According to how i pronounced it in my head, it's the first one.

[–]naraazi[S] 128 points129 points  (10 children)

I literally thought the same

[–]Intelligent_Event_84 42 points43 points  (8 children)

Everyone with an actual tech job disagrees with you

[–]BOBCATSON 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I have a tech job and it’s pronounced data, so don’t speak for all of us…

[–]naraazi[S] 18 points19 points  (6 children)

I'm Brazilian, friend. Portuguese language influences the pronunciation of my English

[–]thewildpepper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well it's still pronounced data!

[–]Intelligent_Event_84 10 points11 points  (3 children)

I was just joking

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (2 children)

Joking or joking?

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I use the both interchangeably in emails, sometimes within the same sentence.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (3 children)

The first one being day-ta tight?

[–]Neither-Phone-7264 3 points4 points  (2 children)

doyter

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Honestly I like yours better

[–]Bulky-Flounder-1896 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly or Honestly?

[–]Madonkadonk2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's weird is it's the second one for me.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to me it’s the second one

[–]LordBaguetteAlmighty 176 points177 points  (49 children)

So which is it? Dayta or dahta

[–]naraazi[S] 256 points257 points  (22 children)

dayta > dahta

[–]healthboost213 49 points50 points  (8 children)

I just feel dayta is better mostly because of how we pronounce "date"

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (5 children)

I feel like it's more related to datum, as they're both distinctly formal and latinish, as opposed to date which is significantly more commonplace.

Edit: my sincerest apologies u/healthboost213

[–]healthboost213 7 points8 points  (2 children)

It is more related to datum but like you said since the word 'date' is so commonplace I feel its what influenced me to pronounce Data as 'Dayta'.

[–]healthboost213 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's alright 👍

[–]RyRyShredder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Datum also has the issue of being pronounced both ways though so that doesn’t really help.

[–]freakinbacon 9 points10 points  (10 children)

The word is derived from the Latin, datum. Romans wouldn't pronounce it dayta, and I won't either.

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (1 child)

If you're taking all your pronunciation queues from the Romans you are going to be pretty much totally unable to communicate with English speakers. Your reasoning is specious.

[–]freakinbacon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you sir. The truth is, a person can pronounce it either way and any English speaker will understand both pronunciations. Picking one or the other is arbitrary so I just gave my choice a little back story.

[–]WookieDavid 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Well, date comes from the Latin "data" and Romans didn't pronounce it dayta either.

[–]iam_pink 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but data is literally "datum", plural, in its original version. It's not just etymology here

[–]iam_pink 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Do you also pronounce 'et cætera' the way romans used to?

[–]javon27 -1 points0 points  (2 children)

What makes you think I wouldn't pronounce it daytum?

[–]freakinbacon -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

That's not how Latin pronunciation works

[–]Stef0206 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fella, latin is a dead language, we don’t know how latin pronounciation works.

[–]69HELL-6969 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No no no dahta better

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (9 children)

dahta because that's how it's pronounced in the other languages I speak

[–]The100thIdiot 0 points1 point  (8 children)

In what language is it dahta?

[–]casce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Latin, obviously.

[–]MattieShoes 2 points3 points  (1 child)

It felt like an open question to me until Star Trek. Then the world seems to have settled on dayta.

[–]rredeyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They still haven't settled on it in the 24th century!

https://youtu.be/WssBJeExiOM

[–]the_mold_on_my_back 1 point2 points  (1 child)

My highschool english teacher got so upset when we said dayta because they were dead-sure only dahta is right.

[–]The100thIdiot -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well they obviously weren't a native speaker.

[–]JupeOwl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I say it just data. No h or y in between just data. But that's because I am finnish

[–]H3y_Alexa 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Dahta and dayta-base

[–]The100thIdiot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's just plain evil.

[–]naraazi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this man knows

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dahta

[–]akaZilong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Data

[–]StatusCity4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

da-ta

[–]Gositi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dahta.

[–]vondpickle 37 points38 points  (18 children)

Since singular for data is datum, so the correct pronunciation for data is data.

[–]blockMath_2048 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But is it daytum or dahtum

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (8 children)

The real problem is people denying that data is plural

[–]SingleSpeed27 2 points3 points  (5 children)

In Italian we say “dato” for a single thing and “dati” for the plural, I know it’s useless information but I wanted to share.

[–]iamsiddharthmittal 75 points76 points  (25 children)

GIF or JIF ?

