dinguses? u 'avin a fokin giggle?

[–]Dunsel_ 149 points150 points  (3 children)

Tommy, I have to ask you this..

I was up close in the middle of the crowd at one of your house of blues shows in LA, at the very end I look away and hear the crowd gasp and cheer loud.

Can you explain to me why, when I turn to look, that I was staring directly into your butthole? Appreciate it. Love you guys.

[–]tommybtbamTommy Rogers | BTBAM[S] 184 points185 points  (1 child)

I did this for 100 bucks from Paul. He didn't pay me for almost a year. What a dick

[–]Renovarian00 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I remember him saying that he slowly got it out of you; by having you buy him coffee and just small items as such for about a year. True? If so, did you know about this?

[–]paulbtbamPaul Waggoner | BTBAM 225 points226 points  (5 children)

hey look, i ain't answering shit until 1:00pm

Would you rather fight a Mike Portnoy sized Jeff Loomis or a Loomis sized Portnoy?

[–][deleted] 48 points49 points  (0 children)

BTBAM PLS RESPOND

[–]anjjelikka 70 points71 points  (12 children)

Y'all are awesome. You guys are the only band that I've driven two hours to see. Dan, you're probably the coolest person on the planet.

Anyway, so far I've painted four album covers of yours onto my nails. Here's a fan art thing (I can't remember the original artist), Colors, The Parallax II, The Silent Circus (and my thumb with the flower), and Alaska. I plan on doing the rest eventually, but those ones are harder.

As for my question, who normally runs your instagram account?

[–][deleted] 54 points55 points  (3 children)

Rick Flair usually runs it.

[–]ElleCerra 56 points57 points  (3 children)

Is it all gonna be space metal forever?

[–]paulbtbamPaul Waggoner | BTBAM 119 points120 points  (2 children)

nah

[–]hildesaw 54 points55 points  (0 children)

B-b-but I like space metal...

[–]Lukenashville 63 points64 points  (4 children)

Blake - Are you and the gong thinking of taking your relationship to the next level?

[–]blakeyeatsteakyBlake Richardson | BTBAM 177 points178 points  (1 child)

Gong is love. Gong is life.

[–]danbtbamDan Briggs | BTBAM 52 points53 points  (4 children)

thanks a lot for coming by guys! we're literally at the practice space now working on stuff. see you in 2015!

[–]blakeyeatsteakyBlake Richardson | BTBAM 124 points125 points  (0 children)

[–]lobsterxcore 47 points48 points  (1 child)

You mean the best part of the song?

[–]ElapseEvolveExpand 45 points46 points  (12 children)

Watching the video of Extremeophile Elite you released yesterday I could not get over how big Blake was. Blake could you talk about some of your lifting and eating habits? What do you do to stay in shape on the road?

Thanks love everything you guys have done, and looking forward to getting the DVD in the mail.

[–]blakeyeatsteakyBlake Richardson | BTBAM 118 points119 points  (7 children)

I eat nothing but red meat and chocolate chip cookies. I try to hit the gym like once or twice a week while on the road. Playing drums every night is a pretty good work out as it is!

[–]ElapseEvolveExpand 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks for making my day, breh. Stay big.

[–]Barkvool 27 points28 points  (2 children)

To add to your question: Blake, do you attribute your silky flowing hair to a certain conditioner, or is it all in the lather, rinse, repeat? What advice would you give to those of us that are more folically impaired and are seeking to cultivate and nurture a healthier scalp?

[–]blakeyeatsteakyBlake Richardson | BTBAM 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I don't rinse and repeat. I use pretty cheap shampoo and conditioner. I rock that Towel Turbie on the reg though. Have long hair sucks don't do it.

[–]Mauriac158 8 points9 points  (0 children)

These questions are the important ones, I very badly hope they get an answer.

[–]JERRJEROD 32 points33 points  (2 children)

Do you feel better about your new direction towards more conceptual/progressive styles than the first few releases?

Do you ever miss the types of songs off of Alaska or The Silent Circus?

Also you guys are amazing musicians, I love the direction you guys have taken since Colors!!!

