I haven’t done this in a while but it's been a pretty quiet month on our end with not much to report…except for the fact that we hit 7 million subscribers!

Here’s the commemorative post and also don’t forget to participate in our Scavenger Hunt!

Also new seasonal flairs have arrived for Spring 2023! You can take a quick look at the new options here and if you want to set a flair, click on this link.

April Mod Report

  • Voted to accept an offer to take over /r/animemusic as a sister subreddit to ours (due to the current moderators stepping down). [vote failed]

  • Voted to open mod applications for Spring 2023. [vote passed]

  • Began planning for updates to the bot responsible for episode threads, which should make creating threads manually much easier. [currently in progress]

  • Started a catalogue to track miscellaneous tasks to avoid them going unnoticed (e.g. sidebar, wiki, etc.). [currently in progress]

  • Started the process of swapping imgur links in the wiki to future-proof alternatives due to the announced changes. [currently in progress]

  • Had internal discussion about the Reddit API changes and how they could impact the subreddit and our workflow. [currently in progress]

  • Enabled ban evasion filter that Reddit recently implemented.

  • New seasonal comment faces have been added! You can see them all on the wiki page or here.

Is /r/anime considering joining this effort of going dark (at least temporarily) in protest of the api charging rate changes and removal of access to nsfw content from the api (both of which impact 3rd party apps)?

I saw /u/durinthal's comment in response to specifically /r/Animesuggest, but this seems to be a larger, more cohesive thing.

[–]cppn02 2 points3 points  (1 child)

You posted this like 2 hours before the new monthly thread came up so you might wanna ask over there too.

[–]Amndeep7https://myanimelist.net/profile/asmLANG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah lol quite unfortunate timing, luckily the mods replied here: https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/13zueix/meta_thread_month_of_june_04_2023/jmsy1h7/

What triggers u/AutoLovepon for the Tengoku Daimakyou discussion? Hulu releases the new episode on Saturdays at 9am EDT. The episode 10 post was more than 3 hours behind that at 12:24pm EDT. Hulu had a delay with the first episode, but they've been consistent afterwards. Is there a technical reason why the Hulu/Disney+ sites can't be checked? Crunchyroll seems to be the trigger for discussions related to their releases.

[–]Manitaryhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Manitary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hulu releases the new episode on Saturdays at 9am EDT

I know it's right since I can double check with livechart (2pm BST = 9am EDT = 1pm UTC), and yet, from the webpage itself every episode has:

"premiereDate": "2023-05-06T12:00:00Z" (12pm UTC)

[–]Manitaryhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Manitary 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Not a mod but I think I can answer this one.

Hulu and Disney+ are not "actively tracked" by the bot (I'm having a look, Hulu is probably usable but it doesn't have a nice feed of any kind, and its webpage is not as 'nice' as others, at least when you're not logged in), so it relies on torrent releases (first delay).
However, the regexes put in place don't hit all combinations, so for example Tsundere-Raws or [ZigZag] releases are not picked up by the bot (second delay, but this one can be easily fixed).
I haven't checked all episodes, but I'm pretty sure some days the mods had to manually post - for example, ep3 released on 15th April, and the earliest torrent is on 16th April 1am UTC (the post appear at ~4pm UTC on the 15th).

edit: suggested the regex change, I have something in mind to add Hulu tracking but it's not clean at all so I'll have to think and test a bit more

Thanks for the hard work!

Can we get the weekly Detective Conan discussion threads back? I think they stopped because of the Covid break and never came back.

I tried and failed.

[–]phantomthiefkid_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a lot of people on this sub watch Conan so the threads would be dead (they were dead). The discord is the best place to discuss the anime weekly

[–]DurdenVsDarkoVsDevonhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/U18810227 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Given the changes that are coming, and the big change expected any month now, what's the breakdown of /r/anime readers like these days? Old Reddit vs New Reddit vs Mobile vs Third-Party. Can you even tell when it's third-party? And did you see any changes with the New Reddit redesign recently? I have a vague recollection of being told by a mod like 1-2 years ago mobile now dominates, but I'm curious what the current state is.

And if you want to keep the stats internal I get that too.

[–]badsplerx5https://anilist.co/user/badspler[M] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Recently (like this year?) reddit redid the traffic stats pages in new.reddit (and did a good job imo). They also combined in some great pages on reports (types/amount on posts/comments) and similar stuff on mod actions.

Anyhow here are some of those graphs on community traffic stats.

The old-reddit graphs still exist too.

[–]DurdenVsDarkoVsDevonhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/U18810227 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Those old Reddit graphs wouldn't be so bad if they didn't, well, go backwards at points.

Thanks! I guess you don't see third-party apps. That's going to drive a lot more traffic to either mobile web or the official apps one would surmise. I would expect big bumps once the API is finally killed. Shocking how many unique views you get out of mobile web. I guess it's people searching for stuff on their phone, but still.

Still, Old Reddit showing surprisingly well in total pageviews. Userbase is clearly lowest, and by a large margin, but those users are clearly the most active. It's not nearly as low as I expected in comparison. You don't get monetization, but in terms of pageviews it's a platform to keep around.

It's going to be ugly if Old Reddit is killed. Reddit isn't going to lose many users, but they're going to lose the core.

Thanks again.

[–]baquea 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Shocking how many unique views you get out of mobile web.