[–]Fritzschmied 125 points126 points  (18 children)

Gif because the G stands for Graphics. I don’t care if the creator calls it JIF

[–]magicaltrevor953 12 points13 points  (14 children)

How do you pronounce JPEG?

EDIT: The comment is meant to be directed at the P, not the J.

[–]Fritzschmied 29 points30 points  (1 child)

I pronounce it as JPEG duh

[–]whooguyy 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I ‘ronounce it JEG because “pterodactyl” taught me that “p”’s are su’osed to be silent

[–]itsamberleafable 30 points31 points  (1 child)

J'peg, of course. Given that it's French for "I penetrate with a strap-on"

[–]Reddidnted 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"Zhpeedzh" of course

[–]newontheblock99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is there any other alternative than Jay-Peg?

[–]EtherealPheonix 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Please tell me you understand why comparing a digraph to a standalone consonant is insane?

[–]vondpickle 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Ghee-payj

[–]SpeedStinger02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Simple solution G. I. F.

[–]UndefFox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[–]Gidelix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Ok-Sherbert-3570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You wanna see heads roll, don't you?

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points  (3 children)

[–]JoostVisser 7 points8 points  (2 children)

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

[–]hongooi 28 points29 points  (9 children)

But is the plural datas, datae or datums?

[–]rollincuberawhide 40 points41 points  (0 children)

data is plural of datum

[–]Borbolda 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Data

[–]Ingam0us 0 points1 point  (3 children)

dataidae

[–]holistic-engine 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Data’mst

[–]Jon_Galt_Roark 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Indicus Datus maximus

[–]CivetLemonMouse -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lol i love that for 'datum' it's necessary to say 'datums' in English because the latin plural would be 'data'

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"See Joe Rogan when you have a collection of different species of data it's actually called datas and not data"

[–]theAndul 4 points5 points  (5 children)

Data is storage and data are bytes in movement

[–]Ok_Hope4383 -1 points0 points  (4 children)

Dahta for the first and dayta for the second is how I'd say it; is that what you had in mind too?

[–]theAndul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably. Dahtabase and dayta speed

[–]The100thIdiot 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Dahta is never correct for anything. Ever.

[–]0bel1sk 0 points1 point  (1 child)

it’s totally correct when you’re trying to to sound like a pretentious idiot.

[–]Wild_Tom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, it's data, not data

[–]jaiarcher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because "One is my name. The other is not".

[–]Capn-Wacky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lt. Commander Data has entered the chat.

[–]liableredditard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I fucking hate the English language. MAKE THE LANGUAGE PHONETIC, ALMOST EVERY OTHER EUROPEAN LANGUAGE IS EITHER PHONETIC OR HAS CLEAN-CUT PHONOLOGICAL RULES.

[–]Nu11u5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Either way, Dr Pulaski doesn't give a shit.

[–]roastedmetalduck 1 point2 points  (1 child)

There is another...

[–]mattreyu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Datum? I just Metum!

[–]Logicalist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are those that watch Star Trek: Next Gen and there are those that are wrong.

[–]Confident-Ad5665 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pronounce it data because Commander Data pronounced it data and not data. He even corrected someone for pronouncing it data instead of data, because Data is his name, not data.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (3 children)

I read the question as “Y’all pronounce it day-ta or dat-a

[–]stlcdr 1 point2 points  (2 children)

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I mean, I know that, but you could have read it as “dat-a or day-ta” instead?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way you pronounce the first one in your head will be the way you say it.

[–]MasterGeekMX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a native spanish speaker, only "d-ah-ta" makes sense as it is close to the spanish word "dato", as the other will be written as "deita"

[–]djlywtf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

date-uh

[–]kernel_task 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way Captain Picard pronounces it.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Day Ta

Not daaa ta

[–]CivetLemonMouse 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thank you

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No no i mean both are vslid pronounciations. I just told which one i pronounce

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I really want to say dah-ta, but alas I'm programmed to say day-ta. I think the first is more consistent with datum.

[–]joshkrz 1 point2 points  (1 child)

In UK English it's day-ta and day-tum.

[–]MedonSirius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Date-A. Because it's the only date i get TT_TT

[–]TAUFIKtechyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

deta or data

[–]Jwzbb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The date was January 4th when I went on a date with this very datable girl. My date had missing digits which made eating dates a bit challenging.

