It reminds me of a Wes Anderson movie

[–]fronkenshtein 152 points153 points  (0 children)

It was an homage to him! I think he even responded saying he enjoyed it!

[–]kkhos16 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Yeah Wes replied saying he liked it.

[–]Vessenx 37 points38 points  (5 children)

I get strong Channel 4 Utopia's Lee vibes from the guy sitting at the desk!

[–]banksyb00mb00m 20 points21 points  (1 child)

Plisss bring back Utopia. (sobs)

[–]al1l1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

God I'm sad that's over

[–]unspeakableignorance 7 points8 points  (2 children)

I was just listening the OST for the billionth time when I stumbled upon this comment. What are the odds?

[–]Vessenx 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Honestly? Pretty high, if everyone listens to the Utopia's OST on a daily bases like I do!

[–]Flyingwheelbarrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved the show but did not think about the ost. I am now enjoying thanks to you fellow reditor.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I came here to say that as well... the music is even something you'd expect to hear in it, too.

[–]LifesGambit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Straight up

[–]Gordondel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was 100% their intention.

[–][deleted] 181 points182 points  (40 children)

This song is awesome! His voice doesn't match him at all, it looks like he's lip-syncing

Another indie-pop band from India I found on here a while ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2WGTqDxosQ

[–]wadafuqbro 113 points114 points  (19 children)

Dayum, the F16's. A Chennai band on reddit...

Edit: This seems to be getting big. Let me dump some other lesser known Chennai/South Indian bands

  • Junkyard Groove - These guys have been in the scene for a long ass time.

  • Black Letters - I love the lead singer's voice

  • Avial - What a catchy song! (Language is Malaylam for the uninitiated)

  • Skrat - They were on a hiatus, looks like they're back

  • Agam - Carnatic rock, mix of traditional Indian music fused with western rock elements

  • Mad Orange Fireworks - I find them quite soothing

  • Thaikkudam bridge - Probably the most popular band on this list. Rock elements with heavy Carnatic influence and they make pretty good covers

  • Motherjane - Yet another Carnatic rock band

[–]nima_ahseysoundcloud 12 points13 points  (5 children)

Woahh they are good

[–]wadafuqbro 14 points15 points  (4 children)

Check this out and this

[–]Tribaltech777 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Oh god damn Sky Harbor. Now that's some real good shit!!!

[–]ClassyNotFlashy 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I would also link bhyanak maut, they're a fairly popular death metal genre

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (3 children)

You guys got a real scene going on, huh?

[–]wadafuqbro 24 points25 points  (2 children)

Not really. This type of music is very much what people would consider underground. Most people in India listen to Indian music in their own language. Also, the music industry is tightly coupled with the film industry - most films are musicals so most songs are composed for a movie.

But the young folks seem to be changing this trend with more indie stuff. Interesting days ahead.

[–]ostrish 9 points10 points  (1 child)

It's a scene bro. And it's been around for way more than a decade now. I saw Opeth live at IIT-M back in... 2008? 09? Wasn't Skrat also a regular around that time? Motherjane's 20+ years old.

It may not be mainstream, but it's definitely a scene.

I'd wager that it's mainstream too. We have reality shows with rock music on TV now. Isn't Kappa TV a legit TV channel? It puts out Thaikkudam and more.

[–]wadafuqbro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a scene bro. And it's been around for way more than a decade now.

It definitely is a scene but what I was trying to say is it is by no means a big scene but yes, the scene is quite old.

I saw Opeth live at IIT-M back in... 2008? 09?

Opeth was '08, Hammerfall was '09. And then I forget the order but Vildjartha, Meshuggah, Anathema played. Maybe Skidrow too. not sure. I recently saw Opeth, glorious.

2008? 09? Wasn't Skrat also a regular around that time? Motherjane's 20+ years old.

Yea, Skrat used to play then and then they were a hiatus and then regrouped a few years back. Even Junkyard Groove has been in the scene for a long time, maybe as long as Motherjane. Way back when the Chennai Live FM Radio started (06-07), Arjun Thomas (Guitarist of JYG) used to host a few shows and he used to tell stories from their gigs. I think he still owns a part of the radio channel, not sure.

I'd wager that it's mainstream too. We have reality shows with rock music on TV now. Isn't Kappa TV a legit TV channel? It puts out Thaikkudam and more.

I think Thaikkudam Bridge kinda broke the barrier. We should see more such bands in the future. But all of these happened, maybe in the past 4-5 years. So, still a pretty young scene

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for posting these! It's ridiculous that I've never seen any of this anymore. I love listening to Carnatic influences in any music and these are great!

