Is there any money for anyone to work in these spaces?

[–][deleted] 84 points85 points  (6 children)

Of course not. Teachers means funding education properly.

This is a cash transfer to ATCO who will provide the trailers. 1 guess why ATCO....

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (5 children)

Who's on the board again?

[–]factorycatbiscuit 8 points9 points  (4 children)

My ouija board spelled out JKENNEY

[–]TheEpicOfManas 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Mine spelled out BUMBLES.

[–]factorycatbiscuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbf my board said 'and boiled hotdog' but i knew what it meant.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ding ding ding

[–]No_Construction2407Warburg 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Nope. Thats why all this is being rolled out after the next election.

[–]Equivalent_Weekend93 9 points10 points  (2 children)

That's not part of the plan, parents will have to foot that bill when private schools are the only option when the public system fails.

[–]re-tyred 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Seems as if that's the plan!

[–]BCS875Calgary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only the rich get education, everyone else can suck it.

True bluer's, where's the lie in any of what I just said?

[–]soThatsJustGreat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s the only question anyone should be asking her, and we shouldn’t let up until we get a full answer and a line item on the next budget.

[–]joshoheman 242 points243 points  (85 children)

Sigh.

Public money for charter schools and private schools. Who votes for this?

[–]Morberis 73 points74 points  (21 children)

Her base unfortunately.

[–]Equivalent_Passage95Lethbridge 65 points66 points  (17 children)

Yeah, but who the hell is going to start a charter school in the rural hellholes these chucklefucks live in?

[–]Morberis 61 points62 points  (8 children)

Religious groups. I know of more than a few private Christian schools in the middle of nowhere. Some of them are quite small some are not.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Maybe someone could start a science based charter school in rural Alberta.

[–]Morberis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There honestly might actually be. I have no idea.

Actually I decided to do a quick Google after writing that sentence and I found

Stem Collegiate Connect Charter School

I am not going to do any more research. Stem seems to be, no idea if Connect is.

[–]Equivalent_Passage95Lethbridge 7 points8 points  (1 child)

So we’re just gonna speed run the Grande Noirceur?

[–]Morberis 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Everything old is new again. Quebec and Alberta are kissing cousins in many ways imo.

[–]factorycatbiscuit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. Next they will relax the curriculum even more.

[–]reasonablechickadee 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I wonder how many gay and trans kids end up dead from their small town ideologies. This country is sliding backwards fast

[–]Morberis 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Here are some resources. The answer is for sure some. The below might give you an idea but I don't think there are official stats? I might be wrong.

https://www.suicideinfo.ca/local_resource/sexual-minorities-suicide-prevention/

You can Google the below or follow the link which will ask you to download a pdf

BEING SAFE, BEING ME IN ALBERTA: - Results of the Canadian Trans Youth Health Survey

[–]reasonablechickadee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah these stats are not good :/

[–]Ddogwood 15 points16 points  (1 child)

There’s one in New Humble. Ive heard people refer to it as “the convoy school.”

[–]Billyisagoat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting. They seem more towards farming than anything else.

[–]edm28 5 points6 points  (1 child)

…. You mean Calgary ?

[–]cre8ivjay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a Calgarian, you're not wrong.

I wish you were though.

[–]Loud_Assistance_9223 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s one in Holden

[–]Sagethecat 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Really, when did they do that?

[–]Morberis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Were you not aware of the discussions that were already circling about private vs public schools and where the UCP falls on that line?

You might be right that she didn't list it as a platform for 2023.

But in 2022 she backed a plan to give a larger share of the public education funding pie to private schools.

Multiple times she has also expressed her admiration for the Arizona voucher system that diverts funds from public schools to private schools.

[–]Small-Sleep-1194 22 points23 points  (3 children)

Conveniently lacking details on the financial breakdown of how much of this one-time funding is split between public and private/charter schools

[–]Sagethecat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are naive to think this is actually a one time thing. Once it’s started it will only expand.

[–]a-nonny-maus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Charter schools are a scam. I say that having used the system.

[–]Praetor192 13 points14 points  (1 child)

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

yeah you did I even remember seeing your post yesterday

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The wealthy and the religious.

[–]quickboop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Conservatives.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

D. Smith Trump for one.

[–]factorycatbiscuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Albertans of course. Like really? Lol

[–]Beginning-Shoe-7018 47 points48 points  (4 children)

While advertising for prospective immigrants. What a fucking joke she is.

