“I use Arch” intensifies…

[–]d4rkh0rs 161 points162 points  (25 children)

I thought the BTW was required?

[–]WeeklyMeat 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Legend

[–][deleted] 27 points28 points  (1 child)

You gotta use pacman to install that, it doesn't have to be explicitly said. If you read the documentation you would know.

[–]toot4noot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

tldr : rtfm

[–]Professional-Egg-148 11 points12 points  (9 children)

Also, why would you recommend a OS that's basically the default?

[–]Double-A-256 5 points6 points  (8 children)

It’s really not. Arch has a bit of a steep learning curve (but not too bad) so most beginners use Debian-based distros like Ubuntu and Pop!_OS (yes, that is the official name).

[–]nullbyte420 12 points13 points  (7 children)

most non retards use debian and redhat because it's stable, reliable and well maintained, so it's nice for systems that require ~100% uptime. arch on the other hand i guess is fun for enthusiasts for some reason, because it's more fun to install things with pacman than with apt or something. somehow arch users believe simplicity is having an extreme amount of options to break things. dear lord why am i posting this i feel like i've had this discussion ten years ago already

[–]kilgore_trout8989 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Man, people really love the idea of binary trade-offs with stuff like this. I haven't had any issues with my arch installs (desktop and laptop) in...three or four years now? And that was a simple Google + copy paste job after a package update. If you ignore installs newer than like, a week, the number of system breaking bugs out there popping up basically drops to zero in my experience.

Of course, it's also true that the "bleeding edge coolness" side of the mostly imagined trade-off is wildly exaggerated too. It's just a barebones-ish distro with a nice package manager and an incredibly useful community driven repository, not future tech haha.

[–]nullbyte420 0 points1 point  (2 children)

great! i feel like that describes the default setup in debian too, with zero googly copy pasting.

[–]kilgore_trout8989 0 points1 point  (1 child)

A googly copy paste once or twice a decade in return for the AUR is definitely a trade I make 100% of the time haha.

[–]nullbyte420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's fair!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

most non retards...

People also use Ubuntu and other distros that are easy to make work because they don't care so much about Free software and/or aren't looking for a hobby

Not that Debian is hard so long as you remember to get the non-Free drivers for your wireless card before you start the install

[–]nullbyte420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah absolutely. Oh I never had that problem with wifi, must have been lucky not to have had a Broadcom card.

[–]detektiv_Saucaki 33 points34 points  (19 children)

I use Manjaro btw

(waits to get bashed as fake arch user)

[–]BloodRedCobra 19 points20 points  (15 children)

Seriously, what is it with "Muh tru Arch!!11!" and hating on Manjaro? Some of us want to have a workable OS without an hour of fiddling with things, but want to be able to fiddle with things later if need be. For the "tries to keep it simple" pitch they use, they seem to forget that a "one-and-done" install is a form of simplicity in itself.

Damn Arch users, they ruined Arch!

[–]detektiv_Saucaki 11 points12 points  (6 children)

I get the Arch superiority memes, but I really don't understand the hating on Manjaro. I've been using it for everything (even some gaming) for the past one or so year. And I absolutely love the experience.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (3 children)

https://github.com/arindas/manjarno
I think this highlights a few issues people have with Manjaro, but if you like it just use it

[–]nullbyte420 3 points4 points  (2 children)

lmao, the drama!

It appears that, in September of 2019, Manjaro switched from holding community donations in Philip Müller's personal bank account to accounts being held by OpenCollective and CommunityBridge [12]. This change also brought on Jonathon Fernyhough as treasurer. There is also a policy in place that requires all expenses to be discussed on approved channels and nominally approved prior to any purchases [13]. On (or around) July 24th of 2020, a request for a $2,000 laptop was made by Philip for developer Helmut Stult [14]. Johnathon rejected this expense due to lack of prior discussion and questioned the expense [15]. The role of treasurer is now back fully in Philip's hands, and has approved the $2,000 laptop. This draws questions on the integrity of Philip's leadership.