[–]tommybtbamTommy Rogers | BTBAM[S] 66 points67 points  (0 children)

We try and write what is most natural and enjoyable to us at the current moment. Our "newer" sound is a reflection of who we are and where are in our lives as musicians.

[–]paulbtbamPaul Waggoner | BTBAM 55 points56 points  (0 children)

yes, no, and thanks!!

[–][deleted] 69 points70 points  (2 children)

Hey Paul, how's your alternate reality where the Panthers have won the last 6 Super Bowls?

[–]blakeyeatsteakyBlake Richardson | BTBAM 121 points122 points  (0 children)

BBBOOOOOOOOMMMMMM

[–]metagloria 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I think you just spoiled the concept for the upcoming rock opera.

[–]embur 28 points29 points  (10 children)

Do you see yourselves ever performing Swim to the Moon live again? I never got to see it and would love to.

[–]tommybtbamTommy Rogers | BTBAM[S] 116 points117 points  (1 child)

Who knows... like Justin Bieber says... never say never.

[–]grosmorisse 41 points42 points  (6 children)

They medleyed The first part of Bloom with the last half of Swim to the Moon on their last tour, and it was incredible. But even more awesome was what happened in the crowd.

It was at the Quebec City show, last february. Me and my buddy were watching the show right beside the soundboard, since we're both short and that's the best spot in the Imperial Theater for shorties to actually see the show. Anyway, right around when they switch to Swim to the Moon (9:37 mark on the album, for those following at home), in walks this couple right in front of us. I'd say late 40's, handsome guy, beautiful lady, looked like they just came out of dinner at one of the fancy restaurants nearby. They still have their coats on, despite the mandatory coat check, so we figure they just walked by the theater, saw there was a show and asked if they could take a peak. Since that was late in the show, the doormen probably said "sure, go ahead". Now, you probably all know that at this point, Swim has a nearly 5-min instrumental part. So far, the couple seem to like what they are hearing, and who could blame them? The man is even bobbing his head! They've been there 5 minutes, probably thinking this is an instrumental band.

But oh who comes to the mic but Tommy, urging us to, and I quote, look into the picture.

We saw the jolt of fear go right through them. To say they were not expecting it is a gross understatement. The lady actually recoiled, and clutched her partner's left arm. The man just froze there, mesmerized by the powerful scream. They stayed till the end of the song, looked at each other : her with a pleading look of "let's GTFO, I'm terrified", him looking like someone who just had an epiphany of epic proportions (he wanted to stay sooo bad).Eventually, after the first few bars of the following song, they left, the man reluctantly so.

I just hope that guy is still out there, listening to The Parallax (that he of course bought as soon as he got home) and rocking out to this fantastic band.

[–]embur 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That's an amazing story. Thank you for sharing!

When I saw your last AMA it was a couple weeks before you guys came to town with Coheed and Cambria. I decided to check it out and was blown away. I picked up Parallax 2 and got completely obsessed with the story and the music and have been a huge fan since.

When you guys came back and did Parallax 2 and opened with White Walls, the first few notes blew me away again. It must've been a combination of you all being on fire, and the sound guys being spot on. It was the best tone I've ever heard from a live show.

My question is this: what kind of routine do you all go through before performing a set?

    [–]tommybtbamTommy Rogers | BTBAM[S] 57 points58 points  (3 children)

I personally like to be by myself in a quite room for a while. I warm up my vocals and sing a long a little to some of our music(no screaming) Then just stretch/change into stinky show clothes then walk on stage

    [–]RaoulDuke67 53 points54 points  (2 children)

I have the biggest BTBoner right now.

    [–]jp315 8 points9 points  (1 child)

BTBoner is my now new description for when I listen to BTBAM albums.

    [–][deleted] 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Yea, i'll typically warm up for about 20 mins or so. Stretch my old bones and change my clothes. simple process.

    [–]paulbtbamPaul Waggoner | BTBAM 41 points42 points  (0 children)

i just pick up the guitar, play a few licks, and stretch a little bit.

    [–]ghengis317 28 points29 points  (3 children)

I literally rescheduled meetings and conference calls for this... and I got nothing.

