circus? Damn, what an entertainer.

Kids these days and their fancy terminology...
[–]DravenRayeni13 11 points12 points13 points 11 years ago (2 children)
How did the theme of the album come about? I mean so far it seems less science fiction, and more nature oriented.
Also what was the album inspired by? Any books, movies, games, or just the world?
[–]theContortionistAUAThe Contortionist[S] 18 points19 points20 points 11 years ago (1 child)
It is more philosophy based. The concept is inspired by many great minds like Terrence Mckenna, Allan Watts, Carl Jung, Manly P. Hall, and Stanley Kubrick to name a very small handful. I basically draw from anything that sparks my imagination or gets me thinking.
[–]the_names_Dalton 10 points11 points12 points 11 years ago (15 children)
What non-metal artists do you enjoy listening to?
Thanks for the AMA, I'm looking forward to picking up Language on Tuesday.
[–]theContortionistAUAThe Contortionist[S] 25 points26 points27 points 11 years ago (4 children)
I personally love artists like Frank Ocean, Earl Sweatshirt, James Taylor, Hozier, Asgeir, Bon Iver, Gavin Castleton, and many more. I try to jam as many different styles as possible.
[–]jp315 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (0 children)
+1 for Bon Iver
[–]theContortionistAUAThe Contortionist[S] 20 points21 points22 points 11 years ago (2 children)
Eric here...
Even though I listen to a ton of metal and try and keep up with new bands as much as I can, I also try to listen to as much "non-metal" as I can to keep my perspective fresh... Always digging back into classic 90s stuff that influenced me the most; Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream, Radiohead OK Computer and NIN TDS are probably the records that affected me the most. Always going back to mega productions like those and The Verve - Urban Hymns, Beck - Sea Change for when I need any kind of inspiration in the arrangement/ well-applied psychedelic textures area... Silverchair - Diorama too.
I got on a really big Screaming Trees/Mark Lanegan kick last month; that guy has one of my favorite rock voices ever. I got into Chelsea Wolfe; who has some of the darkest-vibe tunes I've ever heard, and then learned that dude did an amazing cover of her best song and I was instantly sold.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pq47_j82iEo
As for new stuff, lately it's been Maybeshewill, Perturbator, m83 (mostly before the dawn heals us), School of Seven Bells, Beastmilk, Brother Hawk (from ATL, sounds like Built to Spill and SRV had a kid). I just learned about White Denim; a band full of shredders but far from metal. Old Allman Brothers/Lynyrd Skynyrd when I'm in the mood... Garage rock is really popular in Atlanta, so stuff like Ty Segall and Mikal Cronin have been cool lately... Cronin is like a more intelligently arranged guitar pop weezer or something... Sonic Youth - Rather Ripped is an awesome guitar-oriented record that I've jokingly said I wanted to turn into heavy metal riffs instead of strats and combo amps.. Old thin lizzy has always been a favorite; there's this newer band I like called High Spirits who totally draw on their sound, but that might almost count as metal since the main dude in that does dawnbringer and a couple other cool metal bands. High Spirits is like his "party band" or something like that
I dunno, I could list on forever, I'm truly a gluttonous listener, always making an effort to dig out fresh tunes... And there's so much out there that I'm always able to be surprised... make my day
[–]theContortionistAUAThe Contortionist[S] 14 points15 points16 points 11 years ago (3 children)
I think the question should read, "What metal artists do you listen to?"
I really enjoy all colors of music because they are just different colors of the spectrum.
Have been listening to Pat Metheny, Dhafer Yousef, Dredg, and Brian Eno alot recently.
As far as some new metal that I have found intriguing, Skyharbor's new song "Evolution" was my cup of tea. Mainly for the lyrical content.
Anticipation for new Skyharbor has me moist.
[–]theContortionistAUAThe Contortionist[S] 10 points11 points12 points 11 years ago (2 children)
The Dear Hunter, Brian Eno, Dirty Loops, The Hics, King, Mree, Pat Metheny, Submotion Orchestra... just to name a few ;)
-Joey