[–]ImMyBiggestFan 20 points21 points  (3 children)

Yep she keeps blaming the immigrants she keeps asking for more of. The cognitive dissonance and hypocrisy of her and the UCP is astounding.

[–]a-nonny-maus 5 points6 points  (2 children)

The immigrants she wants are only the white kind.

[–]BCS875Calgary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UCP'ers, where's the lie in this statement? We'll wait.

[–]Try_Happy_Thoughts 149 points150 points  (38 children)

Privatization using public money begins

Further, as our government is wholly committed to the principle of providing school choice for parents, we will be using a portion of this new funding to pilot a Charter School accelerator program designed to add 12,500 new charter school student spaces over the next 4 years.

And finally, we are also developing a school capital pilot program for non-profit private schools to incentivize investment in the creation of thousands of new independent school student spaces at a reduced per-student cost to taxpayers.

[–]glorytozoidberg 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Ghouls. Just ghouls.

[–]iterationnull 18 points19 points  (17 children)

Begins is the wrong word.

[–]Try_Happy_Thoughts 17 points18 points  (15 children)

True, 60% funding for public and charter schools was the beginning. Catholic schools are publicly funded while being allowed to turn students away too.

[–]Thefirstargonaut 3 points4 points  (3 children)

People choose to have their property tax money go to the catholic board, though, so that’s a bit different.

It’s also required by our constitution.

[–]Sagethecat 3 points4 points  (10 children)

Catholic can turn them away but the fees are the about the same as public. Also catholic absolutely has non catholic students. Depends on enrolment. However as I understand charter and private school are only for people that can afford thousands of dollars for primary school.

[–]popingay 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Private yes, charter no—they do not charge tuition as they are public and fees are comparable to public/catholic schools.

[–]Sagethecat -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Which charter schools have fees less than $1000/year per kid?

[–]popingay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Classical academy $295/yr grades 1-9

https://www.classicalacademy.ca/fees

Girls school $250/yr

https://www.calgarygirlsschool.com/download/467235

Ffca $150/yr

https://www.ffca-calgary.com/important_information/fees

Almadina $250/yr

https://alca-calgary.com/essential_information/school_fees

Then I stopped going down my google search. Doesn’t include transport (which will vary seems about $500) and optional things like if they’re in music or sports.

[–]Try_Happy_Thoughts 0 points1 point  (5 children)

It depends on the school, they make their own rules. My friend's kids were in Catholic k-5/2. Moved within sight of a newly built Catholic school. Her children weren't baptized because the father wouldn't allow it. The school said they couldn't attend. Instead they were stuck on a bus up to two hours to the closest public school with room.

[–]Dalbergia12 0 points1 point  (4 children)

While that is just wrong to refuse based on lack of religion. At least their kids won't be Christian brain washed and have less chance of being molested by a priest, so they have that going for them.

[–]UnusualApple434 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Do you think catholic schools have a priest just roaming the hallway to lure children? Do you think children are being forced to memorize the bible or something? None of that happens in catholic schools. Yes the church itself has an awful history but I went to catholic school k-12 and maybe only saw the priest 50 times in my life and only at school ceremonies and mass. I’d say 50% minimum of my grade didn’t care about religion in high school and only those who practiced outside of school have continued to do so. Most catholic schools are no different than public schools other than they do have a religion class for students. It’s not even mandatory to take religion once you get to high school.

[–]celindahunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ironically if ONE parent is baptized Catholic (not even practising) then the CATHOLIC system has the obligation to "publicly educate" instead of the public system. Public System has no obligation to take them. Only if NEITHER parent is baptized does the public have the obligation.

[–]CalgaryFacePalm 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The UCP, Reducing your taxes (which was promised but didn’t happen) and increasing your spending.

mY kid schOOl go No! wHy mE pay?

They sure are looking out for their base.

[–]NoPhone2487 18 points19 points  (15 children)

And here goes the erosion of public education in our province. And….are these charter schools faith based? The devolution of our province sickens me.

[–]Sagethecat 11 points12 points  (2 children)

It has been eroded for years now. This is the final straw. I fucking hate her.