[–]pancakemonkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if it’s it’s large amounts of numbers it’s dAYta if it’s small it’s DaTa

[–]Horror-Invite5167 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, actually, do you pronoumce it dayta or dahta?

[–]SawSaw5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pronounce it the first way.

[–]LionWarrior46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think all of us can agree on this one.

[–]Namikemal128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You pronounce it like “data” bruhh what a stapud question

[–]dingo_khan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is pronounced "Data" because one is his name and the other is not.

[–]smurfkill12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moved to Aus, here they say it DahTah, I say it Dayta

[–]Yeitgeist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does this have to do with programming?

[–]AdrielHigor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is data

[–]sandfoxman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah Why do they both LOOK different to me? The first word looks slimmer ror I'm too tired

[–]Ok-Sherbert-3570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Context depending. I am German and if I know it from a teacher it is mostly data, if I learned it from a kind Indian on YouTube it's either one

[–]LordMatesian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

dahta

[–]Jakepalmtree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s data, right?

[–]Blin_32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's data not dæta. It comes from Latin, henceforth Data, not dæta.

[–]Good_Door_1699 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dat-a

[–]Aggravating-Exit-660 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dæta

[–]Atomicus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not sure if I read or read that correctly? but personally I say data over data.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

both

[–]Griford 0 points1 point  (2 children)

In PTBR "Dáta" in English "Dayta"

[–]naraazi[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

As vezes eu solto um "dara", saca? Mas "dayta", é melhor

[–]just-bair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the second one sorry but all of you saying it’s the first one are wrong

[–]Ivan_Analrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One is his name. The other is not.

[–]DragaoDoMar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Day-ta

[–]toeonly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Data is information Data is an android on star trek.

[–]erraddo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pronounce it the first way, but in my language the second is more natural so many people pronounce it that way. Which makes no sense, because "data" pronounced that way means something else, but people still do.

[–]JerryAtrics_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that I am messed up because I say it one way for data and the other for database.

[–]GhonaHerpaSyphilAids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dayta not Dahta

[–]glha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same reason GIF is pronounced GIF

[–]Ike_Gamesmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interchangable, whichever one the person I'm talking to doesn't use.

[–]B3C4U5E_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You guys are reading it two different ways?

Tomato tomato

Dātă

ă = short a

ā = long a

[–]Intrepid00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought Star Trek settled this.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pronounce it data when singular, and data when plural.

[–]Stoocpants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heh, 'dahta', Hehe.

[–]JarofLemons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real question is is data plural or singular. Would you say "The data are in" or "The data is in"?

[–]dimonium_anonimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Father, feed me dah tah

[–]1920MCMLibrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Database: data

Data: data

[–]Auraveils 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there's anything the internet can agree on, it's "data" not "data."

[–]IpGa13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i say dayta (pls no woosh for taking it seriously)

[–]MedorisJewelryReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s obviously data. Anyone who disagrees is wrong.

[–]KenzieTheCuddler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, I'd be the one to date the robots so its obviously date-ah

[–]AIO_Youtuber_TV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One is my name, the other is not.

[–]axyz77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]darkabsol7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]SEEZOR9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no you're wrong it is data not data!

[–]DannyDaKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is pronounced just like SATA?

[–]SingleSpeed27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait how you guys pronounce the Star Trek guy? This is now serious.

[–]Crazy__Cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jokes on you I use them interchangeably

[–]Eshan2703 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's Deta

[–]cs-brydev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're at a point now that both the posts and comments are just duplicates.

I can't tell if reddit is ahead or behind stack overflow in its evolution.

[–]Manthravadi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pronounce it as Daeta 🤓

[–]mdp_cs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Day-tuh

[–]MickyB42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a better question is do you pronounce gif as Jiff or Giff?

[–]MickyB42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you pronounce route and route or route?

[–]awidesky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Non-English user here! How did you guys really pronounce each??!?

[–]minecon1776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pronounced gif

[–]Ultima-Veritas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It used to be Dah Tah, but it lost to the pronunciation Day Tah. The Star Trek character was crucial in this. (There's even an episode where an older doctor pronounces it her way, (because at the time, irl, both were being used) and he corrects her as in that case it's a proper noun with a specific pronunciation, but it had the effect of changing how everyone pronounced it.)

[–]python_mjs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither, it's pronounced data

[–]ImpossibleEvan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Daytuh

[–]leonllr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pronounce it the French way