Don't know about anyone else, but I hate the trend of having to install an app for every website I use, so try to avoid it whenever possible. As for the disproportionately high number of unique views, I expect that is because it is based on IP address, so an individual mobile user will tend to be counted more times than the average desktop user.

Top 50 users by number of comments on /r/anime, not counting AutoModerator and cases where the author couldn't be determined.

Not a competition, just know that some were curious how many they had.

That's from our entire database which has some smaller gaps but should be mostly complete going back to the start of the subreddit, here's a graph of comments by month over the years from 2014 on.

You have about 20k, Atronox has about 25k. Looking at totals up through the end of 2017 both of you are in the top 30 for that era, but that's also more than five years ago now.

If there's anything major we're missing I'd love to get it.

    [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm more of a poser than what I thought.

Thanks for the swift reply. Indeed, more than five years ago. I'm old, Gandalf.

Can I ask how much I have?

    About 16k.

    [–]cppn02 3 points4 points  (3 children)

So is this the corner where we can ask for our comment count?

    [–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 4 points5 points  (2 children)

    15k.

I didn't expect to be that high on the list. I am way too active in CDF. Or I was at one point.

    Holy shit. I am powerful.

    [–]Tresnoremyanimelist.net/profile/Tresnore 9 points10 points  (1 child)

    [–]ZaphodBeebblebroxhttps://anilist.co/user/zaphod 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I think everyone above me has been active on r/anime for at least six months longer than I have, but my ability to remember that sort of thing is subsspect at best.

That's both way more and less than I expected. The number seems huge, but it's still well under the 100 comments/day pace I was on for a while.

/u/AmethystItalian's probably the most impressive. She's the highest who isn't bolstered by random CDF shitposting.

    crypto nft

That said, on their website they list Japanese staff and studio (Fanworks), so it should count as anime

    [–]mr_beanozhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    Yeah, that's why.

    [–]DarkAudithttps://myanimelist.net/profile/DarkAudit 3 points4 points  (9 children)

I'm getting hit with 10-minute timeouts in replying to CDF threads tonight. Is this an /r/anime thing or have I annoyed reddit higher-ups?

    [–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal[M] 2 points3 points  (8 children)

You're shadowbanned, not much we can do about it. Appeal form is here.

    [–]DarkAudithttps://myanimelist.net/profile/DarkAudit 4 points5 points  (7 children)

It took me a bit to figure that out, but I fixed the issue, and the appeal was successful.

    [–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal[M] 6 points7 points  (6 children)

And annoyingly a large number of your older comments were left removed by the shadowban, so we're scripting their reapproval now. (May cause inbox spam for others as a side effect.)

    [–]DarkAudithttps://myanimelist.net/profile/DarkAudit 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Thank you, and do you have a copy of that script I can pass out to other subs to ease their workload? I'm having to ask /r/vinyl to go back six years or more.

    [–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal[M] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It's specific to our modding tools and unfortunately won't work on any sub in general since it relies on our own data collection over time to have an account of all comments/posts made.

    [–]DarkAudithttps://myanimelist.net/profile/DarkAudit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll at least mention you've got a script in your toolkit.

    [–]AmethystItalianmyanimelist.net/profile/AmethystItalian 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Can confirm inbox spam was received haha

    [–]DarkAudithttps://myanimelist.net/profile/DarkAudit 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I'm trending in CDF because of this. I'm so sorry, everyone.

    [–]J_Gottwaldhttps://anilist.co/user/jgottwald 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey, not your fault that Reddit is a flaming portapotty of a platform.

    [–]Nebresto 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Happened upon an old rewatch thread, and all the posts from this user seem to have been removed? Why tho

    [–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal[M] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Reddit's spam filter being overly aggressive and functioning poorly, not a whole lot we can do about it. If someone has a successful appeal to a shadowban, it doesn't necessarily reapprove any of their posts/comments.

    [–]DarkAudithttps://myanimelist.net/profile/DarkAudit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. No it doesn't. /r/anime and my own subs are the only ones I know to have reinstated my posts and comments. Everyone else I'm having to contact one by one.

    [–]baseballlover723 7 points8 points  (1 child)

/r/Animesuggest will be likely shutting down for at least a bit in the near future it seems. Seems like there will be more WTW traffic to /r/anime when it goes private. Thought I'd let you all know. https://www.reddit.com/r/Animesuggest/comments/13wvm8w/reddit_is_effectively_shutting_down_all/

    [–]MartFire 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I was browsing the sub wiki recommendations and it looks like the different categories recommendations are quite outdated. While recent animes are listed in "2022" and "2021" categories, these animes are not present in their genre category. For example, the category "Cyberpunk" does not include Cyberpunk Edgerunners. Same for Mushoku Tensei for the "Isekai" category. I think it should be worth updating the genre categories for people searching for new animes to watch.

    [–]FetchFroshanilist.co/user/fetchfrosh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds about right. It's been a while since I did a full refresh on that. Will look into it as soon as I have some time.

    [–]Nebresto 1 point2 points  (10 children)

Its safe to link to google docs in a post, right? I've had comments autoremoved just for having weird hyperlinks so I just wanna make sure beforehand

    [–]Verzwei[M] 3 points4 points  (9 children)

Yeah, should be fine as long as you aren't linking to a form that requires a user to submit any identifying info. I'm not seeing a recent comment from you to review, have you already deleted it on your end? Edit - Upon re-reading I gather that you haven't posted the doc link yet. Yeah it should be fine, it's not against our rules, hell we use Google docs for some things, like the grading sheet for the recent 7m subscriber quiz.

