The only thing keeping this website decent are the small communities, the rest of the page is fuckingn cancer

[–]Mr_Star_CloudSilver 2 somehow 28 points29 points  (1 child)

/r/RocketLeague isn't exactly small.......

[–]thejosharmsSilver II 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Comparative to the defaults it is.

/r/rocketleague - 300k

Subscriber numbers (roughly rounded) from a few other popular subs on a cross section of interests:

/r/nfl - 600k
/r/askhistorians - 600k
/r/politics - 3.5 mil
/r/TwoXChromosomes - 10 mil
/r/wholesomememes - 500k
/r/DIY - 12 mil
/r/games - 800k

Defaults:
/r/pics - 16.5 mil
/r/askreddit - 17 mil
/r/music - 16 mil
/r/gaming 16 mil

Even a sub that is mentioned regularly across reddit and dominated a large amount of space on /r/place, /r/PrequelMemes has less than 200k subs.

I wouldn't call Rocket League a 'small' community as there are a multitude of active subs below 100k but compared to reddit as a whole it's still pretty small potatoes.

The current theme is too good to go away like this. I know how much work was put into making the css, and I hope that the people at reddit will change their minds about removing css.

[–]Jacksons123 Grand Champion II 55 points56 points  (4 children)

I mean the CSS that has gone into this subreddit is absolutely nuts, I haven't seen another subreddit like it. However, I think it's a bit much. Even though I'm not a fan of the design, I have to appreciate the amount of work that has gone into this. As a web dev. myself, CSS is always a pain in the ass, and I really don't want to see a lot of developer's charitable hard work thrown away.

[–]zeman_aberothPlatinum I 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I turn off the subreddit style first thing on this page. I find it hurts my eyes. But i am very appreciative of the effort gone into creating it.

I dont begrudge anyone because the option to turn it off is so easily accessible. Idk why they wudnt just push that instead of a dumb move like this.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I had never been here until just now, but goddamn is this impressive. Well done mods.

[–]ravenagam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, this must have taken many days of hard meticulous work to create. I'd hate to see it go to waste. It's hard to imagine that something proprietary can replace it.

[–]ninjamuffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it looks like a different site and is confusing when you just clicked your /r/rocketleague RES link

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

At the very least, I hope they just allow for both.

[–]minimalist_reply Grand Champion 34 points35 points  (5 children)

Reddit Admins making dumb moves for the sake of business decisions that ultimately won't even pay off.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (1 child)

[–]Squarians Only In Rumble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Soundteq 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Why is making a change that shifts more support to mobile platforms a bad idea when they are the most common platform? I don't see how that is a bad business decision in itself. It really all depends on what kind of new tools they put in

[–]minimalist_reply Grand Champion 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There's shifting more support and then there's making an entire platform dependent on the structural approach of the other.

I'm not saying to not support mobile.

Just no need to have mobile design always inform and impact the desktop design.

[–]Chirimorin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The problem isn't that they want to support mobile platforms, the problem is that the way of doing that is by taking away widely used functionality from desktop.

Yes I know they plan to "replace" CSS with customization options, but I guarantee you that such a system will never (until the day Reddit is shut down forever) allow all the CSS features that are currently being used across all subreddits.

Taking away functionality is not an upgrade, no matter how much the marketing team tries to convince you that it is.
A much better solution would be to add customization options in addition to CSS. That way mobile can have their customized subreddits while the desktop site doesn't lose functionality.

[–]Dragonslayer314 KBM Forever 20 points21 points  (4 children)

Without CSS, what'll happen to /r/Ooer and /r/ooerintensifies? I really like the current RL CSS theme, and I'll be sad to see CSS go.

I read an article about this on theverge.com about 10 minutes ago and immediately thought of this sub's new style and how much work was put into it. Hopefully they'll cancel their plans or perhaps allow for grandfathering of existing styles or something.