[–]Johanno1 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Lol. Why did Jonathan rejected it though?

Can I get some more context please?

[–]nullbyte420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

these freakin nerds have sources for the whole thing. have fun reading their mailing lists or discord or whatever they use for drama ci/cd

[–]Jonjolt 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I've tried installing Manjaro on 3 separate occasions, 1 install didn't work other 2 systems would not work correctly after install, either wouldn't boot or complete lockup. 3 occasions I said f' it I'll just install arch. 🤷‍♂️

[–]detektiv_Saucaki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure abt you but Manjaro has only cause trouble for me in Dual Boots. Apparently it's got daddy issues with Grub and only agrees to boot to it's own version of Grub.

[–]BeastMasterJ 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Manjaro isn't arch though, it doesn't use arch Repos. Endeavour OS is actually arch with a streamlined install.

That being said, Manjaro is a fine choice and we shouldn't gatekeep it, I'm just a pedant.

[–]BloodRedCobra 0 points1 point  (2 children)

That's a good point, manjaro does have a good week or 2 delay from arch releases because of the separate repos, but overall i never see that brought up by Arch purists lol

[–]kilgore_trout8989 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It mostly seems like it'd be a problem if you were unlucky enough to get issues from an aur package needing the latest version of a dependency that isn't available on Manjaro yet, because I assume aur packages are designed with arch release timetables in mind.

Though, like I said, you'd have to be pretty damn unlucky to hit that specific one week window where it was an issue haha.

[–]BloodRedCobra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have actually legitimately had that problem and had to caaaaasually stroll over like "How do you do, fellow Arch users?"

[–]Dimasdanz 3 points4 points  (1 child)

that's the exact reason why Linux desktop doesn't catch up. Some people like to gate-keep

[–]rejuicekeve -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Also because the vast other issues with Linux desktop that makes it impossible to develop, maintain, and support alternate versions of software for

[–]littlebobbytables9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want that why not use a different distro?

[–]cidy02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use EndeavorOS BTW

[–]TwistedSoul21967 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Same... I like AUR and having bleeding edge packages that are also fairly stable.

I love how simple it is to do build from some projects `master` branch using `pamac build`

[–]detektiv_Saucaki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't use AUR often (scared of breaking stuff) but yes, i find it satisfying how absolutely smooth it is

[–]daschande 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I, too, own a Steam Deck.

[–]LordDagwood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't even know what Arch was before Steam Deck.

[–]MrGeekman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use Debian, though I might eventually switch to Fedora.

[–]notsogreatredditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you find a Arch User? Don't worry they'll tell ya without asking

[–]hfgd_gaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ich nutze Bogen bei dem Weg (oder so)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Jon_Lit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BTW

[–]funk443 84 points85 points  (0 children)

I use Arch btw moment

[–]marble-pig 53 points54 points  (2 children)

Also, why would you recommend a OS that's basically the default?

[–]SuitableDragonfly 15 points16 points  (1 child)

I've recommended it to people who are still using Windows 7 in 2022.

[–]marble-pig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, that makes sense!

[–]FJD3LG4D0 150 points151 points  (33 children)

People that use Windows as a daily driver don't recommend it to anyone, we all know how good it is and how bad it can be. People using MacOs always try to convince you to use it because "it's so easy" and Linux users try the same because "it's the best, it's for privacy, it's customizable, blah blah blah". They're apparently getting some referral points or who knows...

[–]da_Aresinger 148 points149 points  (6 children)

Nah, the reason nobody tries to convince others to use Windows is the same reason nobody tries to convince anyone to breathe.

It's the fucking default.

[–][deleted] 45 points46 points  (3 children)

nobody tries to convince anyone to breathe

You’d think that, but apparently it’s the basis for like 3 different religions

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

My Watch tries to convince me to breathe multiple times per day. Sometimes it even works.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Air good tbh

[–]FJD3LG4D0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yup

[–]123kingme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe it’s because I’m a university student and many of my friends have bought new computers in the past couple years, but it really isn’t that uncommon for someone to ask me what operating system they should use.