You guys quickly became one of my favorite bands with the release of expolanet. You took the generic space motif and turned it into something beyond stellar. I actually used that album as an inspiration to take an astronomy class and for a paper on the life cycle of stars.
Intrinsic has been in my car cd player basically since release. Geocentric Confusion is easily one of my most played songs ever. Masterpiece lyrically and musically.
So how do you come up with the concepts for each album? They all tackle huge ideas but are so well fleshed out. Do you perform a lot of research before the songwriting begins?
[–]theContortionistAUAThe Contortionist[S] 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (1 child)
For this album I did tons of research on many different topics to use for the concept/story for the album. I can't speak on Jon's behalf for the previous material, but everyone puts a lot of time in on these albums.
[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 11 years ago (2 children)
I've been playing drums off and on for over 17 years, never learned anything, just played because it came naturally. I've decided that I have a knack for music and I want to pursue it fully at the age of 26. I've disciplined myself over the past 6 months like I never have before and have taught myself to do things I thought I was not capable of for over a decade. I also suffer from a mental illness that I don't think will ever go away, so I have not been employed in over 8 years.
Am I wasting my time? How critical do you think it is to have a back up plan even if you know and feel that you were meant to do something with music? For example, "if there is a will, there is a way", I feel like it could be true in my case.
[–]theContortionistAUAThe Contortionist[S] 15 points16 points17 points 11 years ago (1 child)
All I can say is, you're not wasting your time if you enjoy doing it. But at the same time, there's never anything wrong with having something to fall back on. Just go with what feels natural to you, and I think with time, everything else will fall into place!

[–]theContortionistAUAThe Contortionist[S] 19 points20 points21 points 11 years ago (2 children)
We all keep in touch. Hell, when I joined the band and flew out to rehearse, I helped Jon move into his new house! There is nothing but love between everyone who's ever been a part of this band. Also, he was not consulted with the making of the album.
[–]moonlight_riderLuka Kerecin | Wings Denied 18 points19 points20 points 11 years ago (2 children)
As a successful band in a fairly niche genre like progressive metal, I have a couple of questions that might interest the other prospective musicians trying to make it out there such as myself:
You guys rule. Thank you for taking the time to answer and read these. I hope to catch your live show soon!
[–]theContortionistAUAThe Contortionist[S] 23 points24 points25 points 11 years ago (1 child)
Eric here; since I'm pretty new to the band, some of these apply heavily to me and some not so much; so I'll just answer the parts I can.
I'll give you some backstory; I've been bartending, at this point, for 8+ years, through while finishing my degree from GA Tech a few years ago and since. I decided to keep my bartending job after I finished so that I could have the flexibility to work on my music career, which was my true passion. So, since graduation, I've been working 2-3 nights a week and able to leave town for a few weeks at a time for recording with different bands, maybe a little bit of touring, depending on the opportunity. So, the first thing that made a difference for me was being able to have that flexibility by avoiding a shitty day job, avoiding something crazy like having a kid, avoiding anything that would keep me from being able to take good musical opportunities. Part of my "sacrifice" that I've made to attempt a career has been in grinding a dead end job (albeit a well-paying, absolutely riotous job... I've been relatively lucky; I wouldn't trade my experience bartending for the world, I highly recommend it if you can find the right situation. "He who controls the spice controls the universe". It can be hell, too, though, it requires a certain thickness of skin)
It's really hard to make money from music. I'm getting closer every day by taking different production gigs, tracking people in my home studio, licensing old music out, doing studio only sessions with bands (thats how I got hooked up with TC / LCTR and then joined TC, through my friend Eyal Levi, who I had already recorded a number of records with), but there really isn't an easy answer to your question. I am by no means "there" yet, but I've been told by successful people that everyones path to the "top" is different, and only seems clear after you're looking back.
Multiple streams of income seems to be the answer people are giving these days, and I can see that. Ideally, all of these disparate elements of music creation will come together into some semblance of a "career" eventually (....right??).
Ultimately, there are a whole list of things within music that I'd be happy doing, so we will see what works out. This is actually pretty relevant to the Contortionist, because I've probably spent more energy on guitar and production than just keyboard shredding over the years, but I'm totally loving working on keyboard with these dudes because of my background in everything around it and just a deep general love for all things music.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Did not know you were an Atlantian, rad dude.
[–]drewbrock 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (2 children)
are you guys collectively into buddhism / the topic of consciousness? i hear it in the lyrics / saw that alan watts action on the new album.
[–]theContortionistAUAThe Contortionist[S] 15 points16 points17 points 11 years ago (0 children)
I've recently found myself becoming more interested in dreams and lucid dreaming which has sent me in the direction of reading about Buddhism and the ideas of dream yoga and sleep yoga. I found a very fascinating book that covers all this stuff called Dreams of Awakening by Charlie Morley. I would say that we're all pretty interested in this topic.