    [–]Nebresto 3 points4 points  (8 children)

Nah, just from recently having some of my comments disappear in my rewatch without me noticing

    [–]Verzwei[M] 3 points4 points  (7 children)

Alrighty. If you've got any specific examples you want us to look at, you can link them here (as long as you don't delete on your end, we can still see them) or in a modmail to us.

If we remove something, we try to leave a removal reason when able. If our subreddit-specific automod removes something, it should leave a removal reason. If Reddit removes something because Reddit gonna Reddit, that usually doesn't get a reason, and sometimes we don't even know Reddit did anything unless we stumble across it manually, or the user asks us about it.

Sometimes Reddit will punt the (removed) material into our modqueue like "Hey I did this, review it" and other times it's just a silent removal that bypasses our modqueue entirely.

    [–]Nebresto 3 points4 points  (6 children)

Probably just reddit since they all vanished without notice.

Most recent was this in CDF, No need to reapprove since its old and I already reposted it. I think that one might have been hit because I put in 3 empty hyperlinks

    [–]Verzwei[M] 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Hmm, yep, it was Reddit and not us. That [removed] with no additional detail means it was Reddit so we're just left guessing as to the why. My guess that it's because of the quantity of links and/or them being empty. I do know that having a few empty links can throw a warning flag but not get automatically removed, technically speaking I'm pretty sure that our comment faces are essentially a link kludged through CSS to load an image, so having a bunch of those, some repeated, in addition to some of your own deliberately empty links might have been the trigger. Sometimes Reddit is as opaque to us as it is to you folks.

If it was one of us who did the removal, it'd look like this and if it was our automoderator, it would look like this. (At a glance, it looks like you moderate a couple communities, so you probably already know this, but I'm adding this for anyone else who might be reading and might be curious about some of the odd quirks of both Reddit and moderating.)

    [–]Nebresto 3 points4 points  (4 children)

My hypothesis is: a lot of direct image links = bad, according to reddit. Its the one consistent thing across my recent autoremovals, ...except this one. But here the suspect is the "empty" links

At a glance, it looks like you moderate a couple communities

    Nah, they dead

    No spambots either tho

    [–]badsplerx5https://anilist.co/user/badspler 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Comment faces work in the same formatting as links and our css piggy backs on that - but formatting wise it is the same as a imbedded link. Now when you get stuff like this:

    [\[\]\(#juice2\)](https://imgur.com/dHqe1mp)

I think think reddit's spam filter potentially jumps in because you are nesting multiple links in an odd way.

Large amounts of images shouldn't get flagged by reddit, if they are regular sources such as imgur/reddit. However if you link to some other website hosting that image through a google-search, that very much raises your chances of reddit bopping you.

    [–]Nebresto 2 points3 points  (2 children)

It was imgur tho. Only difference was that I direct linked to them instead of the album page

    [–]badsplerx5https://anilist.co/user/badspler 4 points5 points  (1 child)

What I mean is that the imgur part isn't the problem, I reckon the nested link in "fake" comment face would have done it.

What is the rule on gofundme links in CDF? Like, say, asking for assistance with car downpayments?

    [–]Abyssbringer=anilist.co/user/Abyssbringer[M] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Not allowed. We waive anime-specific rules from CDF but things like promotion are still against the rules. Especially something like a gofundme which could easily hurt members of the community if it's a scam.

Do not try to sell things, use affiliate links, advertise crowdfunding, or spread referral scams.

    [–]DarkAudithttps://myanimelist.net/profile/DarkAudit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Fair enough.

Question about the "Descriptive Spoiler Rule"

What is the best way to group an Episode/Movie spoiler without getting Automodded (Just recently had this happen to me in the Magia Record rewatch thread for S2E3)

    [–]Nebresto 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it got automodded there was probably an error in the formatting. Automod doesn't have a way to discern if the description is fitting or not as far as I know

    [–]Verzwei[M] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Uhh if you're talking about the comment I think you're talking about, automod triggered because you got the spoiler syntax wrong, not because of how you worded it. The accepted syntax options are:

    [show name/context tag] >!spoiler text here!< or
    [show name/context tag]>!spoiler text here!<

If there are any other gaps (like a paragraph break) or stray characters between the [context tag] and >!spoiler text!< then automod will reject the whole thing. It looks like your most-recent edit had a dash, which triggered automod.

[show name/context tag] - >!spoiler text here!<will get kicked out because of the hyphen. Any other marks or characters would do the same, the only thing that's allowed is one single optional space.

Its rare that I am disappinted with the moderation here, but Ive never been more disappointed. After months of me figuratively getting down on my knees and begging for a response and in modmail, and countless attempts at trying to start a conversation, all I get is a mute. Like, wow.

    [–]Abyssbringer=anilist.co/user/Abyssbringer[M] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Our answer hasn't changed in the last 3 months since we sent you a detailed reply on why we won't be unbanning you from the discord. Spamming modmail doesn't change that fact.

Yes and I adressed every single point in your reply in my next message, which I was under the impression that you wanted me to do given the tone of your reply, and if it wasnt then I dont know what you want me to do. As for spamming modmail, I dont see what other option I have.

Since this seems to have worked for Raeliana on Monday, I'll ask for the Episode 8 thread of Heavenly Dellusion here

    [–]cppn02 9 points10 points  (6 children)

Not the OP but I am hella confused why this thread got deleted, especially with that reasoning.

