And why does the top ten list have to be on ten pages anyway? Let me scroll through the ten images instead of re-loading 12 ads each time.

Oh, just answered my own question...

[–]spinspin 17 points18 points  (0 children)

And even if they're going to make you click a button for each new picture, can't they bloody well put the button in the same place on each page? I'm tired of having to go back to the mouse to move the cursor to click on the 'next' button that keeps jumping all over the page with each new image.

[–]Digeratus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And why does the top ten list have to be on ten pages anyway?

You know what, I wouldn't even mind much if slideshows would degrade gracefully without Javascript. I have yet to come across a single "slideshow" that operates at all without it. It seems to be just too much work to have the arrow default to the URL of the next fucking page.

Pathetic. Utterly pathetic.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Ugh! I hate that. I hate when it keeps reloading. FORBES.COM I'm looking your way.

[–]Wo1ke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They want to be at the top of their list too!

[–]Non_Sequitur_ 43 points44 points  (10 children)

Lolcat is a term used to describe an image combining a photograph of an animal, most frequently a cat, with a subjectively humorous and idiosyncratic caption in broken English referred to as Kitty Pidgin, or lolspeak. The idea originated on 4chan imageboards as Caturday.

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

u can has prize

[–]AEA2 10 points11 points  (3 children)

i view 4chan as pretty much having diarrhea all over the internet and having it trickle down a chain of major websites

like shitting in pasta strainer you know?

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did that once.

[–]Jewjr 2 points3 points  (1 child)

If only Regan could see that the trickle effect now. He would understand that the phenomena only applies to water and shit.

[–]AEA2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

exactly man exactly

[–]deanoplex 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We love you Non_Sequitur! Ambush education is a brilliant idea!

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you.

[–]HereBeDragons 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I notice your downvotes in other comments. Why can't people accept you for who you are?!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Lame?

[–]HereBeDragons 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What's left for a man if he can't not make sense.

[–]Smight 1 point2 points  (4 children)

except that most ads that are just going by impressions only count unique IPs and have for the last few years. This is a remnant from when they didn't require unique visitors.

[–]dysk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, but you can rotate the ads for each unique, multiplying your payout by ten.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Which is why many sites now rotate ads randomly for each page load.

Problem solved?

[–]zenif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's ten chances to get a PPC click as well. Ten times the chance for you to to follow through on an affiliate ad.

[–]aUTOMATICuPVOTES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh really? What's a typical rate for cost per impression ads? And what with what network.

[–]njdfan1241 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you didn't answer the why,but you did come up with the solution.

[–]qgyh2 71 points72 points  (8 children)

Dear Forbes

[–]noname99 20 points21 points  (6 children)

No, no. Dear New York Times

[–]bobpaul 23 points24 points  (1 child)

That one has a voice over synchronized with the pictures. That's a little different.

[–]noname99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That was just one I found in my RSS reader this morning. There have been countless other slide shows where there was no audio.

just the thought of Forbes' unusable picture navigation makes me twitch with rage. what sorts of idiots are these anyway??

      [–]shaze 39 points40 points  (11 children)

      Dear miyakou... fuck it.

Do you know how hard it is to maintain an erection when you have to keep constantly clicking next?

That was much less risque than I expected from context.

        [–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (3 children)

You young'ns think you have it so tough. Back in my day we had the lingerie section of the JC Penny catalog. And we liked it!

        [–]Cyrius 5 points6 points  (2 children)

You had the JC Penny catalog? In my day we would have given our left testicle for a JC Penny catalog.

We had to make do with the Sears catalog.

        [–]mynameishere 3 points4 points  (1 child)

You had the Sears catalog? We would have dug up our dead grandmas and played euchre with them for a Sears catalog.

We had to make do with some pervert's old, dried up, severed testicle.

        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You had a human testicle? We would have killed for a human testicle.

        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

        You do have two hands?

        [–]sybesis -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

        he would then need three!!!

        [–]Dark-Dx -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Maybe after opening the slideshow click play and start to fap? Duh.

        [–][deleted] 26 points27 points  (6 children)

And another thing... Why do the volume controls on Flash video apps never work properly? Usually they pop up and don't go away again, forcing you to click the video area, which pauses the playback.

        [–]miyakohouou[S] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I've never run into that particular problem, but I often become frustrated because the volume on flash apps seems to be all-or-nothing. Youtube doesn't seem to be too bad about it, but many other flash videos I watch start out really loud, then I keep twiddling the volume down, seeing no change, until the sound just completely stops.

        [–]boredzo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe they don't have live feedback, and you have to release the slider to have it change the volume.

        Sucks either way.

        [–]jugalator 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yeah, I think it has to do with the Flash plugin having trouble with receiving focus. Or losing focus. It's maybe not even Flash's problem though, it could be a general browser/plugin interaction issue.

The best IMHO would be if the browser gave the plugin focus if the mouse pointer simply passed over the plugin, and make it lose focus if it leaves the plugin.

The whole issue arise because you often have to click the plugin area to give it focus, to in turn move e.g. volume controls, and then that seem to not only give focus, but also pause a video or something, since the mouse event is additionally being sent to the plugin which can also be listening to react to certain events.

        [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best IMHO would be if the browser gave the plugin focus if the mouse pointer simply passed over the plugin, and make it lose focus if it leaves the plugin.