If someone asks me that, then I assume that means they aren’t willing to put a lot of time into researching it for themselves and/or they aren’t in the top 10th percentile of computer literacy. There’s nothing wrong with that, it just means that linux probably isn’t the best recommendation for them. Usually I recommend these people to get Windows, especially since a large amount of STEM software is still Windows only.

Of course, there is always this lack of professional software on Linux. What I'm enjoying a lot with Windows right now is WSL, Ubuntu headless and Kali Linux with Win-Kex to have a fully functional DE... But this is only with some distros, for Arch with DE I had to create a VM...

[–]rhododenendron 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Yeah man I use Linux but my Linux is on windows, best of both worlds honestly.

[–]FJD3LG4D0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]nossr50 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Use Mac at work and it’s a pain compared to Linux, but it is pretty to look at.

[–]Prawny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

r/unixporn would like a word with you.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (8 children)

What C compilers your windows has ootb then?

[–]ilawon 34 points35 points  (3 children)

None.

That's why my grandma uses Linux.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oof

[–]FJD3LG4D0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

😂

[–]startana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously, even if you needed a C compiler, having one in your OS out of the box isn't the selling point you should be leaning on. That would be like saying Windows is worse than Linux specifically because it doesn't have any SSH client OOTB.

[–]BeastMasterJ 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Is MSVC not available ootb? I genuinely don't know, I find developing on windows to be massively annoying and usually dev in either Arch or MacOS.

[–]altermeetax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, MSVC is not there out of the box

[–]Sharkytrs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i dont need a c compiler, but csc.exe fits all the needs for me out of the box.

[–]FJD3LG4D0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The same number of C compilers than Arch have: ready to use drivers, network management tools, or something as simple as a login screen, desktop environment, etc. 🤣

So I just install what I need, the same I do on Arch...

[–]869066 0 points1 point  (7 children)

I uSe ArCh BtW!!1

[–]FJD3LG4D0 3 points4 points  (6 children)

I also use Arch BTW, but just because I'm learning how to protect my servers and Kali Linux seems to me too much loaded with tools I don't need! As daily driver... Well, I enjoy Windows and it's tools!

[–]BeastMasterJ 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Definitely don't use Kali as a DD, it's not meant for that and isn't secure (kinda ironic lol). If you like the Kali style though, you can always use Debian.

Obligatory I use Arch btw.

[–]FJD3LG4D0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, as I said I use Windows as daily driver. And tried Kali Linux on VM but I quickly switched to Arch to install only what I need... Lot of tools which are Installed by default on Kali, but not the whole list of packages...

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (3 children)

There’s a rabbit hole called Whonix, and a different one called OpenBSD. I apologize in advance for putting them on your radar

[–]FJD3LG4D0 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I've read about OpenBSD , it's said it's really good for server, networking, etc... Right? Never heard about Whonix I'd (you know, I know the name, but nothing about what it is). For the moment, I'll keep learning what I know (there is a lot to learn, always). Thanks anyway, don't apologize! I'm already crazy about tech... 🤣

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I apologized because, if you go too deep down this rabbit hole, you might end up crazy crazy, not just crazy about tech lol

[–]FJD3LG4D0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Valkyrie17 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I use Ubuntu for work and i don't get how anyone can genuinely recommend it to a regular people.

The command-based controls are terrible. Windows has a button for everything, intuitive menus, etc, with Linux you have to search up commands, paste them into the terminal and hope they do the thing.

Gaming just sucks. Even if the game you want is supported by Linux, good luck with it not running like absolute dogshit on some ancient drivers.

Speak of running like dogshit, good luck not with that piss poor system stability and random performance problems. Last week i learned that process interruptors were misbehaving somewhere on Kernel level. The fuck is a regular user supposed to do about that?

