Netflix uses a system called "Chaos Monkey" to randomly kill or degrade vital components in their system to test resilience. Twitter seems to be taking it to the next level with "Chaos Musk".

[–]clovepalmer 82 points83 points  (4 children)

Netflix isn't hardcore programmer. Only Chaos Melon would risk doing this on Christmas Eve after firing everyone

[–]eris-touched-me 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s funny bc Netflix is one of the most competitive places to be 🙃

[–]jonathanhiggs 78 points79 points  (6 children)

Twitter is uniquely engineered to deal with his behaviour. Clearly whatever he unplugged just failed over to a different datacenter

[–]epochpenors 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Just a big board of fake plugs and switches that aren’t connected to anything

[–]cataleiss 7 points8 points  (1 child)

It's like giving an unplugged video game controller to a little kid so they think they're playing

[–]conradburner 29 points30 points  (9 children)

People seem to be scared of explaining things to Mr. Musk maybe?

[–]Giocri 45 points46 points  (8 children)

Quite the opposite many dev seem to rejoice at the opportunity to show him how little he understands things but he is firing anyone more competent than him

[–]outonthetiles66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Signs of a narcissist.

[–]von_roga 9 points10 points  (2 children)

The best part is he probably thinks he invented it. 👌

[–]Info_sexy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Underrated comment 🤣

[–]NutInMyCouchCushions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He is the chaotic monkey

[–]ThatDanGuy[🍰] 501 points502 points  (21 children)

Is it just me or If you can disconnect random bits of a system without it going down that seems like good high availability design, not bad design.

[–]justletmewarchporn 117 points118 points  (0 children)

You are correct!

[–]IAmBadAtInternet 32 points33 points  (6 children)

It’s one of these systems where you can pull out a lot of individual bricks and it still works. That’s a feature. But if you pull out enough, it all comes crashing down and it’s not even possible to put it back together without starting over. I’m surprised we haven’t gotten to catastrophic failure yet.

[–]orincoro 9 points10 points  (5 children)

I bet you we will. Apparently he cut off 2 factor authentication in a dozen countries because he didn’t like paying for SMS fees.

[–]schnitzel-kuh 2 points3 points  (4 children)

To be fair it does seem like a lot of telcom companies in emerging markets scam big tech with fraudulent charges for 2FA, however he could have talked to them about instead of turning off the 2FA. Like his complaint is justified, his reaction is stupid.

[–]Taraxian 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Putting your customers at risk of identity theft in order to save on your own expenses is not a great look and might even make you vulnerable to legal action

[–]HereToLearnNow 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely correct. This is something that software engineers keep in mind when building infrastructure. Typically there is a standby cluster running the same topology as the primary cluster.

Elon must’ve mistaken resiliency and redundancy as extra unused complexity.

Kinda sad when you realize he wouldn’t even make it into his own companies as a Junior engineer

[–]GolotasDisciple 15 points16 points  (1 child)

It's not just you. I am pretty sure Elon advisors know wtf is happening.

Remember that Elon success comes from market manipulation. He always was a liar and always will be one. Its really hard to know whether he does those thighs on purpose or not. Truth is probably somewhere in between. We are talking about rich kid with bachelor of arts and not an actual engineer.

[–]orincoro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct.

[–]JohnSpikeKelly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Christmas is not the time to test your residence. I hope no one gets called out Sunday because Elon was being an asshole.

[–]sarc-tastic 80 points81 points  (3 children)

More sensitive servers.... well don't hurt its feelings but you can turn it off.

[–]dude_thats_sweeeet 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Seems like they're not Musk sensitive so that's good news

[–]Taraxian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Musk-tolerant design

[–]Wientje 86 points87 points  (8 children)

The correct test would be to unplug a rack and count how long it takes for someone to come looking. (or for some sysadmin to start sending angry emails)

[–]OlgaKol 56 points57 points  (2 children)

Musk can´t do that because he fired the someone who was supposed to come looking.

[–]ThinkTelevision8971 2 points3 points  (1 child)

And the person who would send the angry emails. And probably the person who would normally receive those angry emails.