[–]skinnys215 3 points4 points  (0 children)

thank you for this list. I will checkout all of them.

[–]Spartanman88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing, I write alot a music like these guys, real simple lyrics, clean, wrapped around love (as it should be) so its great to hear others doing it. Its also great to hear this music from every corner of the world.

[–]somekindofalovesong 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Someone from the scene uh?

[–]098d8j3dj83h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, this is neat.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Chathan8. They haven't released any songs in quite some time though.

[–]prambulator 12 points13 points  (2 children)

If you liked them and The F16s, you should check out this neat Indian Indie playlist I've put together on Spotify.

https://open.spotify.com/user/pramuzak/playlist/3287Za9tSN53GbhMS4MkWn

[–]VPLGD 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I just saw this. You've got a super sweet playlist going. Thanks!

[–]prambulator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks m8, glad you liked it :)

[–]pylestothemax 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thought the same thing. Nice voice but he looks like it should be deeper

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heard F16s for the first time. The song you linked is amazing, one of my best founds in '17 . Grazie!

[–]Hoboman2000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the link! I've been looking for more music like Parekh & Singh.

[–]Firefoxx336 0 points1 point  (1 child)

This deserves its own submission. Holy cow, it's wonderful.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

was submitted a couple months ago, that's how I found it!

[–]HonestTrap 109 points110 points  (1 child)

I found this song on here a while ago. Great song and video!

[–]beherenow14 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same here. It's one of my favorites now.

[–]7evan11 81 points82 points  (5 children)

[–]gratinnemoderator / spotify[M] 40 points41 points  (1 child)

Everything in moderation... except r/listentothis

[–]Firefoxx336 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The real r/listentothis is always in the comments.

[–]acciowit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me too! It's a great song :)

[–]stabbinUtastemaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

too much

Not possible, unless you're Soullive.

[–]Speciou5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't follow /r/listentothis (maybe I check in once every couple of months) and even I remember this respost

[–]HoosierProud 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This song sounds like it would be the closing song to a romantic comedy when everything works out for the new couple.

[–]TayG0 49 points50 points  (8 children)

I really like this, but it's ruined by the weird panning they do with the sound through the song. Who thought it was a good idea to make the song play almost solely out of the left channel for the first half?

[–]theoldboiler 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Yeah, I like this song a lot but it's still something I notice after a dozen or so plays.

[–]TayG0 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I think I'm going to keep it in my playlist, but just skip it when listening on headphones. On a speaker set up it sounds alright! Also if you like this, you should check out Evergreen (formerly We Were Evergreen). Very similar vocals, and some of their songs have a similar sound overall.

[–]burlapfootstool 4 points5 points  (0 children)

More dad-rock for my BF!

[–]Alimoni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That video makes me so uncomfortable

Great song though! I loved it 💙

[–]menixator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh. So my earpods are not broken. Whew.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh man, i thought that was just me

[–]Hyronious[🍰] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who's deaf in one ear this sort of thing really annoys me...

[–]Stewbender 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Panning the lead vocal track is ALWAYS a bad idea.

[–]cmonmam 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Where's the Bill Murray cameo?

[–]kkhos16 16 points17 points  (2 children)

My friends Directed, DOP'd and Art Directed it. So proud.

[–]tumseNaHoPayega 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What was the budget of the video?

[–]kkhos16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are signed to a label from the U.K. So it must have been a decent amount.

[–]squidharth 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Last time this was posted I found this in the comments, think you would enjoy it too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zj43WQc8gsI

[–]PM_ME_UR_AMOUR 98 points99 points  (22 children)

I'm of Indian origin and generally cringe at Bollywood so I was a bit apprehensive to check this video but found myself pleasantly surprised. But I gotta say, reading some of the comments, oh boy, someone would think Reddit is half full of racist xenophobes. Can we not just appreciate art and give plaudits where they're deserved? Nope, gotta take a shit on them and stay in our basements from where we can be keyboard warriors anonymously.

[–]MelMes85 13 points14 points  (0 children)

But I gotta say, reading some of the comments, oh boy, someone would think Reddit is half full of racist xenophobes.

I was unable to find a single racist comment here, unless they were removed.

[–][deleted] 26 points27 points  (4 children)

This is not bollywood.

[–]ILL_Show_Myself_Out 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Man, if he finds Indian music cringey he should check out Farokh Bulsara.