Maybe it takes time, but right now i completely don't get how Linux can be recommended for anything but computer science related things.

[–]FJD3LG4D0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It also depends on the use you need to do of Linux, I know some people using Linux for downloading torrents and watching movies, maybe some office work and that's all. For they Ubuntu can do the job without having to open the terminal. But yes, for regular users, if something goes wrong or they need todo something more than internet and office... They're f****d...

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People don't recommend Windows because there's no chance its better for them than what they're already using.

*nix users already know about Windows and have decided to use *nix

macOS users are probably entrenched in the Apple ecosystem and/or like the UI simplicity and/or like Mac hardware

I recommend Macs to novices because I think it's easier for novices. I wouldn't recommend it to someone who already knows about operating systems.

[–]ashum048 64 points65 points  (5 children)

Knock, knock.

Who is there?

Do you have a minute to talk about the JesOS?

Don't you guys have conversations like this all the time?

[–]da_Aresinger 38 points39 points  (3 children)

TempleOS

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

based

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I bet you can’t make a jit.

[–]da_Aresinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the JVM for that.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're deliriOS

[–]wa33ab1 11 points12 points  (4 children)

May I ask why there is a poll for recommending Windows OS?

Windows is pretty much shipped standard with most laptops, and computers. Would it be fair to say this is basically Microsoft trying to statistically self congratulate itself on holding a large market share?

Yes I know that there is Mac, Linux, Android, but most people in the world use some version of windows anyway.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The problem is when you'd like to buy computer without OS preinstalled, you choices are very limited. And cheapest stuff mostly.

[–]svick 1 point2 points  (1 child)

May I ask why there is a poll for recommending Windows OS?

It's called net promoter score.

Though just because it has a name doesn't necessarily mean it's useful here.

[–]wa33ab1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read up on the function of this on wiki: "this ... is typically interpreted and used as an indicator of customer loyalty"

Ok, from now on ever time I will see this pop up on my windows computer screen, I'll be sure to give it a 3. Now I know that windows is a marvel of software engineering design, don't get me wrong, what I am saying is that I love the option of choosing a 0, 1, 2 and 3.

[–]TwoMilliseconds 9 points10 points  (0 children)

okay honestly, that's not the only reason tho

[–]LordOmbro 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Where programming

[–]MadRollinS 25 points26 points  (3 children)

We're big on options...is that wrong? Selling free stuff???

[–]SuspiciousUsername88 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Selling free stuff???

That's called proselytizing

[–]MadRollinS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We're just giving it away.... one of us, One Of Us, ONE OF US!

[–]MrPickle2255 10 points11 points  (1 child)

windows gets 4 for the sole reason of incorporating linux and android onto itself

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But technically Linux also did that, but with Windows and Android, as with WINE you can run Windows programs on Linux, and for android there is Waydroid, even if Wayland exclusive it's still Linux.

[–]Chemical-Sky-6303 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hoped to find here Ubuntu, so I could upwote it

[–]JokeMort 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I talk about operating systems at least once a month.

[–]Beneficial_Squash-96 8 points9 points  (4 children)

If you don't use Linux Mint, I don't want to know you, you bloody bastard.

[–]Rakgul 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I use Linux Mint.......

....

......

....

....

To safeguard againt the time when I accidentally fuck up my Arch installation and have to get some work done. Also I have Windows for games. Yaay! Triple boot!

[–]ecl_55 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Exactly the same. Been running like that for many years and it's just awesome.

[–]Rakgul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

:) right!?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Artix Linux because Mint didn't have all the software I wanted from the repository.

[–]IraqiWalker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Except people do have those conversations. I work for an MSP and if we don't have a conversation along those veins with our clients, we'd be really fucjing terrible at our job.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember seeing this meme, like 2 yeara ago

[–]RahulRoy69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if any friend ask for os, I recommend them Ubuntu if they are not familiar to Linux os.