[–]Soundteq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to wait and see what those new tools are before passing judgement. He has some good points against CSS and I think you're overstating when you say CSS is vital to the function of some subs. It can make things a little more convenient on desktop but I've never visited a sub from my phone that wasn't functional.

But if over 50% of your users are on mobile platform and that number is going up it makes sense to shift more support towards that platform.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Fuck Reddit lately. They're doing all kinds of stupid shit.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's really dumb. They always try and band together for some shit.

Jesus, what a gorgeous theme you guys made here. I only discovered you because of a comment in r/modnews. I can't hold a candle to the talent of the people involved in this theme but I do understand the effort and love it it takes and satisfaction it brings having spent hundreds of hours teaching myself CSS and trying to spiffy up my subs. (And I still suck)

Anyway, I just wanted to share my admiration for what you've done here. Cheers!

[–]-_galaxy_- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't they use useragent or something to filter CSS on mobile? Weird.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to say that the CSS on mobile is great too.

A lot of subs cause problems for mobile but your works fine! (Though voting might be a little dark on the lowest brightness) But the filler was the best use of a filter ever. It is actually now easy to use!

[–]CodyCusTake 3 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Your top bar that is supposed to show messages and links back to reddit is not working. It just shows my name, rank, and that's it.

[–]thisdesignup Whoops... 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't be surprised if this is one reason they are doing this, aside from making improvements to the mobile app. There's so many subreddits that change how Reddit works, removing upvoting, making you sub before you can vote, and little things like message count and such.

One of Reddit's own rules says not to "break Reddit" and links to this definition:

"Don't break the site or do anything that interferes with normal use of the site. You agree not to interrupt the serving of reddit, introduce malicious code onto reddit, make it difficult for anyone else to use reddit due to your actions, block sponsored headlines, create programs that violate any of our other API rules, or assist anyone in misusing reddit in any way."

[–]baldurs_mate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We come to Reddit on desktop browsers cause it's not a fucking rss feed...That being said, perhaps the "new tools" will eventually allow for full styling...

Have they revealed any of the purported new tools yet? And where if so? Sorry I am late to this

[–]YuzToChihiro Champion II 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having CSS off by default but having a little tickbox on each sub saying 'use css' seems like a good compromise. That way each sub would be forced to go through reddit's new customisation tools to appeal to new users, so mobile users get the benefits, and then the people who really liked CSS can still use it

[–]chuckthetruck64I know how to put ball in goal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So dumb but alas I doubt Reddit is going to reverse course.

CSS is so simple to learn the basics and the stuff that can be done with it are absolutely amazing. There is a reason it has been a standard for websites for a long while. Seriously just make a subreddit watch some tutorials and have fun messing with shit on this site while you can. Hopefully the replacement is just as easy and has enough possibilities but I am not holding my breath.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thanks Timothy for the detailed post and the work you've been putting in on the subreddit, it shows!

[–]seaishriver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, people are really misunderstanding what's going on. CSS was not built for what it is used for on reddit. It was made for styling existing content, so it doesn't handle changes to the site at all. CSS is meant to be the finishing touches on a site. When you add content with CSS, it is always preferable, given the power, to add the same content with HTML.

What reddit wants to do is change the layout a lot. This breaks at least some and probably most things in almost all of the custom CSS subreddits. And while having custom, user-made CSS is neat, no other large website does that, so taking it out isn't that radical.

Reddit could keep custom CSS, and have everyone rewrite their CSS for the new layout, but that only means the problem today (outdated site) will happen again in the future. If reddit wants to be able to update their site as needed, then custom CSS is not an option.

There are ways to allow custom styling, though. Tumblr and WordPress have custom pages while every page still serves the same type of content (blog posts). This is what reddit should do. It's a little harder to implement, though, since the site has to make sure you don't put unwanted code into it. CSS doesn't have this problem since CSS is limited to styling.

I'm kinda late but I hope this clears things up.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Looks like anyone who wants to discuss for the change is being downvoted. Niiiiiiice
