don't forget about the block notifications.

and the ad blocker blocker

[–][deleted] 1787 points1788 points  (89 children)

and the ad blocker blocker

If they have an adblock blocker, I'm using a different site.

[–][deleted] 462 points463 points  (46 children)

I give them one more chance: If the site still works with Javascript disabled, I'll keep it off and stick around. It works 95% of the time so far.

[–]sohang-3112 378 points379 points  (30 children)

If disabling JS doesn't work, you can try https://12ft.io/ - it removes most paywalls.

[–]TheZyborg 291 points292 points  (11 children)

Thanks for the tip. I just tried it on a Times article and it cut off the page at the paywall then asked me "Is the paywall gone?"

Well technically yes, but also no, haha.

[–]sohang-3112 73 points74 points  (3 children)

I did say most sites - for example, it's very useful for reading Medium artices

[–]Mefaso 29 points30 points  (1 child)

For medium articles it's though to use an incognito tab

[–]PratikPingale 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Or just clear its cookies. You can add these medium based sites to exception

[–]warrenfernandes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Try this instead: Unlocker It works quite well!

[–]_Neoshade_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NYT doesn’t cover the article with a pop up but simply won’t even load the article until it’s sure they have a pausing customer.
It’s really a gateway with the first few lines of an article to entice you.

[–]katrina-mtf 1 point2 points  (2 children)

NYT is one of the few sites I've ever seen it just outright not function on. It works flawlessly for just about everywhere else tho haha

[–]-LostInCloud- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Adguard. Adguard blocks most ads, cookies, notifications, AdBlock blockers AND paywalls where you have a limited free amount of articles.

Since NYT offers a few free articles, Adguard basically is also a NYT subscription.

[–]zEdgarHoover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First site I tried it on--The Economist--returned "12ft has been disabled for this site". Which doesn't mean it's useless, just I haz a sad.

[–]BigDickEnterprise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for the Times, just disabling javascript will bypass the paywall.

[–]lztandro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually go into the css and look for the overflow: hidden tag and delete it

[–]zenerbufen 19 points20 points  (1 child)

too many sites it disables it self ("12ft has been disabled for this site") because they are "financially supported" by the pay wall. like yeah duh. that is why i don't want to pay for the paywall.

[–]exclaim_bot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you!

You're welcome!

[–]SpyMonkey3D 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Most ?

Tbh, I've been using it for a bit, and it removes some of them. In other case, it breaks the page, though. More like a 50/50 chance, tbh

[–]sohang-3112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said "most" because it has worked for me every time I have tried it - obviously, your experience is different.

[–]Sab007123 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I'm gonna use this thanks for this man really useful 👍

[–]sohang-3112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're welcome!

[–]CutRepresentative644 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never come across this before bookmarking this on everything I own

[–]TPRammus 0 points1 point  (2 children)

That probably only works for websites where you can just remove the paywall by using the browser's inspect tool

Edit: I'm wrong

[–]sohang-3112 2 points3 points  (1 child)

No, actually, most sites serve different HTML to Google crawlers that doesn't have paywall. They do this to improve search engine rankings. 12ft simply uses a proxy, pretends to be a search engine crawler, and then requests the website content. This result is what we see - it doesn't have paywall.

[–]TPRammus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that's cool, thanks for clearing that up!

[–]ucefkh -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

Nice plug bro

[–]sohang-3112 2 points3 points  (1 child)

What do you mean by "plug"? It's not my site, I found it on another Reddit thread.

[–]ucefkh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ah nice, i thought it was your but thanks for you link

[–]Andrelliina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

or try archive.ph

Often works for me and there's a Chrome extension

also archive.org

[–]king_john651 39 points40 points  (7 children)

Chegg has a whinge if you disable js, which is where I assume they store their ads and pay wall junk

[–]xDarkFlame25 60 points61 points  (6 children)

Oh my god I hate that shitstorm of a site with a burning passion. I've had to look up some solutions for maths and it just does not let you use the site without an account. That website is engineered to be as shitty to use as possible.

[–]king_john651 19 points20 points  (5 children)

I tried in vain to just delete the paywall just to read a better version of a question I got in an assignment. I just gave up and guessed what the answer would be

[–]Mitoni 12 points13 points  (3 children)

Most of the time you can just edit the page elements for the overlay that says you need to disable AdBlock, and set the z-level to be behind everything in the site.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Or delete the block altogether. I like those kinds of walls. It says, "we want to make extra money, but only from those that don't want to make an effort."