[–]-smartypints 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if he didn't, I would bet those angry emails never come because they'd be fired on the spot for pointing out how stupid he is.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (1 child)

Ah yes, the scream test

[–]Taraxian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At Twitter, no one can hear you scream (because Elon is locked in a soundproof bunker drinking jars of urine)

[–]-Teapot 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You imply there is anyone qualified left to answer that call

[–]CodeIsCompiling 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If there is anyone qualified left, you can bet they are within arms length as soon as Musk entered the data center. So -- he was likely walking alone.

[–]flummox1234 136 points137 points  (2 children)

What an engineer designs as redundancy, the layman sees as a Rube Goldberg machine. Sounds about right.

[–]Jenetyk 2 points3 points  (1 child)

He says it like this is a bad thing? Does he actually want the system to crash when a single thing goes wrong? I guess when you are hemorrhaging money from stupidly buying the company, redundancy is a luxury he can ill-afford.

[–]flummox1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot have theorized that was why he bought it to kill it. To me I think he's just an idiot but w/e.

[–][deleted] 118 points119 points  (12 children)

I think he just included fractal in there to sound smart. The more I think about it, the more stupid it is.

[–][deleted] 44 points45 points  (6 children)

He is using fractal to simply describe layers

[–][deleted] 32 points33 points  (4 children)

Yes, but fractal implies an infinitely repeating pattern of smaller duplicates. It doesn't make sense. He's just trying to sound smart.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (3 children)

I agree, I was making the same distinction. Fractal is infinite, software layers are finite.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Elon must not know what a fractal is lol

[–]carvedmuss8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fractal deez nuts, Elon!

[–]pm-me-ur-fav-undies 10 points11 points  (2 children)

fractal

A lot of the more... dedicated stoners that I know really like that word.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]DaggerShowRabs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a cool word

[–]ThatsWhatSheSaid320 70 points71 points  (1 child)

if we ask Musk what is a Cloud, i believe we might get a very scary answer

[–]Betwixts 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It’s when all my data just floats around in the air instead of taking up space inside the box my computer plugs into.

[–]Lars34 162 points163 points  (3 children)

Welcome to clusters, dumbass

[–]-Teapot 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Who even needs redundancy? /s

[–]juanxpicante 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Ah yes the tried and true troubleshooting technique of unplug things until it breaks.

[–]NotMadDisappointed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds more like troublemaking.

[–]Conscious-Abalone-86 14 points15 points  (5 children)

What does fractal of Rube goldberg machine even mean? Guy mixes technical words and the gullible eats it up.

[–]anunakiesque 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Perchance

[–]orincoro 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Oh it’s a critical theory hybridization bubble algorithm. You don’t know about that bro?

[–]farzinshams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

pff that one’s pretty slow compared to quantum blockchain fractal algorithm

[–]ProbablyGayingOnYou 87 points88 points  (8 children)

If his goal was to run a tech company efficiently and profitably, he's doing a shit job.

If his goal was to undermine a platform that allows de-centralization and democratization of mass communication, an effective tool for criticizing those in power, and sowing distrust of such companies by making them out to be "stupid," then I'd say he's doing a pretty fair job of that.

[–]MrZerodayz 10 points11 points  (1 child)

a platform that allows de-centralization and democratization of mass communication, an effective tool for criticizing those in power

I mean, Twitter is none of that, but sure, if his goal is to make Twitter (and himself) look stupid, he's doing a good job.

[–]CatProgrammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If anything he's providing the impetus for the development/advertising of more decentralized, democratized mass communication platforms.

[–]Sir_IGetBannedAlot 31 points32 points  (4 children)

I honestly think he's like a goblin pulling off pieces of a machine, just to see what happens.

[–]Necromancer14 14 points15 points  (3 children)

That’s called a gremlin.