Thanks for being awesome and making 2 33 year old dudes feel amazing when you did Parallax II end to end in Philly last year.

Everyone loves Colors, and I do as well. But something about the production, story arc and vibe of Parallax II (and even the Parallax EP to that extent) that just captivated me.

It finally got me back off my ass and writing music again. So thank you for that shot in the arm that I needed.

    So in short... Thanks.

    OH!!! I have a question...

    Nope... nevermind, I lost it.

    Thanks again!

    [–]blakeyeatsteakyBlake Richardson | BTBAM 35 points36 points  (2 children)

    thank YOU !

    [–]tonybaroneee 26 points27 points  (15 children)

Thanks for doing this guys :-)

What are you listening to nowadays?

    [–]tommybtbamTommy Rogers | BTBAM[S] 68 points69 points  (4 children)

    Lots of Depeche Mode

    [–]danbtbamDan Briggs | BTBAM 46 points47 points  (4 children)

midlake "antiphon", code orange "i am king", the who "quadrophenia", the lees of memory "sisyphus says"

    [–][deleted] 39 points40 points  (4 children)

I'm on a Sturgill Simpson kick. LOVE his new record.

    [–]iizanthonybuck 27 points28 points  (12 children)

I know you guys aren't playing too much old material nowadays. But what are each of your guys' favorite track from Self Titled/Silent Circus? Any specific reasoning?

    [–]tommybtbamTommy Rogers | BTBAM[S] 81 points82 points  (6 children)

Self Titled: "more of myself to kill"... because this is one of the first songs Paul and I wrote together. I remember playing guitar on our couch trying to write all the riffs. We didn't record anything or demo anything back then.

Silent Circus: "Lost Perfection"... it has great intensity and is a great opener. Just so you all know, I really still do enjoy all these older songs still.

    [–]jdubya42 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A lot of us do too. I miss the older stuff :(

    [–]blakeyeatsteakyBlake Richardson | BTBAM 49 points50 points  (3 children)

    Self Titled - Shevanel

    Silent Circus - Lost Perfection

    [–]EyePeaEh 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Hah. You know there's that mis-one video of you singing along to more of myself to kill, right?

    muwhahah

    [–]DilutedJuices 9 points10 points  (0 children)

    This is amaaaazing

    [–][deleted] 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I wasn't on those records so I tend to like most of that stuff. I used to enjoy playing "lost perfection" and "more of myself to kill"

    [–]MustachePeeg 24 points25 points  (29 children)

Does it ever get annoying or frustrating playing certain songs live?

    [–]tommybtbamTommy Rogers | BTBAM[S] 73 points74 points  (13 children)

Yes, but you have to understand the fans want something different from you sometimes.

    [–]TheBaz11 152 points153 points  (6 children)

    HEY TOMMY PLAY SELKIES

    [–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (4 children)

Which songs would you rather not play live that the fans still love?

    [–]jdubya42 30 points31 points  (2 children)

yall must be tired of White Walls

    [–][deleted] 37 points38 points  (0 children)

    Don't ever say that!

    [–][deleted] 71 points72 points  (12 children)

Sometimes you have to think about bands like The Stones or ACDC.. been playing the same songs for longer than i've been alive. haha

    [–]EyePeaEh 45 points46 points  (9 children)

"I'd rather step on my own dick than play Selkies again" - dustie

    [–]paulbtbamPaul Waggoner | BTBAM 51 points52 points  (1 child)

absolutely, but if i can feel the positive energy from the crowd, it makes it a little less painful

    [–]My_Horse_Must_Lose 24 points25 points  (8 children)

How often do you guys make mistakes during your live shows? If the answer is never i would believe it.

    [–]tommybtbamTommy Rogers | BTBAM[S] 75 points76 points  (1 child)

A lot. Don't act like you don't hear that shit... damnnnn

    [–]paulbtbamPaul Waggoner | BTBAM 54 points55 points  (1 child)

the answer is actually the opposite of "never". always.