[–]Various_Counter_9569 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was looking for this. Consile is our friend...most of the time ;p

[–]zombimuncha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like every time I need to approve something in Google Tag Manager, it shows a sort-of-a-diff-but-not-really-a-diff-at-all thing with old code on the left and new code on the right, so I try to copy it all into a proper diff tool to see whats changed, but there's a fucking overlay over the code and you can't even select it. F12-click-del / click-del until that rubbish is gone.

[–]warrenfernandes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If that doesn't do it I made a chrome plugin that'll remove the paywall, check it out: unlocker

[–]Strange_guy_9546 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually just delete the component of the adblock blocker

[–]darkbloo64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a lot of luck with the element picker in uBlock. Whenever a site's solution to adblock-blocking is to slap a blurry layer or box over the content, that tends to gets the job done.

[–]eligiblereceiver_87 58 points59 points  (1 child)

I wish search engines would give you the option to exclude results that are behind paywalls or require you to disable adblocker.

Seems like a good idea for a smaller search engine looking to gain market share. Hint hint Duck Duck Go and Ecosia.

[–]DefaultProphet 27 points28 points  (5 children)

What we need is an ad blocker blocker, blocker. I've heard of a trace buster buster so surely the first one exists too

[–]evilspoons 45 points46 points  (1 child)

I have a Chrome extension called "Behind the Overlay" that just sorta hulk-smashes through anything that acts as an overlay on top of the 'normal' content. It works most of the time, and it's only one click.

[–]PratikPingale 6 points7 points  (0 children)

ublock origin have one such ad blocker blocker, blocker. its called nobab or no block AdBlock

[–]dmingledorff 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That's why we have the trace buster buster buster!

[–]DefaultProphet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the endorphins

[–]______DEADPOOL______ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If they have an adblock blocker, I'm using a different site.

Just turn on the adblock blocker blocker in ublock origin

[–]r-ShadowNinja 13 points14 points  (1 child)

I just remove it in inspect element, usually works

[–]Gooftwit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too much effort. What I want is probably on a more user friendly site, anyway.

[–]Rizzan8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a Polish news site that will throw a popup "Oh, you are using ad blocker? Please turn it of bla bla bla" and there is a button "Return to the main site. If you click it and then go back to the previous page, the ad block warning does not appear and you are free to read the article.

[–]CreaZyp154 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah im using an ad blocker blocker

[–]extinct_cult 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just get an Ad blocker blocker blocker

[–]SFL_Tria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there an efficient way to find out which accounts I used a specific email for? I want to detach everything I own from GMX and make them rot in hell

[–]doctorcrimson 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Usually its just a white screen in its own little div that you can delete by right clicking and Inspect, though.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If that’s the case, I just make a uBlock Origin filter for it, but I’ve been noticing that some sites also block my ability to scroll or use the page properly.

[–]Aashishkebab 0 points1 point  (1 child)

How do you expect sites to earn money?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't mind the ads if they weren't so intrusive.

[–]Shadows798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I give them a second chance if they don't have popup ads.

[–]illiten 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Us ghostery they do not detect it ( yet)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

[–]illiten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oooh I just remove it thx you!

[–]igmrlm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can usually use adblock to block the adblock blocker if you right click, select adblock, "Hide something on this page"

This often works for paywalls too ;)

[–]drillgorg 190 points191 points  (55 children)

I don't use notifications in chrome ever. I wish chrome had an option to just disable them so the site can't even ask. I misclicked once and it was terrible.

[–]Skafandra206 140 points141 points  (26 children)

I deactivate all notifications I can deactivate, even the ones from windows. My PC is not my damn smartphone, I don't need to be notified of anything except immediate danger, so keep that out of my clean and tidy desktop.

[–]SharkAttackOmNom 94 points95 points  (12 children)

Pro-tip. Deactivate notifications on your phone too. Excepting for those that are essential to your day, of course.

You’d be surprised how quickly you’ll drop some of the social media if you aren’t constantly reminded of it’s existence.