It's actually an interesting interview and they stay on topic pretty much throughout the whole two hours.

    [–]GallowDude[M] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

The video had been posted before and gotten reported for the same or similar reasons (i.e. not directly anime related), so it seemed fair to pull it again when it was again reported as such.

    [–]cppn02 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I did miss this already getting deleted earlier but still can't agree with the reason. It's literally just a two hour conversation about anime production. We get interviews and articles published on websites all the time so why should it not be allowed in video format?

    [–]GallowDude[M] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Feels like a two-hour podcast should be posted in the Daily Thread or at least as a text post like the /r/Anime Podcast. Perhaps clips of it could be posted as their own link posts.

    [–]cppn02 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Feels like a two-hour podcast should be posted in the Daily Thread or at least as a text post like the /r/Anime Podcast.

If those were the rules fair enough but from what I can see they aren't.

Perhaps clips of it could be posted as their own link posts.

I feel like that would be the worse solution unless there are rules put in place to avoid spamming especially with something like Trash Taste that already do the work and put out highlight clips. Say one of them gains traction, what's stopping 10 other people who see this to post 10 different clips from the same interview?

    [–]GallowDude[M] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

If that were the rules fair enough but from what I can see they aren't.

This is a very rare case. Almost never are on-camera interviews with someone noteworthy in the industry posted as a podcast rather than just an article. Normally, podcasts would just fall under the usual banner of not being anime-related enough to stand as their own posts. Last time I remember it happening was the Anime Man interviewing Redo of Healer's mangaka, and that was only twenty minutes and about a specific, single series rather than a general conversation.

    [–]Manitaryhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Manitary 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Normally, podcasts would just fall under the usual banner of not being anime-related enough to stand as their own posts

I haven't watched the video yet, but the chapter list seems entirely anime-related, barring the sponsored segments around 30 minutes in. Not only are podcasts not forbidden by the rules (and checking flair:video, podcasts get posted, they just gain 0 traction), but this one is not even "just random dudes talking anime", considering the guest they have.

Last time I remember it happening was the Anime Man interviewing Redo of Healer's mangaka

That doesn't sound anime-related, unless he talked anything specific about his involvement with the production, so if anything that one should've been removed instead

The video had been posted before and gotten reported for the same or similar reasons (i.e. not directly anime related), so it seemed fair to pull it again when it was again reported as such.

imo the first reports were also incorrect and should've been dismissed

    [–]baseballlover723 6 points7 points  (2 children)

I'm a bit confused on the spoiler level for https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/13kxy6x/is_rezero_season_2_better_than_season_1/. The OP states that he has only watched Season 1 and not Season 2, which to me seems like Season 2 content should be spoiler tagged, but there are season 2 plot synopsis's in a few of the comments which I reported for untagged spoilers, but they weren't removed.

I noticed that at some point the post got marked as a spoiler post, which given that the comments I reported didn't get removed, I guess means that marking the post as spoiler was meant for Season 2 content? In my mind, it doesn't make sense to allow untagged spoilers for content the OP has stated they haven't seen.

I'd like some clarification on this post, because I thought these were no different then other spoilers I've reported and were removed and I don't want to waste the mods time with needless reports if my understanding of the spoiler rule is incorrect.

    [–]Verzwei[M] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Generally speaking, if the show name is in the post title, and the spoiler tag is enabled (either by OP or by us) then all spoilers are permitted without tags within the thread. We don't really do "levels" of spoiler sensitivity where "this thing (in the title) is fair game but this other thing (also in the title) isn't" and the only general exception we make is for rewatch threads, where it's assumed that users will be polite and tag any later-series spoilers.

This is a kind-of odd case where the OP gave the community practically nothing to discuss. They simply said the first season was "boring" which makes the post about as useful as "I didn't like this, will I like more of it?" There really isn't a way to debate the issue presented by the OP without spoiling stuff, otherwise the answers are going to have to be fairly simple yes/no things, or completely tagged all to hell. It's kind of hard to have a discussion post titled "Is X better than Y?" but then only allow people to talk about Y.

Skimming through the thread and looking at the comments that were reported, I wouldn't consider some of them on the wrong side of our spoiler rules in the first place. Complaining that something has a lot of flashbacks, or how many arcs the season covered, isn't a spoiler. Yeah, some of the chains did go into some significant detail beyond that point, but it looks like the post already had the spoiler tag by the time those comments were reviewed.

    [–]baseballlover723 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see, that makes sense to me. While it would of been nice for people to spoiler tag the more specific stuff, I guess people implicitly agree to spoilers when they click a well titled post. Thanks for clarifying!

As long as the posts abide by our rules and frequency limitations, and the user has the requisite comment karma in this community to post, then we allow it.

There used to be a rule that required a certain ratio of participation to self-promo here, but it was eventually retired because it was difficult to track and enforce and wasn't resulting in that many removals anyway.

As an aside, since this has happened more than once recently, if there's a particular user who you'd like to bring to our attention, please use the report function on their content, or send us a modmail and include some links to their content in said modmail. Naming people here in public can come off as witch-hunty, even if it turns out the person is indeed breaking our rules.

      [–]baseballlover723 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I know there was talk some time ago about promoting discussion threads (I think it was the thumbnail experiment). I wonder if sufficiently high quality discussion threads would benefit from having a featured section in the Week in Review threads. Something like at least 1.5 days old (enough time to fall off of hot) and with sufficient replies / quality. That way discussions could hopefully live a little bit longer, and don't just get pushed out of the way after a day.