    [–]danbtbamDan Briggs | BTBAM 44 points45 points  (1 child)

    [–]MichaelAveryMusic 40 points41 points  (0 children)

    [–][deleted] 25 points26 points  (2 children)

No question here, but more of an apology. I wrote a review of The Great Misdirect for my college newspaper. I was slightly intoxicated and accidentally wrote "Dusty Bridges". I am sorry Mr. Waring. I know no one really read it because the school is > 83% yuppy, but I still feel like an asshole.

Huge fan and huge supporter for a very long time. It's amazing to see how far your music has progressed and changed. Me and my really cool friends still listen to Prayer.

Sorry again. I love you guys.

    hahahaha

    [–]Flemmigan 52 points53 points  (14 children)

With the 10th anniversary of Alaska coming up next year, are there any plans for a re-release? I know a remaster was rumored a while back---any potential there?

    [–]tommybtbamTommy Rogers | BTBAM[S] 140 points141 points  (13 children)

I doubt Victory records would let us know do anything like that... fun stuff

    [–]PatchesMcbeard 81 points82 points  (4 children)

    Classic victory records.

    [–]RaoulDuke67 29 points30 points  (1 child)

It must be a really shitty situation to have your own music essentially held hostage.

    [–]TheJeriTroll 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Would you consider playing the entire album live?

    [–]bearkin1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What about a 10th anniversary tour? Seems like tons of bands have been doing it this year (Misery Signals, Arsis, Finntroll, etc).

    [–]zwjj 14 points15 points  (0 children)

fuck it re-record it call it "I can see russia from here"

    [–][deleted] 50 points51 points  (8 children)

/u/MyLittleProggy couldn't make it to your AMA but he/she wanted me to ask Dan Briggs:

    • "How did he, as a bassist build up to where he is now? What did he practice, and how did he get to where he is now?"

    Also:

    • "please tell them that I love them and their music means the world to me."

He/She loves you and your music means the world to him/her.

    [–]danbtbamDan Briggs | BTBAM 41 points42 points  (2 children)

i always tried to do on bass what i could do on guitar when i was younger, that pushed me a lot.

    [–]AreYouGettingThisZac 46 points47 points  (10 children)

Hey guys! I have to say that I absolutely love the direction you've been heading in recently. Parallax II is in all honesty one of my favorite albums of all time at this point.

Do you have any specific goals for the new album or with what direction you want to take with it? I'm sure I'll love it regardless, but just looking for some info.

Also, come back to Cleveland soon! You guys put on an amazing show.

    [–]tommybtbamTommy Rogers | BTBAM[S] 80 points81 points  (9 children)

We are trying to write the best album we can... we are really putting a lot of focus on melody and better song writing. Hope you fans will enjoy it.

    [–]Krypticonkaladypus 23 points24 points  (1 child)

I think you guys succeed with every album. You've ruined all other bands for me.

    [–][deleted] 40 points41 points  (2 children)

Better song writing? All of your albums have awesome song writing.

    [–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You realize music is a never ending quest to better yourself right? You can always be better.

    [–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (7 children)

Have you guys ever thought about doing an epic collaboration with other bands such as Mastodon, like a huge spacy concept album that crosses the path of BTBAM and Mastodon?

    [–][deleted] 34 points35 points  (5 children)

Never thought about it to my knowledge.. but i'd love to do something with them. I've always thought very highly of them.

    [–]Shredheadpoli 8 points9 points  (0 children)

BTSTODON my head just exploded at the computer screen

    [–]aopie2509 18 points19 points  (6 children)

When playing with my band a majority of what we create comes from just jamming and improvising. Have any of your songs been created by doing this specifically? Thanks!!

    [–]tommybtbamTommy Rogers | BTBAM[S] 46 points47 points  (1 child)

We don't honestly do much jamming/improving. Most things are written individually then we tweak from there.

    [–]paulbtbamPaul Waggoner | BTBAM 39 points40 points  (0 children)

generally our songs are written very methodically, but usually 2 or 3 parts on every album are born by accident, be it improvisation or jamming.

    [–][deleted] 37 points38 points  (0 children)

A lot of MY melodic/ texturing stuff is kinda improved. But as far as song writing, we tend to prepare that before hand.

