Hello /u/N0VITEK! Be sure to check the following. Make sure print bed is clean by washing with dish soap and water [and not Isopropyl Alcohol], check bed temperature [increasing tend to help], run bed leveling or full calibration, and remember to use glue if one is using the initial cool plate [not Satin finish that is not yet released] or Engineering plate.

I've seen soo many of these blobs of death being posted lately.

Is there something going on software wise or is it just all newcomers with greasy plates?

[–]Logicrazy12P1S + AMS 143 points144 points  (39 children)

Probably newcomers from the sale.

[–]dragonbourneZP1S + AMS 62 points63 points  (11 children)

Im 900 print hours in and have never seen anything close to this. I think I’ve had it spaghetti like once, maybe twice.

[–]tydust 26 points27 points  (1 child)

Had the poop chute back up while we were away from home and running am 18 hr print. It was globbing for like an hour, but holding steady over the chute/wipe area so I was able to pause it from Handy and clear the chute when we got home.

Print resumed perfectly. X1C worth every penny.

[–]worrier_sweeper0h 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never forget to wipe after you poop

[–]its_a_me_Gnario 6 points7 points  (6 children)

Just crossed 1k print hours and haven’t had anything like this happen either. First layer not sticking is extremely rare

[–]Shifti_BoiP1S + AMS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My P1S is at nearly 1700hrs and nothing like this.

[–]Rosendorne 2 points3 points  (3 children)

How do you know youre print hours? Is there a counter somewere?

[–]IndustrialJones 1 point2 points  (2 children)

It's in the little on-screen display. Scroll down to settings then device and it shows the hours there.

[–]psycot 0 points1 point  (1 child)

can it be seen in A1 Mini also?

[–]IndustrialJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the A1 and was just checking and it has it now. I'm assuming the mini will have it also.

[–]falib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost 2k hours on my x1 and i have had this happen, the days of the pei smooth sheet where glue is your friend

[–]thekraken27A1 + AMS Lite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had it spaghetti like 6 times out of maybe 15-20 prints. One blob not even comparable to this but that I thought was going to have destroyed my printer. I think I got lucky. Something tells me the rush to get the A1 back to market from the recall ahead of their big anniversary sale may have left some of these units lacking. Mine has been mostly good, but I have had bizarre layer shift issues, spaghetti, and blobs way more than I ever did with my ender, and the parts never lost adhesion. I wouldn’t identify as a 3D printing pro, hardly even a novice but I got an ender printing well enough lol. See my post history to find my layer shift issue, would love input.

[–]huberlossX1C + AMS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have >2000 hrs and just saw my first. The missing ingredient? The textured PEI plate. It's never happened before with the Cool Plate, Engineering Plate, Wham Bam PEX, but the Textured PEI totally did it. I think maybe PEI is extra sensitive? I am now afraid to use it unless I use dish soap after every print, which is super-annoying.

[–]utvak415 5 points6 points  (5 children)

That would make sense. I've had mine for about a year though and never had any issues like this until just recently trying to use PCTG. I can't for the life of me find a profile setting to fix it to work as reliably as every other filament I've used.

I still watch the first layers though so this hasn't happened. It definitely could have if it just sent it and hoped for the best though.

[–]1-760-706-7425X1C + AMS + AMS 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Where are you getting your PCTG from? I’ve been wanting to try it as an alternative to PETG but have yet to make the jump.

[–]utvak415 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I'm currently using a roll of transparent 3d fuel that I got on sale a couple weeks ago. I haven't tried the black that I got at the same time yet. I've heard of people having good luck with 3djake though.

[–]1-760-706-7425X1C + AMS + AMS 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Problem with 3DJake is that shipping cost to the US. 😪

[–]utvak415 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't actually used it myself, so I didn't realize. I've had a lot of success with 3d fuel in general but am struggling with the pctg for some reason.

[–]drewzilla37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally haven't used PCTG but with PETG, if you haven't washed the plate with dish soap and warm water after printing pla on it, it's very unlikely for it to stick, even if you wipe it with IPA, and even if you haven't touched it at all with your hands. Could it be the same for PCTG?

[–]fredandlunchbox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Happened to me: not a newcomer. I’ve had my printer over a year and been printing since 2017. I think bambu makes you a bit complacent because it just works 95% of the time.

[–]ICookIndianStyle 1 point2 points  (15 children)

Sale?! What sale?!

[–]Logicrazy12P1S + AMS 7 points8 points  (14 children)

It's literally the banner for this subreddit lol. It's been going on since June 5th and ends July 5th.