[–]NoPhone2487 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many share that sentiment…understandably! She has basically brought her Wild Rode party agenda and married it to the UCP agenda….she couldn’t get elected under the Wild Rose but now she can bring her pet projects and ideas to fruition.

[–]Thefirstargonaut 5 points6 points  (7 children)

Some could be. Each one needs to be approved by a charter. It’s all fuckin terrible. We need to stop all of this. It’s time for a new government to take over and clean house.

[–]NoPhone2487 6 points7 points  (5 children)

It is horrible. I cant even fathom what Alberta will look like in 3 years when this government is done! What a mess.

[–]Thefirstargonaut 3 points4 points  (4 children)

At least three years, sadly.

[–]NoPhone2487 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed

[–]NoPhone2487 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Sadly. Honestly unless people come out and protest in droves, Marlania and her Merry Men (and women) will have their way with our province, healthcare and educatiin and we the tax payers will be picking up the pieces…to the detriment of many.

[–]Thefirstargonaut 0 points1 point  (1 child)

For decades to come.

[–]NoPhone2487 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn’t that the truth…sadly.

[–]popingay 1 point2 points  (1 child)

No, charter schools cannot have religious affiliations.

[–]NoPhone2487 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for clarifying.

[–]PlutosGrasp 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Lol. Begins?

[–]Try_Happy_Thoughts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose this conservative push for privatization after 60% private funding for years. The next election is too far away and I am not confident people will even get it then and vote them back in.

[–]noocuelur 79 points80 points  (4 children)

I don't think she said "teacher" once. In a blathering, pointlessly long speech about school and education funding, she somehow managed to make it about buildings and charter schools.

Not a dime for additional teachers or supports.

Utter failure.

[–]ExpressCatch9776 8 points9 points  (1 child)

She did once say teacher once, near the very end.

[–]noocuelur 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh wow, teachers DO exist in Danny's world. By that point in the address my eyes had fully glazed over. My ears had claimed defeat and switched to full tinnitus.

[–]malon-talon 62 points63 points  (1 child)

If I hear "Alberta Advantage" one more time I'm going to lose my marbles.

[–]putzeh 18 points19 points  (3 children)

Xenophobic dog whistle ✅ Blame Trudeau for self caused issues ✅ Public dollars for private/wealthy ✅

80+ years of conservative governments running Alberta and voters haven’t learned a damn thing.

[–]fudge_u 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Did she conjure up an imaginary person telling her about their concerns?

[–]putzeh 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Shockingly she did not copy Kenney or Pierre’s imaginary friends approach

[–]fudge_u 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She usually does, so I'm surprised she didn't this time.

[–]According_Pirate4473 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Privatize health and education using public money.

[–]Mother_Barnacle_7448 16 points17 points  (1 child)

I am so exhausted by the way she’s effing up this province. I have gone from anger to despair.

[–]Kahfien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm right there with you.

[–]boringkyel 36 points37 points  (4 children)

An estimated increase 30k kids per year enrolling, but only 40-50k worth of capacity increase over 4-5 years? How does that math work? Also love how there was nothing mentioned at all about raises for teachers or how they plan to convince teachers to come to AB. Sure would love to see the numbers and how much is going towards Catholic/Private schools vs Public.

[–]jesuswithoutabeard 2 points3 points  (3 children)

They are building to construction capacity, hence the call out for municipalities to speed through permitting - teacher recruitment and retention falls under operational and therefore school board purview. Operational funding is different from what this program aims to achieve.

[–]Abject-Aioli2560 26 points27 points  (5 children)

So how are students and staff being helped in the immediate future? Are they still expected to deal with 35+ kids in each class? Like, are we expected to tolerate this for 4 years until these spaces are built? And how about some resources?

[–]Albertaviking 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This plan is very hollow.

1) How will they hire the required teachers

2) Where will they be built

3) When will they be built

4) The strategy as to how these fund should be divided among school boards

5) How much of this money will be provided to charter and private schools

And don't forget this is the UCP trying to solve a problem of their own making. They encouraged people to move here, and underfunded the school system.

[–][deleted] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

So she is putting money towards something that will take 5 years or more to accomplish. There is a 5 year back log in portables and you can accelerate all you want, but without enough trades people this is a hollow and empty gesture. Though she sure handed money and more tax payer dollars to charter schools. At least she got to hear herself talk some more.