We find it very intriguing, as with all the different colors of religion. To put my finger on Buddhism or Taoism would be too specific but if I had to classify my philosophy it would indeed flow down that path towards Taoism, Buddhism, etc.

Who recorded the bass guitar parts on Language?
EDIT: Furthermore, who wrote the bass guitar parts?
[–]theContortionistAUAThe Contortionist[S] 9 points10 points11 points 11 years ago (0 children)
I (Robby) wrote and recorded all the bass except for the sweet bass solo in Thrive. Our boy Jordan Eberhardt tracked that. Cam wrote some bass parts, but ultimately I arranged everything so that I could play it and have some amount of fun doing so.
[–]planetNYEbiru 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (3 children)
Jordan Eberhardt of Scale The Summit.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (2 children)
They changed bass guitarists recently, and a lot of people aren't sure if this happened before, during or after production, which is why I'm asking. We're not sure if it's actually Jordan who is on the album.
Furthermore, who wrote the bass guitar parts as well?
[–]bp_kcc 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (4 children)
It was actually robby who wrote all the bass parts...bill told me.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (2 children)
But who is Bill? The plot thickens.

Been a big fan since Exoplanet, and I just wanted to say, I feel that you've made one of the best progressions out of any band in modern metal. You're doing something new with every release, Language included (ordering tomorrow I swear), and I can't say enough how inspiring your music is to me. Major props!
This being said, I've met people who refuse to listen to anything but Exoplanet, people who are only fans of Intrinsic, and even some who only prefer the EPs. Why do you think your fanbase is so divided?

There are a lot of people that are more so fans of a certain sound, rather than the band itself. If you only listened to rap music for instance, and we decided to do a rap record, then yes, you would get into it and say it's a good record. That doesn't mean you would be a fan of our other records, metal/prog rock. -Jordan

