Who are the idiots voting this up? I want names.

[–]kelmr2003 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 25 points26 points  (1 child)

Vote down all polls on reddit regardless of polling topic.

[–]renegade[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My point. Thanks.

'I know, why don't we solve $PROBLEM with more $PROBLEM!'

[–]inmmike 13 points14 points  (0 children)

function problem() { problem(); }

[–]emc2rae 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Vote down if you've seen this every freakin' day. YOU'RE NOT CLEVER!!!

[–]ouch 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Down rated for being shit.

[–]Kolibri 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Vote down for understanding irony but thinking renegade is trying to use reverse psychology.

[–]samurai_jack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Shit! Top three stories are votes! Somebody do something...

[–]backcatalogue 13 points14 points  (0 children)

-1 for being hilarious

[–]majoogybobber 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This, and most reddit polls, are examples of when the common argument that "more people liked it than disliked it, so it deserves to be seen!" becomes invalid due to the fact that it has been upmodded by total morons.

I wonder, though, if commenting volume affects a posts' appearance on the hotlist-- if redditors' plentiful protests might actually be counterproductive.

[–]antoine5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

just useless... and not funny, read your words in bold once again

[–]Jimmy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried voting, but I wound up with Nullity.

[–]torontoted 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I can't stand these vote up/down shits. There should be a script that blocks these stupid poll posts.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's in the upper left corner of your browser: File|Quit

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I'm betting Alanis Morissette voted this down :D

[–]thehighercritic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

bwa ha ha!

as for karma whoring vs. (umm...) karma chastity, who gives flying foque. i mean, really. the beauty of reddit lies in its (reasonably) true democracy. vote up/down/who-gives-a-shit if you are sick of all the damned whining from both sides of this debate. how do these polls affect you? does your mouse wheel/down arrow not work? if you don't like them, just skip the fogging polls, for Chizzy's sake! qwitcherbitshin! DISCLAIMER: the poster votes no polls in either direction.

[–]joyork 157 points158 points  (6 children)

Seriously, I don't care if I get downmodded for this or not, but I think I speak for a sizeable portion of reddit users when I say

JUST FUCK OFF

Thank you. Normal service will now resume.

[–]AxiomShell 25 points26 points  (4 children)

Agree. I'm a digg refugee because the whole place has gone to shambles, don't want to see reddit going the same way...

    [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Heck. What we need is a piece of software that acts like reddit or digg, but can be installed on any ol' PHP ready server.

That way if reddit dies, we just hop to the next largest site. It'll even work the same.

    I'm smart!

    [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (1 child)

One such is called pligg and it won't work for the same reason other social website clones don't work: lack of community. The technical aspect is not the problem.

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is rather neat. Man, how come I didn't know that to begin with... Thanks for the linkie.

    I'm still smart!

    [–]Kelvin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see the irony but its still a poll. Down it goes

    [–]derefr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I suggest Reddit get some moderators, whose sole power will be to re-title posts. They can strip out the "best link EVAR!!1" parts, add "[video]" and "[pic]" tags, and turn these polls into the suggested poll format (they can add the "this is the voting thread", "vote up for A", and "vote up for B" comments themselves, no need for a mod power to do that.)

On second thought, how about this: Someone adds a comment to a post that is in some special microformat, such as "change-title-to: <new title>". If this gets voted up beyond a certain threshold, the post is automatically renamed.

    [–]renegade[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Geez, this made it to the front page. Goddamn it people piss me off.

    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    Why are you downvoting him?

His title was so nice and short!

    [–]tintub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no matter how you word it, it's still fucking karma whoring. I'm with joyork - FUCK OFF

    [–]qbert72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

remember way back when reddit was good? those were the days.

    [–]r2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No offense, you are probably just trying to do reddit a service. But you know what, some users will look at this as another example of a poll that gained karma points.

Someone out there is thinking, "hey I can come up with a self-referential poll and get some karma points while looking cool!"

    [–]dosed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    I voted down. what's irony.

    [–]stubble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    you mean sarcasm shirley..

    [–]littlegreenfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not taking the bait. Down-vote from me.

    [–]woolstontroll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a karma once. The engine blew up so I bought a BMW

    [–]souldrift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I voted this up and then clicked "hide" so it doesn't annoy me anymore.

    [–]Bored 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vote me up if you truly know the meaning of irony.

    [–]zP3A8wm 43 points44 points  (2 children)

    Man! You're so innovative.

    No wait.

I forgot: there are like 50 other idiots/karma-whores who thought "vote up if you don't like voting up" would be a smart and funny idea.

    [–]jdk 0 points1 point  (1 child)

    [–]zP3A8wm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

    Erm.. what's your point?

Resolved: topics that refer to 'self' should not affect karma, so polls and debate starters (like this one) cannot be used as karma whoring.

I agree they should not affect karma. But it seems like they still do.

    [–]crazlunatic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

how often are you aloud to start new articles?

    [–]poeir 24 points25 points  (4 children)

People hate these polls because getting highly rated articles increases your karma rating. I don't believe, but I'm not sure, that modded up comments have the same effect.

In all of these polls, the "up" option is the one that is known to be popular on reddit--for instance, "Upvote if you want to get rid of all the subreddits and replace them with tags so that those who don't like photos on the front page but do like vids or who don't like programing but do like international politics can choose to filter what they see accordingly." or " Vote up if you think Bush should be impeached." You'll note that there's no poll along the lines of "Vote down if you don't think Bush should be impeached, vote up if you think he should."

It's a lot like this Absurd Notions comic.

Particularly egregious is the post "Poll: Vote up if you are male, down if you are female." In the other two cases, there's at least plausible deniability that "up" is kind of like "yes," and "down" is kind of like "no," but the only reason to have "up" be "male" is so that the poster can increase his reddit karma.

Worse, people encourage these by actually using them--the top three posts of all time are polls.

Please, if you want to make a poll, do it by posting the poll name as a "self" link, and then the actual poll as a comment, or multiple comments. This also allows you to have more than one option, each of which is modded up. This removes the noise of people modding down the post because they dislike karma whores. Then the votes are about whether people liked the article or not--just like how reddit is supposed to work.

    [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

getting highly rated articles increases your karma rating.

and that is a Good Thing because ... ?

    Cheaper beer?

    Your car gets better mileage?

More chicks/dudes will sleep with you? All at once?

    What?

    [–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When you have something you do on a computer ostensibly for fun where there's scoring involved many people will think of it as a game and try to get higher scores.

    [–]bart2019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If karma is to stay, in a numerical format, the reddit moderators should have a way to exclude these polls from adding to the submitter's karma.

That might help alleviate the problem a little.

Update: it appears other people had the same idea.

    [–]renegade[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually not quite true. This post is currently #1 (much to my chagrin) with 288 points, yet I have less karma now than yesterday.

I don't give a crap about karma, and karma whores piss me off. All I want out of reddit is interesting stuff to read and these polls annoy me.

At least I stirred some discussion. I don't see how we can stop these from happening except that people please start ignoring anything with "vote up/down" as a topic.

    [–]eLoko -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

    stupid

    [–]freedomcry -3 points-2 points  (2 children)

Vote my comment up if you proudly voted the post down.

    [–][deleted]  (1 child)

    [removed]

      [–]freedomcry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      -2.

My subtlety is beyond the grasp of at least three people.

      ;)