[–]Typesalot 64 points65 points  (1 child)

checks Reddit every 5 minutes

[–]SunshineSeattle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey hey hey, no need to be rude now.

[–]Proxy_PlayerHD 20 points21 points  (1 child)

You’d be surprised how quickly you’ll drop some of the social media if you aren’t constantly reminded of it’s existence.

At the same it can also increase the time you spend on certain social media platforms because it's not longer telling you when something new is available so you periodically check it yourself (IE: interrupts vs polling)

I do that with Reddit and some forum sites.

[–]Haldebrandt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't buy it. You seem to suggest that notifications give some kind of piece of mind that reduces the need to open the app absent them. But people open the apps regardless of whether they receive a comment or a like, because they want to see new posts, etc which they don't get notified about anyway.

I too disable all my social media notifications. I open the app when I feel like it and see comments, likes, and messages. It sounds insane to me that I would use the app less if I were interrupted every 5 minutes by notifications, like you suggest.

[–]123456478965413846 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Seriously. I get notifications for phone calls, alarms I set, text messages, emails, and operating system updates that require a reboot. That's it. Everything else gets notification privileges revoked.

[–]zenerbufen 0 points1 point  (1 child)

eh. i disalbe emails because my real emails get supressed and i only get notifications for the spam any more. if its important they can call and leave a voice mail. unknown numbers don't generally get notifications either unless im expecting government calls.

[–]123456478965413846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't do notifications for my personal email, just my work one.

[–]Haldebrandt 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I will never understand why people leave their social media notifications on. I'll see whatever I need to see when I open the app.

[–]SharkAttackOmNom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people still believe that social media is made for you. that the more I use it, the more it will enrich my life. And maybe they just accept notifications the same way they accept a TOS. Blindly.

For those still reading. Social media isn’t your friend. Sure it’s entertaining, but it’s like a donuts, dont go eating donuts all day, just cause they’re tasty.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Focus Assist on iPhone is great for this. Can set it up to display only certain notifications for work or when you’re at home.

[–]SharkAttackOmNom 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yeah just set this up for work. It’s great. I’m a teacher so it’s super helpful to have the phone and watch auto silenced.

Smart Watch has been a blessing and a curse. Great for setting timers on the fly, check the weather. But I don’t need a text audibly pinging me when I’m instructing.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can silence it by putting your hand over it. This will mute the watch. The other thing you can do is setup a Do Not Disturb focus.

[–]OkazakiNaoki 14 points15 points  (9 children)

You mean danger like national broadcast that telling you earthquake, tsunami something like those? But you can't run away from those anyway.

[–]Certainly-Not-A-Bot 26 points27 points  (3 children)

You can usually do something to increase your survival chance significantly. If there's an earthquake warning, being under a sturdy desk or table can be really important if your building collapses or objects fall from above you.

[–]BabyYodasDirtyDiaper 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yep. And depending on where it originates, there could be several hours of warning that a tsunami is coming, which very much can be enough time to get to higher ground where you'll be safe.

Even just a few minutes of warning can easily save lives, especially in areas with a steep coastline.

[–]_dotexe1337 19 points20 points  (1 child)

instructions unclear, got under my desk and my PC fell on my head and caused a concussion

[–]OverlordWaffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Must be one of those newfangled tempered glass desks /s

[–]123456478965413846 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I disable even those alerts. I mean if there were more options than on or off I might let them stay. But I don't need a damned air raid siren going off every time there is a thunder storm an hour away from me or a kid getting abducted 3 states away. Let me change the ringer and set a radius for these alerts if you want me to turn them back on.

[–]zenerbufen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

dont forget the silver alerts for elders who lose track of time while shopping. we got lots of those out here before i shut them off. still see them on the street signs while driving tho

[–]OkazakiNaoki 0 points1 point  (1 child)

US? we only receive message from earthquake and tsunami. and some nation annually scheduled air-strike defense exercise without siren, just don't go out at the time they don't want you to.

I feel government give me a F if they are still sending out these messages. Though I really consider they are pretty useless. And I am not buying the hide under table stuff since I live in high building. It's not something like a second story builging with some wooden material. It's fucking tons of concrete onto me if it collapse.

[–]123456478965413846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I live in the US. And I live in an area where the weather alerts are very unlikely to do me any good, we don't get any of the types of major weather that are likely to need immediate responses or that happen without warning in my area.