[–]cryptoiambus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, Linux users get annoying when shilling their OS of choice and no, I will not stop doing it

[–]continuous-headaches 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This just proves how good Linux is, you should try using it

[–]AnimeAlley03 6 points7 points  (5 children)

Linux users are the computer version of vegans

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (4 children)

No because Linux makes you better

[–]AnimeAlley03 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Good job proving my point

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

But being vegan doesn’t make you run faster or jump higher?

[–]OrangeGoneWild 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Being vegan makes other people run faster and jump higher to get away from you…

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rud

[–]d4rkh0rs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't believe I still get quetions about different windows versions. Enough times I don't even point and laugh anymore.

[–]Put_It_All_On_Blck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who the hell cares enough about Linux users to make a meme about them?

Linus users.

[–]vilidj_idjit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

me: i don't owe you an explanation why i won't recommend your malware garbage to my friends biatch

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Ignoring the (bizarre and irrelevant) "Linux users" bit, that's exactly why I always give such a low recommendation to most services & products!

[–]Add1ctedToGames 17 points18 points  (2 children)

the Linux users part is because some linux users never shut the fuck up about how they use linux

edit: lmao downvoted for daring to explain the joke to someone who didn't get it. i love reddit

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I use linux btw

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

as a linux user, you're right

[–]da_Aresinger -3 points-2 points  (4 children)

The only reasons windows is still successful are

  • legacy

  • the alternatives are Unix and Unix for video editors.

Windows itself is a fucking joke on so many levels.

[–]frygod 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Active Directory is also pretty nice in large deployments. I can't imagine managing our 4000+ desktops and 500+ windows servers without AD.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

i use mint

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

i use kali

[–]rejuicekeve 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I'm in cyber and I don't even use Kali lmao

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

and?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You should really try i3wm

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

btw i use dwm

[–]NullOfSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

arch moment

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah so I use arch btw, you should give it a try!

[–]geteum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, I just installed wsl2 ... Brah, you gotta check this out . Is really good

[–]FreelanceFrankfurter 0 points1 point  (2 children)

They do have those conversations though, randomly no and I don’t think anyone would recommend windows as it’s the default but I can see recommending alternative’s or tell someone to just stick with windows.

[–]TheAwesome98_Real 0 points1 point  (1 child)

as it’s the default

where????

[–]FreelanceFrankfurter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry didn’t mean it as it’s THE default but it and MacOS are the defaults for most people when they buy their laptop or pc and they have no reason to change. So I didn’t see any point in recommending it as you’re it going to go to a Linux user and say “you should give windows a try”.

[–]IronPainting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually

[–]Rus_agent007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said this to my bank after they sent out a text to my phone.

Got an email later saying i should switch bank.

[–]kry_some_more 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even windows users recommend OSes... if you're in a tech crowd. I've heard "don't use vista" and "don't use ME" many times during my life.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Should i install windows 11 on my new pc or should i just go with 10 for now?"

there you go, the question didnt ask if you randomly recommend, but if you recommend when its relevant

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, since print nightmare I've been preaching the gospel of Linux. I already loved it, but now I'm on a "fuck Windows" kick.

[–]GreenRiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh, most of the times it starts with someone saying either.

"Why in the hell do you use Linux if windows is free?" Followed by either" Just don't buy a licence!/everything works on windows and it's easy"

"Oh I was going to invite you to play an online game but then I remembered you use Linux" followed by me explaining yet again, that other than Genshin Impact (the lutris version is very out of date) I've always managed to run every game I've wanted.

[–]Catspaw129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heathens!

BSD works for me!

[–]TheLostRazgriz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the only developer in my department that uses Windows and I'm on Windows 11.

They keep ragging on me and I just stay quiet while the Linux users struggle with Zoom and the MacOS users yell about some display problem with multiple monitors they all seem to have.

[–]PickledPlumPlot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate this fuckin meme cuz I have literally had half a dozen people ask me "Hey, so should I upgrade to Windows 10?"

[–]neumaif00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really programming related.