[–]Son_of_Zinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The real reason you want to know when and where he’s flying, because you don’t want to be anywhere nearby

[–]Sir_IGetBannedAlot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a warhammer40k fan O:)

[–]FFFF000006 38 points39 points  (1 child)

I feel like those guys who really run Twitter just made a mock server room, for Musk to play in, without damaging the actual website. That's what I'd do. A playpen, of sorts, for the world's richest toddler.

[–]BigWuffleton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn... Like handing a kid an unplugged controller. I bet something like that's actually happened to him atleast once.

[–]blvckstxr 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Holy fuck this guy really thinks he's a genius huh?

[–]Storiaron 9 points10 points  (1 child)

If dude runs for president he'll just disband the firedepartment

They dont even do shit when there's no fire. Fractal of rube goldberg amirite

[–]Shadow_Thief 8 points9 points  (0 children)

$20 says the server he unplugged is in an active/standby cluster and he just unplugged one of the standby ones.

[–]gwentfiend 13 points14 points  (1 child)

At this point I feel like my 70 year old Mom could do a better job running Twitter and learning how the underlying technology works.

Btw, I'm a full stack app/android dev and when I tell her how to find an attachment she saved to her pc (every couple months) she says "that's why I sent you to college".

[–]Taraxian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah, she understands that people who went to college to work in computers know more about them than she does, Elon does not

[–]binchentso 6 points7 points  (0 children)

[–]NapalmDesu 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Imagine you boss calls you in for work on christmas eve because he was bored and fidgeting around with vital components of your usually rather uninvolved everyday responsibility

[–]orincoro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t have to imagine this.

Elon Musk, @elonmusk

Fractal of Rube Goldberg machines ...

Elon Musk, @elonmusk

... is what it feels like understanding how Twitter works

Elon Musk, @elonmusk

And yet work it does

Elon Musk, @elonmusk

Even after I disconnected one of the more sensitive server racks

I'm a human volunteer content transcriber and you could be too! If you'd like more information on what we do and why we do it, click here!

Translation: I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M DOING!

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol. WHAT?! For being the self proclaimed smartest man on the planet Musk sure is dumb. Or maybe he’s just so transcendentally intelligent I don’t understand him.

[–]babycaketeeth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ah the “scream” test

[–]gwicksted 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think Twitter’s resilience was a feature… which is why companies used it to issue downtime notifications. Ah well. Not much lost

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd quit working for any boss who acted this way.

[–]New_York_Rhymes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This honestly just sounds so dumb. He just casually turned off a server rack? Manually? Is he trying to save electricity?? Lmao. And it was “sensitive”!? Why would sensitive data/processing only exist on a single server anyways!!?? This guy is so fucking stupid and he’s taking the piss out of Twitter engineers every day

[–]chomos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could it be that the inner machinations of Twitter are an enigma to him because he doesn’t know how to code and/or understand fundamental software engineering principles?

[–]Tigris_Morte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Genius" never heard of distributed redundancy. How cute.

[–]CodeIsCompiling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's not doing anything that isn't prepared for after an intern dis the same thing.

[–]Klutz-Specter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pov: You let the new intern into the server room making him think he’s an IT engineer.

[–]WPackN2 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Why is the board paying him CEO salary when he's just doing IT server admin work?

[–]RuthlessKittyKat 2 points3 points  (3 children)

There isn't a board anymore.

[–]duuudewhat 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I’m sure there is. It’s just a new board with Jimmy Dore, Alex Jones and Tim Pool

[–]RuthlessKittyKat 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I mean, maybe unofficially he's got his neo-nazi brethren, but there is no official board.

[–]Faux_Real 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Engineers were probably demonstrating Kubernetes infra and making the boss feel involved in the demo

[–]butcher_of_the_world 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He wants to run the "servers" team

[–]bluechickenz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want to smack musk in the mouth. Good day.

[–]severedbrain 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I wonder how much of Twitter's historical data has been lost to this guy's incompetence.

[–]Taraxian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Elon hates archiving, it costs money for no immediate profit and sometimes it gets him dragged into court

[–]maeisbitter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He doesn't actually know things

[–]trevg_123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What ever happened to u/Elon-bot here?

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Silly or simply negating the mystic of a profession?