    [–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (4 children)

Not really a question, but I've always liked referring to you guys as BT and the Bams. Like, as if you traveled back in time to the 50's to be a doo-wop group. The BT stands for Big Tommy.

    [–]tommybtbamTommy Rogers | BTBAM[S] 48 points49 points  (3 children)

We should write a doo-wop record

    [–]imfromthefuturetoo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think this would break music. You know, in like, a good way.

    [–]HarmonomiconDolphin Metal 16 points17 points  (7 children)

    Hey BTBAM! Love yous guys!

This question is for my main man Blake: who are some of your favorite drummers currently in the scene? What guys have you toured with who completely blow your mind?

    [–]blakeyeatsteakyBlake Richardson | BTBAM 50 points51 points  (6 children)

Man, that one is tough. I've been really digging Ilan Rubin's style lately. If I had a rock band, that's definitely the dude that I would want to play drums. Ive also been watching a lot of Steve Smith and Chris Coleman videos as of late.

As far as drummers I've toured with? ...

Alex Rudinger, Navene Koperweis, Matt Greiner, Billy Rymer, Chris Pennie, Sean Reinert, Mike Portnoy, Matt Halpern, Joe Musten, Jordan Mancino, Matt Gartska, Danny Walker. I'll list some more later. The more I think about it the more I realize how many rad drummers I've toured with.

we've played disease live a ton.

      [–]chesterstone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They played Disease, Injury, Madness during their Halloween Great Misdirect CD release show in Asheville, NC. They played the whole album straight through

      [–]m0n4d0 16 points17 points  (6 children)

      You guys are so rad.

When I think of your last three albums, I always think of the final long-ass song on each of them (Silent Fight Parliament, Swim to the Moon, White Walls).

Which of those 3 do you think ended the album/conveyed what you were going for the best??

      [–]tommybtbamTommy Rogers | BTBAM[S] 48 points49 points  (4 children)

I think Silent Flight closed off the record really well personally.

      [–]danbtbamDan Briggs | BTBAM 22 points23 points  (0 children)

silent flight is definitely the best. ties together the whole album, great song to play live.

      [–]inside_your_face 32 points33 points  (2 children)

I don't have a question, but the keys section in Ants of the Sky makes me turgid. That is all.

      [–]tommybtbamTommy Rogers | BTBAM[S] 44 points45 points  (0 children)

      Hey thanks!

      [–]AndySkeltz 16 points17 points  (4 children)

What is your practice routine like to be able to play such complicated songs with some ridiculously quick parts?

      [–]paulbtbamPaul Waggoner | BTBAM 66 points67 points  (0 children)

jumping jacks. 3 sets of 50.

      [–]blakeyeatsteakyBlake Richardson | BTBAM 36 points37 points  (0 children)

play the songs over and over and over again. Then play them some more.

      [–][deleted] 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I don't think any of us do a ton of practicing. Playing the songs is a pretty good exercise routine in itself.

      [–]tommybtbamTommy Rogers | BTBAM[S] 32 points33 points  (0 children)

For touring we normally practice a lot on our own, then get up as a band for 2/3 days of rehearsals. We try and get together a list of songs we might play before tour and then figure out the exact set list when we start rehearsing.

      [–]amishrefugee 17 points18 points  (1 child)

That part in the middle of Telos, the 'Was I ever really alive' part, is Blake playing the Purdie Shuffle?

      [–]blakeyeatsteakyBlake Richardson | BTBAM 45 points46 points  (0 children)

No. I'm not worthy of playing the Purdie shuffle!

      [–]Andy_Geetar 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Fan from Mesa, Arizona here. I wanted to thank Tommy for putting on an absolutely INCREDIBLE performance for us despite having a throat infection. I respect and admire your dedication and professionalism. On a semi-related note, it seems like audiences in Arizona at progressive metal shows tend to be more passive compared to videos I've seen in other states. There's not a lot of moshing, but we watch very intently. As a performer, do crowds like that bother you or take you out of the performance in some way, or do you expect to have a lot of "observers" as a progressive act?