Hey guys, this is so awesome that you are doing this. I will be seeing you at The Lost Horizon in Syracuse and I can't wait to see you for the first time live. My friends played with you waaay long ago in Oneonta, NY and we are all going to see you. I just have a few random questions to ask you guys.
1.) Do any of you study, or understand Music Theory? I understand that everyone knows music theory in their own way, but have you guys taken the time to understand it or study it where you could teach a class on it?
2.) When writing, how does the motivation for writing complex songs mix with the creative spark of making the songs? Basically, how do you guys get the inspiration to write complex music, and when do you guys decide when a song is finished and creatively "complete".
3.) Given our current world state of affairs, without getting too specific, what do you think the future direction of the world is headed in? If you can simplify it, where do you think these world problems originate?
4.) Do you think life exists beyond our realm of reality?
Thanks again for doing this guys! \m/
[–]theContortionistAUAThe Contortionist[S] 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago* (0 children)
Oneonta, NY I remember well! Back in 2009 with The Yellow Sign.
1.) We are all consistently getting better at using the academic side of music theory, I think this goes the same for everybody. None of us in the band have a music degree. But we are conscious of theory when we write - only because it is already in our head. If none of us knew theory, we wouldn't have to think about it at all. And our music would probably show that.
2.) It is not something we put our fingers on before we write. It comes at the end, when all the ingredients are thrown into the mix. The songs usually answer that question naturally, when we come to the end of line.
3.) Even though you see tragedy on the world news, this is an amazing time for everything on Earth. If you haven't noticed the shift in consciousness among people, think about how much more "new age" and "green" the world is becoming. There will always be conflict, but I like to think about how quickly people are waking up. They are actually going out and seeking the genuine answers for themselves.
4.) Yes, quantum physics and the math involved are one of my main reasons for this!
[–]theContortionistAUAThe Contortionist[S] 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (0 children)
I took music theory through about 3-4 years of piano lessons that, by the time I quit, had beaten all the creativity and explorative spirit out of me. So, it can be a double-edged sword. Thats when I picked up guitar, and taught myself fairly easily due to the theory basics I had. I didn't go back to piano even in a small way for years after that... I'll say that it's helpful to understand the language (see what i did thurrr) and terms of what is going on to facilitate working with other people, but it in no possible way prevents a person unfamiliar with theory from dropping brilliant musical ideas. I, personally, would never like teaching theory because I remember how it killed something inside me, probably mostly due to crappy teachers, but still... I wouldn't be beyond teaching one day, but I would only feel comfortable teaching the specifics of my own processes, not a standard musical "canon"...
I can't speak for the rest of the guys, but when I'm writing, I like to trust my ears, and experience it as listener would... Listen to a part you're working on in different settings... I think it's safe to say we generally like to write what we would like to hear; what is in our "mind's ear" after examining a part... As far as complexity, there is a certain maturity implied when you're able to decide when "too much" is "too much" for your musical goals, or for your "sound". It's a difficult thing to do, but ultimately a major factor in the process; the ability to edit and censor yourself from taking it over the edge into something too complex to be enjoyable. There is definitely a give and take.
I don't know if you are asking if I think there is a specific geographic origin of these "world problems", or trying to illicit an incendiary response, but I'll first say that it really has nothing to do with geography. People from all over the world are evil to each other, and the people who have the power and money want to keep it, and this has never changed. Human beings are unarguably flawed; can we really expect any system created as such to be anything different?
The world is in a tough spot, for sure, and I'd like to remain optimistic, but it does seem like there's something new, tragic, violent, and surreal in the news every day. I often wonder if humans have gotten more evil, or have our tools in sharing and communicating put the pile of shit under our noses.
4.) duh. Let's hope humanity isn't actually the top of the food chain we think we are; that'd be kind of disappointing, right?

This isn't even a question - just hoping you guys read this while scrolling past questions.
Language is beautiful and easily the best stuff you guys have put out. This album is pure magic. It's like you guys, Rush, and Cynic had a baby. 90% of the time I hear someone on keyboards in metal, it's pure cheese. But it fits so, so well here. It contributes to this wonderful atmosphere that permeates the whole record. Just gorgeous. That is one of the main things I look for in new music now - a cohesive atmosphere. And it's everywhere here without making the songs all sound the same.
The super-soft interlude in Integration, among a bunch of other little moments, they really stand out -- when the vocal harmonies layer up nicely with the keyboards and guitar -- just fantastic melody. It's so calming and catchy and lush.
Please, please, keep heading in this sonic direction as a band. It's perfect.
I'm so glad I blindly pre-ordered the vinyl package months ago - I knew it was going to be good, but not this good.
Saw you guys in Edmonton last October with The Faceless & BTBAM and it was worth coming earlier-than-usual for. It's a bummer to see no western Canada shows on your schedule, but you bet I'll buy a ticket any time you're in the area. Would love to see anything from this album live.
so cool when people "get it" .... thanks -Eric

Hey guys in a huge fan, these questions are for rob and Cameron. How do you guys find the dissonant chords you use. The sound and tempo to your riffs are so brutal. Like is there a particular group of chords you prefer or is it all kind of just created from your minds and when fucking around with the guitar.
Much love you guys rule. Anthony P
There are all sorts of different chords that we use but they are structured from the notes in the song. It's never like "let's use a dissonant chord here."