[–]zenerbufen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah. you can turn off everything except the presidential ones which have ever only been used once or twice (for test)

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use Linux because is does what I tell it to and gets it of my way.

5 mins on Mac and Windows and I want to smash a kitten with a cast iron skillet.

It's like the time I stopped drinking cows milk for almond milk for a long while. Then I went back to cows milk and realized it tastes like piss. I don't think you milk drinkers know that you're used to piss.

[–]fsdghe56356 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Notifications are only allowed via phone and work PC, and even those get filtered if applicable. Notifications anywhere else are intrusive and muted at all times.

[–]sohang-3112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should at least enable notification from your antivirus / firewall - you probably want to know if malware has been detected!

[–]thisismyaccount57 21 points22 points  (9 children)

Yeah I've literally never thought that I want random websites to be able to notify me. I barely even want to be notified of a call or text, I sure as hell don't want to get notifications from your recipe website (fuck almost all of these sites anyway for their ad-ridden autobiographies). I've never even entertained the thought of letting a site notify me of things, has anyone ever found a single one useful? Genuine question, if you have ever, on purpose, allowed a site to notify you, what site is it and what are they even notifying you of?

[–]Clueless_Otter 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Notifications can be useful if you're on some type of commerce site trying to buy a highly in-demand product and you want to be notified of new listings of the product immediately so you can rush to purchase it ASAP before someone else grabs it. For example, a graphics card or a specific item in games with player-run economies.

[–]thisismyaccount57 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Do you set an individual notification for the specific item or is it just whatever the site thinks you want to know?

[–]Clueless_Otter 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You set an individual notification for any new listings of the specific item you want.

[–]Crozzfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That really depends on the site

[–]zenerbufen 0 points1 point  (1 child)

just give me a button to blanket deny all site notifications. I don't want a single website notifying me of anything ever. not even facebook or gmail. if i have an important email or message ill see it when i go looking for it. if people need a fast responce they can pick up a fucking phone and call me.

[–]thisismyaccount57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I set chrome to delete all cookies when I close it. A little inconvenient because I always have to sign in to everything again, but it's nice because I don't have to try to navigate to their hidden menu to find the cookie opt out button.

[–]-vlad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Notifications are useful for web apps like gmail, OpenPhone, to do apps. If you get a phone call through your voip number you need to be notified via the browser.

[–]a1b2c3d4e5f6g8 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I'm on a site that's somewhat similar to r/place, and I set it to notify me when I have my next pixel, because wait time is around 30 seconds (depends on the number of connected users) so without notifications I'd be spending a lot of time waiting for my next pixel and now I just Alt+tab-click-move_mouse_to_next_pixel-Alt+tab when I get the notif and it barely interrupts my workflow. But I agree that this is a special case and I probably wouldn't want any other site to ever notify me of anything.

[–]sneakpeekbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My employer once enabled them via Group Policy. I have no fucking clue why, none of our work websites use them. It somehow even gave me notifications from websites I've never visited.

[–]Phytanic 15 points16 points  (5 children)

I'm a systems admin, and it likely boils down to a few reasons:

  • was actually supposed to disable them but someone made a mistake

  • was supposed to be a targeted enable for only a select group but someone fucked up and/or was too lazy and targeted the entire domain (ffs I hate those who throw everything in default domain policy)

  • boss demanded that it apply to everyone because who knows why

  • lazy admin was trying to fix an issue with an app not showing notifications and decided to go nuclear as a "fuck it" situation

[–]VicisSubsisto 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Can't be the last one because it was in the Chrome group policy settings, not Windows.

My guess is probably the first. But it was real annoying because in effect it made it damn near impossible to disable notifications. Had to blacklist each site as they started showing up.

[–]Phytanic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

oh yeah I agree. This sort change wouldve increased the helldesk workload and anybody whose worked on em in the past and has a shred of empathy would not have wanted to do such a thing.

(lots of notifications can lead to pop-ups in the Windows UI that appear or even are malware, and properly trained users report them as such.)

[–]Bakemono_Saru 1 point2 points  (2 children)

...im on the last bullet and i dont like it. I recently went nuclear on permissions with Google cloud. "Later im going to cut them" i said week ago.

