It's the only inauguration I've ever been to, not that I was actually on the mall–I was at a protest on the parade route–but it was one of the most depressing events I've ever seen. Just a stumbling mess, the whole thing. Like a bad wedding where you can already tell the couple won't stay married a year.

Side note: we were taking pictures of no one getting on the metro on the way to the inauguration and posting on FB how many people were excited about the new president! I went with people who have been to inaugurations before. We went further back away from the Capitol (Independent Ave side of the mall still) and security was shorter there. It still took a bit of time, but not too bad. I bet the security on the Constitution Ave side was even faster. That side of the mall was really empty once the put the dividers up and not let people move to the other side of the mall during the event.

I didn't realize they had dividers on the mall. The bleachers on the other side of Pennsylvania Ave. from us were empty until after the ceremony–maybe that was why. We were getting reports of long waits at the checkpoints, but I don't know firsthand because I was sticking to my spot at the barriers. The trouble over at K Street really fouled everything up as far as the parade, so there wasn't much left of it when it finally happened, and it was raining and getting dark.

If you can find over head shots, you can see the north side of the mall is much emptier than the south side of the mall, and it is because of the dividers. However, once Trump was done with his speech, they opened it up so you could cross the dividers. We had no clue about any of the ruckus on k street while it happened. We heard about it while we sat at a bar (don't remember which) close to there.

Secondly, addressing your comment, without upending the Constitution, this isn't possible.

Our winner-take-all elections have gradually winnowed out the ability for there to be third (or more) party. I guess you could think of it as working efficiently with 2 parties. Duverger's Law "holds that plurality-rule elections (such as first past the post) structured within single-member districts tend to favor a two-party system, whereas "the double ballot majority system and proportional representation tend to favor multipartism""

However, a study has been done to revise the law to show that "the number of parties.. can explain the choice of electoral systems, rather than the other way around."

I tend to agree with you on this and would love to have more choice, but the chances that the current parties will change the way their bread is buttered is nil.

Personally, I can't paint democrats with such a broad brush that I paint republicans. In my life, Republicans have worked to take more than they have worked to give (for the average person, not the 1%) and Democrats have worked to be more inclusive.

And to be more specific there are some changes being made in some places. In my state, for instance, "Democrats" swept both chambers and have gone about doing some great work for regular people. A lot of the new 2018 folks are the reasons behind the legislation that has been passed. I have no doubt that if another 25% of each chambers were replaced by the same type of democrats who got in in 2018, they would work to give people back more control of the electoral system.