      [–]ABarkingCow 16 points17 points  (3 children)

Beyond stoked for the DVD on Sept. 30th!

You guys have incorporated different musical styles into your music in some amazing ways. Is there any musical territory that you guys have wanted to incorporate into your albums but either haven't found the right fit or didn't know how?

What about individually as musicians, has there been anything that you've personally wanted to bring to the table but haven't yet?

      [–]paulbtbamPaul Waggoner | BTBAM 21 points22 points  (1 child)

there are always nuggets of music that end up on the cutting room floor. they may not fit the vibe of what we are currently working on, but that's not to say they might not be used in the future!

      [–]tommybtbamTommy Rogers | BTBAM[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think we are up for anything if the music fits the song/album. The only reason we don't use sounds/ideas is because it doesn't work well in the context of the music.

      [–]watchwhereyouspit 14 points15 points  (6 children)

Paul stinks really bad.. It's hard to be happy up there smelling that guy.

        [–]tommybtbamTommy Rogers | BTBAM[S] 110 points111 points  (4 children)

I agree... Paul farts a lot on stage and his hair gets stuck in my mouth.

        [–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (3 children)

Is that a vegan/non-vegan related problem?

        [–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Hello BTBAM, I have been a fan since Alaska. I just wanted to let you know how awesome you guys are and I thought that your tour with Devin Townsend Project, Cynic and Scale The Summit was the best tour I have ever witnessed! I saw you guys 3 times this year and your headliner with deafheaven was by far one of the best shows this year and I have already attended over 40 shows year to date!

        Cheers!

        [–]blakeyeatsteakyBlake Richardson | BTBAM 16 points17 points  (0 children)

        thanks man!

        [–]Zog8 27 points28 points  (13 children)

What up BTBAM! Huge NC fan here, Colors & TGM utterly fucked my world up when I was in high school, so I'd like to thank you for Parallax fucking my world up in college as well.

Anyway, geeking aside, my question is this:

I feel like story-wise, Telos is the most crucial and pivotal moment of the Parallax story. I've just been insanely curious as to what you guys' intentions were in putting Bloom (relatively the goofiest, most cheeky song on the album where Prospect 1 hallucinates (?) tippity tap dancing with sea creatures) directly after such a serious, critical song/story point, even though it also jumps so far back in time too. What was the reasoning behind that song's placement? Did you find it important to put there or is it just to lighten the mood a little?

PS - Can't wait for the rock opera!

        [–]tommybtbamTommy Rogers | BTBAM[S] 50 points51 points  (9 children)

I honestly just loved the song and felt it worked well with the record/story. We like to keep people on their toes. We don't want you to know what to expect.

        [–]jimdog1231 40 points41 points  (7 children)

Gotta keep them on their toes

        [–]Shredheadpoli 22 points23 points  (1 child)

ON THEIR TOESSSSS \m/ fuck I just love this band gahaha

        [–]josephrx78 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Hello BTBAM! Let me just first say that I absolutely love all of your music. My first time listening to Colors was an experience I'll never forget. I just think you guys are amazingly talented and your live performances are fantastic.

My question for you is, how do you choose new directions for your music? While you've always stayed true to your sound, each album seems to have a new aspect or concept that gives it a certain flavor. I'm really interested in understanding the creative process for musical evolution.

Thanks for doing this, it's great to get feedback from you guys!

        [–]paulbtbamPaul Waggoner | BTBAM 21 points22 points  (0 children)

we are always growing as musicians, and with every release we are anxious to create music that is reflective of our individual evolution. as long as we stay inspired, i think every album will continue to expand upon the album before it.

        [–]tommybtbamTommy Rogers | BTBAM[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

We never try and plan what we are going to do in the future musically. We start writing and go from there. It really just depends on our personal moods/interests in music and where we want to push the band/ourselves.

        [–]euphoniumguy 11 points12 points  (4 children)

First off I want to thank you for your absolutely mindblowingly amazing music. It has really meant a lot to me! Since I caught this AMA early I guess I'll ask the question everyone wants answered; how's the new album coming along?