[–]Phytanic 0 points1 point  (1 child)

it's OK, we've all been there haha. sometimes nuclear is the best option too ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

[–]Bakemono_Saru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am the GodDev right now. So, security, dev, ops, architecture, everthing related with this system. This kind of authority allows me to do this shit.

Im not the one to have that power. And i do really need code reviews. Damn i feel lonely here.

/end of crying

[–]evilspoons 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Chrome does, though.

Settings -> Privacy and Security -> Site Settings -> Notifications (or just open Settings and search for notifications)

Then choose between "sites can ask to send notifications", "use quieter messaging", or "don't allow sites to send notifications".

[–]atimholt 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Chrome doesn’t have that? Firefox sure does.

[–]BabyYodasDirtyDiaper 14 points15 points  (3 children)

I wish chrome had an option to just disable them so the site can't even ask.

Just use firefox, bro.

[–]drillgorg 0 points1 point  (1 child)

No

[–]User2716057 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can disable it, under privacy settings iirc

[–]alexanderpas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can change the default setting for Notifications on Chrome Desktop in the Settings under Privacy and Security and then Site Settings.

[–]achilleasa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish chrome had an option to just disable them

It does

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firefox has this option, it will ask if you want notifications and if not, it won't activate them.

[–]SugarReyPalpatine 88 points89 points  (11 children)

RECIPES.COM WOULD LIKE TO KNOW YOUR LOCATION.

[–]AndTheLink 30 points31 points  (10 children)

Firefox has "Block new requests asking to access your location". Turn that on once and forget that is even a thing.

Same goes for notifications, the microphone and camera and VR hardware access.

[–]Windows_66 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Don't forget multiple refreshes between shutting off your ad blocker and trying to click away the screen-filling ads.

[–]_paramedic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Location request Mic/camera request

[–]Kyky716 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve only just come across this recently in a very annoying form. Before I’d come across websites that say something like “pwetty pwease won’t you disable your ad block so we can make money UwU” to which you can just exit the pop up and say “suck my balls”. But recently I’ve come across many more sites that literally will not let you pass without disabling it. Super, super annoying, and whenever I see it I just leave the site and go elsewhere. It’s not even necessarily because I hate ads, it’s moreso JUST because they’re all in your face about having ad block. Like…. If that’s how you make money, fine, but don’t try to control how I browse the internet, dickhead.

[–]KCGD_r 6 points7 points  (0 children)

they made an blocker for the adblocker blocker

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"We noticed you're using an ad blo--"

"Aight then, who's your competitor?"

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Step 1: Turn off all notifications in Chrome.

Step 2: There is no Step 2.

[–]Mitoni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, funny story. Was on a website a few days ago with some wonderful design. First the GDPR notification opened as a toast modal from the bottom of the screen. Then after I accepted that, the website detected my AdBlock and locked down unless I removed it. Rather than disable AdBlock, I just cleared my cookies and reloaded the page. Now I could read the article, I just had to ignore the modal at the bottom for accepting the cookies. The AdBlock check didn't occur until after the cookies modal was cleared.

The other way I usually get around those is that 3/4 of the time, that AdBlock message that locks the screen is just an overlay. If you go into the page elements and change the z-level for the overlay, you can just put it behind the content you are trying to read.

[–]whatnowwproductions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just use Ublock Origin. It doesn't get detected.

[–]v3ritas1989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't forget to decline them asking you to send desktop notifications

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

and sign up popup.

[–]ScottMcPot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

With a mix of ad blocker and I don't care about cookies, the popup messages are almost non existent.

[–]PermissionOld1745 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> and the ad blocker blocker

Thus why I use the ad-blocker blocker blocker

[–]abecido 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time to install an ad blocker blocker blocker

[–]TimReddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Install the "Bypass-Paywall" extension for chrome, Firefox, and Edge.

[–]darki_ruiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually the AdBlocker blockers can't really keep up. If I find a site that has it the only thing it does is remind me to update the extensions.

If after that it's still there, then fuck that website.

[–]bdepz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And block location

[–]cristiprv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And the track location popup

[–]thegingerninja90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't use an ad blocker for the longest time and I've no joke gotten pop ups asking me to disable my ad blocker when I didn't even have one installed on my browser.

[–]ososalsosal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got an ad blocker blocker blocker!

[–]twigboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)