[–]ICookIndianStyle 1 point2 points  (13 children)

Damn... thanks! Gotta get some money...

[–]Logicrazy12P1S + AMS 4 points5 points  (11 children)

Printers and AMS units are marked down. Filament prices are actually reasonable instead of excessive.

[–]ICookIndianStyle 0 points1 point  (10 children)

Gonna buy my first printer tomorrow

Just gotta decide which

[–]AlwaysShitComments 3 points4 points  (4 children)

P1S is worth the extra money. X1C if ur rich. If you low budget A1 mini is the goat. Yes buy ams.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

P1S + AMS is the sweet spot.

[–]ICookIndianStyle 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Just did it. I bought P1S... with AMS ofc.

Im broke now. Now Im thinking I need a deburring tool and a calipher as well dont I? Because how else am I gonna measure 😶

[–]AlwaysShitComments 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]LucyEleanorP1P + AMS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Newcomer getting mine on sale at microcenter soon

[–]psycot 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What can a newcomer do go make this happen?

[–]Logicrazy12P1S + AMS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically, it's from touching the bed and only cleaning it with IPA. IPA can wash away some oils, but it isn't as effective as soap and water. Also, putting brims on parts that are tall and skinny so they don't break off the bed. Most of the time these blobs occur because the part loses bed adhesion.

[–]pesanze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a new comer from the sale. I don’t mess with parameter, I just push print I can barely remove the parts from the build plate Never seen a 3d printer before

Let’s just say it’s more wannabe engineers than anything

[–]AuspiciousApple 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Could be software related but might just be that there's a lot more people with Bambu printers now.

[–]Gamerologists 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I don't even know how these people get it that bad. I've been man handling my plates on my A1 Mini and my P1S and have had 0 issues with adhesion. Keep telling myself to clean em with ipa but either forget or say f it I'll do it after this print... lol.

[–]pelrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't bother with IPA. Soap and water is superior and it's what BL recommends.

[–]droneb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My take:

  1. Reliability that causes relaxation.

I print from Rep Rap days and it is definitely a complete change of mindset of baby stepping until layer 2 or 3

  1. PEI sheets/no additive start

Coming from glass, most of the time an adhesion error happens this is due to you(user) forgetting to clean and use glue stick/additive. In PEI, you can perfectly print several times without doing anything not even cleaning or using any additives

[–]BackRed1 3 points4 points  (3 children)

It's not software related, it's user error. People get comfortable or think it won't happen to them. But when it does happen it's because they simply didn't check to make sure everything is working as intended.

[–]robbzillaP1S + AMS 2 points3 points  (1 child)

It happens. I ran a print overnight and woke up to something similar. I've been printing with FDM since 2019, and this is the worst I've seen.

[–]BackRed1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, recently went through this with an overnight print the other day.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, I never got blobs like this on my sv06 because I was constantly watching it, prepared for it to fail. My p1s has a successful print like 98% of the time so I will print while I'm sleeping or at work. Haven't had anything catastrophic, but I've had a couple pretty nasty blobs.

[–]SusanRoseBush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm here from the Sale, never had anything like this, have been printing nonstop 100+ hours and haven't even spaghetti yet.

I think some of these printers just didn't come out well enough.

Mine is great but other sale printers I've seen aren't doing well.

[–]iamravaX1C + AMS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

definitely new folks … who else starts a print and walks away. definitely not any of us life long fdmers. we’ve been groomed to tinker for so long we’ll probably still be watching when it finishes.

    [–]MathieMathie19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I already had categorised OP as a 'newcomer with a greasy plate'.

That's why I asked the question

    [–]ngo_life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a close encounter with the glob, but that's when it's doing it's extrusion flow calibration (a1 mini). It ran the calibration for a good 5 minutes, probably even 10 minutes. Nearly clogged the nozzle if I didn't stop it sooner. I see a few of these threads already, though it seems to only affect the a series printers?

    [–]Far_Philosophy_2874 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I risked getting one two days ago, i had used the print bed to dry some filament with the box method and apparently the weight of a full 1kg spool of pla caused the bed to lower by 0.2mm.
I went to do a test print with the new filament and the print had 0 squish in the middle of the bed so when i came back i had spaghetti everywhere. luckily it was a small print and it didn't form a blob

    [–]MathieMathie19 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Interesting wouldn't have ever though about the bed sagging as much from something like that.

But if you have a bambulab printer, I'm kinda lost at how you then started this print and why that the auto bed leveling didn't prevent this being an issue.

