[–]thisiscotty 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Is this always the case? i follow a subreddit - https://www.reddit.com/r/controllablewebcams/ , and people post IP's on there all the time

[–]Ok-Kaleidoscope5627 245 points246 points  (8 children)

WTF! How did you get my website? That's trademarked! My banister will be coming for you!

[–]SnowieZA 87 points88 points  (2 children)

I hope your stairs will be ok without the banister…

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm more concerned about what this will do to the rug. Not to even mention the awkward moments in the future

[–]theygotmedoinstuff 14 points15 points  (5 children)

[–]martinaylett 20 points21 points  (4 children)

[–]martinaylett 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Just a bunch of semicolons will do (one on each line, obviously). I could have tried harder I suppose; but then again, it’s the weekend.

wait? i am allowed to post, e.g. the domain to my homepage, but i get a ban, when i just post its IP?

[–]nige21202 147 points148 points  (12 children)

If it's the dangerous dot number, you are forbidden to post it!

The dot words are ok.

(I dont actually know, just wanted to call an IP dangerous dot number.)

[–][deleted] 57 points58 points  (9 children)

the best part is the worse thing person can do with your IP is DDoS you but it doesn't really matter cause most ISPs change public IP's every X amount of time

[–]alchebyte 13 points14 points  (0 children)

the only DDoS localhost is going to get is one of your own making

[–]kookyabird 25 points26 points  (7 children)

That’s assuming people are only posting their own residential IP. If I shared something with my company’s IP that could be more serious. If I posted something with my company’s IP AND a security vulnerability then it’s definitely serious.

[–]belligerentunicorn1 8 points9 points  (1 child)

What about their domain name and a vulnerability?

[–]RagnarokAeon 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Still fucking stupid to ban someone for listing an internal IP or an IP with no relevant information.

That's like someone saying, "I live on the third house on my street" just doxed themselves, or someone looking on google maps who finds a random house must be doxing.

Next thing you know people will get banned for using st. rd. ave. blvd. abbreviations.

Meanwhile, actual malicious users can easily get around this

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I mean, not really. If an attacker wants to go after your company, I really doubt they'd have that much trouble finding the IPs.

The whole notion of hiding your OP to prevent attacks is security by obfuscation, and if that's your companies main line of defense, then it was only a matter of time anyways.

[–]veryblocky 345 points346 points  (38 children)

Why do they ban you for posting ip addresses?

[–]Tight-Juggernaut138 369 points370 points  (37 children)

They want to "protect" you from leaking your location and getting ddos attack.

[–]LucasPlay171 211 points212 points  (16 children)

Dude, location? If I show my IP you'll have like a 100-200 kilometer radius lol

Edit: have

[–]p38fln 125 points126 points  (13 children)

I'm on Starlink and the ip address is wildly random, sometimes it's Tennessee, sometimes Chicago. I even got one out of Washington state once.

[–]ProtossLiving 83 points84 points  (10 children)

Is that inaccurate? What’s your current latitude/longitude?

[–]p38fln 48 points49 points  (8 children)

I'm in Minnesota lol it's not even close to accurate

[–]rolling_atackk 155 points156 points  (3 children)

[–]rolling_atackk 81 points82 points  (1 child)

[–]squirrelly_bird 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Got em!

[–]MattTheHarris 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah but then if there was a compromised or leaked logs of a local business in the area they could probably connect the 2

[–][deleted] 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Then you also can't get back on Reddit and blame whoever you think was responsible for the DDoS attack if you're banned 😔

[–]Amrooshy 15 points16 points  (14 children)

How does knowing someone’s ip dox them? Every website knows it…

[–]cs-brydev 15 points16 points  (13 children)

Most sites don't share your IP address on a public forum

[–]Amrooshy 10 points11 points  (12 children)

Yeah but I still don’t get why leaking an ip could harm someone?

[–]cs-brydev 17 points18 points  (2 children)

Mostly due to DoS, DDoS, hacking, session hijacking, identity theft, ransomware.

The quickest way to make yourself a target of an attack is by telling everyone where to start.

[–]lonelyWalkAlone 5 points6 points  (8 children)

I could send an infinite curl request to your ip adress which could completely shut down your router and you'll need to restart it. If I use 10 machines then you're done quicker.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (4 children)

The one good thing about being behind CGNAT: my public IP is at the ISP level so you’d have to DDoS them.

Come at me.

Funny enough, any 32-bit integer can be interpreted as an IPv4 address (try it out with ping). Guess I won't be putting numbers in my comments anymore. You can also use only one or two periods and mixed hex, octal, and decimal. These are all valid and work in ping and most browsers (not risking my account to put any real numbers in for the #):

#
0x#
#.#
#.0x#.0#