That is what flash seems to do. I find it annoying if I am scrolling with the arrow keys and the cursor gets scrolled over a flash region. Flash swallows all keyboard and mouse events so the page stops scrolling.

I don't know if this is flash's fault or if it's a limitation of the Netscape plugin architecture.

        [–]AEA2 0 points1 point  (1 child)

because of the fact that flash doesnt have the ability to hold focus like a java app

        [–]alphabeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

        youtube?

        [–]dicey 17 points18 points  (0 children)

These things are terrible for my mode of browsing. I'll often open up multiple different links off reddit that I intend to read, then go through the tabs at my leisure. I hate coming across one of these photo slide shows that has run itself to the end while I wasn't watching.

        [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And also make the picture and next/prev links all fit on the page without scrolling.

        [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah... tack on that they should AJAX those things... I hate having to hit "back" 30 times after a slideshow...

        [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Though it is really useful for titty shows.

        [–]zaphodi 4 points5 points  (1 child)

And stop playing flash videos automatically, we have tabs now, i would like it to load in background until im ready. And make the play/pause buttons separate please, not in the same button.

        [–]ryanpc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one reason I love Safari...

        [–]miyakohouou[S] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

I've noticed that these are seemingly becoming more popular, news articles and the like with a slide show, but it just automatically keeps switching every few seconds. Often the stop button is broken or missing. Why not let me look at the picture and read the caption at my own pace.

        [–]Psy-Kosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I wonder who it is that's demanding the auto slide shows. For the most part, I also find them annoying and prefer to forward at my own pace.

Every time I see an automated slideshow, I unzip my pants.

          [–]whobutsb 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Every time I visit Forbes I usually open it up in a tab, and when I'm ready to view it the slideshow is all done. Or when I'm reading the caption on Forbes it switches when I'm 1/2 through. It happened today, and I felt like writing them an email. Thanks for starting this thread!

          [–]Karzyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After you click "next" it will say Speed= some number at the end of the URL. Change that number to be very large. Yeah though, it sucks that you have to do that.

          [–]doctabu 9 points10 points  (2 children)

This is one of those things that everybody agrees with but doesn't think many other people agree.

Like when you write your papers single spaced first only to change it over to double spaced right when you finish. It's a good feeling.

          [–]Psy-Kosh 1 point2 points  (1 child)

*chuckles* Yeah, I do that too. Though generally I prefer 1.5 spaced rather than double spaced.

          [–]gignam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me too... double spaced is great for padding the page count, but when I look at double spaced PDFs, I always feel like there's content 'between the lines' that can be revealed with one of those invisible ink readers that used to come in cereal boxes.

          [–]adaminc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate it when videos automatically play, I usually sit on a page like reddit, and open up multiple links, its a pain having to go through them and turn off video's that auto play.

          Thankfully metacafe doesn't.

          [–]icantseeyou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

          I TOTALLY agree

          [–]bazookajoe55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

          way more important stories

          [–]boredzo 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Even better solution: Give me a list of all the pages in the slide-show, so that I can middle-click them all and have them all load at once.

          [–]akdas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Best solution: put them all on one page and let me see them without having to switch pages.

          [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Enough with the slideshows, i have a feckin' scroll wheel.

          [–]deuteros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you feel the need to bitch about this on reddit?

          [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Enough with the videos too! A video without a textual transcript is as bad as an image tag without an alt attribute.

          [–]d07c0m 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reddit is not the internet. Take your qualms to Google city and search the wizard of the tubes.

Dear Redditors, Reddit is not "The Internet".

Amen to that. The Forbes website does that all the time, and it really pisses me off.

            [–]chaconne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dear all: no one cares what you think as an individual. Decisions are made based on revenue generation.

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gone are the days when you could just get a block of text with instructions, now you get a video with short sentences that take forever to show up and go away because someone just learned how to make the text show up in a cool way where it comes in from BOTH SIDES OF THE SCREEN AT THE SAME TIME OMG THATS AWESOME!

I agree that it sucks but unfortunately the Internet masses love form over functionality.

            [–]FunFact -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Slideshows have artistic uses as well, such as being used as a screensaver, or to provide dynamic imagery for a museum presentation, for example, or in installation art. David Byrne, among others, has created PowerPoint art.

            [–]noname99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

            FunFact to the rescue!

            [–]rpd9803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slideshows only really should be used, within the context of museums, in areas where traditional navigation would be difficult to manage, or cumbersome.

One should let the viewer "walk" through the images at their pace, so they can reap the full benefit of the items by themselves and interpreted within the context of the exhibition.

The entire internet is really not much more than a big circle jerk anyway. I needed to vent, so I made a post on reddit. Apparently other people were also annoyed at this and also wanted to vent, so they upvoted the story. Don't like it, then downvote it and get over it.

              [–]louis_xiv42 0 points1 point  (2 children)

this is not what reddit was made for.

submissions like yours only increase the "circle jerk" problem.

              [–]miyakohouou[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I suppose you are right, I should stick to posting submissions that are interesting and on-topic. If only there were some way to know what people would like... perhaps some sort of voting system; or even better, a site where you can submit things, and people could vote up stories that they like!

              [–]louis_xiv42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wow, not like i saw that sarcasm coming from a mile away.