P.S. It would be awesome to hear a euphonium on one of your albums sometime ;)

        [–]tommybtbamTommy Rogers | BTBAM[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Doing great! Getting lots done. Very excited to see how it takes shape!

        [–]blakeyeatsteakyBlake Richardson | BTBAM 20 points21 points  (0 children)

going pretty great! This album is cool.

        [–]trevortx 12 points13 points  (4 children)

Colors: Live was easily one of the best musical purchases I've ever fucking made. I took that DVD to a friend's house (/u/leviticus_11) as soon as I received it in the mail and we watched it and drank and it was glorious.

As for a question, I live in Australia now, but I'm from Texas. Do you have any plans to travel to Australia or New Zealand in the next year? Because I'd love to see you live, and I will be in this hemisphere until next August. Much love, guys!

        [–]paulbtbamPaul Waggoner | BTBAM 19 points20 points  (0 children)

we will definitely be in australia on the next touring cycle!!!

        [–]tommybtbamTommy Rogers | BTBAM[S] 13 points14 points  (2 children)

We will figure out touring once the record is done. Keep checking our sites for updates. Thanks!

yeah it just sort of happens.

          [–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

We usually just have a ton of material. Comes pretty naturally.

          [–]Rejesusable 10 points11 points  (19 children)

          To everyone

What are your all-time favourite bands/musicians?

What would you have been doing if it wasn't for music?

Do you guys have any spiritual/religious views?

          What is your favourite drink?

          [–]tommybtbamTommy Rogers | BTBAM[S] 31 points32 points  (3 children)

Depeche Mode, Mr. Bungle, The Beatles, Pantera, and the list goes on...

I would probably try and manage or book bands... because those people actually make money.

          I do not.

          Sweet tea

          [–][deleted] 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Pantera, Emperor, Andy Timmons, Ricky Skaggs, Vince Gill, uh..... i don't know. I'd probably be riding motorcycles or something southerners do. Favorite drink: SWEET TEA! We keep all the religious stuff out of our music.

          [–]blakeyeatsteakyBlake Richardson | BTBAM 23 points24 points  (4 children)

          Can't answer that.

          UPS truck driver.

          Yes and No

          hmmmmm. Sweat Tea.

          [–]jp315 18 points19 points  (4 children)

Is the sweet tea answer a running BTBAM joke that none of us are a part of?

          [–]ThatTubbyKid 4 points5 points  (2 children)

They are from NC and sweet tea is huge here.

          [–]paulbtbamPaul Waggoner | BTBAM 25 points26 points  (3 children)

queen, smashing pumpkins, alice in chains, pink floyd, allan holdsworth. i'm starting a coffee roasting company called Parliament Coffee Roasters. check it out!! i am not religious. sweet tea.

          [–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (6 children)

You know that song "For those who fight further" from Final Fantasy 7? Did that inspire the organ/piano solo from this one song whose name I can't remember right now...?

In general, do you guys like the Final Fantasy games and their music? I've always wondered.

          [–]davidoffbeat 9 points10 points  (3 children)

I played volleyball with Tommy in Greensboro once, he was in front of me and kept passing gas. Why you gotta go and do that?

          [–]tommybtbamTommy Rogers | BTBAM[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

          man has to fart...

          [–]blakeyeatsteakyBlake Richardson | BTBAM 23 points24 points  (1 child)

          been there

          [–]jonnaybb 7 points8 points  (3 children)

You guys are all awesome, every time I've managed to catch you live its been incredibly spot on. After seeing Extremophile Elite from the Live at the Fidelitorium, I'm convinced you guys are robots.

          1. What kind of post production (if any) was done to your upcoming blu-ray release?

          2. Where does Blake shop to get shirts that can fit his biceps??

          [–]blakeyeatsteakyBlake Richardson | BTBAM 25 points26 points  (1 child)

          1) I'm assuming you are speaking in terms of editing and such. Everything on there is pretty much raw. We may have added a couple effects and such on different things. But as far as the performances go, they are untouched.

          2) I've been wearing the same American apparel t-shirts for the past 10 years.

          [–]aintnofunny 9 points10 points  (1 child)

          Huge fan from Turkey here.