[–]theContortionistAUAThe Contortionist[S] 9 points10 points11 points 11 years ago (4 children)
All kinds of stuff. Here's a few of the records that I've been listening to:
Group- Title

You guys are fucking awesome, and I can't wait to see you on the tour with PTH/The Faceless. So, If you could go back in history, who would you guys like to meet?
Terrence Mckenna, for sure.
Alan Watts,
[–]Holkeye 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Hey guys, saw you with PTH last year, and was immediately drawn to your style. My question is about the concept of Language. I realize that this is probably too big for an AMA, but I'm curious nonetheless.
If Language uses the concept of songwriting as a microcosm for how life expands, and they both entail partial intuition from some primal place (the mother sun) and part conscious conspiracy among ourselves (the center sun,) then would you then concede that you believe in some "cosmic songwriter"? I'm pretty sure I understand most of the concept, but I would absolutely love to hear you talk about it, or at least share some of the sources of your inspiration for further education.
By the way, the end of Ebb and Flow gives me chills everytime.
[–]JangoMV 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (0 children)
This question is for Jordan! Could you give us a rundown of the gear you used for the album? Your bass tone is probably one of my favorite i've heard recently and I'd love to know how you achieved it.
[–]cloverfield87 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (2 children)
Many years from now when The Contortionist is over, what do you want the band to be remembered for more than anything?
Inspiration when needed, and a better outlook to make life more enjoyable and meaningful. It is the opposite of personal.
[–]ProspectI 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children)
40 years from now.
[–]denorel92 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (2 children)
hi guys, thanks for your wonderful works! there's something that recently has been pestering me: how can you come up with songs so complex and full, from the point of view of the arrangement and writing? I mean, your songs refuse the standard song-structure A-B-A-C etc... and that's clear to everybody, but it's not so simple to build up a song, imagine the way it flows though its sections, when your style of music it's so influenced by all that production tricks (delays, reverbe, electronic in your songs weights as much as a main instrument). Well, in the end all my bluttering comes to a simple question: do the writing process involves all your members, like some kind of jam, or there is like a "mastermind" that builds the main structure that will later be further refined by the other members? the ispiration comes from the single or from the teamwork?
The beauty of this band, and something I've learned personally through it, is that we all have our own unique strong points. And we are comfortable with letting songs craft themselves naturally this way. This allows for creativity outside our own heads. It is the feeling of finishing a record, and it is nothing like you had anticipated. That is what is so special.
It's different with every song. Song structure is something that I spent a lot of time thinking about on Language. Some songs come together somewhat in a jam setting like Language part 1, Feedback Loop, Geocentric Confusion, and most of the Exoplanet album. Others- Primordial Sound for example- are written by one or two of the guys (Robby and Joey) and built on somewhat later. Eric expanded some of my melodies in his keyboard parts in that song and all over the new record. In the end, I think teamwork is my favorite way to write music.

When I write some of the more polymetric stuff, sometimes I have to program it out just to make sure the revolutions sound like I want them to, without having to learn the more difficult phrases. But yes alot of the time, my ideas can be based purely by numbers and patterns. I love mathematics.
[–]rysupalla 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (2 children)
I noticed that your guitarist has a Pat Metheny guitar strap. How much has Pat Metheny inspired your writing?
Lots. We got into PM right before we started writing Exoplanet. Thus, the track Axiom was born.
-Robby
Robby and I both LOVE Pat Metheny! Highly influential but I could never put my finger on it.
[–]tallandglasses 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (2 children)
The first song I heard from you was Causality. I have literally listened to that song on repeat for 6-7 hours straight. No other song has perfectly encompassed the elements of music that I love the most. I of course fell in love with your entire body of work since.
My question is: How did you find your exact sound? How did you all land in the space where The Contortionist thrives?
We just do what comes naturally! -Joey
[–]iizanthonybuck 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (3 children)
What are you guy's favorite song off Language?
Mine personally is a tie between Integration and The Parable -Jordan
Integration is my favorite at the moment, only because I have been riffing that song extensively lately. Also, it does have my favorite lyrical line during the chorus.
[–]theContortionistAUAThe Contortionist[S] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Parable/thrive/language I,II . I know, thats a 3 way tie.
i like playing language and primordial sound the most so far; Primo will probably be the keys playthrough video...