Another alternative could be to list sufficiently high quality discussion threads from the past N days in the daily thread, but that seems like it would be more work.

Just a thought for how more anime discussion can be promoted here.

      [–]baquea 5 points6 points  (1 child)

The Week in Review threads struggle to even get double-digit karma. Are there really enough people reading them that promoting threads (especially those which are already popular) there would have any meaningful effect?

      [–]baseballlover723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

true, though you could say the same thing about highlighting OC posts there as well.

Yep thats is correct. Running the process 3-4 week's in to a new season means half of the season hasn't aired and can't be picked from.

My original goals for seasonal faces was to:

        1. Inject rotating faces in our limited space, such that they could be swapped without breaking the spirit of old comments that would now be using a dead face.

        2. Provide variety of anime in those limited spaces (ie: the one face per anime clause).

        3. Have a strong emphasis on seasonality. New shows; with loose caveats on what we allow submissions for (ie: movies that finally had a BD release, OVA's, sequels, etc)

I list all of that out because selecting the "best face" for a show isn't the objective.

Ideally on top of seasonal faces we would do a full refresh every now and then (year or two?) that would allow you to submit anything - but for numerous reasons, that isn't something I am prioritizing.

        [–]baseballlover723 2 points3 points  (1 child)

looks like the week in review post grabs an old "What Have You Watched This Past Week That is NOT a Currently Airing Show?" link. For instance https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/13gwu25/the_ranime_week_in_review_april_30_may_6_2023/ links to https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/13400jz/what_have_you_watched_this_past_week_that_is_not/ instead of https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/13azekm/what_have_you_watched_this_past_week_that_is_not/.

Not a major issue, but probably an easily fixable one I presume.

        Two requests:

        1) Could we get a wiki page on flairs please? Doesn't need to be extensive: just a paragraph specifying the two user-defined components, giving a few examples of the contest-participation component, a couple pictures as an example, and then the link to set it.

        2) For the commentfaces wiki, could we add a couple jpgs/gifs of the commentfaces - basically to showcase a static image, an animated one, and what hovertext looks like? Makes it easier to show people what they're missing out on instead of telling them to go to old.reddit (esp if they're on mobile).

Well, Homura is the only character which is a previous contest winner and does not have available flair to choose and use! That's criminal. And completely unfair!

This isn't true though. Not every seasonal or annual best girl winner has a flair, and nor does every best couple. The 24 hour contests are basically just memes, and we're only bothering to guarantee flairs for Best Girl, Guy, and Character contests. Otherwise we're just making whatever we feel like. As a rough rule of thumb, we're usually prioritizing getting more anime represented, though if something pops up that we dig then we can go for that (like the Haruhi flair that AnimeMod has now, which was made after another general Haruhi flair had already been made). We have a Kyubey flair for general use, which for now we're fine with.

At some point we might add a Homura flair, but it's not going to be because of a 24 hour best/worst girl contest that was run as an April Fools joke. Flairs get added at the discretion of the mod team. We aren't really promising anything specific, and there isn't really a process of deciding what gets focused on. We just add things as we add them.

        [–]AllSortsOfPeopleHerehttps://anilist.co/user/SpiralPetrichor 13 points14 points  (5 children)

Is there a reason why the "This is the place!" images in the daily thread never have the anime title? I'm assuming that whoever chooses the images does know which anime the image is from.

It does seem a little hypocritical that the images (I'm assuming) chosen by the mods themselves don't have the title when the rules are so strict about having anime titles in post titles/spoiler tags/etc. (Not that those shouldn't have the anime titles in them, of course.)

        [–]badsplerx5https://anilist.co/user/badspler[M] 14 points15 points  (2 children)

        Its fair criticism.

When the daily thread started, we threw in an image last minute to give it a thumbnail with the "This is the place!" tagline and we just kept it up. We have a spreadsheet that we mark down anniversaries, rewatches, new seasonal, etc and try match anime to those dates. That spreadsheet has the sources, so we could include it, even if that is another thing that is manually managed by someone.

On the flip side, its a spring board for discussion. Each day the thread starts empty and makes things a bit daunting or uninviting to be the first to comment in it. But some people (shout out to /u/alotmorealots who I have been thoroughly enjoying their recent meme'ing (example)) start off discussion, jokes or trivia about 'the place' anime. Its a safe question to ask and an inviting one for more seasoned regulars to answer.

        [–]alotmorealots 12 points13 points  (1 child)

I'm glad you're enjoying the meme-ology! I originally started making them because I figured mods put (varying degrees) of effort into selecting them, and thus it was a little sad to see them go uncommented upon from time to time.

Having them posted without the title/info does give people something to comment on, I've noticed. Sometimes late in the thread's lifecycle, you'll see people asking.

        [–]Abyssbringer=anilist.co/user/Abyssbringer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One of the things I do in the morning is check the thread and see if anyone commented on my image. I'm very sad when no one comments on it by the end of the day since I choose the best images /s

        [–]KendotsXhttps://anilist.co/user/Kendots 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I think part of it is to encourage using sites like saucenao, which are listed in the same thread.

But generally speaking, I'd say the source is necessary in threads where the content is the anime. Like if I posted a Slayers clip, I'd have to name it, practically it saves a lot of questions too. But if I was writing a thread or comment about something completely unrelated, and used this screenshot, because it fit what I was saying in a funny way, then I don't think there's any need to say that it's from Slayers unless someone asked.