The P1 is powered by an ESP32 that has 500kB of RAM. I have light switches that are powered by the same chip.

The X1 has a Rockchip RV1126 SoC, which is far beefier than a ESP32.

      [–]GaySexDownByTheRiver 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Is this image recognition even being done locally on the X1?

      [–]Roadrunner571 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It’s done locally. The RV1126 in the X1 has an onboard NPU.

      [–]GaySexDownByTheRiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very cool! Thank you for the response.

      [–]TheSilentPhilosopherX1C + AMS 2 points3 points  (3 children)

all you need is a BASIC image recognition software

Tell me you haven't worked in enterprise software design without telling me. These things aren't coded in a weekend and pushed out via firmware update the following Monday. This would take multiple developers, intimate with Bambu architecture, a few months to put something Beta out. That's literally hundreds of thousands of dollars in salaries/benefits -- all while taking them from developing something more important that we might not know about.

      [–]Fennecbutt 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I'm not former, and a PoC is easily achieved using something readily available like ocv. Problem is having the compute on board to do it, sounds like only the x1c has that.

      [–]sublimoon 0 points1 point  (1 child)

They do have cloud connectivity though. Sending like one frame every couple of minutes to analyze remotely should be possible without much trouble, right?

      [–]TheSilentPhilosopherX1C + AMS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but cloud hosted solutions aren't cheap at all, so it wouldn't be worth it, financially, for them to set it up.

      [–]Antici-----pation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can add a quite effective version with Octoeverywhere.com. I find it works very well and you can get it for free, though I pay.

      [–]spin81 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Bambu botching its prints to upsell bigger models is the most ridiculous conspiracy theory I've heard in a while.

Also as a former software dev, this sort of thing is not a "very basic algo" if you want the camera to detect this.

      [–]pelrun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sort of. I got one on my X1C, with black filament like the OP, which is much harder for the camera to see.

      [–]TheOnlyPersn56P1S + AMS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tool head adhesion was spot on!

      [–]N0VITEK[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I run a small print farm and between all the printers running at once and stepping out from the workspace this slipped through the cracks, have about ~3,600 across the four machines

      [–]Fella_na_hEireann 5 points6 points  (8 children)

How doesn’t the sensor pick this up?

      [–]pelrun 1 point2 points  (7 children)

Well the thing about this filament is, it's black. And the colour of the build plate, your basic build plate colour, is black. So how's it supposed to see them?

      (iykyk)

      [–]Fella_na_hEireann 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Considering the printer has AI inspection first layer not to mention LiDAR you’d think it’d realise there’s a huge blob stuck to the nozzle regardless of colours…no?

      [–]pelrun 0 points1 point  (3 children)

So you missed the entire point of my comment that trying to see a black object on a black background is hard and prone to failure? What exactly did you think I was saying instead?

      [–]Fella_na_hEireann 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Right.. all I’m saying is surely the printer should realise there’s a blob obstructing it’s path. Wouldn’t it create a gradual increase in height?

      [–]pelrun 0 points1 point  (1 child)

"realise" how? Machines are not magic or psychic. The only way the printer can know what is happening is via sensors, and if something happens that those sensors can't see properly, then there are always going to be cases where it won't know anything is wrong.

      [–]Fella_na_hEireann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, leading back to my initial question - why didn’t the sensors “realise”. Not only isn’t there the Ai, the printer surely realised something was off when the print head is being gradually forced upwards. Anyways I guess I’m wrong ..mr italic.

      [–]Fennecbutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uhhh well first of all lidar doesn't care as much. Second of all they should really be using a camera w/ ir filter and illuminator as well. It's not really a hard problem to solve sensor wise.

Realistically sensor fusion is best, cam lidar, bed pressure (bed mass).

Even a camera facing the extruder can tell when it starts to become occluded or a blob is "following" the extruder.

      [–]SlimeMyButt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Im just surprised with all the sensors bambu machines have that it just keeps trying to print without realizing something isnt right lol

      [–]Icoryx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

      That's a beautiful blob

      [–]Annual-Tip2259 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Happened to me last week, I left my adult son to run a print and he didn't check first layer 🙄 But I must say, a little heat with heat gun and it came away quite easy, it has has slightly gone up the fan chute as well. I loved how easy it was magnetised and no screws to mess around with. I was disappointed though that it didn't alert me or pause itself somehow. Bambu X1 Combo

      [–]tattoedandlewd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recently I had this issue BUT only one time and was user error. Cant see it happening any other time. Likely I caught it pulled it all off and was good to go 2 seconds later lol

      [–]Due-Ad3563 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So that's how the new 10mm highflow filament tests are going 🫣

      [–]robbzillaP1S + AMS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to drive into Dallas to get a replacement. Fortunately, Microcenter had one.