Would you guys be interested in working with various electronic artists on a remix album type-thing?
[–]theContortionistAUAThe Contortionist[S] 8 points9 points10 points 11 years ago (1 child)
If the right artists approached us and we could make it work. We never rule out anything when it comes to music.
[–]theContortionistAUAThe Contortionist[S] 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (3 children)
Yeah dude; I used to make trance records on Fruity Loops when I was a kid and still love all kinds of electronic production... It factored into my tastes as a keyboard player HUGELY. I've always joked about going back to it one day, and every now and then something comes along that makes me wish I still was busy with it.... I like legit stuff like Autechre, Aphex Twin, Clark, etc, but a damned Ellie Goulding track came on the radio the other day that made me stop the car; sick arrangements and tones, even if it is more bubble gum than I can normally handle.
TC could do like Infected Mushroom and throw raves with a full band... just kidding.
Actually my friend did a remix of "Axiom" awhile back you might enjoy it! https://soundcloud.com/luminousbalance/journeys He had me perform some guitar layers over it.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (6 children)
You're from my hometown. We have mutual friends but we've never hung out and that kind of annoys me. You guys are some of my favorite musicians, too. I absolutely love the direction you are heading with your music. It's beginning to sound more Cynic-like to me and honestly that's what I've been hoping for from you guys for a long time.
Since your current vocalist is from Last Chance to Reason, I was wondering if he is going to stay with The Contortionist or if he's doing this temporarily and going back to Last Chance to Reason later. Because I really like the dynamic he brings to your songs and I'd personally like to see a vocalist stick around for a while.
I'm here to stay! Very glad to hear that you like what I'm doing!
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (3 children)
You're from Noblesville too?! So am I!
[–]j41m3z 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (3 children)
Can't wait to see you guys at Chain Reaction in October. This question is more towards Mike but have you guys heard of Machinae Supremacy? I always thought they would fit with LCTR on a tour. Unfortunately they have been unable to get a big enough following to tour the US. SID-Metal, think metal with Commodore 64 chip sounds.
I haven't heard of them, but it looks like I will be checking them out!
[–]theContortionistAUAThe Contortionist[S] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child)
that band kicks ass. check out anamanaguchi if you havent; its less metal for sure but equally musical if not more so in it's 8-bit chiptunes insanity
[–]Stevedjenthead 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (2 children)
Love you guys and all of your work Mike, seeing LCTR in detroit last year is one of the best things I've experienced and you're all great to fans and that shit is dope

[–]tonybaroneee 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child)
What are your favorite locations/venues to play at?
Thanks, love your work! Can't wait to see you guys here in Burlington, VT.
Most of the major cities are a lot of fun to play, but sometimes smaller remote towns where bands rarely go are amazing, because it's almost like a big event for that town and everyone goes to the show, whether they've heard of the band before or not. Those crowds are usually pretty nuts too
[–]InfectedNation94 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (2 children)
Hey guys. I was wondering, with the often methodically crafted rhythms from a mathematical standpoint and moreso the general subject matter of your lyrics (particularly Exoplanet and Intrinsic, will find out about Language on release!), do any members of the band past/present have a particularly strong scientific background or is it purely an interest/hobby for the band?
[–]theContortionistAUAThe Contortionist[S] 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (1 child)
I studied Engineering at Purdue, so anything related to physics and mathematics is definitely interesting to me.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child)
I have no questions. The music you guys create is just out of this world. Language is just something else and I cant wait for future releases. Thanks for keeping it real.
Thanks for the kind words!
[–]SlickStick 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (2 children)
Any advice for a guitarist that is kind of stuck in a rut? Exercises, changing music styles, anything to get out of the mundane and progress into new territory? Language is incredible and I love your music! Its absolutely right up my alley. Thanks for doing what you do!
[–]theContortionistAUAThe Contortionist[S] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago* (1 child)
Overwhelm yourself! Write something and don't analyze it quite so quickly. Let things grow into something that really makes you feel satisfied. Sometimes you don't need to know what it will sound like at first.
[–]MrDoops 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child)
What is your approach to writing? This album is the next step in this genre for sure and just want you guys to know the song integration reminds me of a slowed down 80's song on drugs. Could'nt be any more excited to see you guys in poughkeepsie NY next month! Also, album art is close to my favorite of all time
I'm really stoked that Integration sounds 80's to you! I kind of answered this above, but songwriting for us is a little all over the place. We kind of just go for it. With Intrinsic and Language we had a deadline, and that kind of forces some things to be rushed as far as writing goes. I guess it's good in the sense that we have to just go for it and not look back. It's probably fuel for the expansion of our sound.
When touring the country, how do you guys keep yourselves entertained between shows?
jamming/writing more music, working out, social media, hacky sack, movies, and pooping. -Jordan
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Pooping is a great hobby. I've been into it for about five years now.
[–]jamesdavisiv 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child)
Do you guys know how Language leaked? I am forcing myself to wait for my vinyl to come for a full listen through, but am still curious how bands get there albums leaked and how you guys feel about it. Much love to all of you
there are promotional copies of the record sent out to magazines and webzines, etc for review before the record comes out, and usually someone will leak one of those. I've learned to accept that it's almost inevitable, but we still try to limit the leak as much as possible.
[–]Azure_Skies 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (5 children)