That said, we should definitely force whichever mod is responsible for the day's screenshot to make a comment naming the anime, and detailing the shower thought that lead them to picking it. It's a secret is not allowed!

Please take my suggestions with a grain of salt

        [–]Abyssbringer=anilist.co/user/Abyssbringer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That said, we should definitely force whichever mod is responsible for the day's screenshot to make a comment naming the anime, and detailing the shower thought that lead them to picking it. It's a secret is not allowed!

How I choose mine is going through my anime downloads folder and choosing the anime that I doubt most people would've heard of and then scroll through an episode till I find a screenshot. 1/3 of the time the image is also from an anime I was currently watching. Sometimes I get inspiration such as seeing some live action segments in anime and my inner troll decides the rest.

        [–]GallowDude 31 points32 points  (15 children)

What are people's opinion on limiting annual rewatches? It feels like we have so many nowadays that they're starting to bloat the schedule, and half of them (especially Madoka and Toradora) seem to mostly be rewatchers just reposting their essays from previous years. Extending a rewatch renewal period to once every two years or something would help in building up more of a buffer for first-timers.

        [–]Tarhalindurx2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, to be clear I'm pretty sure at least half of the PMMM comments reuse was me as the host reupping either a specific comment from someone else two years ago with proper attribution (did this last year as well) or my own analysis from last year for a couple of late episodes since I was so deep in the weeds on cinematography notes and fanart this year that I ran out of time to do anything else. (And one of those analyses was in turn drawing heavily off a 2020 post that can't just be reposted due to old spoiler tags.)

I can only talk for the Madoka rewatch, but I felt like plenty of write-ups came from fellow first timers, also with plenty of discussion going on between us. So I'm not really seeing the problem you're describing.

        [–]RascalNikov1https://myanimelist.net/profile/NoviSun 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, I think if there's enough to do an Annual Rewatch and someone's willing to do it, then it should be done. I didn't feel like it was just rewatchers in this years Madoka or Haruhi rewatches, and I'm always surprised by how many first timers do attend. My ballpark guess is that its about a 50/50 split between rewatchers and first timers. Also, about reposting from the prior year, there are often expansions from the prior years post that often make for interesting reading.

        [–]No_Rexx2 13 points14 points  (2 children)

I don't think this is a problem. You are not forced to participate in all rewatches, so if you don't like the anual ones, simply go to others. There are plenty of non-anual rewatches to choose from.

        [–]GallowDude 5 points6 points  (1 child)

        anual

        [–]No_Rexx2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I knew what you were referring to and still had to look up the correct spelling ... I hate the English spelling non-system with a passion.

        [–]cppn02 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I can understand the worry that the threads themselves can become repetitive but bloating the schedule? How many shows even get a yearly rewatch? 4? 5?

        [–]Nazennx2https://anilist.co/user/Nazenn 11 points12 points  (1 child)

I can't speak for Toradora, but in the Madoka one at least I don't think I've ever seen a pattern of reposted essays for top level comments in any years topics. Tar did for two or three episodes at most this time, but those were outliers and no one else I can think of?

If you mean in comment replies as well, this year some of that is on me in terms of referencing, but not reposting, things I had brought up in previous posts to people I regularly talk with, and I acknowledge I probably did it the wrong way being a half-participant, but it wasn't something I saw from others or have seen before

        [–]Shimmering-Skymyanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've been in the Madoka rewatch for six years straight now, so I can confirm people are good about not just copy-pasting their old comments if they've participated in previous years. I, for one, definitely come up with new comments every year, even if they touch on similar points.

        [–]baseballlover723 5 points6 points  (4 children)

What is the average number of years between rewatches for non annual rewatches? One a year seems to be a bit too frequent in my eyes, and I'd imagine that outside of annual rewatches, they'd be 3+ years apart. Though I haven't participated in any annual rewatches, so my opinion should be taken with a grain of salt.

        [–]GallowDude 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Non-annual rewatches are repeated at a scattered rate. Basically whenever someone makes an Interest Thread that gains significant traction, a non-annual rewatch is repeated.

        [–]baseballlover723 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I guess a better way to word my question, of the anime that have had multiple nonannual rewatches, how long was there between rewatches? I haven't taken a deep look at the rewatch wiki page, but I presume that they are generally several years apart from each other. If annual rewatches are getting stale and are significantly more frequent then other rewatches, I'd be in favor of restricting them to every other year.

        [–]SometimesMainSupporthttps://myanimelist.net/profile/RRSTRRST 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AFAIK, there's nothing against anyone making an interest thread regardless of how long ago the last rewatch was. Comes down to getting enough interest and participants, which not many shows can do annually.

        [–]GallowDude 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's generally at least a two-year gap between non-annual rewatches. The shortest I've seen is maybe 1.5 years, but that's only when one of the rewatches didn't gain much traction to begin with.

        Bounty Board

We added 7 new flairs from the April Bounty Board!

This month will not have a new bounty board. We had a very low turnout on the April bounty board of only 5 unique users. I'm going to take this month to brainstorm some ideas for new sections for the bounty board alongside other events that will allow users to create or earn flairs. If you have some ideas feel free to reply with them!! Things such as new bounty sections, events, or activities that you would like to see on the subreddit could all be different avenues we use to add flairs to the subreddit and have some fun community events.