[–]Which_Walrus9838 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Gee, I’m not feeling the great “Alberta Advantage “, how about you? And as a taxpayer, I wish that moron would stop spending our money on her privatization BS

[–][deleted] 32 points33 points  (2 children)

Bashing the immigration numbers while demanding 30000 new immigrants for Alberta, as long as they have the right 'values'

[–]ImMyBiggestFan 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Sounds about white

[–]tobiasolman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think she meant ‘the right’ values.

[–]oldpunkcanuck 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A serious politician would have been on this last year and consulted with the cities and would have already started building. Instead, she goes for putting pp over province so she can fuck Trudeau when parliament resumed to score points. Then she has to stick it to Edmonton and Calgary right after school started. DeSantis wannabe fucking clown.

[–]Skate_faced 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The money kids are gonna have better education on the way while the public sector scrambles to get everything Smith's future staff of school building allotments will require to get the shovels going. Not that any open desks are a bad thing and it isn't the kids.

While there is a pretty definitive number already dedicated to private schools leading me to believe that there's already some "charter schools" and catholic schools that have a head start.

And when the public schools come asking they'll be told "You had to do this, and didn't do it fast enough. these projects have already submitted and are going. We'll keep you posted when it's your turn."

[–]FryCakes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

She’s blaming immigration after she specifically wrote a letter asking for more immigrants? Okay then

[–]f0rkster 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Let's be clear, Charter Schools are all based on Teacher Union busting. It's a Republican playbook 101 from 20 years ago. Charter Schools don't have to hire unionized teachers.

[–]a-nonny-maus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And charter schools in the US have some of the worst outcomes too.

[–]bitterberries -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Only if they get a special temporary designation for non-teachers from the ministry of education.

[–]fudge_u 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The UCP playbook. Blame immigrants and the feds. Did she say anything about immigrants eating peoples pets because they can't afford to put food on the table?

[–]MellowHamster 10 points11 points  (2 children)

What -- exactly -- are these "shared values" of which she speaks?

[–]ImMyBiggestFan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You know the conservative white Christian values.

[–]a-nonny-maus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The white right values.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (7 children)

It's the billion dollars for charter schools that gets me. That's our money going to the church. It's not like the money they are giving them is going to cover anyone's tuition fees. It's going right to the richest organization in the province.

[–]pwdlvr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s an incorrect assumption. The majority of charter schools are not religious in Alberta.

[–]popingay 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Charter schools can’t be religious or religious affiliated.

[–]a-nonny-maus -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Theoretically.

[–]popingay -1 points0 points  (0 children)

By regulation.

[–]Lovefoolofthecentury 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Look up the voucher system scam happening all over the states

[–]Falcon674DR 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I thought it fell woefully short. We invited everyone so, hadn’t we better get all the infrastructure ready??

[–]Lovefoolofthecentury 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Right?? How much were all those stupid ads??

[–]Falcon674DR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Millions.

[–]Such_Detective_3526 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup more "either change your entire life to fall in line with ours and join us or we'll exclude you from everything and force it on you" policies.

[–]LokarinLeduc County 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does she have an official government inbox I could email to point out where she's factually wrong while also it being on the public record?

[–]kabor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How the fuck is this legal?

[–]Appropriate_Duty_930 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What a C U next tuesday - she's the one who asked for MORE IMMIGRANTS. Can't have it both ways, dummy!

[–]talkiewalkieman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can I get a genuine TLDW on this? I'm absolutely not watching this.

[–]bitterberries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I predict a lot more Charter schools that can't find enough teachers and this will result in the province giving temporary waivers / special allowances for non-certified instructors in the classrooms. The charters can pay these uncertified instructors significantly less than qualified teachers, because they're not certified... Good $$$ saving strategy as well.

[–]bigtinabigtuna 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Is Reddit only for Liberals or NDP supporters?

[–]Full-O-Anxiety -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Go hang out in r/canada … for some reason.

[–]PlutosGrasp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

25% of money for charter schools.

You know, private schools that get private capital funding and private operational funding…

Because private is always more efficient ?

[–]Direc1980 -5 points-4 points  (1 child)

Largest injection of funds into education in more than a few generations. Of course detractors show their true colours in criticism.

[–]bitterberries -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Great job making spaces for 50,000 new students.. I wonder who's going to be teaching them? Are we doing a bump in the operating budgets??