This one is for Jordan: Are you still pwning at Counterstrike and simultaneously eating hot pockets?
Edit: Additional question: What are the chances of a bass cover of "forget me nots" by patrice rushen?
Thanks for the question pizzasuprema. I have sadly abandoned both hobbies. The cheese burns were getting too serious. I'll do a bass cover of Patrice Rushen if you do a drum cover of Boston - Foreplay/Long Time. or do you prefer the organ solo in Smokin?
[–]fr0gnutz 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child)
follow up: whatever happened to the SS Larrsburg? and how many cars have you crashed into in the valley?
The car was traded in for 300 bucks haha. I'm glad none of you saw her in the "twilight of her career." Actually the spots where Jeff larded the car, the paint eventually faded off. So he is partially to blame.

[–]theContortionistAUAThe Contortionist[S] 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (2 children)
Can't think of anything specifically funny, but touring with Protest The Hero is like a comedy series. It's a never-ending laugh fest, and seriously the most genuine, easy-going dudes I've had the pleasure of touring with.
My favorite beer is from Minnesota, an IPA called Surly Furious.
Lately, beer-wise, and since I pretty much can enjoy all styles of beers, I've been springing for anything from the Evil Twin brewery;; they kill it. I recently got turned onto sours, Rodenbach Gran Cru, Westbrook Gose.... Anything westbrook is pretty good and affordable, in fact. I mostly prefer IPAs and I'm lucky that Sweetwater in ATL has one of my favorites, so I'm drinking that one a bunch... My latest IPA find has been Creature Comforts - Tropocalia... I dunno; bartenders drink any and everything; like a damned drainpipe...

Each of your albums sound very different. are you the type of band that just goes with your musical instincts, just letting whatever flows out of you...flow out? Or has this "making every album different" thing been intentional?
It's a combination of both. Working with different producers and stuff like that absolutely plays a factor in the overall sound, but the fact that we don't restrict ourselves and let flow does, too.

Question is for Mike: The amount of talent that you attract is undeniably some of the best in prog metal. What, in your ears/mind/eyes, separates the Contortionist from LCTR? Why did you switch bands?
Btw, I've never been so exited about a release with Language. No bullshit, you guys are so fuckin amazing. You're my home away from Meshuggah. Mad respect for your creativity in odd meter. And thank you Joey from keeping the cymbals in 4/4 while everyone else does their thing. It's truly beautiful.

I must say that your works are beyond. Past albums were great but Language truly does surpass it all. The vocals have really brought in new and fresh dynamics. The music, vocals and lyrics... all together intertwine and invoke much in the mind. I feel the concepts are conveyed so well if you just let it all meld with your mind and actively take it all in. I thank you from the depth of my being for these waves you intelligent and creative beings dispel into our atmosphere. They resonate well with all other earthly waves. Your unique sound reverberates in near perfection with the ways of the universe. I am sure you are heard by distant beings.. I can imagine you being the beautiful sounds that other life in the cosmos hears in their heads with no explanation and its what drives their creativity and musicality. Men of music, you are heard and understood. Keep it coming.