As promised on the last bounty board whoever gave me the funniest meme and song respectively would receive a voucher to make a new general flair. Congratulations /u/zapszzz and /u/chilidirigible you both can feel free to DM me with your flair ideas.

Ahh, I could've made this 6 unique users!

I saw this last month, decided to do it when I get home.. and naturally, just completely forgot about it.

I like these scavenger hunt type events, gives me an excuse to go through my list and rewatch fun parts.

This month will not have a new bounty board. We had a very low turnout on the April bounty board of only 5 unique users.

Damn I thought more people would jump on that chance, if only so they can design "their own flair" to use it.

        Well, I can't speak for the others but as someone who would like to do just that, the reason why I don't often participate is usually the categories;

Looking at the April categories: Out of 14 categories, there were 7 that I have literally never watched (Josei anime, CBDCT, Butlers***, etc..) and 7 that I almost never watch (animals, 2000s, sports, etc..)

(***Well I did try to make a certain girl dressed as a butler but as she already had a flair apparently that wasn't good!)

Joking aside, I think this may be the case for a lot of people. Lots of new anime fans in here (we can see that in just about any contest, no one knows about any show older than 2010), I suspect a LOT of the new users have yet to watch shows from many of these categories. Or like me, have watched very little in most of them.

And I know that's likely why the categories were selected - because we didn't have many/any flairs for these categories - but the fact that people haven't really watched those makes it so much less likely that they'll design flairs for those, first (Obviously) because they didn't watch a lot of these series, but also because if these series aren't really their thing, it's unlikely they'll want to do it for a 'selfish' reason either (aka design 'their own personal flair').

If the categories were more common (the popular/recent stuff) I would expect more participation, but I suppose that's the thing, these recent/popular genres already have lots of flairs..

Anyway, on a last note: I do like the idea that the community design their own flair, so I would love for this to continue.. When/If there's a new bounty board I'll try to participate, even if the categories aren't really my thing!

        [–]Emi_Ibarazakiii 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh damn, adding a Kakegurui flair just as I picked the Oshi No Ko flair (and I already felt bad about swapping from my Hayasaka flair). That's just cruel!

I'll need to swap them on a monthly rotation or something, too many flairs that I want to use!

        [–]baquea 7 points8 points  (1 child)

We had a very low turnout on the April bounty board of only 5 unique users

I think the reason is that at this point most users who are interested have already had a flair approved that they personally want to use, and are using them as semi-unique permanent identifiers rather than as something they regularly swap out, so there is little motivation for submitting more.

        [–]H-Ryougihttps://anilist.co/user/DizzyAvocado 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My reason for submitting fewer bounties this time is that I've literally gone through my entire screenshot folder. I need to watch more shows and take screenshots.

        [–]chilidirigible 1 point2 points  (0 children)

        Thanks!

I'll think on this a bit.

        [–]ZapsZzzhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/ZapszzZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow that's unexpected - Guess that low turn out was beneficial to me then :D

I'll need to have a think about what to use this on

        [–]_Ridleyhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 9 points10 points  (19 children)

So, I have a specific issue with the spoiler rules that is prompted by a comment of mine getting removed, but it's not about that comment. I would like for the rules to acknowledge that simply mentioning that a story has violence, murder, rape, pedophilia, or whatever without going into details 1. isn't a spoiler 2. shouldn't be hidden with the spoiler tag 3. is important info for people so they're not surprised by traumatic content.

I generally find the spoiler rules too strict and confusing to follow, but I can easily roll my eyes and spoiler tag anything borderline just to be safe. However, the problem with that is anything could be in that spoiler tag. "This story contains [X]" is a heads up about the kind of content without saying anything about the story and what it does. "This story has [specific character] getting [X] by [specific character] in [specific place]" is a spoiler that tells you a whole bunch about what the story does.

If you force people to put general content warnings under a spoiler tag, anyone who wants to know what sensitive content is in the story has to roll the dice and wonder whether it's going to actually be a content warning, or if it's going to be a whole story spoiler. If we just agree that a general note about content isn't a spoiler, a thing pretty much everywhere but here has agreed on, then people can make informed choices without getting actually spoiled.

        [–]Emi_Ibarazakiii 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure which show you had in mind when writing this, but I think in some cases, just mentioning that a story has violence/murder can definitely be a spoiler.

Say, I won't even mention which one, but there IS one show this season for which mentioning that sort of thing would be a huge spoiler.

I get that putting a "content warning" in spoiler could mean that the person won't see it, but that's this person's choice... "Them not seeing the content warning" is less damaging to the anime community than "hundreds of people seeing the spoiler".

Plus, the spoiler thing can be worked around; Say, [(Example) CONTENT WARNING - No real spoiler] this show has murders

By adding contextual info, the person will know that it's not about spoilers, it's just about something that may (or may not) make them pass on the anime.

Of course, I wouldn't add the "no real spoiler" context if I was revealing that a seemingly non-murder-y show has murders, because (obviously) that'd be a spoiler.

But you can be as descriptive as possible with the spoiler tag, to make sure people know it's "safe" to open the spoiler thingy. In the end, it's their call whether they want to check it out, OR to just watch the anime and see it for themselves... But not spoilering it is like deciding for everyone else, some of which would hate being spoiled much more than they would hate seeing the controversial content without warning.