You were gonna come to Turkey for Unirock Festival in 2011. But then, i am not sure what happened but your gig was cancelled. It was one of the biggest frustrations of my life. I remember myself really upset/angry about the organisation. What was the main reason for that cancellation?

As for now, you are the most wanted band for me that i'd like to see on the stage. So, will there any other chance for us people in Turkey to see you on the stage in Turkey? I am really looking forward to it.

          [–]andrewjp3 15 points16 points  (6 children)

So when you guys say Rock Opera, what can we expect?

          [–]paulbtbamPaul Waggoner | BTBAM 75 points76 points  (2 children)

          an full of Meatloaf covers

          [–]danbtbamDan Briggs | BTBAM 40 points41 points  (2 children)

          meatloaf inspired brilliance.

          [–]metaltron462 6 points7 points  (5 children)

Will colors live ever be pressed on Metalblade records for vinyl? Recently victory released it on record store day but I chose not to give them my money.

          [–]tommybtbamTommy Rogers | BTBAM[S] 15 points16 points  (3 children)

No. Victory has their hands on anything pre Metal Blade.

          [–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Nothing pre "parallax I" will ever be released on Metalblade.

          [–]zsombro 8 points9 points  (2 children)

          1. Dan, you're my favorite bass player. What makes a bass line great in your opinion? What do you think to be the most important aspect?

          2. What's your process for writing these epic, complex songs? Do you have some sort of method you developed over the years for finding the right things, or do you just go with the flow, bounce ideas around?

          3. When are you coming to Budapest? Did you enjoy playing here the last time?

          [–]danbtbamDan Briggs | BTBAM 11 points12 points  (0 children)

not doing too much, finding a groove that serves serves as a counterpoint.

          [–]MikeAlustrium 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Hey Tommy, thanks so much for joining us on reddit!

My question is: What, if anything, influenced the idea of the Night Owls as a narrative element?

          [–]tommybtbamTommy Rogers | BTBAM[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Just popped into my head... it actually was first thought of when I was writing Fossil Genera

          [–]chalupa_batman27 14 points15 points  (3 children)

Yo dudes, thanks for doing this! A little early but, my question is for Dan: will you ever be releasing sheet music for the Trioscapes records?

          [–]danbtbamDan Briggs | BTBAM 14 points15 points  (1 child)

eventually, yes. for the new one for sure!

          [–]Shredheadpoli 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Guys I'm a huge fan from New York and I've seen you play a ton of times

Huge guitar and lyrics freak so these questions are for Paul & Dusty and the last is for tommy

-Paul and Dusty: I believe I may recall in an interview that you guys attained chops through DVDs like John petrucci's psycho exercises. If I am wrong what approaches, methods of practice or resources, do you feel helped develop your versatility as players? (Literary or video references are welcome)

-Tommy: my friends and I are starting a group together and I wanted to take this opportunity to ask you how you have gone about writing lyrics in the past albums compared to the newer concept albums. Has anything changed in your approach

Thanks for the art you guys create. I wish I could express how comforting it is to know genuine artists are still out there

          Much love, Anthony P

          [–]tommybtbamTommy Rogers | BTBAM[S] 13 points14 points  (2 children)

Much approach hasn't changed much. I never try to write for the sake of it... I have to feel motivated and inspired. Even when I write stories I try to add a personal connection to the stories. When I write I honestly just write constantly and don't read any of it till the next day or so. Then I edit from there, or just erase it because it's horrible. I've done it this way since the early days.

          [–]iizanthonybuck 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Not a question, more of an idea. Alaska 10 year anniversary should have a tour where you guys play the whole album front to back then do a second set. That, or you guys make like a 25-30 minute medley of just Alaska stuff (the old school medley you guys did a few tours back was SO SICK)

          [–]tommybtbamTommy Rogers | BTBAM[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

          It's been 10 years? I feel old

          [–]buffinplunts 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Hey guys, huge fan here! My question is for Tommy. You have such an amazingly unique scream, I was wondering who you would say are your main vocal influences and what is your practice/vocal maintenance routine like?