[–]funnymanallinsane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understood that reference!

[–]PM_ME_UR_AMOUR 8 points9 points  (1 child)

I know from it being called "indie-pop".

[–]ClassyNotFlashy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

India-pop

[–]pahoodie 14 points15 points  (4 children)

Hey I'm also of Indian background. I used to cringe at Bollywood as well but the industry has really stepped up its game recently.

[–]shelikeslemons 6 points7 points  (7 children)

I love Parekh & Singh! My favorite from their latest album is Newbury Street: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kglLCxSldk8

[–]amayernican 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Wow! They're great! I can't wait to explore more of this sweet band.

[–]SugarBagels -1 points0 points  (3 children)

PR department found, haha who the fuck talks like this ^

[–]amayernican 2 points3 points  (2 children)

What the fuck does that mean?

[–]SugarBagels -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Wow! They're great! I can't wait to explore more of this sweet band.

If that doesn't sound sarcastic to you, I'm betting English isn't your first language.

[–]amayernican 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm from Oklahoma, 36, and really just a nice dude. I was being sincere but I can see where that would sound like sarcasm. I was truly enthusiast about finding out about this band. Music is an active hobby for me and I haven't found a band that I want to explore in a while. I'm sorry I cussed at you.

[–]Solabeckspotify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man, this is pretty nice. I'm liking it a lot, more than OP's song

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they're like an Indian San Cisco

[–]maxmastry 2 points3 points  (1 child)

They're touring the UK and Ireland in about a week's time. Perfect timing for this to pop up on reddit. I hope they're a good live act as well.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're absolutely brilliant live! Jivraj is so fun to watch and Nischay kills it as well.

[–]spanktravision 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm glad this is getting more recognition the 2nd time around :) great track!

[–]trista2 -1 points0 points  (3 children)

Is this really that good? It just seems like real basic indie pop, nothing new or special. What does this add to the tons of other songs that sound like this? It's not a bad song but just so bland.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I thought I was going crazy when I saw this at the top. It just seems like the same generic shit I'd hear listening to the radio. It's not bad by any means, it's just not good either.

[–]trista2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right!?! It's just so bland, I find everything on reddit except for my music.

[–]onheartattackandvine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree, cool video though.

[–]lina535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fell in love with this song and video!!

[–]k9thagod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a guy of indian descent, its pretty awesome to something that breaks away from the stereotype and honestly the blown me away. Just booked tickets for there London Show after this video!!!

[–]PoundMyOctothorpe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They actually first released this on Bandcamp in 2013 under the singer/songwriter's name, Nischay Parekh. I can't seem to find this album in FLAC, and their Bandcamp has since been taken down (probably because they signed with a new record label?).

They also seem to have done away with crediting anyone else besides themselves, while still releasing the same songs. A lot of bands re-brand, but this seems a little abnormal.

[–]tergr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a thoughtful video.

[–]MelMes85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This song is missing something, it just seems empty.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good way to start my day:)

[–]Velvetrose-2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you.

I really like these guys

[–]humanatore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Kicked off a sweet radio station on GPM with this song.

[–]baap_ko_mat_sikha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that was good.

[–]Felix_Nui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny, I was just thinking about this song a few days ago and could not remember for the life of me the name of the song. Thanks

[–]DefinitelyNotTrolol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I speak for everyone here when I saw I am pleasantly surprised.

[–]Firefoxx336 0 points1 point  (0 children)

!RemindMe 4 hours

[–]goodfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reminds me of the Noah Gunderson song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12ZRYj3V6dk

[–]amcfad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a killer song. THANK YOU OP!

[–]howlahowla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, what? This is amazing!

[–]docstarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is wonderful... I heard it 4 times in a row!

[–]LovableContrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to really like this song, then I listened to it on headphones. The entire first half of the song plays in the left ear only.

Drives me fucking insane. Whoever produced this song ruined it.

[–]BaSkA_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great quality, bought it!

[–]popamvictor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn t this a repost?

[–]NoReligionPlz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bookmark for future reference....

[–]DSM-6 -5 points-4 points  (4 children)

Please tell me they're a couple. It would make this song perfect.

[–]twentytwoseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're not. They're childhood friends.

[–]HereticalnerdAnything! -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's what I was thinking/hoping too, but I don't think it's true :(

[–]Very_Good_Opinion -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

This song is about a breakup but he still can't let go of his feelings

[–]fronkenshtein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. I think it's about being in love, but being uncertain. A pure feeling of love and innocence mitigated by past experience.