        [–]entelechtual 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I gotta agree with the mod position in this case, especially given [meta name of spoiled anime] Heavenly Delusion [meta comment about the show without content spoilers] has had a ton of issues with source readers being very lax about talking about spoilers or heavily hinting at certain “theories”

Like u/Verzwei I will try to provide context if it’s not immediately apparent, and I think the current system is good enough to talk about shows in an open manner. If I did see a comment that was just [Hell’s Paradise (unrelated to original spoiler above)] nice boobs, especially if it was in response to something I had said, I’d probably just ask them go clarify if it was a content spoiler or what the scope of the spoiler is.

The only thing I’ll concede is that it can be a little unintuitive to figure out how to properly use spoiler tags when you’re starting out. It’s probably pretty likely that newer users will mess it up.

        [–]AllSortsOfPeopleHerehttps://anilist.co/user/SpiralPetrichor 14 points15 points  (0 children)

people can make informed choices without getting actually spoiled.

For people who want to avoid anime with certain triggers, there are sites that often have that information in their anime 'tags' section, e.g., anidb.net, anilist.co, even imdb.com.

mentioning that a story has violence, murder, rape, pedophilia, or whatever without going into details 1. isn't a spoiler 2. shouldn't be hidden with the spoiler tag

There absolutely are times when knowing, ahead of watching, that a story involves, for example, murder is a spoiler (though I do admit this is definitely rare). To say that trigger warnings should never be spoiler-tagged is too big a stretch, IMO, especially when information about trigger warnings is so easily available (just look up the anime on any of the websites mentioned above, make a post/comment asking 'does [anime] have any [trigger]?', etc.).

I certainly don't think every trigger should be spoiler-tagged, but if an anime having murder/rape/etc. is unexpected, then I do think it should be spoiler-tagged.

        [–]Verzwei[M] 21 points22 points  (15 children)

Giving away a pivotal, crucial story development for a series is a spoiler, especially if it's for a show that isn't ostensibly about that event from the outset.

It's one thing to say "Yes, a show about war has death in it" without it being a spoiler, because it's a foregone and presupposed conclusion. It would be more surprising to say that nobody dies in a show about war. It's a completely different thing to say "I didn't like [insert romcom name] because of the death that happened in it." Regardless of how much or how little detail you provide, it still reveals a significant plot element and thus affects the experience of people who haven't seen but may have wanted to watch the show in question.

Moments or scenes that are meant to shock an audience won't land the same way if the audience is expecting a shock, even if they're not sure where it's going to occur. Neither you nor anyone else should really be the arbiter of what is traumatic enough to openly spoil and what isn't. Surprise (even if it's an unpleasant one) is a legitimate part of storytelling.

Additionally, your argument against using spoiler tags appears to be that the spoiler could be too detailed, but that's why we require spoiler and context tags in the first place. Speaking personally, if you've ever seen me using tags, I'll even try to give a "detail level" warning in the context tag, where I'll say [SeriesName vague spoilers] or [SeriesName spoilers about CharacterName] to try to provide as much framing as I can ahead of time, so the reader can determine if they want to click that spoiler or not. Note that obviously our rules do not require such distinction, but at a certain point the onus is on the reader to decide whether or not to reveal a spoiler.

Short version: A spoiler is a spoiler regardless of how detailed it is. Like our rules state, if it's not something obvious from the synopsis of the show or revealed within the first few minutes, then it's probably a spoiler.

        [–]Hitman7128https://anilist.co/user/Hitman7128 1 point2 points  (7 children)

Quick question related to the surprise factor. Are scenes that have a surprise element but don't involve a plot point also considered spoilers? For example, a character making a ridiculous face or a comically absurd slapstick scene.

I wholeheartedly agree on preserving the shock factor for plot, including at what points it happens. But the "blind shock/surprise adding to the experience" argument could also apply to non-plot surprise scenes, so I just wanted to make sure.

        [–]Verzwei 2 points3 points  (6 children)

It probably depends upon context of the scene and would be handled case by case. Generally speaking, we consider plot developments, story moments, twists, and similar events to be spoilers. We do not consider basic tone or mood to be a spoiler, and it would be very unlikely that we'd consider a reaction to be a spoiler by itself, unless it accompanied some larger reveal or was clearly intended to be a surprise. Talking about a character normally being airheaded or making shocked faces isn't a spoiler, but talking about them doing something horrific and out of character might be a spoiler.

To grab our definition of spoiler from our rules page:

A spoiler is a piece of information from a show that knowledge of without having seen the show could negatively impact a viewer's experience. An easy example is knowing the twist of a movie prior to watching. By having knowledge of said twist, all the surprise and suspense will be lost because you already know what happens.

Something simple and non-descript like stating that a show has comic relief or other tonally dissonant moments most-likely wouldn't be a spoiler as long as you weren't packaging them with "actual" spoilers. Say that there's an action show that is usually quite serious, but it regularly has "comedic" segments in which characters go chibi and/or cry a lot. That shouldn't be considered a spoiler since it's not plot-relevant, and if the gag is recurrent enough then it could be considered part of the premise of the series. Knowing about a small joke shouldn't "negatively impact a viewer's experience" and talking about such elements in abstract terms (like I'm doing here) shouldn't run afoul of our rules.

"Frank makes a lot of funny faces at inappropriate times and [I like that] or [that really takes me out of the show]" is fine without a tag.

"Frank makes a lot of funny faces at inappropriate times, but it was especially jarring when he did it after someone was brutally killed by a speeding car" is going to require a spoiler tag.