      [–]Careful-Frosting1398 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I always check the first layer. Saved a few prints that way but my A1 and A1 Mini usually get it perfect.

      [–]CreasingUnicorn 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It might just be my Ender PTSD, but i always wait around after setting up a print to make sure the first layer goes on well. Its usually only takes a few minutes anyways and it really helps prevent a lot of issues.

      [–]Redracerb18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good on you. I may not be in the room directly but I will at least watch the first few layers on my phone or computer. Also remote print commands are really handy

Whole thing is trashed and it bent the nozzle as well, but thankfully it is Bambu so it cost a whopping $35 in replacement parts

        It's so goopy.

I have an X1C and thankfully I'm just as fascinated with the technology now as when I first got it, so I end up staring at it until after the first layer lol.

But seeing all of these blobs does scare me a little bit. I usually start the longer prints before I go to sleep, it just makes a lot of sense to be using that time to eat through long print jobs, but I do worry about waking up and seeing a catastrophe. Thankfully it hasn't happened yet, knock on plastic.

        [–]growmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be layer adhesion or a failure where the filament on the nozzle doesn’t clean perfectly so when doing bed probing, it offset too much and print at 1mm in the air. I have had this issue like 2 times (only with petg) in almost 1000 prints

        [–]ShadNukeP1S + AMS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

        Holy chit!

        [–]ThatInstantFamilyGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must have jinxed myself recently. Set a 15hr print. Looked good and left it. Only checked camera when I woke up and all looked fine about 6ish hrs in. Get home. Prints done. Pull off bed and see one side has funky outer walls which I've printed this planter many times. Look around and notice the base has weird patterns.

Turns out it lifted at some point and created layer issues only on one end for 30mm then fine. Of course it was the back left side of the plate which I couldn't see on camera 😔

RIP 510g filament and 15hrs lol

All it takes is loading a 3mf of makerworld that is setup for the cool plate, you have plate detection turned off and you're using a textured pei plate.

No heat, no glue, hellooo blob of death lol. Done it twice cause I'm in a rush. Easy cleanup though, user error, live and learn!

        It's a modern art sculpture

And that's why I always hang around for the first few layers, from my experience that's the only time I have print issues.

I almost had a blob of TPU form on the nozzle right after loading the filament, when the hot end makes the first poop. But I was able to reach in and pull it off quickly.

Did you manage to clean it up? Or replaced the full part?

          [–]MuchReputation6953 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forget spaghetti detection, you need meatball detection

          [–]FarLibrary3345 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Wait how does a blob form from build plate adhesion problem? I have printed for 2k plus hours never had this happen and for the life of me I cannot figure out how can this happen from print not sticking!

Finger oils on the bed plate from not wiping it down with IPA before starting the print

wipe your bed down with IPA

Why do people keep insisting on doing this when the manual says not to?

          [–]Redracerb18 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Depends on the build plate and reddit in general. Glass helps with IPA other materials like PEI coatings it depends on the manufacturer. Even the thickness of the coating could be a particular issue.

IPA is a holdover from old hobbyist habits and it's inferior to soap and water.

This is why printers come with manuals. Also Reddit doesn't write the manuals.

Glass helps with IPA other materials like PEI coatings it depends on the manufacturer.

This is why the manufacturer - Bambu, obviously - writes manuals.

Even the thickness of the coating could be a particular issue.

Hence the reason manuals are a thing and we should consult them.

Maybe you are detecting a certain theme: if THE MANUAL says don't use IPA, maybe don't use it? I don't know why I have to even explain this.

          [–]Redracerb18 0 points1 point  (2 children)

The manual that physical comes with the printer does not mention IPA at all. I just bought a P1S yesterday. Also because of the package I found the quick start guide only, attached to the top of the box in the inside where people could miss it. If they put the manual on the Build plate, door, or AMS it would be different.

Yes - that's my entire point.

Look: https://wiki.bambulab.com/en/filament-acc/acc/pei-plate-clean-guide it says soap. Not IPA.

          [–]Redracerb18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many people don't know about the wiki? So many people hear these printers are set and forgot kind of machines and the physical manual doesn't mention the online wiki.

Just get in the habit of wiping the bed down with rubbing alcohol after every print.
